Grym Hollow #5

The Fae's Promise

Rate this book
Evangeline has always dreamed of a life outside Grym Hollow, exploring a world of culinary magic and making her own. It’s what her parents would’ve wanted for her. But like the other women, leaving is only possible through The Guardian’s contract, which comes with its own rewards…and risks.

Like marrying two monarchs to save their courts from a curse that rots food right off the vine.

Hunger makes a desperate fool of anyone, but King Niko has never felt more confident taking a human bride alongside his other half. The fae are hardly conventional, and he wants to embrace her as the perfect addition to their bond. The one who will undoubtedly save his people from famine.

Zephyr, however, is as cold as the ice that flows through his veins. Scarred by a past that demonstrates just how dangerous shared mates can be, he’s determined to treat this as political duty—and nothing else.

As the darkness spreads, a precarious alliance will no longer be enough. But can they combine their love to heal their pasts, their kingdom, and their hearts?

Book five in the Grym Hollow series. Each book follows one couple and ends in a happily-ever-after. The books can be read in any order, but reading in numerical order is best.

3⭐️| my first arc read!!! ahhhh!!!!
The Fae’s Promise is the fifth book of the Grym Hollow series, following Evangeline and her goal to new adventures. each book in the series follows a different couple as well. thank you to the author for my eARC, i am so incredibly greatful!
𝘣𝘦𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘦-𝘦𝘹𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦
i volunteered to read this book without knowing it was the fifth in the series, but i still understood everything perfectly fine, so you can read it as a standalone if you’d like. i kind of went in blind (don’t ask) but thankfully i didn’t struggle!
𝘱𝘭𝘰𝘵
i can say i liked the plot of this book and it kept me entertained. i’ve been in a book slump after finishing the renegades (don’t even get me started, my babies nova and adrian💔) but i finished this surprisingly fast! it’s pretty fast paced and to the point, and the writing is easy to understand (though the writing style wasn’t particularly my favorite). but the whole nephillim issue and storyline kept me on my toes!
𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴
my favorite character of the book was def finnick. he was so funny and sassy, and honestly made up for everything else! i loved his commentary and he made me laugh lowkey
𝘦𝘷𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘦: i’m going to be completely honest, i didn’t really like her that much. she could’ve been worse, but she kind of made me mad in some scenes. but she was also funny and sweet and i liked that detail of her being a chef!
𝘕𝘪𝘬𝘰: ehhhhhhhhhh idk how to feel abt him he’s okay
𝘡𝘦𝘱𝘩𝘺𝘳: he made me mad. sorry ahem
i liked the other characters but they were kind of forgettable and i can’t remember any of the top of my head rn.
𝘳𝘰𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦
i think ive learnt that reverse harem (or why choose) isn’t my cup of tea, but i didn’t know that before i picked up this book (which if, of course, my fault but wtv). uhm i preferred the plot over the romance, but this book was more romance-based obviously so there’s that. i didn’t really like the love interests that much, i liked them as characters better. but i think if you like why choose romances you would like this!
(𝘣𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘺, 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘣𝘰𝘰𝘬 𝘪𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘤𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘪𝘵 𝘩𝘢𝘴 𝘴𝘱𝘪𝘤𝘦, 𝘴𝘰 𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘪𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘥𝘪𝘴𝘭𝘪𝘬𝘦 𝘴𝘱𝘪𝘤𝘦!!)
𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘴
i like to be honest in my reviews so if you liked this book don’t take it personally lol!!
it wasn’t really my cup of tea, could have been worse but i don’t think ill continue the series. i think what affected my experience the most was that it had tropes or things that i didn’t really enjoy, so i think many others could enjoy this if they like those specific tropes! the storyline went straight to the point from the beginning (so the book isn’t drag on or anything) and despite all of my “dislikes” from it, i can say it was entretaining! i haven’t read a book in a while so i hope this has motivated me to read again
also this story gave me very big princess & the frog vibes, so if you’re a disney lover, you’d probably love this!

