The truth is out. The ice is cracking. And this time, we’re playing with everything on the line.
I used to think Luke King was my biggest enemy—now he’s the only one I trust to stand beside me. We’ve fought through lies, betrayals, and a town that thrives on secrets. But some storms don’t pass quietly.
The truth we uncovered didn’t just shake Blackwood—it detonated it. And now the fallout is coming for both of us.
His family. My past. The people pulling strings from the shadows. They’ll do whatever it takes to tear us apart.
But we’re not just fighting to endure—we’re fighting for each other.
Our love was never supposed to survive this place. But it did. And now? It might be the only thing strong enough to save us.
The ice beneath us is thin. One wrong move, and everything we’ve built shatters. But we’ve come too far—and fallen too hard—to let go now.
It’s us against Blackwood. And this time, we’re playing for keeps.
SuddenDeathis a steamy, high-stakes, second-chance hockey romance packed with explosive secrets, slow-burn redemption, and a finale that pulls no punches. Set in an elite academy where reputations are weapons and love breaks all the rules, this gripping installment marks the battle for survival at Blackwood—before everything changes.
Sudden Death is Book 3 in the Blackwood Blades series and this story picks up where book 2 left off. I highly recommend reading this series in order as from the beginning the story starts to unfold and continues its layers of tension, betrayal, drama and secrets but I love that the story of Luke and Mila continues to build on trust and love a piece at a time.
The stakes are high and secrets are revealed as Luke and Mila navigate who is responsible for murder and plenty of cover ups with everything to lose. Intensity is high.....but will Luke and Mila be able to stand together to take down very powerful people.....
I love the second chance between Luke and Mila in this series. This is a great series and I love every book this author has.
Sudden Death — aka: Second‑chance hockey romance where trauma, obsession, and bad decisions lace up their skates and ruin you.
This book is dark, messy, emotional, and exactly the kind of second‑chance chaos that makes you want to throw the Kindle and then pick it right back up. Isla Vaughn does not ease you in — she drops you straight into a storm of unresolved trauma, old wounds, and a hockey player who has been rotting from the inside out since the day he lost her.
And let’s talk about him for a second.
He’s the kind of broken, broody, self‑destructive athlete who thinks he can outrun his past by skating harder and hitting people. Spoiler: he cannot. The man is one bad night away from imploding, and the only person who ever steadied him is the girl he pushed away.
Enter the heroine — older, wiser, scarred in her own ways, and absolutely not here for his emotional whiplash. Their reunion is not soft. It’s not sweet. It’s two wounded animals circling each other, trying to decide whether to kiss or bite.
The chemistry? Unhinged. The tension? Thick enough to cut with a skate blade. The emotional damage? Premium grade.
What makes this book hit is the way their past bleeds into every interaction. It’s not just “we broke up.” It’s “we shattered each other, and now we’re pretending we can be normal.” And the hockey backdrop adds that perfect mix of aggression, adrenaline, and locker‑room vulnerability that dark sports romance thrives on.
You land at 4 stars because it’s addictive, angsty, and full of emotional teeth — but it’s also intense enough that you occasionally want to shake both characters and tell them to go to therapy. Still, the payoff is worth the chaos.
A gritty, high‑heat, second‑chance hockey romance where love isn’t the cure — it’s the thing that forces them to finally face the wreckage they’ve been avoiding.
