The Exiled Heir #1

Starlight and Shadows

Rate this book
She was taught to fear the darkness. He was born from it.

Unicorns are feared as ferocious beasts—monsters, capable only of murder and malice . . . or so Luna is taught to believe.

Trapped within the walls of the palace grounds, she follows the king’s rules to stay alive—warned that a single scratch could mean her death. But her life unravels when a shadow unicorn shatters all she knows and holds dear. She is left questioning why she’s drawn to this supposed enemy . . . and if he truly is one, why does he keep saving her?

Shoved into a world of magic where safety and freedom are fleeting, Luna must face who she is and choose her allies carefully, all while fighting the pull she feels toward a man who is as dangerous as he is gentle with her. If she can find the courage to let go of the life she once lived, she’ll learn that strength forged in darkness can burn brighter than any star.

Starlight and Shadows is the first book in a slow-burn duology featuring a protector romance with hidden identities that complicate everything and a heroine who refuses to stay powerless. Perfect for readers who love a man who can step back and let her grow into her strength, like in A Court of Thorns and Roses, or the relentless danger and impossible choices of The Serpent & the Wings of Night, and the touch-her-and-die energy in Fourth Wing.

This is a YA/NA fantasy romance with mature themes and eventual steam.

I received this book as an ARC in exchange for an HONEST review.

well buckle up! what a wild ride this book was.

this story is about a girl named Luna. shes a noblewoman in a kingdom of humans. she has a sickness where she could die just from a paper cut, where her blood doesn't clot. so naturally, she's super protected with having strict rules that come straight from the king himself.

this is a fantasy book so cue the fantasy element! UNICORNS! When I first read the blurb for this book, I was slightly skeptical.. cause my 10 year old daughter isnt even into unicorns anymore, but everything else sounded like my cuppa tea so I decided to give it a try!

this isnt a typical unicorn fantasy. the twists snd magic system is so unique, I was instantly intrigued! who wouldn't want to read about a shadow daddy unicorn, who would risk his mission to keep her safe? swoooon.

this book has every element i look for in a book. we've got tension, swoon-worthy men, unique magic system, lots of world building, betrayal, heartbreak, and so much more!

I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves fantasy books.

“I think anyone can be deadly; it’s more of a matter of heart rather than magical abilities.”

Luna is taught to fear unicorns in this realm; they are monstrous creatures who destroy human villages, pillage, kidnap, and murder humans. She doesn’t feel trapped, but her illness makes her fearful of everyone and everything. When she meets him, a shadow unicorn, who she is told to run from. How can she resist this irresistible pull towards him? Can he show her what it is like to be truly free? As she discovers who she is, he helps her along the way. Luna must learn who the real enemy is, what she wants in life, and what it is that she must fight for.

I was immediately drawn in by the relation to “The Last Unicorn” meets “ACOTAR,” two of my favorite things combined. I had to read it instantly. Who doesn’t love a shadow daddy who will burn the world for the woman he loves. The heroine is not your average frail beauty; no, she has a spark inside her to be her own hero. The main male character is not your typical knight in shining armor; he bears the weight and guilt of everyone he must protect, and he is tired of the expectation. That gave me a huge rush. I felt deep vulnerability and connection with the characters. I couldn’t help but be suspicious of everyone and all their actions. Who is the true villain? This book kept me on my toes. It is absolutely a slow burn, but so worth it. I’m intrigued by all the side characters and the other “monsters” that inhabit the unicorn realm. I want more information and backstory on who they are. This book ending had me on the edge of my seat!

Tropes: Forbidden love, shadow magic, hidden identity, unicorn shifters, found family, the growl of who did this to you, enemies to lovers, touch her and die

+Content warnings: graphic violence, imprisonment, torture, death, trauma recovery, and suicidal ideation/attempt.

I was lucky enough to receive this book as an advanced reader copy! As a fellow Canadian, it was so great to read a Canadian author's work. Layla definitely brings pride to Canada with this book!

I greatly enjoyed the writing style and the world building toward this fantasy novel. Layla has a beautiful way with words and writes in a manner that really helps create a visual to the world she's created. From the castle to adventures in the township, it was all brilliant to read and set beautiful pavement for the story overall.

I absolutely adored the unique storyline to this book! Unicorns are common in fantasy novels but to see them perceived as "evil" or antagonistic was brilliant in itself. The twists and turns Luna experiences with navigating how she was brought up and her lineage created a real-life relatable perspective of self-discovery and building courage in yourself. Her character, despite being in a fantasy novel, was relatable given we all endure multiple challenges, fears, disappointments, and growth made her likeable and enjoyable to read.

Luna and Damien's relationship definitely provides Sailor Moon vibes and I AM HERE FOR IT. Damien's character as the MMC was fantastic and I truly enjoyed getting to learn about him and watch him navigate his bond with Luna.

The plot twists and turns were predictable at times but what I appreciated greatly was that Layla did add her own twist to common tropes such as one bed, touch-her-and-die, and fated family. They were built up beautifully and she was able to land each surprise in a way that left me wanting to continue learning what was going to happen next.

Starlight and Shadows was a great read and I greatly enjoyed the cliffhanger I was graciously left with. I will definitely be pursuing the next book to follow what happens next!

I would first like to thank Layla Nickel for giving me the opportunity to read this lovely novel.

After finishing this book my heart is screaming, I have been left breathless by this whirlwind end. I don’t know how I am going to have to wait for the next book to come out! With all the books out with dragon and wolf shifters, it is refreshing to read about something new… unicorn shifters. I love the difference in shadow and light unicorns and the contrast in powers they posses. I never thought unicorns could be bad-ass but I stand corrected after reading this book.