Culinary Magic and a Gentle Simmer That Never Boiled Over: An Atypical Why-Choose Romance
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐

I went into The Fae’s Promise by Tati B. Alvarez, intrigued by the idea of culinary magic healing a cursed fae kingdom, and I’ll say right away — that element truly shines. The cooking scenes were easily my favorite part of the book. Watching Evangeline pour her vulnerability into her meals, waiting anxiously for reactions, and feeling that bloom of pride when her food genuinely helps others felt authentic and heartfelt. The idea that something as simple as cooking could become powerful enough to combat a kingdom-wide famine is a beautiful concept.

Evangeline begins the book overwhelmed and reactive, which may not work for every reader, but I appreciated that the narrative doesn’t present her as instantly fearless. Instead, we see her grow. She chooses to leave home. She finds purpose cooking for her new royal family. She experiences intimacy on her own terms. Ultimately, she achieves agency by volunteering to confront danger herself, even quietly accepting she may have to sacrifice everything to save the kingdom. That progression from uncertainty to self-possession is thoughtfully done.

Where the story struggled for me was in emotional connection and pacing.

The romantic dynamic, in particular, felt different from what the blurb led me to expect. The summary frames the premise as marrying two monarchs to save their courts, which suggests a united why-choose romance from the beginning. However, on the page, one king is “vehemently against getting involved with another” and, at least outwardly, treats the arrangement strictly as a political duty. While that trope may work well for readers who enjoy reluctant-partner dynamics, it created an early, unexpected imbalance that made it difficult for me to emotionally invest in the trio.

Because of that slower, uneven romantic build, some of the later high-stakes moments didn’t land with the emotional weight I was hoping for. I found myself admiring individual elements: the glowing inner sanctum with its crystal veins, the living rootwood table etched with a map of the kingdom, and the themes of bravery and sacrifice, while still waiting for a deeper connection to take hold. By the end, the epilogue actually left me more excited to see what happens with The Guardian than I felt about this particular throuple.

Overall, this is a creative romantasy with a unique culinary hook and a heroine who genuinely grows into her power. While the premise and world-building are strong, the romantic execution and pacing kept it from fully igniting for me.

I received a complimentary copy and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

THE FAE'S PROMISE is the fifth book in the Grym Hollow series, and the first one that has a throuple!

Evangeline is the last resident of Grym Hollow to approach the Guardian. Her parents have both died, and she wants to see more of the world than she would by staying where she grew up. Signing the contract with the Guardian means she will see another world... literally!

Niko, an earth fae, is the one she will marry. He is also married to Zephyr, an ice fae, who is happy to accept a human into their lives but, for his own reasons, doesn't want to be tied to her as well. Having more than one partner is completely normal for the fae, although it comes as a shock to Evangeline.

The faes' kingdom is under attack by the Nephilim, the land cursed so no crops will grow, the food rots, and they are slowly starving to death. There is a way to break the curse, of course, and it involves Evangeline.

This was such a great read!!! Finnick is one of my favourite characters, the small sprite with the big personality. But honestly, there wasn't a character I didn't like - out of the good guys, that is. The overall story arc is moving along nicely, building up tension, and raising questions that I can't wait to have answered. The relationship between our main three builds nicely, too. Yes, it's fast, but that is almost expected by now. I loved how they grew together, even if Zephyr was reluctant! And can I just say, his reasons were heartbreaking.

Another fantastic book in this series. There is just one more to go, and I honestly can't wait for! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book, and the series so far. They are all brilliant.

Oh, and if the cover gives you Tiana vibes, just wait until you read the inside. One of my favourite Disney films certainly grew up!

** Same worded review will appear elsewhere. **

* A copy of this book was provided to me with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book; the comments here are my honest opinion. *

The Fae’s Promise is the fifth book of Grym Hollow series, a collection of interconnected fantasy romance standalones. While there is an overarching story arc, each book focuses on one couple (or throuple in this case) and contains a HEA for them. I received an advance review copy and my thoughts are my own. Thank you to the author for my eArc.

