As a fan of this series, I was delighted to receive an advance reader copy of this book to review. It has been a long while since I read the third installment, so my memory was a little hazy on some of the earlier landmarks in the plot as I began reading Gatekeeper's Crucible. However, I had no trouble at all resuming the journey, as the author provides sufficient details to unobtrusively remind readers of the context.

As I've come to expect from the earlier titles in The Gatekeeper series, the author sets a high standard for her writing and meets it again in this fourth book. Her style is engaging and flows easily. I often read passages a second time just to relish her prose, as she renders her settings and action with many subtle details that feed the senses and bring the scenes to life for the reader. I admire how the author has developed the main protagonist and her diverse ensemble of companions. Each one has emotional depth, with flaws and inner turmoil that challenge them, and the author's skill in portraying their body language is also very effective; it all provides insight so that they become like real people to me. One aspect of the author's work that I particularly appreciate as I read her stories is her "ear" for dialogue. Each individual's voice perfectly mirrors the character's personality and is distinctive in the group conversations.

In this next-to-last part of the series, the author rewards her readers with answers to many long-simmering, intriguing questions about Kyer's origins, and also slipped in some unexpected revelations about other characters that had me remarking out loud in surprise! I found the story a bit more dialogue-driven compared to previous installments, but the cascade of shocking discoveries and clever twists kept me turning the pages briskly. Any readers who love a story with dragons will be delighted with Greok's appearance. I was completely captivated by the scene describing the dragon's thoughts, movement and flight - simply breathtaking!

As I turned the last page of the final chapter, I hadn't yet realized I was so near the finish and was eager to learn what was going to happen next. I exclaimed in surprise to see that I was at the end, but have to say I am honestly satisfied at where the author has placed the intermission. I look forward to finding out how Kyer and her friends will handle the challenges they are facing, when the final installment of this series is released. Anticipation is part of the fun!

An excellent read that takes you on an epic adventure full of twists, turns, and interesting characters that you really get to know. The author’s attention to world building makes the read ever more immersive and entertaining. If you have not read the other books in the Gatekeeper series, they are a must read as well. I cannot wait for the next instalment!

I am a big fan of the Fantasy genre, and especially have loved the Gatekeeper's series. I thoroughly enjoyed the first three books in the series, and was thrilled to receive an Advanced Reader Copy of book 4. The Gatekeeper's Crucible does not disappoint!!! Returning to the series was like visiting old friends. With each adventure I feel a better understanding of each of the characters and like the way they are growing and developing. Wallace tells a great story and included just enough references to the earlier novels to jog my memory. Right away, we jumped into action with new adventures and mysteries! Book 4 is action packed, descriptive, and very easy to read. I burned through it, excited to see how the story would end. Apparently I have to wait!!! I am so excited for the final book of the series and truly hope the wait is short!!!

Gatekeepers Crucible by Krista Wallace is the fourth volume in the series and picks up Kyer and the others as they struggle with new developments that could change ‘everything’. I don't want to give the story away but suffice to say I was wrapped up in the it the whole time.

Even though this is the fourth in the series, Krista is careful to bring new readers and those of us with short memories gently up to speed. She explains past history only when needed and not so much that it interrupts the flow.

The characters are human and well developed. Flaws and strengths and dreams and everything that makes you care about them. Kyer has not lost her ruthlessness even as she continues to unravel the mystery of who she really is and where she comes from.

This should be a must read for everyone.

I usually read non-fiction, but I occasionally dabble in historical fiction. When a friend recommended Krista Wallace’s book, I hesitated because it was in the fantasy genre. However, I’m so glad I gave it a try—I thoroughly enjoyed it!

I was captivated by her vivid imagination and the world she created. The various plots kept me engaged, with a nice balance of predictable and surprising twists. I became emotionally invested in the characters and eagerly anticipated what would happen next.

I know this is Book Four of the series, so I’ll definitely go back and start with Book One. But I also found it enjoyable enough to stand alone.

Overall, this is a well-written book by a talented author. I highly recommend it to friends.