The end is near and it’s time to show everyone that they were a united front. However as soon as Luke and Mila did, everyone spiraled and life became chaos. Sudden Death is the conclusion of their story. A story of heartbreak and healing and promises to never leave each other's side again. Just one problem Dunn is threatening them and their livelihood. With of course Elise leading the charge. The casualty if things don’t go right, Mila’s mom for starters and their relationship. Does Mila want to run at first? Sure but Luke’s not going to let her. He finally has her back. They are finally announcing to the world they are together. It’s time to stand a united front. With some help along the way. Help in the way of Edwardo. Bringing in an underworld presence will rock whatever Elise and her father plan to do next. It’ll keep their initial move of pinning Industrial Espionage on Mila’s mother. So what are the next steps? Secretly dig. Gather all the evidence they can to protect those they love most. All the while moving through life as if nothing is wrong and things will potentially crumble around them. With hockey and their tight knit friend group it helps keep things as normal as possible. Of course there's 1 problem at school Elise is a ticking time bomb and it’s just a matter of time before she slips up in public and makes her moves known. By chance that’s exactly why they didn’t back down and came to school as a united front. Will they find everything they need? Will Mila’s mom take the fall, or will it blow up in Dunn's face? So much to be said about a series that caused so much hurt and pain for the characters along the way, this book demonstrates their strength. They’re willing to push back and go for what they truly want, no matter how it makes others feel around them. The author keeps you turning the page. Keeps you wanting more. Has the reader on edge for the climax. That makes it all the more worthwhile. One of my favorite authors and this book/series demonstrates why that is!
Sudden Death by Isla Vaughn is the third book in her Blackwood Blades series, and it was such an amazing read! This book focuses on dark, emotional, high-stakes hockey romance that really brought this entire series to an intense, satisfying conclusion. This story feels like everything has been building toward this story, the story of Luke and his love interest, Mila, having to face the honest truth, the secrets, and all of the people that are bound to tear them apart. The intensity and addictive nature of this book really pulled me in with the drama, secrets, and emotional tension. I believe that Isla really got the right balance of dark romance, second chance, and a competitive hockey world, which made this book and this series one of my favorites of the year. Luke’s character stood out because he was protective, complicated, and clearly carrying a lot below the surface. His relationship with Mila was overflowing with tension, past hurts, chemistry off the charts, and so many emotions that made this story pull at every heartstring and made it extra messy. Mila is no stranger to past trauma and a lot of emotional damage. Her roadmap to and with Luke made her a great character to learn. Mila is determined not to let her past traumas and secrets derail her relationship with Luke, and the two of them together are willing to walk the road together against everything and everyone else that stands in their way. The academy setting, hockey drama, and suspense not only kept the story moving but also made it for me. There were moments when it felt like I was swimming in emotions and steaming up my Kindle from all the dark romance. Once I started this book, I couldn’t stop until the last page. Overall, I really enjoyed this book. If you are looking for a dark romance read or have a love of hockey romances, second-chance tropes, and messy relationships, then this is one you really need to add to your TBR. Honestly, just add this whole series because each one has been amazing so far, and I can’t wait to see where Isla Vaughn takes it.
This is the 3rd and final book in the Blackwood Blades series. I do highly recommend reading these books in order as they follow on from each other and you need to read them from the beginning to understand why the characters are where they are in this book. It is a sports second chance romance but it is so much more than that. There is danger, secrets, lies, hidden agendas and a group of people who will stop at nothing to destroy Luke and Mila.
This is a story that has gripped me from the beginning from Mila disappearing and breaking Luke’s heart, to her returning and them keeping their relationship hidden to now. They are done hiding their relationship and have gone public which will cause a backlash bigger than either of them could have imagined. With their enemy’s circling is their relationship and love strong enough to face the war that is heading their way or will Mila leave again to protect Luke and herself from the danger they now face.
I honestly can’t recommend these books enough. This author is amazing at writing stories that grip you from the first page. The romance with the twist of danger makes this series one I would pick up again and this author is one I choose to read every time
Mila and Luke have finally decided to make their relationship public, to everyone. That includes Luke’s parents, his rival; Mr. Dunn who thinks that Mila is leverage because her mother is now working for him after working for the King Corporation as well, and Elise; Mr. Dunn’s daughter who wants to b take Mila down because she wants Luke as her boyfriend. Elise threatens Mila at the annual gala but she holds strong with Luke by her side, he has finally chosen her no matter what. However things continue to progress and not necessarily for the good. Luke could lose everything that he loves which is Mila and hockey, and his chance at going to Michigan which he feels right now is untouchable. Elise has realized that she is no longer in control and is losing it and it may be that she is trying to push for things to be brought into the public no matter how false the allegations are. Can Luke keep Mila safe and keep from losing everything else in the process? He now has help from some unexpected people but it may be that he loses his family in that process as well because his older brother may have to choose the business over him, but will he? Will Mila and Luke lose each other or everything they hold dear?
