Tempted by the Soldier

Forgetting the past, facing the future

Stephanie Phillips is sick of charm. And Clint Morgan, the newest resident of Covenant Falls, has it in spades. Stephanie knows she should run the other way because the former Blackhawk pilot is too good-looking, too charismatic…and much too sexy.

As the town veterinarian, Stephanie has truly found her home here. Clint, on the other hand, is staying for only a short time while he recovers from an injury. But when he starts to fit seamlessly into the close-knit community, the irresistible risk-taker makes his way into her heart.

I really like Patricia Potter books, the romance ones not the nursing ones. I adore her Westerns and I'm excited to see them coming out as ebooks. I enjoy her early Harlequin Historicals and I also quite like her RS. She also has a couple of Harleqin Super Romance. So chances were real good I would like Tempted by the Soldier. And no surprise. I did like it. A lot.

This is the second book to take place in the small town of Covenant Falls. Clint Morgan, our hero, is a former chopper pilot who served in Afghanistan but was in a car accident just before he was to head back. He suffered slight traumatic brain injury and suffers from blackouts. He heads to Covenant Falls to heal at the former home of the hero of the previous book in this series.

Stephanie Phillips our heroine, is the local vet -as in veterinarian. She is very wary of men due to an ugly time in her past. Though Clint is charming and quite attracted to her, she resists his appeal. On his part, Clint isn't planning on staying in Covenant Falls though he doesn't know what he's going to do with his life.

This isn't a big, splashy story. Instead it's more of a quiet, gentle story about two good but hurting people. Clint appears to be an outgoing, full of life kind of guy with a great a great sense of humor who is liked by everyone, but on the inside he's very lonely. He has no relationship with his family and he's lost his military family who had become his 'real'family when he could no longer serve. There is a very poignant side story between the love that develops between Clint and an abused dog. I just loved it.

Stephanie is a bit on the prickly side. She doesn't really let many people in, with good reason we see as the story goes along. She also has a sad and lonely past and these two people really are perfect for each other. We, the readers, as well as some of the residents see it. It's just up to Clint and Stephanie to see and agree.

I hope Ms. Potter plans others books in this small town. In the meantime, I'm collecting some of her backlist now as ebooks.

The female protagonist, Stephanie Phillips, could have been written from my best friend's life story. The details are so close to her desperately-real, very scary life. That's what drew me in. What kept me in was the development of Clint Morgan, a quietly eloquent man suffering from headaches and blackouts that have resulted not from his wartime experience in the middle east but from an unfortunate accident he faults himself for.

Stephanie is a veterinarian whose love for animals is one of her saving graces. She considers herself safe in little Covenant Falls, Colorado, but soon finds she isn't, no matter that she has recreated her life there. Clint, too, finds the love of a dog to be the kind of salve on his wounded soul that he needs but never expected to find. As much as he wants to get to know Stephanie, he doesn't expect to stay long, just long enough to get over those blasted blackouts.

When Stephanie's false safety is revealed, Clint has a reason to stay longer, but will she allow the protection he offers? And when a further crisis places her in another kind of danger, what will it mean for Clint if it means he can stay in Covenant Falls?

An engaging story that makes me want to come back again and again to Covenant Falls and the quirky characters who inhabit the place.