I was enraptured by this book from the first chapter, it’s shocking to read a story where the unicorns are seen as monsters but I loved every bit of it. The fast pace of this novel keeps you on your toes; wanting to know what will happen next. I will admit there were a few times certain characters had me fuming…. But let’s hope Karma works in Eloria. Luna and Damien were the main characters, but Gregory, Corey and Marion brought life to the story- bringing Luna into a new life in support and friendship ( I hope we get more interactions with them in the next book).

Luna is such a wonderful character, she brings such a warmth that would make the grumpiest man melt for her. It’s good to read a character that represents strength in character rather than brute force. While her kindness leads her down certain paths (I won’t spoil it), she stays true to her convictions and doesn’t let the horrors she’s experienced warp her heart. Her development was great, I loved seeing her get out of her shell and become more blunt and confident. I’m excited to see her find the strength she already possesses and prove to everyone she is no damsel.

Damien, my gosh. He protests too much about being a knight, but Luna doesn’t need to hold out for a hero anymore. I don’t know if it was the shadows or the dimples, but I feel in love. I love how he truly sees Luna and doesn’t belittle her desire to help others. The slow burn between these two is killing me, but I love to see their relationship grow. For example, “ I’d probably give you the moon itself if you asked for it” , and “I’ll be whatever you desire if it keeps me in your dreams”.

The world Layla created is so vast, we’ve barely begun to explore, and I can’t wait to learn more about the Darkened One, and more magical beings Eloria holds. With this book being my first arc, I could not have picked a better book to read. I highly recommend this book to those who want to take an adventure with unicorns, magic, and a shadow prince.

ARC Review; my thoughts are my own like ‘em or not.

Before you pick up this book: Can you handle a Unicorn named Gregory?

Luna is the adoptive daughter of nobles, protected from harm and even from the sun because of a rare disorder where if she’s cut, she won’t stop bleeding. One day a shadow unicorn arrives, and she starts to question everything she’s ever been told about not only the dangers of unicorns, but her condition and the great lengths King Hendrix takes to keep her safe.

This is a story about identity as well as being kept in a gilded cage, being seen not as a person but as a tool in the hands of more powerful people. Luna is treated like a glass doll because of her condition; the truth is Luna is a unicorn and the king and his lackeys kept her magic from her, so Luna was innately prevented from tapping into her natural healing ability.

Overall there’s some interesting ideas. Unicorns are seen as incredibly dangerous, and when we come to a massacred village, you understand why some humans hate unicorns. Damien in particular is a warrior, he’s a Prince trained to resist Unicorn Bane so yes, he can easily slaughter a ton of normies. Even though most Unicorns want nothing to do with fighting regular peasants, by the time you see a unicorn it’s probably too late to run. That didn’t make my sympathize with the humans: at one point, King Hendrix tries to make Luna transform so he has several of his people killed to traumatize her, so later on when Luna gets recaptured and parts of her are harvested for research purposes, you are already mad at humanity even though you know decent people like Luna’s family exists.

Overall it’s an enjoyable story about a niave young lady seeking love and a place of belonging, but most of the story she’s captive which makes Luna reactive to much of the storyline. Luna herself was the main reason I gave it only a 3-star review. It’s not that she learned too quickly, she declared many times she didn’t want to be seen as a distressed damsel and then would do something that Damien, the shadow unicorn, needed to help her. I’m good with heroines making mistakes and there being consequences, and she has good excuses: Luna doesn’t know anything about her magic or how to ride a horse or how to do anything the normal adventurer types might already know how to do, much less that yes, some other monsters in the storybooks do exist or how to do most types of basic magic. She didn’t get flung into a typical quest she’s in complete culture shock.

It’s the very end of the novel where after she’s suffered at the hands of others time and time again when she’s active making a decision, she ends up captive yet again, and this half of the story ends with her vying that she would be a terror to the Darkened One. Honey: You’re a stranger in a strange land; good on you for having resolve though. Then I thought about it some more: Damien’s friends knew Luna was the Queen of Thinking with her Heart, and allowed her to get into that situation. In a way, it’s like taking my friend tobogganing once and then saying tomorrow we’re going skiing, and telling them both involve sliding down a hill, and then acting surprised when they’re in a compromised position.

There’s some eventual naughty language and spice, but it’s a slow burn and Damien turns Luna down several times, not because he doesn’t want to but because he thinks Luna is reaching out in an unhealthy manner, so kudos to him for knowing the girl’s going through some trauma. As said, there’s several scenes where characters are slaughtered and when she’s captive, one human harvests her nails and blood, Luna is being tortured so some readers may find it a bit squeamish. In general, gonna recommend this to 16+; it’s far from the most gory or psychologically scarring thing I’ve read but I think this depends on the reader.

I was lucky enough to receive an arc copy of Starlight and Shadows via the author. The official release date is January 23rd, 2026 and I HIGHLY recommend giving it a chance.

Starlight and Shadows is the first book in a slow burn duology, and is about a girl named Luna who is abandoned by her birth family and taken in by the nobles. She’s very sheltered as she has a rare illness, her blood cannot clot, and any injury could mean death. Like all citizens of Ghelvina, she’s taught to fear unicorns (who are also shifters and can appear as human) until she finds out she is one. Her whole life has been a lie, and she finds out those closest to her knew. She meets a shadow unicorn who saves her from trouble and they end up on the run from the king. She’s supposed to be scared of him, he’s the enemy, so why is she so drawn to him? And what isn’t he telling her? Luna must face many secrets, betrayals and lies throughout this book.

Now, for the review, where do I even begin?

The thing that sold me into reading the book was the unicorn shifters. That’s such a unique idea. It may have been done before, but I have NEVER seen that before and I was immediately intrigued. And let me just say. I need the second book right now (dangerous thing to say when the first book is even released yet). The written was so good, the plot was well written. Especially for a debut novel! it’s the kind of the book that you just can’t put down. And the cliffhanger? That was the WORST cliffhanger to end a book on (in the best way. As in, “oh my gosh, I can’t believe that happened, I need to know what happens next,” kind of way). And I do need to know what happens next.

