Bought a mystery box for fun. Accidentally opened a door to oblivion. 📼🚪

This book fully got under my skin. What starts as a creepy, curiosity-fueled choice (because of course you buy a dark web mystery box) turns into a reality-bending nightmare that quietly spirals out of control.
The atmosphere is thick, unsettling, and disorienting in the best way. Time doesn’t behave, reality feels slippery, and the horror creeps in slowly.....more what did I just read? than jump scares. I loved how the story plays with memory, identity, and the idea of being erased while something darker remembers you all too well.

This is the first book I’ve read by this author, even though he has been haunting my TBR for ages....and I was lucky to receive this book as a gifted earc. If this is the kind of eerie, thought-provoking horror he delivers, I’ll absolutely be back for more.
Creepy, clever, and lingering long after the last page.

All opinions are my own

This was my first novel by JD Setzer and 100000% won’t be my last!

This book was a crazy wild ride. It’s like stranger things on crack.

I loved every minute of it. I was rooting for the characters the whole way through, and even Steven at the end.

If you love thrillers that edge on horror and make you question reality, this is the book for you.

Review time! Unseen Echoes by J.D. Setzer!

High velocity from the beginning! From the dark web a chilling video that puts four friends into high Adrenaline! A little fear in each friend, maybe!

Sometimes you enter a door 🚪 that perhaps should’ve been kept closed!

Descriptions in these chapters ❤️ Phenomenal! I got down and dirty with the suspense, mystery and paranormal because reader, beware! It’s going to JUMP out at you! QUICK!

Spiraling 🌀 into full chaos, delve into the Sinister woods, fleeting shadows that hiss, darkness and decay as photos, mirrors, steal your mind!

Each friend held hostage by their own paranoia, traumatic pasts, scream in pure terror as reality shifts!

The house forgotten in rot as only demons slip through the crevices!

Not even paranormal equipment helps within this hell.

Meet THE KEEPER! 😳😳 The heart races, veins pulsing in total terror!

A beast unleashed! No mercy! What of your memories reader?? 👀👀

Unseen Echoes Vibrates with ENERGY, UNFOLDS into NIGHTMARES! There is nowhere to RUN nor to HIDE.

Just when you think you have escaped, hurtling back through the door to your normal life, THINK AGAIN.

The Keeper laughs holding one hostage! There is only THREE.

🚪 slams shut. WTF moments on every page! Will the door remain shut? Will The Keeper let you in for your friend?

Wisps of shadows lingering in doom, as that 🚪 beckons, inviting? What’s the plan? The sacrifice?

How far would you go for your best friend?

A book like this I’ve never read before. But that DOOR unhinged me.

Raw macabre situations! Five ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ PLUS for intensity, action, horror, best descriptive scenes interlaid with emotion, facing your own fears and the one question??? What if it were you?

Blindsided me at the end! 🔥🔥🔥🔥

JD SETZER raises the bar on this. Excellent in creativity and taking a reader down through there!

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 "A Terrifying, Unsettling Masterpiece that Preys on the Unknown"
First, I want to start by offering my most sincere thanks to the author, J.D. Setzer, for sending me this Advance Reader Copy (ARC).
I’ve always said that the unknown should be left alone and quiet. Sailing into those murky waters of the unknown is a HARD NO—it’s just common sense! In many horror movies, people make poor decisions, so that's why this book proves why my mother always taught me: Don’t go into the woods. Stay away from the woods.
This story left me with a feeling of deep disquiet; I mean, literally speaking. Each chapter was a descent deeper into the heart of my worst nightmares.
The quality of the storytelling, the plot, and the ending is something I genuinely appreciate and must commend the author for. He has done a fantastic job provoking a genuine fear in me—an immersive reader who loves to set the perfect atmosphere for every story.
This gave me a strong vibe of those horror stories that simply leave you feeling unwell, giving you shivers, and implanting that deep, unsettling feeling that something or someone is watching you.
With that, I give this incredible, terrifying, and unsettling story 5 stars. Congratulations to J.D. Setzer for creating stories that truly connect with readers like me. If you are looking for a horror story that will leave you speechless, look no further: Unseen Echoes is for you!

Read this if you like:

- Stranger Things & The Upside Down
- Creepy Pasta
- Spooky Scary Storytime
- Creepy doors in the woods
- Courage in the face of fear

Unseen Echoes is soooo good! This book is truly the stuff of nightmares, in the best possible way! This story is a whole vibe and I recommend it 10/10!

Funny story, I actually had to take a break for a couple of weeks halfway through reading it because I was in the hospital for bronchitis. I was hooked up to a heart monitor and they were tracking my oxygen, so I had to stop reading Unseen Echoes because it literally got my heart rate up and I kept holding my breath. I only stopped reading it for the poor nurses' sakes. 😂

This story follows 4 friends as they navigate a mystery and find themselves faced with a nightmarish reality beyond their worst fears. J.D. Setzer does an amazing job of showing how fear and psychological torture can affect people in the deepest part of their soul, while also showing how kindness and friendship can be the light on the dark that makes life worth living. I love how the 4 friends are found family that inspire hope and resilience in the face of hardship.