Sudden Death is the third and final book in The Blackwood Blades series by Isla Vaughn. It is an intense enemies to lovers/elite academy/secret relationship/hockey romance with darker elements, a dangerous game, passion, angsty drama, tension, suspense, secrets, chemistry, steam, risk, danger, intrigue, discoveries, high-stakes emotion, and so much more. The story concludes the intense journey we started back in book one - Mila and Luke have been through so much, and their story is tangled, complicated, and undeniably passionate. They have gone from enemies to having a secret understanding that they can’t afford for anyone to discover, to much more than either bargained for. The stakes are high. They are fighting for their love, and lives - so Ms. Vaughn doesn’t make things easy, she makes them fight for their love – pushing them to their breaking points – so what ensues made for edge-of-my-seat reading! I had high expectations …. And Ms. Vaughn delivered! If you love sports romance with dark edges, ruthless yet magnetic leads, and a storyline that keeps you flipping the pages late into the night, then this book/series will definitely deliver. Happy Reading…
Sudden Death is the next instalment in this series, and this picks up right after Cross-checked finished. A disclosure is you will need to read the first two books as they build up and gives you detailed information you require for this book.
Luke and Mila are now full in a relationship and when they are stronger than ever, having to wade through the secrets and lies which has been discovered all while trying to get back into the swing of life and school.
Once back in school, there is still the elite pressures but with Luke gaining strength from his friends within the hockey team and Mila finding comfort in her friend Avery, life can be a little less dark than it has been before. Although will they ever truly feel happy.
This story is well written like the others and is driven by the storyline and the characters within the story. As said at the beginning readers of the book who have not read the first two books may struggle with the emotional and things revealed in the book.
The story is well paced and has enough mystery and twists to hold your interest until the last word. I can’t wait to read more books by Isla in the future.
Another amazing installation to the hockey romance series! The stakes are getting higher, and the tension is getting thicker in this third book.
I loved Mila and Luke’s romance and was constantly on the edge of my seat every time they have to face another impending obstacle, but I absolutely adored the relationships between the friends. The chemistry and dynamic between Mila and Avery are perfection; they are true bffs. And even the friendship among the guys is heartwarming and very entertaining to read. I always enjoy those scenes the most.
There were a lot more light-hearted scenes in this book. It breaks up all of the harder tension and drama throughout, but it definitely did not limit the amount of high stakes Mila and Luke had to face.
Bonus part: I loved the epilogue chapter! It was a really nice conclusion and a phenomenal plot twist I did not see coming.
If you love sports romance, drama, second chances, secrets-betrayal-redemption arcs, and steamy dark entanglements, reading the Blackwood Blades series is a must!
Sudden Death wraps up The Blackwood Blades Series in a way that feels really satisfying.
The story picks up exactly where the last book left off, right after that huge cliffhanger. Luke and Mila decide to make their relationship public, but their enemies have other plans. These enemies will do whatever it takes to keep their secrets hidden, even if it means breaking Luke and Mila apart or worse.
Get ready for a wild ride full of twists, surprises, and danger. The secrets that powerful people have been hiding are finally coming out. At the same time, Luke and Mila’s love story really shines. Both characters have changed a lot since the first book, and I loved seeing them finally trust each other. Their strong bond makes their enemies underestimate them.
Even the epilogue had a few surprises that I found really interesting. Overall, it was a great ending to a fantastic series. I didn’t share too many details because I don’t want to spoil anything for other readers.
