Her healing touch saved others—but who can save her?
Lyrielle has one purpose in life—to heal others. Kept in a tower by her aunt and only allowed to interact with those who need the healing power of her hair, she has lived the last ten years separated from the world. Finally forced to escape the only way she can, Lyrielle begins her climb down the tower—but loses her grip.
Instead of falling to her death, she falls from her tower and out of her world, crashing into the waves of an ocean she’s never seen before. Now she must learn to trust the prince who pulled her from the sea, but she’s terrified to reveal too much of herself lest he use her the way everyone else has.
While searching for the mermaid who saved his life, Prince Tavric is shocked when he pulls a girl with impossibly long hair from the ocean. Confused by her sudden appearance in his kingdom, but drawn to her fascination with the world he takes for granted, Tavric is anxious to show her the wonders outside her tower. But his father is dying, and knowing he will take the throne all too soon, he worries if falling for Lyri means foisting a burden on her for which she cannot possibly be prepared.
When someone from Lyri’s world threatens to tear her from the new life she’s built, will Tavric be able to keep her safe, or will she be forced back to the life she fled?
A spellbinding and heart wrenching mashup of Rapunzel and The Little Mermaid, Tangled Sails explores the weight of our gifts and the strength of accepting help.
Torn from one fairytale and trapped in the Displaced Fairytales series is a multi-author fairytale retelling series of standalones from your favorite swoony, closed-door young adult romance authors.
I love words. I always have. In songs, in poems, in books, in movies—words move me. In my younger years, I dabbled in writing as a therapy and an escape, but I never expected it to become more than that. While deep in the depths of mommying several small children, I took seven years to write my first book, Just Ella. During that time, I taught myself how to write a novel through a whole lot of trial and error. Not the most time-efficient method, but it gave me an education I wouldn’t have received from a class or a how-to book. Something about the struggle of writing without a formula or rules worked for me. I wrote for me. I wrote from my heart space, and I think that’s the reason that Just Ella has found room in so many of my readers’ heart spaces.
I write clean romance because I love it. I love the discovery of new love. I love the relationship building that’s done with looks, words, brushing fingers, and tentative kisses. Jane Eyre is the hero of my youth and taught me that being true to yourself and clinging to your convictions will be hard, but it will bring you more genuine happiness than giving up on yourself ever can.
I am an extraordinarily happy wife, and a mother of five kids. I’ve lived in Utah, Arizona, Missouri, and Virginia, but my heart is now firmly ensconced in Idaho where we’ve built a home and a community.
I love chocolate, waterfalls, pretty teacups, the sight and sound of ocean waves, and most especially my husband and my five littles. I love books that leave me with a sigh of contentment, and I aspire to write stories that do the same for my readers.
Oh look, another Annette K. Larsen book that’s kept me up until four in the morning. I really ought to have learned my lesson by now with her books and not starting them at night, but I imagine this will happen again in the future. 🤷🏻♀️
I have been so excited for this book because 1- the author and 2- Rapunzel retelling mash-up with A Little Mermaid. Enough said. I’ve thought it before, but this book especially highlighted the similarities between Rapunzel and Ariel—particularly their wide-eye awe of seeing a new world and things they’ve never experienced before. That element is easily my favorite of the Little Mermaid story, so I loved seeing it in this book with Lyrielle.
Unlike the popular movie, Tangled, this Rapunzel has been locked up in a tower not because of the wicked woman using her for herself, but by her aunt in order to heal others (for a price, of course). This added in some sad and serious notes to the story because of Lyrielle being mistreated, manipulated, and used for years without consent and without really knowing what was going on. Our Prince has his work cut out for him to help Lyrielle from all the trauma she’s faced and give her the space to explore.
I do want to note that the romance was a touch much for me in some places with their emotions/feelings and whatnot, but it was very sweet overall and I liked the two of them together. Unlike other retellings I’ve read featuring a girl who hasn’t experienced the outside world, Lyrielle didn’t seem like she was super young with the love interest having to “teach” her about romance; instead, they just felt together perfectly. Could have done a bit more commutation but it *is* an Annette K. Larsen book (aka angst galore) so it couldn’t be smooth sailing for our couple. Pun intended. 😁
Both epilogues (the one in the book and the extra bonus on the author’s website) were absolutely precious. Lyrielle was such a precious character and I loved seeing her dreams. I can’t help but hope that Annette K. Larsen will do books about Tavric’s brothers so we can see glimpses of our cute couple again.
