Lyrielle has one purpose in life—to heal others. About the author

I love words. I always have. In songs, in poems, in books, in movies—words move me. In my younger years, I dabbled in writing as a therapy and an escape, but I never expected it to become more than that. While deep in the depths of mommying several small children, I took seven years to write my first book, Just Ella. During that time, I taught myself how to write a novel through a whole lot of trial and error. Not the most time-efficient method, but it gave me an education I wouldn’t have received from a class or a how-to book. Something about the struggle of writing without a formula or rules worked for me. I wrote for me. I wrote from my heart space, and I think that’s the reason that Just Ella has found room in so many of my readers’ heart spaces.

I write clean romance because I love it. I love the discovery of new love. I love the relationship building that’s done with looks, words, brushing fingers, and tentative kisses. Jane Eyre is the hero of my youth and taught me that being true to yourself and clinging to your convictions will be hard, but it will bring you more genuine happiness than giving up on yourself ever can.

I am an extraordinarily happy wife, and a mother of five kids. I’ve lived in Utah, Arizona, Missouri, and Virginia, but my heart is now firmly ensconced in Idaho where we’ve built a home and a community.

I love chocolate, waterfalls, pretty teacups, the sight and sound of ocean waves, and most especially my husband and my five littles. I love books that leave me with a sigh of contentment, and I aspire to write stories that do the same for my readers.

Tangled Sails by Annette K. Larsen is the third and final ARC I signed up for in the upcoming Displaced Fairytales series. This book brings together the protagonists from "Rapunzel" and "The Little Mermaid" with a heavier focus on "Rapunzel." It is a heartwarming tale of healing, generosity, and personal growth. As the title implies, the book borrows some elements that are unique to the Disney version of the tale, but the worldbuilding and characters set it apart as an original take.

Lyrielle has been locked in a tower ever since her magic powers manifested when she was a child. Her aunt invited the local villagers to stand at the base of the tower any time they needed healing from her long, magical hair. One day, in an attempt to escape her captivity, she fell through a portal into the ocean of another realm, where she was rescued by a prince named Tavric, who was searching for a mermaid who once rescued him from drowning. In order to pull Lyrielle from a watery grave, Tavric is forced to cut her long hair, removing the source of her power. Now, she must rely on him for guidance on how to live an ordinary life in the outside world.

This book leans more heavily on "Rapunzel" than it does "The Little Mermaid." Though Tavric has a royal fiancée whom his parents want him to form an alliance with, she is never implied to be the woman involved with his near-drowning incident, and has little overall importance to the story. Instead, Tavric is immediately drawn to Lyrielle after learning about her imprisonment in the tower. He is determined to help her find the freedom she deserves now that she has escaped. Through Tavric, Lyrielle realizes how much she was mistreated and finally has an opportunity to heal.

Healing and selflessness are the two biggest themes of this story. Although Lyrielle is an expert at healing physical conditions, she spent most of her life unaware of the mental and emotional strain that this task caused for her. Tavic devotes himself to helping her heal as she, in turn, supports him with the strain of his royal duties and his sick father. These two characters are so selfless that they become needlessly concerned about being burdens on each other, and must learn to accept the kindness of others to become a healthy couple.

Tangled Sails is a heartfelt addition to the Displaced Fairytales series, weaving together elements of "Rapunzel" and "The Little Mermaid" into a beautiful tale of healing, growth, and love. Annette K. Larsen's unique world-building and lovable characters make for a relaxing read that's sure to leave you feeling uplifted.

This was an amazing book! I simply couldn’t not put it down. This no spice romantic fantasy is a fairy tale retelling mashup between Rapunzel and The Little Mermaid. I absolutely adore it! Lyri lost her parents at age 9 and after that she gained a gift of healing people through her hair. Her aunt sequestered her away in a tower and everyone came to be healed by her. All she was allowed to do was heal, sew, and read “approved” books. One day, after her aunt adamantly told her she’d never be allowed out and allowed to marry, she tried climbing down her tower but the weight of her hair was too much. She crashed…into the sea! Where Prince Tavric pulled her out and showed her what freedom and friendship looked like. This book has many twists and I’m not going to spoil them but I just couldn’t keep from turning these pages until the book was done. I didn’t want it to end! The romance is just kisses, intimacy level 1.

4⭐️ ARC Review: My second Rapunzel book, and I happened to have read my first one this month as well! Does that information matter? Not at all. But I can tell you that each book was completely its own story. Even though they are both spins on the original tale.

Bravo to all the authors who conjured up this series. What a fresh and exciting way to write retellings. Two stories mashed into one! This one was Rapunzel and Prince Eric.

To sum up how I feel about this book, I will say it was just so wholesome. There are definitely dark undertones, but their love story was so incredibly wholesome. I didn’t love anybody else in this book though. Maybe one of Tavric’s brothers but that’s it. So the main characters were what drove this story.