This is the final book in the Blackwood Blades series. If you haven't read the first two, you'll need to do that before you dive into the one. Again, I really like the premise of this book. I love the intrigue, mystery, devotion, hockey romance, but I still can't get past that the main characters are in high school, albeit seniors and getting ready to head off to college. But it still gives me the ick and I can't get past it. Not only because this is a romance book and I just can't, but also because I know that there's no way these 17-18 year old KIDS are making the decisions they are making in this book. Now, before you come for me, yes, I am well aware this is a work of fiction...however, when you've dealt with kids this age for as long as I have...you know damn well their frontal lobe isn't developed enough to make mature decisions ;) Vaughn is an auto-purchase author for me and she rarely misses, but this is one of those series I just can't. But I'm excited to see what she puts out for us next!
This is definitely a series well worth the read and it will not disappoint. This story has taken me from the beginning to the end and one heck of a roller coaster ride and this book, left you looking for clues as to who is causing all this and why? Have to read for yourself to see how this one ends.
Sudden Death: A Dark Second Chance Hockey Romance (Blackwood Blades) by Isla Vaughn. I love this author so much and I have loved this series. This is the 3rd and final book in the A Dark Second Chance Hockey Romance Series and its wonderful. Its the continuing story of Luke and Mila and it picks up where the 2nd book left. off. I do recommend reading them in order to better understand the story line and characters. In this addition Mila and Luke are done hiding their relationship. After Mila went missing and broke Luke's heart to them trying to hide their relationship they aren't going to let anyone get between them now. They are back in school and Luke is getting stronger everyday with his hockey team and Mila is hanging with Avery and all is right or is it? After they have been thru all the lies, mysteries and heartache will they really be able to stay together? The surprise Epilogue was a real bonus! It had a wild ending which I loved! Will continue reading anything this author writes!
This story is by an author that I never hesitate to pick up. I have enjoyed reading their books from the first one I picked up. One of the things I enjoy about this author is the creative characters that are written with heart and soul. I also enjoy their use of details. The details make me feel as if I am part of the story. This is a hockey romance story that has some spice as well as being a second chance story. A story where love was built but one wrong move could shatter everything. This is a story you don’t want to miss. The characters are strong, connectable and well developed. What they add to the story makes it easy and entertaining to read. I enjoyed watching their growth throughout the story. This is a fast paced, hard to put down story that I enjoyed reading from beginning to end. I look forward to seeing what is next for this author. I highly recommend this story.
This is the second part of Mila and Luke’s story. These two have already been ripped apart once, and that fact continues their story. Mila and Luke continue to piece together Darren’s death, and they must also keep Elise Dunn from destroying their relationship, which is made public in this book. That adds a whole new layer of complications for Mila and Luke. These two are crazy in love with a strong bond. With college and Michigan only a few months away, Luke’s crew is ready to start fresh in a new town, a new school, on a new hockey team, and away from Blackwood’s past. This event is the fresh start Luke and Mila really deserve. This is the third book in the series, and it ties everything together nicely; it answers many of the questions Luke and Mila have been trying to get answers to. There is not a book by this author that I have not finished in one sitting! Great plots, characters, steamy scenes, and, overall, an amazing author! A must-add to your TBR list!!
Sudden Death: A Dark Second Chance Hockey Romance (Blackwood Blades) by Isla Vaughn. 4 of 5 Stars. This is the conclusion of Luke and Mila’s second chance romance and therefore the books need to be read in order. This dark hockey romance has kept me hooked from book one, and I now feel invested in Luke and Mila’s relationship. Luke has gone from being Mila’s biggest enemy to being the man she can trust by her side. However, the truth they uncovered shook Blackwood and now they must face the fallout. The people pulling the strings from the shadows want to tear Luke and Mila apart. But they are willing to fight for one another, and for their love which was never supposed to survive Blackwood. Luke and Mila’s chemistry remains as steamy as ever in this third book in the series. This high-stakes finale kept me gripped as secrets were revealed, lies found out, and betrayals discovered. I loved the epilogue and that it ended on a plot twist!