Main Content- Spiritual/Magic- Lyrielle has a magical gift of healing where when she sings, she can heal someone’s injuries; When she heals someone, her hair glows and she often feels tired if she’s done too much; Lyrielle lives a in a kingdom that has a magical shroud protecting it from the outside world that hates magic; Lyrielle’s magic “manifested” when she was nine after extreme grief; Lyrielle has begun to think of her gift as a curse; *Spoilers* *Major Spoilers* ; Healing someone with magic & another feeling the healing (handful of sentences).
Lyrielle’s aunt says she was revered, but Lyrielle says it was her hair that was revered.
When Lyrielle meets Tavric, she wonders if she’s in a “strange afterlife” but doesn’t think that’s right; Tavric wonders if kissing Lyrielle would be like heaven.
Many mentions of magic, magical gifts (though only Lyrielle’s healing magic is mentioned, it sounds like there’s other kinds), sorcerers, mermaids and sirens, & potions; Mentions of a sorcerer using his magic to hurt those who displeased him; Mentions of drinking magical potions (which Lyrielle says she’s hates drinking because it makes her feel off); A few mentions of magic that uses talismans and incantations; A couple mentions of luck & being lucky; A mention of sea gods; A mention of Lyrielle “centering” herself before a trying task.
Language/Negative/Dangerous Situations- No language, but fictional in-world phrases like ‘starts be praised’, ‘stars above’, ‘Poseiden’s hoard’, and ’sparks and fire’ are said.
Some lying (though Lyrielle tries to avoid it); A bit of eye rolling; Some sibling jealousy & hurtful comments (that eventually get better).
Lyrielle has been a prisoner of her aunt in a tower for ten years due to her healing magic (which she parrots what her aunt would say, that her aunt was “protecting” her), because of this Lyrielle has moments of panic when she thinks Tavric is upset at her (but is really upset at hearing about her aunt’s treatment) and didn’t know she was being mistreated until Tavric says what she experienced was mistreatment and was used by others; Lyrielle struggles with feeling guilty about making a “selfish” decision regarding her gifts (which Tavric later says that it is not selfish of her and that everyone else has been greedy and selfish about her gift).
As an additional content note, but not negative: Tavric has a a sensory sensitivity disorder and there are scenes of him being overwhelmed with noises, large crowds, and different materials (which causes him to closed his eyes and cover his ears & quickly take off uncomfortable clothes/accessories).
Almost drowning, Being threatened with harm/death, Being held at knife-point, Being stabbed, Being kidnapped, Injuries, Pain, Blood/Bleeding, Passing out (up to a handful of sentences); Seeing someone poisoned, killed, & the body (up to a few sentences).
Many mentions of those near death/dying, illnesses, injuries, pain, & blood/bleeding (up to a couple sentences); Mentions of deaths & grief (including Lyrielle for her parents, Tavric for his father who is ill, & a wife for her husband); Mentions of possible drownings; Mentions of Lyrielle’s aunt locking her up in a tower, in a windowless room for disobedience, giving her a potion that leaves her feeling hazy, and/or withholding food from her for days; Mentions of lies, lying, liars, & deceit; Mentions of gossip & rumors; A few mentions of Lyrielle being enslaved for her magic; A few mentions of Tavric being drunk and falling off a ship (he was drinking due to bad news; this happened prior to the book starting); A few mentions of alcohol & side characters drinking (including one of Tavric’s brothers); A couple mentions of pirates/ruffians; A couple mentions of jealousy; A mention of a possible assassin.
Sexual/Romance- 2 head kisses, 1 cheek kiss, 6 kisses lasting a sentence, 2 kisses lasting 2-3 sentences, 1 kiss lasting 3-4 sentences, Wanting to kiss, touch, & embrace (up to a few sentences); Staring at lips (up to a couple sentences).
Touches, Embraces, Dancing, Hand holding, Warmth, Flutters, & Nearness (up to a few sentences); Blushes; Noticing & Staring (including curves due to wet clothes, up to a couple sentences).
Lyrielle’s biggest wish is to live her own life and have a family, but her aunt dismisses that idea and says she’s too valuable to throw herself away on something as “mundane as marriage” (which hurts Lyrielle and she wonders if her aunt views motherhood to be “something completely unextraordinary” and selfish; Later, Tavric says the biggest lie her aunt told her is that motherhood is selfish).
When first saving Lyrielle, Tavric has her sleep in his bed and he sleeps in the chair because he won’t dishonor her, himself, or his parents by sleeping in the same bed with her.
When looking at Tavric, Lyrielle thinks that he looks “scrumptious” but she doesn’t know why she would attach that word to a man.
A couple mentions of liking someone and pinning over a young man.