Let me say, the slow burn was so burning! But man do we have some good lines from Damien 🤭. “That smile,” Damien whispered, his voice low. “I don’t think you know what you do to me.” We love a yearning man. “You’re stronger than you give yourself credit for. You are a being made of stars, and darkness, try as it might, can never dim starlight.” These are just two examples of his quotes I loved.

It’s also rare for me to highlight a dedication but I just love this one and had to mention it somewhere: “To those who feel weak, like their power was taken from them. Strength isn’t always loud or unyielding, It’s what refuses to die inside you no matter who tries to break it.”

I don’t really have much else to say! Starlight and Shadows is a deliciously dark and irresistible story that will keep you hooked. I highly recommend it.

What a refreshing story this was. As a child I loved unicorns and now as an adult I got to read an advanced copy of Starlight and Shadows and was taken back to that world.

Luna our FMC is a noble woman who is sick and could die from blood loss with a simple cut. So she is constantly protected by her guard Clyde that she loves dearly. She is not allowed to do anything that could injure her in anyway and is basically a captive.

After a visit from a shadow wielding unicorn, Damien. her world is no longer the same. She was told all her life to fear unicorns, that they are the enemy and must be killed. However, Damien does nothing to harm her. His intentions are unclear and she finds him intruiguing. There is also Nina, who is a unicorn and performs a protection spell to help protect the kingdom and it’s habitants. So are the unicorns really that evil? Or is it someone else in the Kingdom?

After escaping the castle grounds and meeting Marion and Gregory, she will learn things about herself that will have her second guessing all that she knows and her nobility.

I love the interactions between Luna and Damien. He is always. gentle with her and he wants to help her and protect her. Luna will rely on him to help her navigate this information and all that it means. I love the growth we see in till the very last page.

Did I guess a few things before they happened, yes. Did that make me like this book any less, no!

This has potential to be a great series and I look forward to finding out more about Damien and Luna’s journey.

Thank you Layla for the advanced copy in return for an honest review.

✨️ ARC REVIEW ✨️

Luna, taught to fear the darkness, is trapped within the palace grounds, warned by the King that even a single scratch could lead to her death. Damien, born from darkness, tumbles into her life and shatters everything she was taught to believe.

Starlight and Shadows is written with such atmospheric storytelling, it blew me away! This book is about unicorns. UNICORNS. 😮 With a fantastic unique magic system.

This book has twists, slow burn romance that makes you squirm (in a delicious way) and a dangerous swoon-worthy shadow-wielding unicorn. 😍

I felt the start was a little slow, but I'm glad I powered through. Both main characters felt layered and believable, shaped by their pasts and driven by quiet motivations that slowly unfolded on the page. Their dynamic was filled with tension, vulnerability, and just enough restraint to make every shared moment feel real.

Layla's writing was immersive without being too heavy. It took me along the ride with Luna, the twists, the fear and betrayal, the pining and the fights. I was hooked!

If you enjoy fantasy stories with strong character focus, subtle romance, and a dreamy, slightly dark tone, Starlight and Shadows is well worth picking up.

Perfect for readers who love: ACOTAR, Fourth Wing, Shadow and Bone, The Last Unicorn and Once Upon a Broken Heart.

Normally, unicorns are rare and worshipped by humans in most fantasy novels. I love how this one did away with that trope. Unicorns were feared in this one as monsters and something to destroy. I absolutely loved it!

Luna is an interesting character. She is considered weak due to her illness but her spark and strength is in every word and breath she takes. I love how the author wrote Luna! Not weak but not overpowered. Flawed and naive in certain mannerisms but intelligent and quick in other ways. She's an interesting character.

Actually all the characters in this book are interesting. Now, the romance aspect I didnt care too much about. Not because it wasnt good but because everything else was so much better.

The world building and magic building worked so well. It was concise, intricate, and didn't feel separate from the story. For a first read through with this author, I'm incredibly impressed with the world she has created. I know its marketed as ACOTAR meets last unicorn but its a unique world she has created. It deserves its own recognition.

What intrigued me prior to reading the book was the idea of unicorn shifters… and this continued to be my favorite part of the book. I absolutely loved the lore of the unicorns within this world and loved learning more of it. I enjoyed the MMCs, Damien, character and wish we got more of his story in this book but I am sure that is to come. Luna, our FMC, comes across as a little young and naive - which goes along with her character being overly sheltered - but her character and the writing of the book makes this book much more suited towards a YA audience/genre. This wasn’t something I had accounted for so it took me a little by surprise. The storyline was well paced and did not see that twist at the end coming! I was totally caught off guard and can only imagine what’s to come.

This book may interest you if you enjoy unicorn shifters, secrets, hidden identities, & betrayal.

Thank you Layla for this advance copy.

Starlight and Shadows follows Luna a Chronically ill woman who has been sheltered and held back her whole life until her sister Emily helps her sneak out past the castle grounds into the village. She soon discovers she isn’t chronically ill at all but is really a Unicorn. Luna’s story is so heartbreaking. She just wants love and acceptance by her community but all they want is to use her for her magic. She is betrayed at almost everyone turn. You get to see Luna’s growth through the story and the reader is left on a cliffhanger that makes you want book 2 like yesterday!

Thank you Layla Nickel for sending me the arc for this book. I really enjoyed reading this. I thought it was a bit of a slow burn but so worth it.

Luna is raised by adoptive parents thinking she is sick for whole life. Luna goes through finding out lots of truths about her life that she had been lied to about. She meets a guy, Damien, who she finds out is a unicorn. Damien helps her to see the truths about herself and escape the lies she had been told.

I really enjoyed the adventures the 2 faced along the way. The cliff hanger at the end is really making me want the next book like now!!!