I received a review copy of the book and was very pleased to have a chance to read it beforehand rather than waiting any longer! This series transported me to an amazing world - one that I have impatiently anticipated, waiting for the release of each of the books. The detailed landscapes of forests, mountains and villages and the many characters make the story come alive with a picture of each’scene’ playing vividly in my mind as I read. Each character - Cymrion, dwarf, wood elf, Lord, dark elf, is a fully formed being - to root for, to greatly dislike or to feel uncertain about. Getting to know the primary characters has been so very entertaining and at times infuriating with how awful some are. This book ends at a perfect spot - I can hardly wait for book 5.

Full disclosure: I'm voluntarily reviewing a complimentary copy of this book, and I am a fan. I have enjoyed Krista Wallace's writing (and reading) for many years. I read the "Gatekeeper's" books and was happy with the first three. This latest installment continues the story from the previous books without getting bogged down in repeated minutia. It is expected that a reader knows what already happened. That leaves more room for new story and added nuance for what came before. More than once while reading this, I gasped at some reveal or twist I hadn't expected. The story moved well, and I appreciated the character development. This is a solid story. Oftentimes one sees a main storyline with side quests that continue to bring the characters closer to completing the main, but the side quests here seem to sometimes be in opposition to the main, creating inner conflict as Kyer is forced to choose. It gives more depth to the characters and to the rich world Wallace has created. "Gatekeeper's Crucible" is a sumptuous meal that makes it difficult to stop eating. The end definitely leaves the reader hanging, practically salivating for more. I can't wait for the next one. Although at the time of this writing the audiobook isn't released, I would recommend it and all her other readings. Wallace is an actor and singer, and she knows how to read a book for an audience. C'mon, Krista, give us Book 5! I'm drooling here!

This is the fourth instalment of the ‘Gatekeeper’ series and it didn’t disappoint. As with books two and three, the story picks up where the previous book ended. We follow the next part of Kyer Halidan’s story and learn more about her, not to mention the others who make up Valrayker’s Company.

Despite this being the fourth book in the series, there are still plenty of “new” things: new characters, new skills, new talents, new places, new twists. All may not be what it seems. We find out the meaning behind ‘Gatekeeper’ in the title.

As an avid reader of this type of fantasy fiction, there can be times when a new series feels much like others I have read. However, Krista Wallace has found her own little niche within the genre. Yes there are elves, dwarves, halflings, magicians, & knights with their usual traits, but there are other traits that are unique to this world.

This is the penultimate book in the series, so it ends on a cliff hanger, but what a cliff hanger – so many threads and so many ways the story could go. I’m looking forward to the final instalment to find out what happens!

It feels like I have been waiting FOREVER for the fourth book in Wallace's Gatekeeper series to come out and honestly, it was totally worth the wait. As a loyal fan of the series, I received an advanced reading copy to review , and I am so glad I did. Just like the characters in this story, the writing has matured - like fine Elvish wine - it absolutely draws you into this epic tale. Book 4 is full of unexpected twists and turns, but Wallace also does a great job of reintroducing us to the characters we have grown to know, and mostly love, from the first 3 books. I would say the biggest drawback to this story is the cliffhanger ending that will leave you shocked, but wanting more. Thankfully, I hear that the wait for book 5 will be much shorter.

I received this book from the author because am her editor. But never mind that because this book made me an instant Gatekeepers series fan. Seriously, the moment I handed back the edited manuscript, I went and got all the other books in the series. This is not something I typically do. But the world-building is incredible, and the characters are so charismatic. I do feel some characters should be eaten by dragons, but that’s great villain crafting, right? Anyway, the pacing of the storytelling is bang on, and I consider myself blessed to also be assigned to Book Five in the series BECAUSE REASONS!!!

No spoilers in this review. I have read the first three books in this series and was lucky enough to get an advanced version of book four in the 5 book series. This book truly takes the series to the next level. Things are moving, more questions are posed, others are answered and the stakes are raised significantly. We pick up right where we left off in book three and it is "go time" from the start. I am desperate to tell you all about what happens but I will not put in spoilers but, the ending of this book!! OMG Krista! I can’t believe you did that! Ack! How long do I have to wait for book 5!!??

This is the fourth volume of a five-book series. It is best to have read the previous volumes to gain a smooth immersion into the story. The writing is accomplished and inventive, the characterisation appealing, and the tension high. It portends well for the final volume, due mid-June 2026.