Okay, this was so good! I wasn’t sure at first and I almost didn’t read it. But I love a Rapunzel retelling and one mashed up with the Little Mermaid is so cool! I really liked Lyrielle…what a beautiful name! She was a great Rapunzel character and I related to her in some ways especially with wanting to be a mother and have children. I think more books should have that. Tavric was great! I really liked him other than a couple parts where he felt a bit possessive and didn’t just tell her what was going on. Their love story was so sweet and I was cheering them on the whole way! I just loved them! I really liked all of the nods to Rapunzel and Little Mermaid. They were woven together so well! I really liked the mermaids and would love a story for Melody! This was a really unique retelling and I loved it! This is definitely one of my favorites by Annette K Larsen.
This book was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!!!!! Both the main characters were so good and I loved the story sooooo much!!!!! But the reason why I loved it so much was the main guy. He is literally me when it comes to social interactions and no one understands it. Exactly what he experiences is what I do and it was so cool actually seeing it in a book. I immediately told my friends they needed to read it. So yeah, I LOVED it!!!!!
Violence: High Mild. Near drowning. Poisoning with mottled facial features. One 'on screen' death. Stab wound and minor blood depicted on clothes and skin. Scrapes and bruises. Magical injuries described as black marks on the body.
Sexual: Mild. Hand holding, hugs, noticing broad shoulders. Hands in hair, around waist. Bodies flush together with hugs. Swoony not spicy kisses. Mention of having lots of kids.
Triggers: Abuse from a family member through neglect and isolation. Some gaslighting present to keep control over a person.
Other content: Does describe sensory processing disorder and overstimulation.
More like a 4.5
I loved this one. Usually Rapunzel is iffy for me because of the whole isolation/trapped aspect, but this one thankfully doesn't have that too long and she's free pretty much at the start of the story. Thank goodness. It can get really depressing really fast if the majority of the story is her in the tower.
Tavric and Lyrielle are such a great couple. I loved their story. Annette Larsen always delivers characters that have realistic flaws and personalities. It makes it so enjoyable to read when the two main characters come together in a believable and sweet way. It's not perfect, but it's real.
Tavric pulls Lyrielle from the ocean when she falls through a portal, and he shows her a world she's been cut off from for ten years. She's constantly touched and overwhelmed by his easy friendship and how he gives her choices and notices her needs. Lyrielle is a source of calm and safety for Tavric, who is overwhelmed by his obligations as crown prince as well as his father's illness which is looking terminal.
The way that Tavric comes to his conclusions about Lyrielle was heartbreaking but 100% understandable. I found myself thinking, 'yup, I would've done the same thing'. Watching Tavric deal with a sensory issue was fascinating and validating. I've dealt with sensory processing disorder for years and it's rough when those times come that you can't sneak off or accommodate your overload. I was beside myself for him as he tried so hard to keep it together but just couldn't function the way he thought he had to. My gosh that was well done. And his brother (the one that started with a 'C' that I can't spell offhand) was a hero for seeing Tavric's struggle and validating that even though he didn't understand, it was a real thing. I was kinda wanting him to slug the other brother in the gut for being such a jerk and making things worse...but that was also realistic. He didn't hate his brother, but his own baggage made things worse for everyone.
The plot was fantastic too, I loved seeing the ins and outs of how everything came full-circle, even though there were things that weren't wrapped up with a pretty bow. It worked. And I appreciated how things worked out regardless of the peril that ensued.
The other thing that I adored was Lyrielle's dream. Her main reason for wanting to escape the tower was that she wanted a family. She wanted to experience the world, yes, but her main dream was to be a mother. To have that in her life. You just don't see that in fiction, and it made my heart melt. Typically now it's all about the ambitious girls who are fiercely independent and successful in their jobs. You don't see that desire for family much. Children are sorta an afterthought, not a goal. I loved that that was part of Lyrielle's being. She wanted to be a mother as well as a wife.
It was such a good read. I'm tempted to up the rating. It was just too lovely on so many levels. I honestly can't thing of anything that hampered the read. So good.
Tangled Sails by Annette K. Larsen is the third and final ARC I signed up for in the upcoming Displaced Fairytales series. This book brings together the protagonists from "Rapunzel" and "The Little Mermaid" with a heavier focus on "Rapunzel." It is a heartwarming tale of healing, generosity, and personal growth. As the title implies, the book borrows some elements that are unique to the Disney version of the tale, but the worldbuilding and characters set it apart as an original take.
Lyrielle has been locked in a tower ever since her magic powers manifested when she was a child. Her aunt invited the local villagers to stand at the base of the tower any time they needed healing from her long, magical hair. One day, in an attempt to escape her captivity, she fell through a portal into the ocean of another realm, where she was rescued by a prince named Tavric, who was searching for a mermaid who once rescued him from drowning. In order to pull Lyrielle from a watery grave, Tavric is forced to cut her long hair, removing the source of her power. Now, she must rely on him for guidance on how to live an ordinary life in the outside world.