3.75 ⭐️

I love supporting Canadians, especially Canadian authors. I think I came across a blurb on threads that intrigued me when I saw a reference to “The Last Unicorn” (hello one of my favourite movies from my childhood)

For a debut book, I am certainly impressed. This was my first unicorn read, and I was a little worried how it would play out. But honestly it was intriguing, albeit a little bit hard to imagine their forms. Reminded me a little bit of Firebird.

I think this did a very good job of setting the stage for a second book, the world was interesting, as well as the magic system. I would have liked to see a little more background and depth to the FMC, the MMC as well.

A story filled with magic, unicorns, betrayal, and lies—yes, please. From the very first pages, I wanted to dive headfirst into this world and steal Luna away. She completely stole my heart.

A dark shapeshifting unicorn with a touch her and die attitude. Amazing.

The twists hit hard, the emotions ran deep, and that ending? It absolutely ruined me in the best possible way. I’m still thinking about it long after turning the final page

"It was then that she realized she had a choice-that everyone, no matter their circumstances had a choice. They could choose to follow fate's path ... or they could resist and endure the consequences of that decision."

"You are a being made of stars," he whispered, "and darkness, try as it might, can never dim starlight."

Unicorns, cute or deadly? I love the re-imagination of the shadow monsters that are typical in romantasy books. It's a new and creative idea that I haven't seen before. This is a FANTASTIC debut book for Layla and she nailed it!

If Luna gets a cut or a scratch, it mean death; but she just wants to lead a normal life. She has lived a life of confinement and unaware of what true freedom feels like, until someone helps her escape from the palace. This moment starts her on a new, exciting, and dangerous adventure!

The world building gets you started and the adventure keeps you hooked! It is a captivating story! Luna learns she doesn't know who to trust, but at times, misplaces her trust. Damien comes into her life and changes everything. Who has been keeping secrets from her?

The unexpected twists and turns in this story are complete page turners! They keep you hooked and eager to continue without pause.

The pacing is spot on and guides you to the next moment. Luna has to figure out her way in the darkness. She has to be strong to endure all she does in the book. I don't want to spoil what happens in the book, so you will need to add it to the top of your TBR! I absolutely LOVED this book!

Wow! Layla's debut is nothing short of impressive! With plans for a duology, I can't wait to see what the second book will bring! It ends on a HUGE cliffhanger and I need the second book, now!!

Thank you Layla and BookFunnel for the ARC. I am leaving my review voluntarily.

I received this book as an ARC. Thank you for this opportunity and while this was not my cup of tea, there were many aspects of this book that I enjoyed.
The last parts of the book are where the story really picks up. The beginning is slow and repetitive
The book does not let the reader think for themselves and deduce things themselves. The obvious is always stated and repeated and the things a reader could deduce are also written.
It feels like everything is being rephrased.
For example:

“With your illness, a minor scratch would be fatal”
has been repeated too many times in too many ways

“They wouldn’t believe a unicorn was here . . . She’d lose any credibility she still had, and likely her reputation too”

Losing credibility and not being believed are nearly synonymous

“Venita always made an effort to include her, something Luna appreciated.”

Yes, of course she appreciates being included by her friend...

“Obviously, he was not used to being refused or rejected. To be fair, it made sense, he was the prince after all”

It is indeed obvious, there was no need to state it twice with so many words.

Other issues about the writing:
“Their hands fit together like two pieces of a puzzle; a puzzle she wished to burn.”

The imagery could be better

“his movement stiff—like a marionette cut loose from its string.”

If a marionette is actually cut from its string, it doesn’t get stiff movements, it just falls and stops moving.

“Nina’s been the only kindhearted unicorn this kingdom has ever seen. Am I supposed to believe you’re be the second?”
A typo

“A breath she hadn’t realized she was holding slipped out ”

This line is overused and are people even making fun of it

Here’s a quote I actually quite liked:
“Luna quickly looked around to see if any cats had died from all the curiosity looming in the air.”

Another issue: Luna
Here are some lovely quotes that describe our heroine from throughout the book:

“It’s nice to meet you! I’m Luna.”
She says this when she is trying to hide her identity after climbing a wall for a moment of freedom. WHY ARE YOU SAYING YOUR REAL NAME

“She stumbled over her own feet and fell, hitting her knees hard on the ground. The pain made her cry out. The moment she let out a sound, sobs took over until she was crying so hysterically she couldn’t breathe.”
She is simply going down a hall to her new room, zero obstacles. She trips and acts overly dramatic, like a child.

“ “I don’t want anything from you.” All she wanted was to yell at him and give him a piece of her mind, but she refrained. What good would screaming and shouting do? He had already managed to put her in the dungeon once; what was stopping him from doing it again?
“Let me at least apologize.” Slowly, he opened the bag, revealing its contents. She squealed with genuine glee. “Brown sugar buns?!” She snatched one from him, forgetting how angry she was”

Wow. That was quick. All it takes is a piece of food for Luna to go from wanting to yell and stay away from this man to “squealing with genuine glee”...
Mind you, she’s not even poor. She eats like a noble. And why is she squealing

“the goblet had been prepared just for her and only contained water. She cursed and turned to where the prince still sat, glaring at him, but he paid her no mind. Why would he joke with her on a night like this?”

So the prince “pranks” her by... giving her water??? And she is mad? Later, the prince puts SALT in her food (ok it was her oatmeal but still). And she becomes furious. ITS JUST SALT. And what kind of “prank” is that? Like haha I put a bit of salt in your food.
Ragebaiting her is easy it seems.

Context: She is hidden in shadows and they cannot see her so she MUST remain silent to not give herself away
“ “The Prince of Shadows,” Harlow answered with a sneer. Luna gasped, quick and sharp. “The—what—of shadows?” ”

Are we serious. YOU CLEARLY HEARD HIM SAY PRINCE, no need to GASP and repeat what he just said outloud. You had one job Luna

“Her noblewoman upbringing forced her to respond with automatic politeness—even towards a murderer ”

Sorry...what?