5 Stars Sudden Death: A Dark Second Chance Hockey Romance (Blackwood Blades Book 3) By Isla Vaughn
Sudden Death is a Dark Second Chance Hockey Romance that is the third book in the Blackwood Blades Series. This story is packed with drama, secrets, second chances, slow burn redemption and so much more. There’s the perfect amount of steam and chemistry to keep you turning the pages till the end. The characters are creative, relatable, fully developed and make the story come to life. This has been building since the first book which I recommend reading this series in order if you haven’t already started them. These two have been through a lot together and have been tested. One Wrong move could destroy everything. This is a fast paced story that you don’t want to miss. I highly recommend reading this book to find out what happens next. I can’t wait to read more from this Author.
Sudden Death: A Dark Second Chance Hockey Romance (Blackwood Blades Book 3)
Everything gets wrapped up all nice and pretty in this third book, but the path there was anything but pleasant.
Mila and Luke finally are able to have their relationship out in the open, and it wasn't well received by everyone.
These kids are trying to make sense of events from the past and kicking up a lot of dust in the process. But they get answers to a lot of questions and are able to live their lives.
It took some time by they get their happy ending and start new in college. Which still makes me shake my head because they go through a lot of stuff before they graduate high school.
I have read most of if not all of Ms. Vaughn's books and will continue to keep her on my list of authors to read no matter what.
This is book 3 and you definitely need to read this series in order to know what is going on. This book is the conclusion to Luke and Mila’s love story. A lot happens in the series which will keep the reader on the edge of his / her seat. The books are long but it’s all needed to get the feel of how serious everything is. These two have such a strong bond with eachother that even when they want to hate eachother, the can’t. Will these main characters be able to make it to the end with this bond or will they lose everything they have tried to protect? Definitely a good new series by this author. It wasn’t my favorite from her but was a close second. If you haven’t gotten a chance to read this as of yet, hopefully you will grab book 1 and get started soon. Cannot wait for more from this author.
So this is book three in the series. I will preface this to say I enjoy the author but this series got old fast. I was thrilled with the new series at first. Wonderful new characters and more rich kid high school problems. But in this one the continued evasive wording quickly got old. Secrets finally come to fruition and answers are seen! I really loved the characters in this one. There is quite a collection of different players with many different agendas and emotions. Many times it is easy to forget many of these are high schoolers as they speak and act so mature. I am glad to finally got all the answers to my questions. This is not my favorite in the series but it is necessary to finish.
With high school graduation in sight everyone needs to keep their noses clean and stay focused on the prize…graduation, right? Not the unraveling of family secrets, not the business’ dirty dealings, and not the other secrets being kept in Blackwood.
I love how Mila and Luke’s love has stayed strong throughout this series. Of course, they had their moments of questioning if the other was all in. But each seems to love the other no matter what happens. As long as they are together, they will survive what Blackwood throws at them.
This book wraps up the mystery and then throws a slight curve at the last minute that makes me go hmmmm.
I enjoyed this book as well as the first two in the series. Definitely needs to be read in order.
Sudden Death is the third book in the Blackwood Blades series. It is a dark second chance hockey romance that blends danger, emotional turmoil, and high stakes secrets. Its main themes revolve around betrayal, trauma, redemption, and the fight for truth. The storyline follows Mila and Luke as they confront powerful enemies, expose long buried corruption, and try to protect their relationship while chaos closes in around them. Mila is determined, resilient, and shaped by a painful past, while Luke is broody, fiercely protective, and struggling to overcome deep emotional wounds. Together they form an intense, volatile, and ultimately compelling pair whose growth and loyalty drive the final installment’s tension and payoff.