This book leans more heavily on "Rapunzel" than it does "The Little Mermaid." Though Tavric has a royal fiancée whom his parents want him to form an alliance with, she is never implied to be the woman involved with his near-drowning incident, and has little overall importance to the story. Instead, Tavric is immediately drawn to Lyrielle after learning about her imprisonment in the tower. He is determined to help her find the freedom she deserves now that she has escaped. Through Tavric, Lyrielle realizes how much she was mistreated and finally has an opportunity to heal.
Healing and selflessness are the two biggest themes of this story. Although Lyrielle is an expert at healing physical conditions, she spent most of her life unaware of the mental and emotional strain that this task caused for her. Tavic devotes himself to helping her heal as she, in turn, supports him with the strain of his royal duties and his sick father. These two characters are so selfless that they become needlessly concerned about being burdens on each other, and must learn to accept the kindness of others to become a healthy couple.
Tangled Sails is a heartfelt addition to the Displaced Fairytales series, weaving together elements of "Rapunzel" and "The Little Mermaid" into a beautiful tale of healing, growth, and love. Annette K. Larsen's unique world-building and lovable characters make for a relaxing read that's sure to leave you feeling uplifted.
4⭐️ ARC Review: My second Rapunzel book, and I happened to have read my first one this month as well! Does that information matter? Not at all. But I can tell you that each book was completely its own story. Even though they are both spins on the original tale.
Bravo to all the authors who conjured up this series. What a fresh and exciting way to write retellings. Two stories mashed into one! This one was Rapunzel and Prince Eric.
To sum up how I feel about this book, I will say it was just so wholesome. There are definitely dark undertones, but their love story was so incredibly wholesome. I didn’t love anybody else in this book though. Maybe one of Tavric’s brothers but that’s it. So the main characters were what drove this story.
Other than the wholesomeness of this book, I can’t find any other words. That’s not a bad thing though. It’s unique, it’s sweet, you can’t help but love these characters. They were seriously so sweet. Tavric was so good to Lyrielle and Lyrielle was so innocent. Tavric teaches her to dance, and it was just kick your feet sweet. And she helps him with his sensory issues with her calming presence. They just worked so well together.
So all summed up, if you want a warm hug of a romance, this is the book. Unique, sweet, wholesome, tender, all the cute things.
*Thank you to the author for the ARC of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This was an amazing book! I simply couldn’t not put it down. This no spice romantic fantasy is a fairy tale retelling mashup between Rapunzel and The Little Mermaid. I absolutely adore it! Lyri lost her parents at age 9 and after that she gained a gift of healing people through her hair. Her aunt sequestered her away in a tower and everyone came to be healed by her. All she was allowed to do was heal, sew, and read “approved” books. One day, after her aunt adamantly told her she’d never be allowed out and allowed to marry, she tried climbing down her tower but the weight of her hair was too much. She crashed…into the sea! Where Prince Tavric pulled her out and showed her what freedom and friendship looked like. This book has many twists and I’m not going to spoil them but I just couldn’t keep from turning these pages until the book was done. I didn’t want it to end! The romance is just kisses, intimacy level 1.
I received an eARC of this book from the author and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Wow! I have always loved Prince Eric and Rapunzel but I never considered how WELL they would go together! If you love The Little Mermaid and Tangled then check this book out!
Thank you to Annette for including me on her ARC team! I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.
Lyrielle has been trapped in a tower and forced to heal people for the last ten years of her life, ever since an illness took her parents and her aunt locked her away to “protect” her newfound healing magic. After discovering that she would never be allowed to leave and live her own life, Lyri takes it upon herself to climb out of her tower, only to fall from the weight of her hair and land…in water?
Prince Tavric is expected to take over as king once his father passes, which is expected to be soon due to his failing health. Overwhelmed by the expectations he now faces, and the grief over the impending loss of his father, Tavric frequently escapes on the sea. As he searches for a mermaid who saved him after an unfortunate recent accident, he finds a mysterious young woman with unfathomably long hair dropped in the middle of the sea, and rescues her.
As Lyri and Tavric spend more time together, he begins to show her what life and friendship should be like while she helps to comfort him in the overwhelm of taking over the kingdom.
Lyri is so sweet and strong and I loved watching her come to understand her own worth OUTSIDE of her healing magic. Her care for others is inspiring and her love for life makes you want to frolic along a beach!