Tropes and themes include:

✨Lover in denial
✨Prior trauma
✨Found family
✨Chosen one
✨One bed
✨Forced proximity
✨Fated mates

The Lovely: I loved loved loved this. The relationship and its development is everything - it’s beautiful, tragic and full of love. In particular, there is one scene later in the book, that made me cry again (I previously alpha read this book). The MMCs each come to the relationship from a different background and viewpoint which created conflict and tension.

Also Lovely: The underlying story arc is heating up, and I loved how the FMC helped the Fae realm, both early on and towards the end. She plays to her own strengths, turning them into valuable skills.

Recommendation: I fell in absolute love with this story when I first read it so I’ve been chomping to get my hands on the final book. The author’s first why choose absolutely knocks it out of the park. If you love a why choose throuple in a story full of tension, angst, love and sacrifice, I think you would love this book.

The Fae's Promise is everything I hoped it would be and so much more. Before I say anything else I absolutely adore Finnick! He completely stole the show in the book and I firmly believe everyone needs a Finnick in their life. Now with that being said.
This is book 5 of the Grim Hallow series and you have Evangeline who heals and loves people with her cooking. Eva makes a deal with the Guardian for an arranged marriage not realizing her soon to be husband already has a husband, then the Guardian drops her off in the middle of complete chaos! What else could go wrong?
King Niko and King Zephyr are desperately trying to save the Fae kingdom and Niko has agreed to an arranged marriage with a human, King Zephyr on the other hand only wants Niko.
The dynamic between these three was beautifully heartbreaking. I love that there was no jealousy whatsoever. Niko and Eva fall into place beautifully with each other. Niko and Zephyr have a strong established relationship. But Zephyr and Eva's relationship was heartbreaking, and what made things worse was that Zephyr wouldn't even give Eva an explanation as to why. Once Zephyr got over himself and finally let Eva into his heart their relationship finally fell into place where it should have always been.
I love this series and cannot wait for the next book!

Thank you so so so much to the wonderful author for allowing me to read an ARC of this book !!!

“What do you mean husbands?”

“Something shifted today. I feel it deep in my bones … I fear this is just the beginning, but I refuse for this to be our undoing”

Damn but I love the Grym Hollow series !!! The more I read, the more obsessed I get. And this time around? Hotness me, I think I might have been in need of a MMF dynamic !!! Amazing. Sweet. Passionate. Intense. Strong. Complex. Beautiful. And I won’t go into heavy details because y’all deserve the chance to experience this book first hand and love it as much as I did. But come back here after you’ve read Evangeline, Niko and Zephyr’s story and I bet you’ll tell me I was right!! Do I have a fav? Absolutely I do. Will I say? Nope. Because the way the three of them love? It’s endless. It has no bounds. It has no secrets. It’s pure and complete. And I love it!!! And the spicy times were spicing (if you get my meaning) because after all … when there’s room for two, there’s also room for three between the fae !!!! I can’t wait for this book to be out and I can’t to restart the whole series and binge it, waiting for the next instalment !!!

This was a good book. It had nice pacing and kept me entertained. My favorite character from this one was Finnick. I love his personality. I'm looking forward to reading the next book. I saw the ending coming, and I want answers from the guardian. While each book in this series features a different couple, it has an overreaching plot, so I highly recommend reading them in order.

Evangeline has wanted to travel the world, so when the guardian gives her the chance, she takes it. She is to marry and move to a new world. Not only is she to marry, but it's to a man who is already married to another man. Things just got complicated. The guardian was supposed to bring her to her new husband, but instead he abandoned her in this new world in the middle of a battle. Turns out this world is at war, and she is their only hope of surviving.
Niko and Zephyr have been doing everything they can to win the war, but they are losing. Their only hope is one human girl. Niko is all in with her, but Zephyr is insistent on staying away from her emotionally. He's okay with Niko taking her as his second mate, but he vows to never be her mate. Can they save the kingdom? Will they get their happily ever after?