“ “Uh . . . no, but thank you?” Luna said, once again responding far too politely. “It was nice to meet you and all but—” ”

This is her personality.

“If she could just get to her—just reattach her head—then maybe, somehow, everything would be fine. ”

Yes Luna, whatever makes you feel better

“ “It’s too much,” she choked. “So . . . so utterly broken.”
“What is?”
Her hand slammed to her heart, as she squeaked out the word. “Me.” ”

WHY IS SHE SQUEAKING. Youre not a mouse luna

Context: She is a human riding on a UNICORN (like a horse). Damien is a male unicorn, currently in the shape of a unicorn.
“As the thrill of their escape quieted, Luna became keenly aware of the sway of her hips matching Damien’s graceful movements. Her attention hyperfixated on every point of contact between them: The way his powerful muscles rippled under her, his warmth radiating through her legs, seeping into her skin. Something inside her tightened, and heat settled low in her belly. Her mind wandered traitorously, imagining a different kind of rhythm —one hidden beneath tangled sheets. Instinctively, she squeezed her thighs, ”

I did not want to read about beastiality. I did not need to hear about her fantasies while she is on the back of a HORSE with a horn.

The story:

Why is there is a mention of Latin and Saskatoon berries in a fantasy book?
And at some point a random man plucks a macaroon from Luna and eats it???

The first part of the story is very slow, not much happens.
However the story ends with a STRONG ENDING with a twist I did not see coming. May Luna stop being so naive plssss
But I enjoyed the last bits of the story despite the slow start.

TLDR: The writing could be improved, Luna could be less naive and make better choices and the best parts of the story are near the end so keep reading, it’s worth it!

I was lucky enough to get an Arc copy of this book.

I want to begin this review by mentioning something I love that was done before the book even truly begins story-wise. Most books will have content warnings or triggers. Though I've never seen a content warning that have section out a specific chapter, in case someone might need to skip a section. It states, "if you prefer to avoid the trigger scene (suicidal ideation), you can skip chapter 25 and resume at chapter 26 without losing the main plot." This, I believe, is a very very helpful aspect I wish more would include. Mental health is important, and people might wish to read books even though triggers might be listed. The whole book might not be triggering, and it might just be a chapter or a section. It is beneficial to know which section or chapter can be skipped without losing the main plot. I also love notes on language. Some might pick up a book and not realize that an author might use a form of English that is different than that of the reader. In this case, the book is written in Canadian English.

Now, let's get into the review of the story itself.

It is rare to find unicorns as some shadowy creatures of darkness and evil. Which is how unicorns are introduced at the beginning of the books. When Luna and Clyde are in the garden (of secrets), a unicorn comes to attack. Usually, you might find unicorns as misunderstood or creatures of light and goodness. Though these shadow unicorns seem to be evil and enjoy attacking people, causing chaos and destruction.

A detail about Luna, she is a noble woman, but she loves Clyde, her guard. We find out in chapter two that she is adopted because her disease (blood unlike others because it won't clot if she is injured) scared her birth mother away, apparently. Thus, Darius and Angie took her in as their own daughter. Darius worked for the King, yet Angie seemed to have been from a working family beforehand. I would like to ask how this dynamic works. Angie knows her way around a kitchen and doesn't like to depend on help. Despite her daughter (Emily) wishing they could --asking why have servants if they were going to have to do things themselves anyway.

Why is it so taboo for Luna to have some romance with Clyde? Yes, he is her guard--- but she isn't some noble woman by birth (that we know at the beginning of the tale). Not just that, but her mother seems to have been of the working class who married up. Luna seems like a prisoner or a bird in a gilded cage with how everyone seems to treat her (except maybe Clyde).

I do not like Angie; I get that she is overprotective. She means well, but I feel like she is the one who holds the key to Luna's cage, not Darius, not the King-- her. She seems not respond well when the King states that Luna must attend the ceremony. She seems to be too overprotective, masquerading as meaning well, but perhaps she holds more to the story than just that. She seems to be a walking contradiction to so much already, and this is just three chapters into the book.

Nina-- how is she working with the King? Why does she do a protection ceremony if she is a unicorn herself? I write this one bit at a time--- so this is a thought I do not see how it makes sense. Though I'm sure Nina is somehow connected to our mysterious shadow unicorn that visits Luna.

However, I feel like Emily's question to Luna about what type of unicorn she would be if she were one was a type of foreshadowing of what was to come. We know Luna is different, and her mother seemed to be scared off and left her because of her rare disease. Makes you wonder if she is even human to begin with, or at least fully human. Why else would she always need shading from the sun? She has been told that if she gets hurt, she will bleed out and die. Though nothing about why she was constantly being shielded from the sun.

Nightwalkers? Did I miss something in the earlier portions of the book, or did this loredrop just come out of nowhere with no explanation? They mentioned the shadow unicorns and The Darken One at the beginning, but closer to the middle of the book, if not even past that, the term nightwaker is used.

As you read, you do get to see that foreshadowing is for sure a thing. Which is a good thing, then you undergo having your mind messed with. Yes, this makes it a good book, but some plot holes do exist. Things could have been explained sooner. Learning with the main character is a way, but not when the main character knows terms such as what a nightwalker is-- but the readers haven't learned the lore. Unless I missed something completely in the first part of the book.

Final thoughts after finishing the book....

Luna's life can be classified as a series of lies, betrayals, and chaos.
She just wants to be normal and not have to be seen as having her illness. She got a wish, but it wasn't what she expected. Illness ended up being the fact that she was a unicorn. She gained, she lost, and this is her story of the constant give and take. She makes questionable choices because, despite everything, she is somewhat naive and wants to trust others even though she continues to make the same series of choices over and over again. Even if the people might change.

