She came home broken. She didn’t expect three rugged Montana ranchers to piece her back together.
When Emma Hayes returns to the ranch she swore she’d never see again, she brings nothing but her husky, a car full of memories, and a heart split open by betrayal. The house is falling apart, the barns are crumbling, and her past still lingers in every shadow.
She expects silence. Except she’s not alone.
Three powerful cattlemen stand waiting, each one determined to help her rebuild a life she thought she’d lost forever.
Walker, the steady, dark-haired rancher with a voice that settles her storm. Owen, the tattooed protector with a quiet intensity that sees straight through her walls. Mason, the soft-spoken cowboy with a smile warm enough to melt winter.
They don’t just offer her support. They offer her safety. They offer her belonging. And they offer her something she never dreamed she could have, a love big enough for all three of them.
Set against sweeping Montana mountains, Dark Mountain Ranch is a cozy, emotional, open-door Why Choose romance filled with healing, found family, slow-burn tension, protective cowboys, and heart-melting intimacy.

This book was given to me as an ARC As I person who loves RH and a heroine who is a little broken, I knew this book would be right up my street. And boy did it not disappoint, I absolutely loved Emma and her guys, the way they adored her had me in my feels. This book is a must if you love cowboy romance/found family/RH and small town romance. Can’t wait for the next one :)
Okay, I'll admit it: I totally judged this book by its cover. I usually cringe when there are people on the front, but I ended up enjoying this way more than I expected! I was hooked from the very first chapter.
Not only do you get one hot cowboy, you get three-and they definitely did not disappoint. The spice was perfect; it was high-heat without being overwhelming. But beyond the steam, there was an actual plot and plenty of suspense. I loved the story of Emma returning home years after running away to inherit her late mother's broken-down ranch. Enter Walker, Owen, and Mason, who save her in more ways than she ever imagined. They each have such distinct personalities that balance Emma perfectly. The suspense was predictable at the end, but it was still very entertaining for me!

“She looks small against the backdrop of the worn old house, but there's something solid about her. A strength she doesn't know she's carrying.”
“I give her my most charming smile. Not the cocky one, not the showman one. The real one. The one I save for moments that matter.”
“Looks like our future just walked in.”
“You're everything. Every damn thing.”
“As my eyes finally drift closed, cocooned between them, I know one thing with absolute certainty. I'm home.”
It was fine, not much real backstory though or deep insight into the characters. But it was an easy read.
-Multi pov- most fmc though -Their ages? Haven’t a clue -1 h, 3 H’s -Why choose with no mm- although the guys have shared before. It’s always been their preference to have one woman that they hope to settle down with but it never worked out before, but no real mention of their past or when they were last with anyone. No safety talk at all when they start sleeping together, no condoms and no mention of being clean, birth control, last times, that they usually use protection etc -No owd/omd at all -no third act breakup -HFN -epilogue sets up next book for the h’s stepsister

Loved the plot and how their relationship developed. Emma has a great heart and I love how she is so attached to Bella and the men also have a great relation with the Bella. It a heart warming , great story and can’t wait for the next book!
This book was given to me as an ARC here is my honest and voluntarily review. I didn’t think I was going to like it as much as I did . It’s a romance that combines a cowboy life with a deeper narrative about found family , personal growth and relationships. From the start, the mountain ranch setting feels immersive and atmospheric, creating the perfect backdrop for a story filled with tension, healing, and connection.
The book hit me from the first chapter It kept me interested wanting to know more about.
Dark Mountain Ranch by Angie Nel follows the story of Emma Hayes, a young woman who returns to her family’s ranch, only to find herself caught up in a love triangle with a number of rugged cowboys. It is a romance novel with more than a touch of naughtiness, and has all the hot and steamy passion you would expect.
I really enjoyed the introduction to this book. There is a sense of loneliness to Emma, a sense of abandonment and desolation, and this is mirrored in the state of the ranch when she arrives. They are, in a way, a reflection of one another, and as Emma starts to fix the things around her, she can slowly start to fix herself. Montana is full of ‘dust and broken dreams’ to her, but she soon finds more than she was expecting.
The men in this story, Mason, Walker and Owen, are quickly introduced and soon bond with Emma, leading to a flirty tension which fills the first half of the book. Walker comes across as genuine and grateful in their first meet, Mason too kind and supportive, and loyalty seems to be key to all the men. They owe a debt of gratitude to Emma’s father, which has helped keep the ranch from bankruptcy, and their willingness to support and teach her soon brings her along. Not only is the romance kept for the characters, but the hot Montana wilderness has its own romantic features, and we are frequently reminded that living this sort of life is hard and rugged, with threats, turmoil, animals to tame, and hard labor always required to get through the day. I loved the description Emma gave of herself after working on the ranch with Mason, and also the community feel which follows her as she grows more accustomed to the way of life.