Tavric is also a very caring and strong person, putting aside his own overwhelming struggles in order to do what is best for his family and for his kingdom. It was nice to watch him grow to understand that his relationship Lyri is give and take and that he is not selfish for needing her in his life.
If you love fairytale retellings then you should most definitely check out Tangled Sails!
Content Warning: *Potential Spoilers Ahead (Vague)* Toxic family member Parental death (off page) Parental illness (on page, vague) Violence (knife threatening) Death via poison Clean romance No language No innuendo
Rapunzel + The Little Mermaid! This was a fun mixed retelling. I enjoyed spotting the different parts of the two stories in this book. I also always appreciate the neurodivergence representation (possible SPD for the prince) and love how Lyriel was able to be his calming space. I am always here for a new book by Annette K. Larsen! She is an automatic read for me!
Oh this book was so much fun! I loved every minute of it. I was stuck in a mechanics office for 5 hours and was very entertained by the book the whole time. I love the magic, the characters, the story line. All of it works sooo well! There is also neurodivergent representation en it& et is done well. You have the MMC that is neurodivergent and 1 of his brothers knows his body language so well to be able understand his feelings & see the pain he’s in. Then there's another brother that's completely oblivious I rude about it. Great representation. For all you Rapunzel & little mermaid fans you need to read this book.
My gosh my daughters would have loved this author when they were younger. I wish I loved fairytales still, I've kind of outgrown them. I still love to read Annette's books. they are always so unusual. This is Little mermaid meets Rapunzel. fun idea:)
This is such a fun mashup of Rapunzel and the Little Mermaid. I love the way Annette entwined them together.
Lyrielle was just the cutest. She definitely has the Disney Rapunzel vibes about her, and I’m 100% here for it. She’s sweet, kind, naive, and full of energy, excitement, wonder, and hope. Tavric is caring, loyal, and self sacrificing. He struggles with his Sensory Processing Disorder but just pushes through because he knows his parents are depending on him. I love how Lyrielle and Tavric help each other. Their strengths and weaknesses were meant to balance each other out. They are simply the cutest meant to be couple.
The plot was well paced. It has a little mystery, magic, miscommunication, danger, and fun. I enjoyed every minute of it.
Highly recommend for teens and adults.

Spice: none just sweet kisses/moments Violence: imprisoned by aunt, threatening with a knife, poisoning Language: none
Language: None Spice Level: 1 (kisses only) Fun mix of the prince from the little mermaid and Rapunzel. The brothers were fun side characters. Loved how the rescue wasn’t dragged out like they often are - quick and efficient princely rescue. Had a few slow parts, but overall a cute story
This was an absolutely fantastic no-spice fairytale retelling! The world-building was richly detailed, the characters were wonderful, and the twists shocked me! I loved the way the author wove The Little Mermaid and Rapunzel into a portal fantasy that blended together nicely. I enjoyed watching Lyri really find herself outside the confines of her aunt's tower, and how Prince Tav sees her worth even when she doesn't. I especially appreciated that the prince was neurodivergent, and how Lyri recognized and supported his anxiety. I highly recommend this for any fantasy reader!
Lyrielle's hair is cherished by everyone in her village because when she sings it heals. Her aunt keeps her locked in a tower, not letting anyone get close, except to touch the ends of her hair for healings. When she finally gets the courage to escape out the window, she suddenly finds herself falling into an ocean, and being rescued by the handsome Prince Tavric. Prince Tav has been searching for the mermaid that saved him a month ago from drowning, but he didn't expect to find the beautiful girl with long flowing hair drowning in the middle of nowhere. Unfortunately, to save her from drowning he is forced to cut the hair that defined her life. Lyri is welcomed into the royal family as a guest, and flourishes in her newfound freedom. Tav enjoys her company, but many responsibilities fall to him. While Tav struggles with the weight of his father's illness and mounting anxiety, he finds peace in Lyri's presence. Learning of her past, he vows to never let anyone use her again. With danger where they never expected, and the reality of the truth coming to light, they fight against all the odds stacked against them.
I received an Advanced Reader Copy with no expectation of a review. All opinions are my own.
I love how Tavric & Lyri both felt so comfortable with each other & how she was able to calm him.
I really appreciate how having problems with sensory overload was shown & all the care & thought Lyri put into to helping to ease Tavric & how Tavric was so considerate of everything Lyri had been through & helped her to learn & heal.
I was really rooting for both characters especially, after everything that they had been through, so I loved seeing them find joy together & get their happy ending!
This has definitely become my favorite book by Annette K. Larsen! Such a sweet story of a friendship that turns into a couple who loves each other and only wants the very best for each other. I honestly look forward to reading it again.
