Thornton's Christmas Clause: A North & South Christmas Novella

Rate this book
What if the remedy to every heartbreak at Marlborough Mills… was the woman John Thornton never stopped loving? When Mr. Bell dies unexpectedly, Margaret Hale inherits more than his estate, she inherits a legal complication she never anticipated. Summoned to a business meeting just days before Christmas, she is prepared for contracts, signatures, and uncomfortable formalities.
What she is not prepared for is John Thornton.

Once the proud master of Marlborough Mills, Thornton arrives in London carrying a failing business, a lifetime of duty, and a secret keepsake he has treasured for months. He expects nothing but loss—of his mill, his pride, and any final connection to the woman he has never forgotten.

But when a hidden clause in Mr. Bell’s will forces them into a private consultation, old misunderstandings resurface, truths emerge, and Margaret begins to see exactly how much Thornton has sacrificed for others… and for her.

As snow falls over London, Margaret uncovers a discovery that could save the mill, protect the workers of Milton, and bind her future irrevocably with John’s. Yet taking that step requires one thing she has never dared to riskher heart.

Can love mend what pride once shattered?
And will this Christmas bring healing… or heartbreak?

A heart-stirring Christmas novella inspired by North and South—perfect for readers of Pride & Prejudice variations, Victorian romance, and tender second-chance love, this novella delivers everything you love about Elizabeth Gaskell—with the warmth, longing, and triumph of a classic holiday romance.

Beautiful and sweet

I love it when Alix James writes North and South stories! The way she writes John and Margaret is a wonderful mix of longing and a desire to do what’s right or best for the other person. And just the right amount of swoony! More, please :)

Alix James breathes life into a wonderful tale of sacrifice, duty and enduring love. John and Margaret have been separated, for months, by numerous misunderstandings and moments of pride and obligation which left too many things unsaid between them.
During the Christmas week, following the death of Mr Bell, John and Margaret are summoned to London to discuss the Clauses of his Will.
The decisions they will have to make, together, will impact their lives and the lives of hundreds of people who depend on the survival of Marlborough Mills.
Alix James masterfully crafts scenarios which place us directly into the story and we are swept up by every emotion and every heart wrenching moment as we wonder if John and Margaret will finally find their way to each other.
This tale will leave you breathless. It is a great Christmas read.

It is a very short novel, but one that is full of emotion. While Thornton struggles to keep the factory afloat, Margaret feels lonely even though she is with her family in London.
The idea that the late Mr. Bell has left her his inheritance, and with it Marlborough Mills, puts Margaret in a difficult situation, as she does not want to make any rash decisions, even though Thornton recommends that the best thing to do is to sell and that she disassociate herself from it. But this is where Margaret's qualities, which Thornton has long admired, come into play, as well as the effect that living in Milton and getting to know its people had on her, and knowing how important Marlborough Mills is to them and to Thornton.
Although it is a short novel, I really enjoyed reading about the longing that still exists between them, and I feel it has a great touch as it takes place during the Christmas celebrations. It is a very sweet story full of hope.

Beautiful story

There are not enough stories written that continue Gaskell’s story about Margaret and John. This is a must read if you loved Gaskell’s original work.