The story is interesting.

Some little side notes. Clyde is a red flag and only pretends to care. I would have loved to know what exactly happened. His fate seemed more up in the wind, as it seemed when Damien spoke to Luna of going back to cut out his tongue-- he seemed to be alive. I feel like he might come back for round two when it comes to the second book in this series. I would also like to note he is like a mixture of Matt Donovan (The Vampire Diaries show), Callix (The Stars are Dying), and Jack Barlow (Fourth Wing). If you know, you know. The man pretends to have redeeming qualities, only to use Luna. Though Luna also continues to make wrong choice after wrong choice.

Some of the plot twists in the book were truly exciting.

I truly do look forward to the next book in this series

My first draft of this review was almost 2k. Got to chop it down. First, I want to thank the Nickel’s for letting me become an ARC reader.

Now, onto the review. It’s a good 3.3–3.5/5 for me. But I can’t do 3.5 so 3 it is.

The world building the phenomenal. And when I say phenomenal, I mean PHENOMENAL! Nickel’s doesn’t shove down the world building in your throat. You know that you’re coming into a world where unicorns are evil and hated and it’s explained in a way that makes the book seem natural. Even the magic of the unicorn realm to this leaf transportation system to the history and to...everything about the world and how it's told is just chefs kiss.

Oh! And the whole IDEA? Of unicorns being EVIL? Magnificent! Like?! Who would’ve thought about it! WHO? It’s a great and new twist on something so classic and timeless!

Continuing on, the start is…kind of a slump before it gets going. But the first whole half of the book is... kind of a slump..ish? Chapter 1-5 kind of is, but pass that it kind of picks up too before we get into the main action. Although, it is understandable because Luna - our lovely female main character - has been sheltered her entire life so she's very wary, but then her life is ruined in front of her face because of our lovely male lead, Damien.

I have a very complicated relationship with Luna, I understand her character, growing up with helicopter parents and all. But..throughout the story, there are points where I do feel like her character growth has reverted itself in the second half of the book for the plot since the plot points builds her character development, but only because of certain things happen due to her naivety which I belief she has somewhat grown out of due to the trauma she’s endured.

And Damien, gods, I do have a problem with him too. On one hand, I do think there’s a mischaracterization of him being trouped as a “shadow daddy”. He’s more like a black Doberman with a hidden golden heart. On the other hand, I do like how his shadow power has a limit (cough cough Xaden Riorson cough cough) and how he can’t always save Luna. I think that is realistic, the most realistic shadow daddy I've seen. Although, I hope we get more of his POV in the second book because I don't just want to critique just Luna and let him get away from it. (I'm a fair reader).

Although some plot lines I feel like shouldn’t bet exist because the characters are too smart to make the stupidest — and I mean STUPIDEST — of choices. I go get the plot has to move on even with the sacrifices with the intellectual of the characters.

I do adore its spice free. I don’t like how close it’s been to the spiciness although. I do think it could’ve done without it and it would still be the same.

Other characters created. GODS! THOSE CHARACTERS ARE AMAZING! Especially Luna’s sister (not blood related) Emily and Prince Kieran. Their subplot of romance I was actually wayyyyyy more invested. Emily is general is such a great character, she’s a gossip but uses it to her advantage. She wants Kieran to fall in love with her to protect Emily. They DO FALL IN LOVE! But I need something small, maybe about the aftermath of Luna leaving and how Emily and Kieran deal with that. If there’s trials of their love. For Emily to use gossip to help advance her in the court so she can marry Kieran, how Kieran’s hands are tied because of his father and politics. I just, gods, I love their characters so much.

The ending of the book made me so mad. So! So! So! Mad! Like, I understand on the choices of what made Luna do something irrevocably STUPID! I need the second good for her revenge.

I do like the book, but what only really makes it jump from 4 to 3.5 for me is, again, the swap of the characters intellect to carry on the plot at a few points in the story.

But not only is Nickel great at world building, but she is also really good at is making you feel…multiple, like multiple emotions for the characters. Whether good or bad. You will feel something for them.

Unicorns — but not the pastel, childlike kind you grew up with. The dangerous, haunting, shape-shifting kind? Yes please😍

I received a free copy of Starlight and Shadows, and every thought here is completely my own — and honestly? I feel lucky to have discovered this before it fully takes off.

This is the first book in a slow-burn duology, and it follows Luna, a girl abandoned by her birth family and raised among nobles. Her life has never truly been her own. Sheltered, monitored, and treated as fragile because of a rare illness that prevents her blood from clotting, even the smallest injury could cost her life. Fear has shaped her world — especially the fear of unicorns. In Ghelvina, unicorns are monsters. Shifters. Enemies. Creatures to be hunted and destroyed.

Except Luna is one of them.

The unraveling of that truth is where the story sinks its claws in. Her identity, her upbringing, even the people closest to her — all built on lies. When a shadow unicorn saves her, everything she’s been taught collides with instinct. He should be her enemy. She should be terrified. Instead, she’s drawn to him in ways she can’t explain. And as they flee from the king, secrets begin to surface — not just about the kingdom, but about him. What is he hiding? Who can she trust? The story weaves betrayal, buried truths, and shifting loyalties into a tense, emotionally charged journey.

What immediately hooked me was the concept of unicorn shifters. It feels so fresh. Maybe it exists somewhere out there, but I’ve never seen it done like this, and the execution makes it feel entirely new. The mythology, the fear surrounding them, the political danger — it adds weight and edge to something typically seen as soft or whimsical.

And the writing? Especially for a debut novel, it’s impressive. The pacing pulls you forward in that “just one more chapter” way until suddenly it’s 3 a.m. The plot is layered, emotional, and consistently engaging. Then there’s the cliffhanger — and wow!🤩 It’s the kind that leaves you staring at the last page in disbelief. The good kind of burn and suspense in a book that I didn’t think I needed. The “I need book two immediately and it’s not even out yet” kind of ending is AMAZING!