Emma has ‘Montana grit’ and has a selfish yet caring attitude. I loved how she fought off the developers after her land and how she seemed genuinely torn between the men all after her affection. There is a quiet determination to her. The author makes us wait for the more steamy parts of the book (about half way through) but when they arrive they do so in style. The rest of the book lets up a little (to make way for a different, more sinister kind of action), but we soon return to what we expect from a Western Romance.
I enjoyed the passion that came from these characters and the danger towards the end and the developer plot was thrilling to read. I came for the steamy romance but was captivated by more than that, and with characters as fun as this, Dark Mountain Ranch was one joyous and fun read.
Dark Mountain Ranch by Angie Nel completely pulled me into its dusty, rugged world and did not let go 🤠🔥
Emma Hayes returns to her family’s broken-down Montana ranch carrying loneliness, abandonment, and a whole lot of unresolved pain, and the ranch mirrors her perfectly. As she starts repairing fences, buildings, and land, she’s also slowly putting herself back together, and I loved how deeply intertwined her healing was with the setting itself. Montana feels harsh, lonely, and full of “broken dreams” at first… but it doesn’t stay that way.
And then there are the men 😮💨 Mason, Walker, and Owen. Three very different cowboys, each with their own personalities, strengths, and quiet wounds. Walker feels steady and genuine, Mason is pure golden-retriever energy, and Owen is broody and reserved in the way that always gets me. Their loyalty, to each other, to the ranch, and to Emma, was one of my favorite parts of the story, and the found-family dynamic really shines.
The tension builds slowly at first, filled with flirtation, longing, and just enough restraint to make the payoff worth it. When the spice finally arrives halfway through… it arrives 🔥 The heat is high without being overwhelming, and the chemistry between all four characters feels natural and earned. I also appreciated that there’s more here than just romance, there’s danger, suspense, and a developer plot that added stakes and kept me turning pages.
Emma herself has serious Montana grit. She’s stubborn, caring, and quietly determined, especially when it comes to protecting her land. I loved watching her stand her ground, even when she’s torn emotionally. While I would’ve loved deeper exploration of some of the characters’ past traumas, the relationships never felt forced, and the emotional connection kept me invested.
Sweet, steamy, suspenseful, and heartfelt, Dark Mountain Ranch delivered exactly what I wanted from a why choose western romance, and then surprised me with more. And that ending?? I’m already impatient for book two 😌🔥
As an avid reader of why choose romances and country boy, small town tropes I enjoyed this book.
Angie does a good job of setting scenes, building connections and back stories, making it easy to picture the ranch and its inhabitants. The majority of the story is written from Emma’s POV, with the occasional chapter from the perspective of one of the men.
Personally I found some of the storylines rushed and not fully explained. All three men are said to have experienced trauma but it’s explained away in a sentence or two and not really fully discussed or brought up again besides a short conversation with Mrs A. I would’ve liked to have learned more about their story. I really enjoyed the tension Angie created within the plot, it kept me engrossed and eager to get all the answers.
The relationships also move at a fast pace though they don’t feel forced. They just lacked, very slightly, in tension that I crave in a romance. Though generally I opt for a series rather than standalone, so it’s not a criticism of her writing style at all. Just what I’m used to reading.
I found all the characters to be loveable and easy to like. Walker is the ring leader, Mason the funny gold retriever type and Owen the quiet and brooding sort. There’s also the old friend Lily and Mrs A, I would’ve liked to have read more interactions with the other female characters.
All in all I liked this book despite my preferences over minor aspects and will most likely be keeping up with this series. She got me intrigued with the cliffhanger ending. Though I hope there’s content warnings as it could be triggering for some readers.
I wasn’t sure whether I’d enjoy this book as much as I did, but delightfully, it was a page turner. It is also an unusual story, with Angie Nell exploring polyamory in the wilds of Montana, which is told through various viewpoints. Nell takes her time setting the scene and I appreciated how she gently eases the reader into the world of her protagonist, Emma, who finds herself homeless after her boyfriend ends their relationship but simultaneously learns that she has inherited her family business—Dark Mountain Ranch. Nell’s protagonist is a credible character, vulnerable yet determined, and I rooted for her from the start. I enjoyed immersing myself in those warm Montana mornings with coffee on the porch, especially while reading this story in the depths of a cold, wet London winter, though I would have liked more description of the environs. The polyamorous relationship between Emma and the three ranchers—Mason, Owen and Walker—is explored sensitively. Again, Nell takes her time allowing the reader to get to know the characters and their motivations, and amidst all the steam, she manages to avoid any fluff and sleaze. The writing is engaging throughout and I’m pleased to see there is a sequel to the story, which I’m looking forward to reading.