I loved this book! It was a sweet and compelling story. The mashup of Rapunzel and the Little Mermaid was creative and unique. I loved how these two tales came together. Very well done and fantastic world building. Lyri and Tavric were fantastic characters. They had a great dynamic. So many sweet and swoony moments! I loved how they encourage each other. The romance was kisses only. Tangled Sails was a riveting story that I did not want it to end! I hope we get to read more in this world. Honestly would love it if there were books about Tavric’s brothers someday!
3.5 would probably be more accurate. I did genuinely enjoy the story, and it was a nice diversion! I didn't feel like Larsen's writing was quite up to the standard of some of her other books, though. Even though I liked it, I didn't find myself as deeply and personally invested as I was in some of the others.
When a gift (in this case magical healing) becomes a commodity, used to benefit others but at the cost of consent and freedom, it becomes slavery. I loved how Tav valued Lyrielle, for who she was, not for what she could do. Good clean story.
All the feelings and emotions in this book!! 😢😢😢 I love how they both see the other one struggle and wants to help them. Tavric doesn't want to use Lyri like she is used to. Lyri see Tavric struggle in his role and can just give him a small smile. I love their little get-aways to the garden and beach.❤️ I love the slow burn between them😍 The ending was so sweet and I just love it!!
I received an ARC for the Displaced Fairytale series. This one is Tangled sails its a mix of Rupunzel and Little Mermaid. And it was awesome. This is Lyri and Tavric's story.. Lyri is the town healer but she is not allowed to leave her tower finally getting the courage to tell her aunt that she wants a family. He aunt tells her she is being selfish. So she trys to leave not anticipating her hair being as heavy she falls but goes through a portal. She ends up in the ocean. Prince Tavric is out looking for Melody the mermaid who saved him to thank her when he finds and pulls Lyri out of the ocean and it changes his entire life. His father is dying. Hes not ready to be king. He has bad anxiety and Sensitivity to touch but not with her. I truly love them together he truly sees her as herself not for her magic. And she help calm him. I hope we learn more about this world. I truly enjoy it.
I love this mashup of Rapunzel and The Little Mermaid. Lyrielle has been kept in a tower for ten years by her greedy aunt. When she tries to climb down the tower to freedom she falls. Instead of falling to her death she finds herself in the ocean. Tavric has been trying to find peace amidst the chaos of his life. His Father is dying and he will be the new king. He finds calm sailing. He rescues Lyrielle from the ocean. I loved the relationship they built and the calming presence and safety from the storms of life that they find in each other. This is a fabulous book.
I received an ARC copy of this book from the author and even though I wasn’t required to post a review I WANTED to offer my honest, voluntary impression upon finishing it.
Annette’s writing has always called to me- it’s like a siren’s song I suppose because I can always identify with the characters she writes about! It’s so easy to get caught up in a book when you enjoy it right from the outset and you don’t want to put it down until you’re finished and then it’s reluctantly because there is no more! That was the case with this story of Lyri and Tav!
Lyri is locked up in a tower by her aunt and uses her healing power she always has felt is in her hair so its never cut- also allowing her to let it down in a long braid so the people on the ground can touch it while she sings and heal them. However, after 10 years she wants to break free and see the world around her and not feel like she’s a prisoner!
One day she decides to escape but all her long hair falls at once as she’s trying to climb down from the tower and the weight causes her to lose her grip and she falls. However instead of landing on the hard ground and dying she lands in water and as luck would have it is spotted and is rescued but in so doing her long hair is cut to save her life. She thinks she has no magic to heat anyone now but later she finds that not to be the case.
She is rescued by a crown prince and after being isolated from being around people and land she revels in her freedom from the tower and is perplexed because no one has heard of the land she came from.
The prince’s father is gravely ill and he is reluctant to take the crown but knows he must soon. Then she has an opportunity to see him and doing what she always has done in the past sings to him but holds his hands because her hair is cut and finds her magic is still there to heal him but due to her fear of being used like she has been she stretches it out but is caught by someone who she thinks is a friend but she is mistaken.
She feels an attraction towards the prince but a princess arrives to try and become his wife so she pulls away. However she still wants to heal the king so she does so but is captured again afterward by the person who was supposed to be a friend who has an agenda of his own. This leads to a chase by the prince to retrieve her leading them on a journey she doesn’t want to take.
This story has elements of two fairytales- Rapunzel and The Little Mermaid and I enjoyed seeing them mixed together resulting in this wonderful, captivating story of love, adventure, loss and regaining that love and love for life once again after events neither anticipated happening.