Other than the wholesomeness of this book, I can’t find any other words. That’s not a bad thing though. It’s unique, it’s sweet, you can’t help but love these characters. They were seriously so sweet. Tavric was so good to Lyrielle and Lyrielle was so innocent. Tavric teaches her to dance, and it was just kick your feet sweet. And she helps him with his sensory issues with her calming presence. They just worked so well together.

So all summed up, if you want a warm hug of a romance, this is the book. Unique, sweet, wholesome, tender, all the cute things.

Rapunzel + The Little Mermaid! This was a fun mixed retelling. I enjoyed spotting the different parts of the two stories in this book. I also always appreciate the neurodivergence representation (possible SPD for the prince) and love how Lyriel was able to be his calming space.
I am always here for a new book by Annette K. Larsen! She is an automatic read for me!

I love how Tavric & Lyri both felt so comfortable with each other & how she was able to calm him.

I really appreciate how having problems with sensory overload was shown & all the care & thought Lyri put into to helping to ease Tavric & how Tavric was so considerate of everything Lyri had been through & helped her to learn & heal.

I was really rooting for both characters especially, after everything that they had been through, so I loved seeing them find joy together & get their happy ending!

This has definitely become my favorite book by Annette K. Larsen! Such a sweet story of a friendship that turns into a couple who loves each other and only wants the very best for each other. I honestly look forward to reading it again.

This is exactly what I was expecting from this series concept: While escaping down the side of her tower, the Rapunzel character falls through a portal into the sea in the prince’s kingdom. The Little Mermaid portion is a very small part; this is mostly a Tangled Rapunzel retelling.

This book offers a thoughtful exploration of the sometimes delicate boundary between using someone and forming a genuine connection through mutual need and benefit. Lyri has been exploited all her life by people who ended up seeing her as a tool rather than a person, giving of herself often to complete strangers. Tavric comes to realize that she does something similar for him mentally and emotionally but doesn’t understand that, though he is right to be thoughtful about his motivations for spending time with her, people in good relationships inherently benefit from them, and when each gives willingly to the other and both appreciate the gift they are receiving, the connection will transcend any self-interest we all naturally have. Everyone wants to be — and is — needed. It’s when people are taken for granted and are sought out purely for personal benefit that it becomes self-serving.

I received an ARC copy of this book from the author and even though I wasn’t required to post a review I WANTED to offer my honest, voluntary impression upon finishing it.

Annette’s writing has always called to me- it’s like a siren’s song I suppose because I can always identify with the characters she writes about! It’s so easy to get caught up in a book when you enjoy it right from the outset and you don’t want to put it down until you’re finished and then it’s reluctantly because there is no more! That was the case with this story of Lyri and Tav!

Lyri is locked up in a tower by her aunt and uses her healing power she always has felt is in her hair so its never cut- also allowing her to let it down in a long braid so the people on the ground can touch it while she sings and heal them. However, after 10 years she wants to break free and see the world around her and not feel like she’s a prisoner!

One day she decides to escape but all her long hair falls at once as she’s trying to climb down from the tower and the weight causes her to lose her grip and she falls. However instead of landing on the hard ground and dying she lands in water and as luck would have it is spotted and is rescued but in so doing her long hair is cut to save her life. She thinks she has no magic to heat anyone now but later she finds that not to be the case.

She is rescued by a crown prince and after being isolated from being around people and land she revels in her freedom from the tower and is perplexed
because no one has heard of the land she came from.

The prince’s father is gravely ill and he is reluctant to take the crown but knows he must soon. Then she has an opportunity to see him and doing what she always has done in the past sings to him but holds his hands because her hair is cut and finds her magic is still there to heal him but due to her fear of being used like she has been she stretches it out but is caught by someone who she thinks is a friend but she is mistaken.

She feels an attraction towards the prince but a princess arrives to try and become his wife so she pulls away. However she still wants to heal the king so she does so but is captured again afterward by the person who was supposed to be a friend who has an agenda of his own. This leads to a chase by the prince to retrieve her leading them on a journey she doesn’t want to take.

This story has elements of two fairytales- Rapunzel and The Little Mermaid and I enjoyed seeing them mixed together resulting in this wonderful, captivating story of love, adventure, loss and regaining that love and love for life once again after events neither anticipated happening.

I wholeheartedly and enthusiastically recommend this story to everyone who loves fairytales and to urge those of you who think you’re too old to enjoy this genre now to come back and give it another chance! Fairytales have a magically quality that calls to us to read them no matter how old we may be! I’ve loved them for over 70 years and I still love the wonderful feeling I have as I read them and picture myself in the story where everything is taking place!

I can picture the angst our heroes face when they fight their inner doubts and demons as to what they should do based on what they believe and fear of breaking those bonds for something unknown but something they want to explore nonetheless!