We start with evangeline, a woman who wanted more, to see and feel what the world has to offer. Something that I think most pf us can gravitate towards, it lets you give yourself over to the book to see what she faces when being with the Fae, and what could happen with or without her help.

We get the tale of a why choose plot between her and the fae kings, who graciously agreed to have her.

Although I havent read the first 4 books, being able to pick which one you want to read without and risk of spoilers of the world set in Mescos and the fate of the other lands.

We delve into the adventure of love, fear, sadness and peril, which grabbed me by the hooks and wanted me to discover the secrets that hid there.

Although I loved the book as a whole, I do feel like something was missing for me, though im unsure whether its because I have my read the stories of the other Queens in this series for the full view of Mescos and the trials they face.

But with Evangeline as the guide I feel like I have gotten everything I needed to laugh, cry and maybe shout at one or two of the stubborn characters we meet along the way.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Another story in the Grym Hollow series that I just ate up and enjoyed. This series is just one i know I'll enjoy and it be a quick read too.
I loved that this was a why choose, one of my favorite tropes. 🤭
Evangeline, Zephyr, and Niko were just fun and a bit intense at times.
The tension between Eva and Zephyr were so worth it in the end. 🥵 but so was the quick romance between her and Niko.
As well as the already relationship between Niko and Zephyr. The scene when she walks in the room not necessarily interrupting something...🥵🥵
But theres also another curse that needs to be broken and it's up to Evangeline to help do just that.
This was just a good action filled story.
I loved the characters, sweet little Finnick omg his character was so sweet and funny. 😅 he just cracked me up, but he's also such a loyal friend.

Don't get me started on the ending. 👀 ohhhh I'm even more intrigued for what could happen next.

This series can be read as a standalone, however you'll see characters from the other books as you do with each of the other books too.

Thank you Tati and flyingpigpr for the arc. 🫶🏻

I am very grateful to be an ARC reader from Tati. I love her Grym hollow series. I recommend the series as a whole for anyone wanting an intro to Romantasy. Tati writes and builds a fantasy world with ease and clarity.
The Fae’s Promise introduces Evangeline, Niko, and Zephyr. If you’re a fan of MFM, this is one to add. Evangeline wants to explore outside of her town, and she gets more than what she signed up for. Not one but husbands. Niko is the charming, sweet Fae King and tough on-the-outside Zephyr is his mate. What I loved most were her side characters in this book. Finnick is so easy to love, and Lady Thalia is the motherly figure I loved to see comfort Evangeline.
While I love this series as a whole, TFP was personally missing chemistry for me. While these books aren’t too lengthy, I felt the character development between all three was short. But it had to move fast because the entire plot of the series is coming to a head, and I can’t wait to see the where the next book takes us.

Unlike the previous books and queens, this one ... IDK what happened. The writing is there, Mescos continues to shine, I'm as excited about Ender's book as I always was, but Evangeline, Niko and Zephyr left me cold.

Not that it's the why choose aspect. I've read PLENTY why choose books. Of all three characters, Zephyr was the one I gravitated towards the most. Niko, I feel like couldn't decide if he was going to be a ruler or a flamboyant scoundrel, and Evangeline unfortunately didn't strike me well at all. I'm confused because Ender says everything she needed to know was in the contract, including the marriage and whatnot, but she first says she didn't even read it all, then that she read it but it was vague. So I feel this is an error in the whole plot.

Also, her panicky running around didn't appeal to me, and I feel her journey to queen was a bit rushed.

Still, I'm sticking through to the end! Pixies, here we come.

Only reason it took me so long to finish is cause a I’ve been dealing with some family emergency. So I had to take a break reading.

