Da Vinci’s Masterstroke

Rate this book
When the guns fell silent in 1945, one man uncovered a secret the world was never meant to see.

Special Officer Max Page-Hamilton – art historian, British officer, and one of the famed Monuments Men – stumbled upon Reichsmarschall Hermann Göring’s looted treasure trove in the final days of the war. Hidden behind the stolen Mona Lisa lay a sealed envelope bearing Göring’s personal wax seal… and inside it, a revelation capable of shaking the foundations of art history. Papers penned by Leonardo da Vinci himself, words so explosive that Max locked them away, swearing never to unleash their consequences on a fragile postwar world.

Decades later, his granddaughter inherits not only his legacy, but the burden of truth he dared not reveal.
Now, as global tensions simmer and the art world stands at a precipice, she steps into the spotlight he avoided. What Leonardo wrote in the 16th century was no ordinary treatise – It was a masterstroke of genius, a confession, and a key. A secret capable of re-drawing the line between myth and history, power and obsession, beauty and deceit.

From the salons of occupied Paris to the shadowy corridors of the contemporary art market, Da Vinci’s Masterstroke weaves together wartime intrigue, artistic passion, and a mystery that transcends centuries. Rich with historical detail, driven by emotion, and brimming with suspense, Lorraine Amrani crafts a thriller for art lovers and truth seekers alike, a story where every masterpiece hides a motive, and every revelation comes at a price.

What if the world’s most celebrated painting was never the real story?

Open the envelope. Follow the clues. Discover the secret that could turn the art world upside down.

I would like to have enjoyed this book more. Since it was gifted to me, I feel obligated to give an honest review. The storyline is very compelling. However, the writing is subpar. I’m not sure a human editor read this book. There were so many glaring grammatical errors I.e. “the letter he had wrote”, misspelled words, incorrect words I.e. inclination instead of indication and amour instead of armor, that I had to reread many sections to make sense of them. The dialogue was stilted and the verbiage distracting rather than clarifying. The story has great potential and I did not expect the ending at all. I hope someone might clean up the writing for future editions.

Three and a half stars

I truly enjoy historical fiction, which is the opening of the story. This book's plot moved between past and present.
There is a lot going on with many subplots and allegories.
I found the basic premise intriguing and it requires suspending disbelief to follow.
There are many historical references sprinkled through out the book to inspire you to follow up on.
In the end, for me, there were too many characters to keep track of and too many plot lines to follow. I couldn't fully invest in any of them. Not even the female protagonist completely captured my attention.
The final events leading to the conclusion were not as gripping as one would hope.
My overall review of the book is 3.5 stars. The book is not terrible but could have been so much better. And it needed much stronger editing. It is rife with typos and other errors.

I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for a fair and unbiased review.

This book spanned many years of the history of the Mona Lisa, beginning with Himmler's theft of the painting during the Nazi occupation of France. This story is tethered to the secret letter that DaVinci hides behind the painting. The contents of the letter is the main theme that surrounds the journey through time to the present day. The main character, an art curator must make life changing decisions regarding the contents of the letter. I believe this character was one of the best parts of the novel as she had more depth and personality that was flushed out and relatable.
This was a very interesting novel which I enjoyed. I think a tighter time line may have assisted in the flow of the story.
