Gildermog Hall

Rate this book
When Toby Seton is sent to spend the Easter holidays of 1998 with his grandparents in the quiet village of Gildermog, he expects little more than homemade lunches, country lanes, and the occasional crossword puzzle. Instead, he stumbles upon the village’s most enduring legend: the decades-old disappearance of local teenager Harry Grouse, who stole a vintage biplane and vanished without a trace.

With the help of Melissa, a sharp-eyed girl from the local tea room, Toby begins to uncover fragments of the past. But the closer they get to the truth, the more the story stops feeling like a mystery… and starts feeling like someone’s life.

Warm, atmospheric, and quietly suspenseful, Gildermog Hall follows two young teens as they navigate friendship, courage, and the lingering echoes of a disappearance the village has never quite forgotten.

Gildermog Hall unfolds gently, moving at an even pace through the everyday rhythms of life in the quiet town of Gildermog. But for our curious main character, Toby, things are not quite as ‘quiet’ as they seem once he discovers something intriguing. Thankfully, he has a wonderful friend, Melissa, who joins him in investigating the mysterious disappearance tied to Gildermog’s legend.

Harry’s story left a deep impression on me—the human in me, both as a parent and as a child. No child should ever have to endure generational trauma. And if there is anything that can be done to prevent it, that step should be taken immediately. Without giving too much away, there are a few pages that explore traumatic family experiences, which are truly heartbreaking. However, I was relieved to see the author guided the story toward a heartwarming ending. I sensed it more than halfway through, and I loved it even more for that.

Stories like this—fantasy fiction or not—always remind me that while life can be harsh and sometimes unbearable, the hope within us (that small, steady light) can lead us toward a better world waiting ahead. We simply have to keep pushing forward and never doubt ourselves. We are just as important as the person standing next to us. Though the story begins simply, it exceeded my expectations in the depth of fulfillment and satisfaction it brought me as a reader. I have already made a note to read it again—next time with my kids.

“We’re curious creatures, Toby, and if we don’t know how to explain something, we can’t help but fill in the blanks ourselves. That’s why we find the unexplained so fascinating. Because we like the idea of something being unexplained. We’re drawn to it. We like to feel just a little bit haunted by it all. It sort of… warms us, and chills us, at the same time. But then we like to solve it as well, don’t we?”

I absolutely loved this book from start to finish.

If you enjoy cosy mysteries, this is such a treat. The story transports you to the English countryside, with all its charm, quirky characters, and a lovely nostalgic nod to the 1990s.

The writing is beautiful and immersive, and I really appreciated how thoughtfully it explores trauma. It feels honest and nuanced, acknowledging the complicated emotions involved—guilt, pain, and even moments of sympathy for the perpetrator. Most of all, it offers a sense of hope, reminding us that while difficult experiences can shape us, they don’t have to define who we are.

The book had me completely invested and the plot twists kept me guessing and turning the pages. It had a way of effortlessly pulling me in.

I thoroughly recommend reading this book, you'll feel warmer on the inside when you do.