Picking up right where the previous book left off, this is the final installment of the Blackwood Blades series, bringing Luke and Mila’s high-stakes, second-chance hockey romance to an intense and deeply satisfying conclusion. As the couple finally goes public and presents a united front, they trigger a chaotic backlash from enemies who spin a dangerous web of lies, secrets, and cover-ups to tear them apart. Isla Vaughn masterfully balances a dark, suspenseful academy setting with an emotional sports romance, pushing her complex characters to their absolute breaking points to test their strength and evolving trust. This addictive, page-turning finale expertly delivers heartbreak, healing, and undeniable chemistry, making it a fantastic ending to this series.
Luke and Mila have been through a lot. There were many times when their relationship should have ended but they endured. It's the two of them against the whole town of Blackwood. How will they fair? This book is a quick read when you don't have a million things going on. I have several books by this author and I don't hesitate to pick up anything by her that I haven't read yet. The consistency of the storyline and characters made it so that you could go seamlessly from one book to the next. If you are a fan of hockey, second chances, and a little bit of spice this series needs to be added to your library like, yesterday.
This is definitely not a stand alone, you need to read the first 2 books as they build on each other. While attempting to uncover secrets and deceptions of the past Mila and Luke are navigating the halls of Blackwood High School. Mila and Luke finally put their relationship out in the open and it's not accepted by quite a few people surrounding them. With college only a few short months away, these two kids have dreams of a wonderful future outside the confines of the King and Dunn corporation issues. This really ties everything in together nicely and once again Isla has done a phenomenal job of building a great plot, characters, emotion and suspense.
This book is a brilliant addition to an already strong series. I would highly recommend reading these books in order so you get full enjoyment of the series. I loved getting back into these characters to learn what is next for them. I have enjoyed their journey so far and was excited to get to know them even more. The story is as good as the previous books. I was pulled in from the first page and could not stop reading. I felt like I was experiencing everything with these characters and just wanted to know more. Everything this author writes is such a hit and this series is no exception. I would definitely recommend you reading these.
Sudden Death is the conclusion of Luke & Mila’s second chance sports romance and the third book of Isla Vaughn that I have read. I enjoyed all three of these and recommend reading them in order so you understand the plot and what all is happening. Stakes are high as Luke and Mila and friends navigate the corporate and personal relationships of their town. Who was murdered and who covered it up? And why? How did it affect Mila and her mom? Who made them come back? Is Luke strong enough to choose Mila over everything else or is he playing her? I also enjoyed the background character of Avery and Jax.
Isla Vaughn delivers absolute perfection with Sudden Death. This book had everything I love in a dark hockey romance, explosive secrets, intense chemistry, emotional redemption, and edge-of-your-seat tension from beginning to end. Luke and his heroine’s relationship is beautifully messy, passionate, and impossible not to root for. The Blackwood atmosphere is addictive, full of danger, betrayal, and high-stakes drama that keeps the pages flying. Vaughn masterfully balances steam, suspense, and heartfelt emotion, delivering a finale that completely wrecked me in the best way possible. An unforgettable 5-star read for romance lovers who crave angst, secrets, and fierce second chances.
And just like that , we finally have all the answers! I don’t know about you but me I have been painfully dying in silence waiting for the conclusion of this series. And the wait was worth it .
*Please note that this is book 3 in the Blackwood Blade series and is definitely not intended to be a standalone.
If you love unhinged trauma dumping and obsessed hockey MMC then girl this is the one ! And lucky for all three books are out! So do you and Isla a favor and go get all three today, you won’t be disappointed 😉
If you are reading this first, stop immediately and go back and read the first two books. This third book is definitely not a standalone. This book is the conclusion to the series and it sure ended with a bang. Luke and Mila have gone through a lot. They try and navigate a murder and try to figure out whats going on. The angst in this book is so cringy that made me wince a little. But I really like how everything was wrapped up and concluded. I still had a few questions, but only clarifying ones that a reread can't hurt. Isla did a fantastic job with this series, and I loved it!