The romance is a true slow burn — the kind that aches in the best way. Damien delivers some unforgettable lines that make the yearning almost unbearable.

“That smile,” Damien whispered, his voice low. “I don’t think you know what you do to me.”
And this one absolutely stayed with me:
“You’re stronger than you give yourself credit for. You are a being made of stars, and darkness, try as it might, can never dim starlight.”

A man who yearns is a man who earns, right?!

Even the dedication deserves recognition, which is rare for me to say since most of them are often similar to others, but this one truly spoke to me.

“To those who feel weak, like their power was taken from them. Strength isn’t always loud or unyielding, It’s what refuses to die inside you no matter who tries to break it.”

It sets the emotional tone of the story beautifully.

Overall, Starlight and Shadows is dark, gripping, and emotionally charged, with a unique fantasy concept and a romance that burns slowly but intensely. It’s the kind of story that pulls you in, breaks your heart a little, and leaves you desperate for the next book.

Thank you Layla J. Nickel for writing this amazing story full of originality and adventure! It was amazing to explore in your world for a little while and I can not wait for book 2!🙏🥰

Highly, highly recommended. 10/10🔥❤️😍

⭐ 3.5 stars

Starlight and Shadows has a genuinely intriguing premise and plenty of potential, but it left me feeling conflicted overall.

One of the strongest elements of the book is its world-building. I’ve read some shifter novels, but unicorns were completely new to me, and that alone made me excited to dive in. The idea of unicorns as feared beings is a unique and refreshing take, and I really appreciated that aspect of the story.
While much of the plot is fairly predictable, the twist at the end did catch my attention and left me curious about where the series might go next.

That said, my biggest struggle with the book was the female main character, Luna. I understand that she begins the story sheltered, naïve, and heavily protected with very limited knowledge of the world outside her bubble. That setup makes sense. What I found difficult, however, was the lack of character growth throughout the entire book. There are multiple moments where Luna should logically learn something from her experiences, yet she continues to view the world through the same naïve, rose-tinted lens.

She repeatedly makes the same mistakes, especially when it comes to trusting humans, despite being warned over and over again. Each time she’s betrayed, she’s shocked all over again, which quickly became frustrating. There were also a few scenes involving her and her guard that genuinely made me question her judgment and intelligence. By the end of the book, she’s significantly more traumatised, but not meaningfully more mature, which made it hard for me to empathise with or fully invest in her character.

On the other hand, Damien was a solid and grounding presence in the story. I appreciated that he supports Luna while still maintaining clear boundaries, particularly in recognising that she’s using him as a way to escape her trauma rather than truly connect. His role added emotional balance and stability to the narrative.

The pacing is another mixed point. The beginning is quite slow, but the story does pick up after the halfway mark. While many plot beats are straightforward, some of the underlying ideas were enjoyable and kept me engaged enough to continue.

One additional issue for me was the language, which didn’t always feel consistent with the time period the story appears to be set in. At times, this pulled me out of the immersion.

Overall, Starlight and Shadows has a compelling concept and some strong ideas, but the lack of development in the FMC held it back for me. I’m hopeful that the author follows through on the premise they’ve set up and allows Luna to grow in the next book—because she really needs to move beyond the damsel-in-distress role and into her own strength. I’m cautiously interested in continuing the series, but that growth will be essential for me going forward.

Mild Spoilers Below

Starlight and Shadows delivers a title that clicks brilliantly into place near the end of the book, adding a satisfying layer of meaning to the journey.

The story explores the tension between good and evil—and how those lines shift depending on perspective and the information each character has. In this world, humans and unicorns are enemies. Humans believe unicorns are monsters who steal families and kill without mercy, while unicorns see humans as butchers who harvest them for magical parts. The magic system built on this conflict is fresh, imaginative, and unlike anything I’ve read before, which I really appreciated.

Worldbuilding
The worldbuilding is a standout. The story moves seamlessly from the house where Luna grew up, through lush gardens, into a palace full of hidden passages and trap doors, and finally into the lands she’s never been allowed to explore. Each setting feels distinct and memorable thanks to the author’s vivid detail.

Characters
Every character has a clear look, personality, and purpose. Some I liked immediately; others were rude or delightfully annoying; and one in particular cast a shadow over my mind in a way that felt necessary and impactful for the story.

Pacing & Experience
The pacing stays steady and engaging, giving Luna’s story room to unfold naturally. I felt like I was right beside her on the adventure—and I absolutely enjoyed the brown sugar buns, macaroons, and cookies along the way.

Ending
I personally love when a book ends with the characters I care about landing in a safe, grounded place—a moment where I can pause, breathe, and feel settled, even if the next book promises danger. Starlight and Shadows offers a clear conclusion for this installment, though it does jump quickly back into action to set up what’s coming next. That’s a perfectly valid choice, even if my personal preference leans toward a softer landing.

Either way, it won’t stop me from reading the next book. I’m genuinely looking forward to continuing the series.

I'm gonna date myself, but I was in LOVE with unicorns in the 80's. I had them on every wall. I had miniature unicorns on every surface in my room. I had (still have) a unicorn blanket for my bed and I even had personalized stationery with a picture of a unicorn head on it. Well I also had a boyfriend in the ARMY stationed in Germany, so I used that stationery to write letters to him. He took one of my letters to a very good tattoo artist and had that unicorn tattooed on his left arm as his very first tattoo. He has now been my husband for 33 years. Anyway, about this book...you will not be disappointed. Every other serious unicorn story leaves me feeling like something was missing or it would have been so much better if... I'm telling you this story has it all. The only thing i didn't like about this book is that it ended. The main characters are unicorn shifters who are magical. The book is a slow burn romance between a unicorn prince and a woman who didn't know she was a unicorn until after she meets the prince. There is very little spice, I would rate it as PG. It is very refreshing to read an adult fantasy book that is this clean. I would let my teenager read this book but it is not geared toward YA it is written for adults. There is some graphic torture mentioned and depicted throughout the story. Unicorns are not rare in this story they are a normal part of life. However, they are enemies to humans but as the book says, "humans are the real monsters." Each unicorn has a specialized gift of magic. She doesn't know what her specialized gift is or even how to control her magic because she was rsised as a human. It's just everything I have always wanted to see/read in a story about unicorns. The book doesn't really end, you can definitely tell there is a sequel coming but it doesn't have a horrible cliff hanger just enough for you to look forward to more. And I can't wait for the next book.