I love J.D. Setzer's writing and the amazing way he weaves a story with such detailed beauty and deep knowledge of people and how their minds work. I also love that The Artist and The Final Stream by Nadija Mujagic make cameos in the book.

My favorite quotes from UnSeen Echoes:

"But curiosity has teeth--and it bit us hard."

"Echoes are not just sounds. They are memories trying to find their way back."

"We look like the people ghosts tell stories about."

If you liked stranger things especially the first season, then this book is for you.
Have you ever been inclined to the dark web? Would you go to the very location seen in a video retrieved from the dark web? Four friends find a mysterious VHS tape that takes them to an unknown, eerie location where they stumble upon a door. A door in the middle of the woods surrounded by nothing leading to…who knows. An echo that feeds on memories, the memories of your existence. It feeds on their weaknesses. Will they succumb to this dreadful “upside down” world that is made of some of their darkest fears?

Some parts of this were so creepy and eerie that I actually found myself a little scared reading it in the dark before bed! A brilliant masterpiece of work. He adds a little Easter egg of another book of his and a new release from another indie author in this story which made me smile because I love when authors do this. There’s comedic relief throughout and it is done so well. I began this book in 2025 as an ARC reader and finished as my first book of 2026. Let’s just say I’ve set myself up for a year of great reading!
January 4, 2026
A college student obsessed with buying strange dark-web items discovers an old VHS tape recorded near his hometown. In it, two people find a mysterious door that appears in the woods; when one person steps through, they instantly vanish. Fascinated, the student brings three friends to the location from the tape—and to their shock, the door is still there.
At first nothing happens when they open and close it, so they decide to leave. But as they walk away, the door opens on its own. Drawn in, the group steps through and emerges into a strange, much larger, and unfamiliar world. There they discover an abandoned house and, ignoring their instincts, decide to explore it. Splitting up, each friend experiences terrifying, reality-warping events in different rooms before ultimately blacking out. After waking and briefly sharing what happened, they flee the house—only to find the landscape outside has changed again.
Eventually they locate the door and return to their own reality. But when one friend realizes he dropped his camera, he goes back for it. As soon as he reenters the strange world, the door slams shut and locks behind him, trapping him on the other side.

Echoes aren’t just sounds—they’re memories clawing their way back.
When Noah orders a “mystery box” off the dark web, he’s expecting a cheap thrill. What he gets instead is a VHS tape labeled ECHOES… and chilling footage of a man disappearing through a solitary door deep in the woods.

Haunted. Obsessed. Reckless.
Noah drags his friends on a hunt for the door—and when they step through it, reality starts to crumble.

⏳ Time twists.
👤 Faces blur.
🕳️ And something ancient whispers from the void… something that knows their names.

As echoes of the past begin rewriting the present, one question rises above the static:

What happens when the world forgets you—
but the dark remembers?

If you love reality-bending horror, found footage vibes, and stories that linger long after the last page… add this one to your list ASAP.

ARC Review of ‘Unseen Echoes’ by JD Setzer.

Wow. This book was whirlwind cool!
Storyline was really intriguing, well described, story building was well paced.
We follow a few friends who love to explore the paranormal weird stuff. Noah loves collecting artifacts that make your head scratch.
A video leads them to a weird door, a door that holds a scary world behind it.
The world building and describing how they have to navigate through that dark world was uncanny on a good way!
I sometimes felt frustrated with how their minds worked, but they are just teens, so sometimes rationales were a little 😒

Overal enjoyed this book.

This book was terrifying, and I loved every minute of it!

What could be worse than dying? How about still being alive, but forgotten?

When a mysterious VHS shows up on Noah's doorstep, he has no other options but to watch it. But what he sees isn't just chilling, but real. The VHS shows a door standing in the woods... the woods near his town. He knows exactly where this door is, and he and his friends go on an adventure to find it. But what starts as an adventure turns into a living nightmare as they step through the door into another realm.

This is a story of survival against the supernatural, and trying to escape before the outside world forgets you even existed.

This book kept me on the edge of my seat, and I can only hope this gets a movie adaptation one day, because I'll be the first in line to go see it.

Adrenaline filled, those butterflies from the rollercoaster drop, dark, reality shifts, do you know what's real? Unseen Echos is a book with so much detail you almost taste the description.
J.D has an amazing talent when writing his books. He pulls you in so deep you love the story alongside the characters. Details so deep you feel their emotions, taste the description, hear the screams. He writes with his soul and every single page shows it.
Unseen Echos gives you the horror, the paranormal vs reality, nightmares beyond recognition. It is not a book you'll want to miss out on.

