The Vampire, The Tutor, and The Madman

Rate this book
The Vampire, The Tutor, and The Madman is an action driven novel full of monsters, mysteries, and pure evil hiding in an ancient castle deep in the remote mountains of southern China.

Jonathon, a wayfaring English teacher, is running from his past through travel and alcohol. He takes a job from a mysterious employer who is nauseatingly wealthy and full of secrets.

Up against wolves, bandits, mutant monsters, mad scientists, and his own demons Jonathon risks all to save a gorgeous mute scullery maid and get away wildly wealthy.

The Vampire, The Tutor, and The Madman is a potent cocktail of Dracula, The Island of Dr. Moreau, Mountain Man, and The 47th Samurai. Not for the squeamish or the quickly offended.

The Vampire, The Tutor, and The Madman is a 4‑star, blood‑splattered, monster‑munching fever dream with a sense of humour sharp enough to cut through all the gore. It reads like someone took Dracula, Dr. Moreau, a mountain‑man survival guide, and a backpack full of questionable life choices, shook them violently, and dumped the result into a remote Chinese castle full of things that definitely should not exist.

Jonathon is the perfect kind of disaster protagonist — a wayfaring English teacher running from his past, his problems, and probably several hangovers. He accepts a job from a man so wealthy and suspicious you can practically smell the generational curses on him. And then the book just goes. Wolves. Bandits. Mutant horrors. Mad scientists. A mute scullery maid who deserves better than every single thing happening around her. Jonathon stumbling through it all like a man who’s been handed a quest he absolutely did not sign up for.

The humour is what makes it sing. It’s dry, self‑aware, and perfectly timed, the kind of humour that sneaks in between the carnage and makes you snort when you really shouldn’t be laughing. It keeps the story from drowning in its own darkness and gives Jonathon this scrappy, reluctant‑hero charm that works far better than it has any right to.

The whole thing feels like a pulp adventure novel that grew fangs and a personality. It’s action‑driven, chaotic, and gleefully unhinged, but it never forgets to be fun. The monsters are monstrous, the villains are villainous, and the castle is basically a character in its own right — ancient, secretive, and absolutely full of things that want to eat you.

It’s not for the squeamish, but if you like your horror with a wink and your adventure with a body count, it’s a wild, entertaining ride.

This book puts you in the China highlands for a very true-to-genre setting of a set of personalities engaged in a, mystery of what exactly is going on! It's a great fly-through page turner and that's exactly what I want out of my fiction. Easy reading and very follow-able from one put-down and pick-up to the next.

An absolute wild ride with a distinct and darkly funny lead. The style is distinctive; sharp and no nonsense. It'll have you putting it down at the end wondering just what the hell was that in the best way possible. Would make for a insanely fun movie adaptation.