Dark Mountain Ranch: A Steamy Why Choose Western Romance by Angie Nel knows the job it set out to do and performs it well. The book is sweetly written, despite its steaminess, and has enough momentum to keep you turning the pages. The characters are as fully realized as one might reasonably expect with a single female protagonist and three male love interests contained within roughly 300 pages. Each feels distinct, and their dynamics are engaging, which helps sustain interest across the book.
The book might have benefited from deeper attention to character backstory, particularly for the heroine. Several characters are described as carrying past “trauma,” but these references remain vague, leaving the emotional stakes less grounded than they might otherwise be. The prose also leans at times on overextended metaphors when a lighter touch would suffice; the writing is strongest when it allows the crisp dialogue and clean action beats to do the work.
Still, taken as a whole, Dark Mountain Ranch delivers on its promises. It’s an enjoyable, well-paced read that understands its genre and audience. I’m glad I picked it up.
Why choose + cowboys + found family = instant obsession
Dark Mountain Ranch completely consumed me. I’m a vibes reader through and through, and this book had me locked in from the first page I finished it in under 24 hours and did not want to leave this world.
Emma returns to her Montana ranch broken, carrying betrayal, grief, and a past that still aches. What she finds instead are three rugged ranchers who don’t try to “fix” her, but stand beside her while she does the hard work herself. And that? Chef’s kiss.
Walker is the steady, grounding presence you lean on without realizing it. Mason is all warmth, charm, and heart. And Owen… the silent, brooding protector who says little but delivers everything a certified book boyfriend and full on Zaddy energy.
The found family, the emotional healing, the slow-burn tension, and the open-door why-choose romance were perfectly balanced. This story is cozy, emotional, spicy, and deeply affirming without ever taking Emma’s agency away from her.
I was fully immersed and already counting down until the next book. If you love small-town western romance, protective cowboys, and women finding their strength again READ THIS
I read Dark Mountain Ranch and I enjoyed it. I liked the Montana ranch setting and the rebuild storyline. I appreciated that Emma feels wounded but still capable, and I liked watching her take control of the ranch instead of being rescued. I liked how the three men feel different from each other. Walker feels steady, Owen feels protective, and Mason feels warm and patient. I appreciated that the story takes time to build trust and tension before the open door scenes start. I liked the mix of romance and plot. The developer threat adds momentum, and the ranch work gives the book a grounded pace. I also enjoyed the community and found family vibe around Emma as she settles back into that world. A few emotional beats felt a little broad. Some references to past pain stay vague, and I wanted a bit more detail to make the stakes hit harder. Still, the story stays easy to follow and the chapters kept me turning pages. I finished it satisfied and I would continue the series.
Dark Mountain Ranch by Angie Nel was such an enjoyable read, and I was lucky enough to read it as an ARC reader. The characters are incredibly redeeming together, and the dynamic between Emma, Owen, Walker, and Mason is what truly makes this story shine. Each of the men brings something different to the table, and together they feel absolutely perfect for Emma. Watching their relationship slowly blossom was fun, heartfelt, and emotionally satisfying.
Angie Nel does a great job building both the connection and the tension, keeping me fully invested in their journey. And that ending… wow. Book one ends on a major cliffhanger, and I’m already counting down until book two to see what happens next.
This book is a gripping and atmospheric read that blends suspense with emotional depth. The setting feels vivid and immersive, adding to the tension that builds steadily throughout the story.
The characters are well-developed, though a few could have used a bit more depth. Overall, it’s an engaging and satisfying read with just enough twists to keep you hooked definitely worth 4 stars. 🌟
I don’t usually have high standards for my first read of a new author but I was highly impressed. This was very well written with characters I felt connected to and didn’t rush into the spice of the story. Well balanced, well written, and I’ll definitely be reading more.
they didn't jump in ,the took their time. heartwarming, loving, spicy and I dont know. if someone who likes this genre doesn't give it a try they dont know what they are missing
I received this as an ARC and let me just say the plot was great and the whole book is wonderful. The spice is 🌶️🌶️🌶️ and who doesn’t love a why choose trope.
I loved this book—it was such an easy, enjoyable read that I flew through it. The characters were well developed, and the story flowed beautifully. I can’t wait for the second one