I finished Unseen Echoes a couple of nights ago but had to take a couple of days to process my thoughts. And definitely NOT in a bad way. J.D. really jumped in head first with the nightmare fuel in this one! I had a ball of dread in the pit of my stomach reading this. If I am ever in the woods and see a random door and it opens, there is no way in heck I would go through that thing. But that is exactly what Noah and his friends do. If you like creepy and paranormal things you will definitely want to check this one out.

Wow, what a nostalgic, heart pumping wild ride. This story pulled me in from the very beginning. After watching a VHS tape, purchased from the dark web, four friends embark on an adventure to find a mysterious door in the middle of the woods. This innocent outing becomes something of nightmares.

The imagery that Setzer depicts is top notch. I felt like I was watching a movie in my head. I could see, smell and hear everything beyond the door.

Unseen Echoes shows a true test of friendship and the importance of holding our memories close. It reminds us that even in the scariest moments, there are people who can pull us out of the darkness.

“Unseen Echoes” is a mind-bending thrill ride! J.D. Setzer takes a simple “mystery box” hook and spins it into a terrifying, reality-warping descent where every page hums with tension. The shifting timelines, the eerie VHS tape, the door in the woods—it’s all deliciously unsettling. Setzer delivers atmosphere, dread, and twists that keep hitting long after you think you’ve figured things out.

Creepy, clever, and utterly addictive—this one echoes in your mind long after the final page!

A chilling descent into forgotten identities, cursed recordings, and the kind of darkness that never stops watching. From paranormal VHS tapes pulled from the dark web to haunted houses with shape-shifting horrors. every page feels like a warning whispered too late.

"The true terror is not death, but erasure, the thought that one day, you might be the friend no one remembers, the child whose name is forgotten, the lover who was never loved."

Noah gets a VHS tape from the dark web labeled "ECHOES". He watches it with his three best friends. The tape shows a mysterious door in the woods. They set out on an adventure to find the door but what they encounter through that door fractures time and reality. Blurred faces and whispers "echoes" of the past alter the present. They begin to question what is real. With supernatural elements and creatures that defy reality, life will never be the same.

If you're a fan of Stranger Things you need to read this. I couldn't stop reading, telling myself "just one more chapter" finishing it in a little over 24 hours and then I had to sit with myself and process it.

This book is truly like no other. The authors attention to detail and descriptive phrases like "curiosity has teeth and it bit us hard" and "shattered windows gape like empty eye sockets" brought me along on the adventure of a lifetime.

What in the upside down, inside out, twilight zone and stranger things was THAT!! If you loved the insanity of stranger things and demigorgons and Vecna then you will love Unseen Echoes. The dark web is not a place anyone should be purchasing items let alone a too curious teenager. Curiosity killed the cat, right? Follow Noah and his friends as he makes one bad decision after another. Watch out for the keeper and the echoes along the way. The group finds out they aren't the only ones who discovered the door when they meet Steven. Are they erased from memories for good or are they all saved? Read this story for the wild ride to find out! I also love the fellow author love thrown into this!! This may have been my first J.D.Setzer novel but not the last!!! Thanks for the ride!!

Unseen Echoes is a non stop, heart pounding, releasing a breath you didn't realize you was holding read! Noah buys paranormal, creepy thing off the dark web. He ordered a creepy, haunted doll and there was a vhs tape included. He was surprised to see the video showed a place nearby. He watched a young man and women get out of the car and walk into the woods. They find a door, free standing in the woods. The man inspects it, goes through the door and vanishes before the women's eyes. The video ends. Noah enlists his friends Ezra, Liam and Tillie to investigate this door. They find the door, walk through and become trapped in a nightmare, running for their lives, unsure if there's a way out. Terror around every corner of this strange place.

Unseen Echoes by J.D. Setzer
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
This is a thrilling and intense supernatural story! It reminds me of the creepiness and strangeness of Stranger Things, which I love!

What starts out as a harmless purchase of a random VHS tape, turns into so much more!

Ezra and Noah watch this video, which contains a mysterious door standing in the middle of the woods. They are excited and curious and want to go investigate this for themselves.
They get ahold of 2 more friends, Tillie and Liam and the adventures begin.
The group of friends find the door from the video and decide to step through. They realize they have entered a parallel type of place. But, everything is slightly different and becoming more and more creepy as they continue on.
This other place is showing the friends things they don’t want to see. Each person must face a fear and figure out what is real.

This story is fantastic! It completely sucked me in from the beginning and didn’t let up with the intensity! It’s very well written and there’s excellent imagery and details! I felt like I was watching a movie play out.

I was lucky to get an arc of this super engaging, and suspenseful book! There’s tense moments, and I was at the edge of my seat from start to finish!

*This book comes out January 7th and I highly recommend the read!!*
