Through a cruel slip of genetics, Aen and Rillen are destined to spend their lives in service to their government as living engine parts, until an opportunity presents them with a dangerous alternative. A foul-mouthed alien scientist and an unhinged engineer have retrofitted a tugship to interface with a stolen stardrive, but they need a navigation pair to use it.
In exchange for their freedom, Aen and Rillen agree to use their skills to search the underverse for the captain’s son, lost during a controversial wormhole experiment. With a bounty on their heads and the tugship falling apart at the seams, they hop from one sketchy planet to another, barely staying ahead of the powers bent on eliminating them.