I wholeheartedly and enthusiastically recommend this story to everyone who loves fairytales and to urge those of you who think you’re too old to enjoy this genre now to come back and give it another chance! Fairytales have a magically quality that calls to us to read them no matter how old we may be! I’ve loved them for over 70 years and I still love the wonderful feeling I have as I read them and picture myself in the story where everything is taking place!
I can picture the angst our heroes face when they fight their inner doubts and demons as to what they should do based on what they believe and fear of breaking those bonds for something unknown but something they want to explore nonetheless!
I throughly enjoyed this book and am confident you will as well when you read it!

Romance: Yes Clean level: • 2 mouth kisses minimally described preceded by a desire to kiss, resting temples against each other; followed by skimming fingers down cheek, woman snuggling into man’s neck; 5-6 paragraphs worth • Man picks wife up and spins her, “love[s] the way her body mold[s]” to his brushing lips against hers, kisses her while cradling her jaw, then she nestles her head under his chin; 2 paragraphs • 1 mouth kiss minimally described over a paragraph, 3 barely described, 2 without description • 1 instance woman thinks man will kiss her though he doesn’t, 1 paragraph • 1 thought of kissing, 3 sentences • 1 desire to kiss and tracing cheek, 1 desire to kiss • 1 head kiss • 1 cheek kiss, no description • 3 instances of looking at lips • 1 instance of raking fingers into hair • 2 instances of brushing jaw with thumb • 1 instance of man realizing how close his face is to a woman’s and how she is “pressed against his body” • 1 hug over a paragraph • 1 instance of noticing body heat and “breadth” of a man’s chest; another instance of heat *See caveats below
Sensitive aspects: • Woman thinks of man as “scrumptious” • Passing reference to woman’s curves showing under her drenched clothes • Reference to man not (innocently) sleeping on the same bed as a woman so as not to dishonor either of them or his parents
Favorite aspects of the book: • The way the protagonists save each other in one sense or another • The twist on “Rapunzel’s” magic • The mermaids
Thoughts on main characters: • Lyri - Full of simple joy and gratitude, courageous, tenacious • Tavric - Courageous, persistent despite overwhelm, dutiful, emotionally self-sacrificing
This is exactly what I was expecting from this series concept: While escaping down the side of her tower, the Rapunzel character falls through a portal into the sea in the prince’s kingdom. The Little Mermaid portion is a very small part; this is mostly a Tangled Rapunzel retelling.
This book offers a thoughtful exploration of the sometimes delicate boundary between using someone and forming a genuine connection through mutual need and benefit. Lyri has been exploited all her life by people who ended up seeing her as a tool rather than a person, giving of herself often to complete strangers. Tavric comes to realize that she does something similar for him mentally and emotionally but doesn’t understand that, though he is right to be thoughtful about his motivations for spending time with her, people in good relationships inherently benefit from them, and when each gives willingly to the other and both appreciate the gift they are receiving, the connection will transcend any self-interest we all naturally have. Everyone wants to be — and is — needed. It’s when people are taken for granted and are sought out purely for personal benefit that it becomes self-serving.
Favorite Quotations: • My healing magic flowed down through my hair, and it only took a few seconds before Gregor was moving his arm about and then grinning up at me. “What would I do without you?” “Bleed out,” I said dryly. “Suffer horrible infection. Die.” • “Please.” He gestured to a long, skinny table pushed up against one wall that held an assortment of food. “Help yourself to anything you’d like.” Certainly, I thought to myself. No problem. I’ll just fix a plate and sit down to breakfast in a beautiful, elegant room with a prince. And then, tomorrow, I might fly amongst the clouds and train a chipmunk to dance.
(I received a free ARC of this book from the author and am gratefully—voluntarily—leaving a review.)
TANGLED SAILS (Displaced Fairytales) by: Annette K. Larsen @annetteklarsen
-I give 4.5 stars!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨
~When Prince Tavric went looking for the mermaid who saved him, he didn’t expect to pull a girl with impossibly long hair from the ocean… Her healing touch saved others—but who can save her?
-TANGLED SAILS, is a delightful and intriguing mash up of fairytales. It effortlessly blends together Rapunzel and The Little Mermaid in such a clever, exciting way. It’s a dear story filled wonderful with heartwarming moments, bravery, healing, swoony moments, humor, generosity, and growth. It has a dying king, a looming crown, and a looming threat from Lyrielle’s past that quickly forces dear characters with the deciding if and what they’re willing to risk for the great possibility of love and freedom. While there are complications, there is such possibilities for something more weaved within, with living a life with happiness. I adored how dear characters rallied and supported each other’s needs with such unselfish love and devotion. The way their relationship begins simply with care, to sweet friendship to something more was delightful. Healing came from within, which had such a rippling effect for the better, and I loved seeing the difference the peace that comes with healing and freedoms. Joy amid the hard radiates beautifully. This quick-paced delightful mashup of fairytales is worth the read!✨🙌🏻📚🩷
•Content: light themes of magic used/represented, Toxic family member, death of loved ones (off page, in past; mentioned on page), parental illness (off page, in past; on page, but vague), betrayal, kidnapping, mild danger, knife (self-defense scenario), death of side character (villain; from potion page), no language, neurodivergence represented, sensory and texture needs represented, weighted gifts-talents being taken advantage of; kisses only, no spice!