I was definitely excited to read this book, because this was her FIRST WHY CHOOSE book and I’m a girly who LOVES a good WHY CHOOSE BOOK.

Eva was a doll definitely loved her, such a big heart.

Love the men, right off the bat Niko was into her and not only cause he marry her to save the kingdom, the connection was strong between them.

Zephyr, I definitely understand why he didn’t want any to do with her, especially the with his family history, I wish there was more talk between him and Eva and I wish she just a little more pushier instead of giving him space lol.

The SPICE 🥵🥵🥵🥵🥵 was definitely good, loved every scene chefs kiss 😮‍💨🤌🏻 When walked in on them I was umm yesss here we go 😆

I’m definitely excited for the nexts books over all I’m super excited for the Guardian book I think since the first book I’ve been very interested in his story, and reading the epilogue has me more interested.!!!

This story was so good and had me going through all the emotions in the best way possible. It did take me a little while to get into it, but once I was hooked, I couldn’t put it down.

The story follows Evangeline, a human who has always wanted to leave Grym Hollow to pursue her culinary dreams. In order to do that, she makes a deal with the Guardian, which requires her to marry two Fae kings, Niko and Zephyr. They are willing to take on a human wife to help their starving kingdom. Well, Niko is willing, but Zephyr is very much against the idea for his own reasons.

All of the characters, including the side characters, added depth to the story without taking away from the plot. I cannot wait to go back and read the earlier books in this series.

This is marketed as being inspired by The Princess and the Frog and you definitely get those vibes with Evangeline and her love of cooking. But aside from that you have a really unique story that unfolds the minute she is transported to Mescos, the cursed kingdom where her TWO husbands await her...yup, this luckily lady got two, Niko and Zephyr. While this book can be read as a standalone you will understand the world building a lot more if you read from the start of the series. Each book will lead up to the last book. I know I will need to go back and read from the start but I still enjoyed this book despite being newly introduced to this world.

The plot can be a little predictable at times and the love was very fast (which is kind of expected with fated mates) but it still packs in mystery, emotion, and likable characters that you are rooting for the entire time. The ongoing hunger in their kingdom stressed me out though because it always felt like they were out of food (like NONE) but then they survived long enough for their battles (and spicy activities) with little mention of how or what they were eating. And when it was mentioned I breathed a little easier but kept wondering how much food was actually stored and how was it being distributed...sigh...I was STRESSED. I just wanted them all to eat something, for real, because food insecurity is no joke.

I'm excited to read the next installment because we are getting closer to The Guardian's story and I was immediately intrigued by him. I want to know his backstory!

Thank you to the author for giving me an ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own and offered voluntarily.

The series ramps up with this book and those little easter eggs are some of the biggest reveals in this series so far.
The start of this book is different from the rest, along with how Evangeline is left in this new world. I like how she doesn’t pretend to be something she is not and shows genuine fear. This makes total sense as not everyone can be like Lara Croft and have an exit strategy in every situation. I think Evangeline grows into her new role and this has lasting, but positive effects.
I think Nico and Zephyr make a great pair. Nico is positivity whilst Zephyr is restraint. I like how both know each other pressure points and can turn situations to suit them. It makes for a great dynamic, which gets even more of a challenge when Evangeline joins their relationship.
This is a fun, but serious read at the same time. This is a easy free-flowing read, with no superfluous scenes, but instead it is a fully engaging read that keeps me engaged until the final page.

This was an ARC read.
Even though this is book 5 it is perfectly readable as a stand alone ... but be warned it leaves you wanting more!
I loved the high fantasy level of this novel with the correct amount of spice ... the kind of spice that was a first for me, a bit out of my comfortzone, or so I thought. It took me longer than a general novel to read since I was recovering from being sick and was more tired but I think it was so hot at times, I just got rid of those germs by reading this book ...
Lovely 3 POV romantasy, that kept you on the edge of your seat, the storyline was captivating, the spice was well spicey and I know I will look for the other books too, I am definitely looking forward to book 6! For fans of the more sexy kinda book, for fans of fairies and true love, or even for fans that think cooking is a thing of love ... Go get it!

