I adore this couple so much, and they are by far one of my favorites from this year.
============================
Background:
Winnie got entangled with one of her father's employees, a driver, to be exact, and has been in a casual relationship sans sex since last year. When she finally slept with him, the asshole videotaped that private moment without her permission and threatened Spencer, her father, that he was going to send it to media outlets. With this problem, Spencer asked for the help of his own rival, Timothy (Archer's father), because they have wide connections to media companies. Timothy took this opportunity to gain leverage over them and proposed an arranged marriage and to have a part of the company's ownership. Both parties agreed, hence the reason for their arranged marriage.
============================
Winnie (23/24) didn't like the marriage idea at all because she's a romantic at heart and wants to be married for love. However, she was instilled with the value of upholding the company's reputation and their family name from a very young age, so she had to do everything that was required of her.
Archer (35) was a closed-off person and always put people at arm's length. His upbringing made him not trust anyone so easily. I'd even say he's grumpy and doesn't like people very much. Also, at his current age and status in life, he still finds himself wanting to impress his father, making it the most important goal in his life.
Like Winnie, he didn't want to get married; it didn't even cross his mind at all. But since he wanted to please his father, he went along with it. He went to Spencer's company to meet with him and Winnie and to tell them about the agreement. It was also here when he witnessed Winnie's father's treatment of her. Despite moving in the same circles, he really doesn't know her, but all of a sudden, he feels protective of her.
Winnie's father painted her as a meek, submissive, and yes-woman to Archer's family. But when they officially met before the day of their wedding, Winnie showed how much of a strong-willed person she is. She never backed down despite feeling intimated by Archer's presence, held her ground, and laid out her conditions for the marriage alliance. She negotiated that she'd only want to be married for a year, and she hoped they would split amicably because she's still hoping to find that person whom she's going to marry for real. He was actually impressed to see that she was so different from what had been told him, and he eventually agreed to this condition. But he also said that they would revisit the marriage arrangement after a year.
When they got married, with each passing day, they're slowly becoming friends. Archer also realizes how much Winnie is a genuine, honest, and sincere person. She's gradually tearing down his walls and getting under his skin. While he isn't the kind of guy who usually shows much concern for others, with Winnie, he always felt the need to protect her, cheer her up, and make her feel good. Let's not forget how he always calls her "his wife" and makes everyone know about it. It's so swoony to read his possessiveness. 🥰
As for Winnie, I don't know how she makes it so effortlessly easy to be kind but also a fierce person. She has a lot of opinions and ideas, and she's not hesitant to share them with Archer. She wears her heart on her sleeves, and despite what happened to her, this didn't make her jaded at all. Yes, she was wary of trusting her husband in the beginning because she grew up knowing they were enemies. But she's not completely against the idea of doing it; she's just cautious not to be taken advantage of again.
But time and time again, Archer proved that she could trust him and that he trusted her too. And it was honestly sweet how they became a real couple. These two had the most honest and mature relationship I've read so far this year. They communicate and understand one another, and not once did I read that they acted so childishly.
I have to say that I was almost afraid that they'd have a third-act breakup, given how the plot was developing over the last 20%. Thankfully, though, they made the decision to discuss the problem openly and work together to find a solution. Open communication is definitely the key.
Overall, I could say so many more good things about this book and how much I love Archer and Winnie, but I think it's still way better to experience this kind of heartwarming feeling firsthand. They're so good together, and it was quite rare to read about a couple with an age gap that gets along so well.
With all these ramblings, all I want to say is that I think this is a good story, and readers should give it a try. 😂