This is an arc review. So thank you so much to Annette K. Larsen for letting me read her book!
Tangled Sails is such a good story. I loved Lyrielle. She is such a sweetheart and so innocent to the world. A world she longs to see and be a part of. She is easily excited and loves to talk to people and learn things. She’s also very strong and determined when she has her mind set on something. We can see that in her escape from her tower.
As for Tavric he’s very quiet and introverted. Protective of those he cares for and willing to do what it takes to ensure their safety. So long as he doesn’t have to deal with crowds. (He makes do when he has to but the poor guy prefers the peacefulness of solitude.) Basically the exact opposite to Lyri. But I suppose that’s what makes them such a good couple. They even each other out and pull out each others best qualities.
Anyway when he finds her half drowned after her recent escape he is instantly drawn to this sweet innocent girl and takes her under his wing. He comes to rely on her for comfort in the chaos of his life (especially with his father not doing very well and him needing to take on more responsibilities.) And she needs to learn, after years of being used and her power being abused by people she thought cared for her, what love and caring really is.
But what happens when the Tavric has a princess coming to possibly arrange a betrothal? When the kings life is on the line and Lyri might be able to help but is scared of people using her again?
Sorry no spoilers here folks. If you want to know for yourself please go read the book!
Tangled Sails is such a unique and intriguing take on Rapunzel. The opening had me hooked and then the story slowed a bit before all the threads came together in an incredible way and I eagerly raced through the rest of the book.
Lyrielle is open, adventurous, empathetic, and kind. She yearns to be free, start a family, and to be loved for who she is, not what she can do. She also has hair that heals, a love for people, and an infectious ability to find joy in almost anything. Tavric is dutiful, adventurous, and kind. Large groups of people or loud noises make him uncomfortable, but he longs to be a good king and to find a way to do so sustainably. He also hopes his father will get well. Tav is also protective, kind, and self-sacrificial. He will do just about anything for those he loves.
The descriptions in the book are amazing and will leave you wanting to touch grass or find a beach. The journey of the characters is wholesome as the two recover from past hurts and try to appreciate every moment to its fullest. The romance is clean and the violence is minimal and not gory. This book is part of a multi author series of standalone fairy tale mashups.
This was a fun and sweet story! I loved how the author combined the stories of Rapunzel and The Little Mermaid into her own unique tale. With this series, a character from one fairytale magically ends up in another fairytale world. Sometimes, the magical connection wasn't fully explained and left me wondering how it worked, however that is not the case with this story. I appreciated the workings of the portal and the fact that we came back to it at the end to see how it functioned. I really loved seeing Lyrielle's enthusiam for grass and the outdoors. That added some fun elements to the story. I also liked that Tavric wasn't a perfect prince, but actually rather hated his royal duties due to some social anxiety. That really helped him seem more real than the average storybook characters. The way Lyrielle helped Tavric with his anxiety was so sweet. Tavric tried not to need her because duty demanded a more suitable wife, which resulted in some ups and downs in the romance, but in the end, love prevailed as it always should.
Thanks to the author for providing me with an ARC. All opinions expressed in this review are my own.
4.5 stars. This was a cute read, and a very fun mash-up of fairy tales (Rapunzel + The Little Mermaid = two of my favorites).
The settings were vibrant and interesting, the characters felt real and like they were all living their own lives independent of the plot, and the main couple were good for each other. I'm not typically a fan of miscommunication in stories like this, but it didn't drag on and was done well. The romance did progress a bit too quickly for me -- there were a few times I stopped reading and wondered what I missed that made them fall head over heels so fast, haha -- but ultimately, I didn't mind too much. Had this been a bit longer of a story, I think that would have solved the issue for me.
One thing I really appreciated was the representation of the MC's sensory processing disorder and overstimulation. It didn't feel disingenuous, and I found it interesting to think about how it would affect duties I typically don't think twice about in fantasy books. I really liked the resolutions at the end -- not erasing the challenges, but working with them.
Overall, wholesome, creative, and fun to read. I enjoyed it!