This is the only book I’ve actually read in the Grym Hollow books and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It is a why choose book, and I absolutely love this type of story.
Evangeline has decided to explore outside of her village, and in her travels she meets Niko is the sweet Fae king and Zephyr is the tough nut to crack on the outside, and they become her husbands. The characters are really interesting in their own sense and are very relatable. I really enjoyed the other characters in the story and I am looking forward to reading more as the series develops.

I was given an advanced copy of this book to read and I am reviewing with my honest and fair opinion.

The Fae’s Promise offers a pleasant fae romantasy with some genuinely lovely moments and a premise that shows real imagination. Tati Alvarez creates an atmospheric world with intriguing magical elements, and there are character beats—especially around promises and trust—that feel heartfelt and worth rooting for.
It’s a nice foundation that kept me reading, though it could be more polished with tighter pacing (a bit slow in places) and less repetition in certain emotional loops. Streamlining those would elevate the whole experience.
Still, a solid effort with charm and potential—definitely one for patient fae fans who enjoy quieter, reflective vibes.

The first book I read from Tati B. Alvarez.
Even though it's not the first in the series, this book can 100% be read without having read the other ones, like I did.

I must say, I really enjoyed this book. The storybuilding and worldbuilding was good. In some parts, perhaps a bit too quickly for my taste, but still very good.

And the spice? It was amazing!

Niw I do have a problem, I'll have more books to add to my TBR, because if you've read one, I can assure you, you'd want to read the rest.

A very good read indeed (:

This story pulls you into thier world. The emotions wrap around you and you feel like you are there with them. Evangeline had no idea what she was getting herself into but she throws herself into her new life without abandon.

The characters are wonderful and the world building is amazing. This was the best book of the series thus far in my opinion. There are some steamy scenes and therefore require an 18+ read.

This was a really well-written and absolutely delightful book. I went in without having read the previous Grym Hollow books (yet), but I was able to understand the world-building and backstory enough that this book drew me in. I loved the characters and their development together, especially their unique, combined romantic relationship. I also adored the side characters and look forward to adding more of this author's work to my TBR pile.

The author mentioned her friends encouraged her to write whychoose, they were right because this book was wonderful. The storyline was intriguing, writing was done well, the book wasn't stilted, the characters had depth from the beginning. I liked the humour from the nun and the frustration of the fmc kept me engaged. My only issue with the book was a personal one in that I prefer to read rh with a larger harem. Saying that, the mmc were well written.

As always, thank you so much for allowing me to be on your early reader team!

The Fae’s Promise by @tati.b.alvarez.author is out today!! This was quite possibly my favorite book in the series. I enjoy a well done why choose & The Fae’s Promise did not disappoint. All the characters in Tati’s books have past drama they have to work through, but they find their people and we always get a happy ending. Her stories are definitely comfort reads for me.

This is book 5 in the Grym Hollow universe and follows the Fae. We are learning more about the battle being fought in Mescos and getting more details on why the attacks are happening through the land.
Evangeline is our human bride and she mated to Niko but Niko is already fated to Zephyr. The Fae frequently have multiple mates and don’t experience jealousy the same way as humans. Will this really work? Why did the guardian send Evangeline, who is passionate about cooking, into a starving land with no food? They say Fae aren’t jealous people, but her fated mate’s other fated mate seems to hate her, so how is this going to work?

This was such a fascinating and engaging story. I love a good why choose, and this delivered. It was steamy and sweet. Twists and turns. I loved the kingdoms and the world building in this. The description immediately pulled me in and I had a wonderful time reading this one.

The chemistry between the characters was really good. I am normally not a why choose fan but I really enjoyed this story and want the next book already