First, thank you Ms. Nickel for the ARC!

Starlight and Shadows had a really intriguing premise—I've read a lot of shifter novels, but unicorns are new to me, and that alone made me excited to dive in. Also, unicorns are the bad guys!? NO!!! The world and concept felt fresh, and there were a lot of positive things. I enjoyed the worldbuilding, I enjoyed the premise of the story, but there were a few things that held it back for me.

One of the biggest issues for me was the main character’s development. She didn’t feel like she truly grew over the course of the book and kept making the same mistakes again and again, which became frustrating. I was hoping to see more depth and evolution, but it never quite got there. Instead I got frustrated...really..? She did it again??? UGH! I found it hard to empathize with her and never really got invested in her character.

The writing style also held this book back for me. While the story itself was enjoyable, the writing felt juvenile and leaned much more toward young adult than adult fantasy. It felt repetitive, and very predictable. I knew immediately that Luna was a unicorn shifter and hidden into human society. The reason why she was hidden; well, that was a shock when I found out. I'm also pretty positive I know one of the "twists" that will show up in book two, but obviously I can't confirm that until is written. (mates????) With the writing style; I also felt that the language didn't really flow with the time period that the book was supposed to be set in.

I did really enjoy the MMC....very touch her and die vibes. Morally gray. I'll take it. Not to mention he's a gorgeous black unicorn.

The final bit of the book; now that got exciting!! I will read the next book as I'm invested now, but that final chapter had me on the edge of my seat.

Overall between a 3-3.5 for me.

I’m going to be honest, this book started out rough and I almost DNF but I’m glad I stuck through it! Parts 2 and 3 got so much better as the action and adventure kicked in. Though based in entirely different worlds, I think if you liked “Once Upon a Broken Heart” this will be right up your alley. The world building was pretty good and there’s lots of twists and turns although it does end in a cliffhanger so be on the lookout for book 2 🙈

"Thrust into a world of magic where safety and freedom are fleeting, Luna must face who she is and choose her allies carefully, all while fighting the pull she feels toward this man. If she can find the courage to let go of the life she once lived, she'll learn that strength forged in darkness can burn brighter than any star.

'Starlight and Shadows’ is the first book in a slow-burn duology featuring a protector romance with hidden identities that complicate everything and a heroine who refuses to stay powerless. Perfect for readers who love a man who can step back and let her grow into her strength, like in A Court of Thorns and Roses, or the relentless danger and impossible choices of The Serpent & the Wings of Night, and the touch-her-and-you-die energy in Fourth Wing.”

This book is a beautifully written, emotionally immersive fantasy that stayed with me long after I finished reading. The author’s writing style is atmospheric and fluid. The close third person POV keeps you deeply connected to Luna’s inner world, which suits such a character driven story extremely well.
One of the book’s greatest strengths is how it explores protection versus control, autonomy and quiet resilience. Luna’s strength is shown through endurance and self reflection rather than physical power and her emotional journey feels raw and believable. I particularly admired how Layla J. Nickel handles the darker, heavier themes (trauma, captivity, and moral complexity) are treated thoughtfully giving them emotional weight without feeling like it was padding. It’s rare to see such sensitive topics handled with care while still driving tension and the character growth all at the same time.

NOTE *This book has some darker elements but they are purposeful tied closely to the main character’s growth. If you enjoy fantasy with emotional depth, morally complex situations as well as a slow build that rewards your patience, this is definitely worth reading.*

That said, the pacing is slower, especially in the middle with a heavy focus on internal conflict and emotional thinking. I personally appreciated this but some people who prefer fast moving plots may find parts of the story a bit heavy and slow.
Overall, this is a strong, very character focused fantasy with meaningful themes and a deliberate build up. I’d recommend it to readers who enjoy emotionally driven stories, morally gray worlds and a slower burn that prioritizes depth over speed.

Luna was raised in the Kingdom of Grythorn, taught from a young age that she had a rare medical condition, resulting in her constantly being surrounded by guards and assistants, in order to ensure she never got hurt, or exposed to the sun’s rays. Wanting a break from her restrictions, she sneaks beyond the palace walls where she meets a mysterious stranger, who helps undercover truths kept hidden for her entire life.

Having always heard stories of unicorns and the atrocities they’ve committed, she is initially weary of her attraction to Damien, especially as he seems to keep his own secrets. When she is forced into a situation where she can either lose everything she holds dear, including her life, or trust the stranger who may wield shadows, but has protected her in their every encounter, Luna must decide whether the greater risk is to stay or go.

I received an early copy of this book from the author and I really enjoyed it. The story itself has a slower build up, but it packs a lot of punch and there is quite a bit of action. While the book is a fantasy, it was interesting to see the parallels of the current world, where one group is framed as the enemy, but the people making the accusations show themselves to be just as horrible, if not moreso, than those they are accusing. Damien is clearly not your average MMC, weighed down by the expectations everyone has of him being their saviour, it’s clear he is just looking for a true connection. And Luna has been deceived so many times in her life, it’s hard for her to know who to trust. The book ended in a major cliffhanger, so I’m looking forward to seeing how things unfold.