I throughly enjoyed this book and am confident you will as well when you read it!

Wow! I have always loved Prince Eric and Rapunzel but I never considered how WELL they would go together! If you love The Little Mermaid and Tangled then check this book out!

Prince Tavric is expected to take over as king once his father passes, which is expected to be soon due to his failing health. Overwhelmed by the expectations he now faces, and the grief over the impending loss of his father, Tavric frequently escapes on the sea. As he searches for a mermaid who saved him after an unfortunate recent accident, he finds a mysterious young woman with unfathomably long hair dropped in the middle of the sea, and rescues her.

As Lyri and Tavric spend more time together, he begins to show her what life and friendship should be like while she helps to comfort him in the overwhelm of taking over the kingdom.

Lyri is so sweet and strong and I loved watching her come to understand her own worth OUTSIDE of her healing magic. Her care for others is inspiring and her love for life makes you want to frolic along a beach!

Tavric is also a very caring and strong person, putting aside his own overwhelming struggles in order to do what is best for his family and for his kingdom. It was nice to watch him grow to understand that his relationship Lyri is give and take and that he is not selfish for needing her in his life.

This was an absolutely fantastic no-spice fairytale retelling! The world-building was richly detailed, the characters were wonderful, and the twists shocked me! I loved the way the author wove The Little Mermaid and Rapunzel into a portal fantasy that blended together nicely. I enjoyed watching Lyri really find herself outside the confines of her aunt's tower, and how Prince Tav sees her worth even when she doesn't. I especially appreciated that the prince was neurodivergent, and how Lyri recognized and supported his anxiety. I highly recommend this for any fantasy reader! 

Lyrielle's hair is cherished by everyone in her village because when she sings it heals. Her aunt keeps her locked in a tower, not letting anyone get close, except to touch the ends of her hair for healings. When she finally gets the courage to escape out the window, she suddenly finds herself falling into an ocean, and being rescued by the handsome Prince Tavric. 
Prince Tav has been searching for the mermaid that saved him a month ago from drowning, but he didn't expect to find the beautiful girl with long flowing hair drowning in the middle of nowhere. Unfortunately, to save her from drowning he is forced to cut the hair that defined her life.
Lyri is welcomed into the royal family as a guest, and flourishes in her newfound freedom. Tav enjoys her company, but many responsibilities fall to him. While Tav struggles with the weight of his father's illness and mounting anxiety, he finds peace in Lyri's presence. Learning of her past, he vows to never let anyone use her again. With danger where they never expected, and the reality of the truth coming to light, they fight against all the odds stacked against them.

Tangled Sails is such a good story. I loved Lyrielle. She is such a sweetheart and so innocent to the world. A world she longs to see and be a part of. She is easily excited and loves to talk to people and learn things. She’s also very strong and determined when she has her mind set on something. We can see that in her escape from her tower.

As for Tavric he’s very quiet and introverted. Protective of those he cares for and willing to do what it takes to ensure their safety. So long as he doesn’t have to deal with crowds. (He makes do when he has to but the poor guy prefers the peacefulness of solitude.) Basically the exact opposite to Lyri. But I suppose that’s what makes them such a good couple. They even each other out and pull out each others best qualities.

Anyway when he finds her half drowned after her recent escape he is instantly drawn to this sweet innocent girl and takes her under his wing. He comes to rely on her for comfort in the chaos of his life (especially with his father not doing very well and him needing to take on more responsibilities.)
And she needs to learn, after years of being used and her power being abused by people she thought cared for her, what love and caring really is.

But what happens when the Tavric has a princess coming to possibly arrange a betrothal? When the kings life is on the line and Lyri might be able to help but is scared of people using her again?

This was a fun and sweet story! I loved how the author combined the stories of Rapunzel and The Little Mermaid into her own unique tale.
With this series, a character from one fairytale magically ends up in another fairytale world. Sometimes, the magical connection wasn't fully explained and left me wondering how it worked, however that is not the case with this story. I appreciated the workings of the portal and the fact that we came back to it at the end to see how it functioned.
I really loved seeing Lyrielle's enthusiam for grass and the outdoors. That added some fun elements to the story. I also liked that Tavric wasn't a perfect prince, but actually rather hated his royal duties due to some social anxiety. That really helped him seem more real than the average storybook characters.
The way Lyrielle helped Tavric with his anxiety was so sweet. Tavric tried not to need her because duty demanded a more suitable wife, which resulted in some ups and downs in the romance, but in the end, love prevailed as it always should.

I don't care how "unrealistic" a fairytale story is, Annette K Larsen writes TRUE love, and I believe she is one of the top queens of swoon in this genre.

I also think the author did a great job representing sensory overload struggles, or possibly neurodivergence. As usual, I also love this author's family-centred values evident in her stories.

This is not a criticism of this lovely book, but I will say it didn't really feel like a mashup of The Little Mermaid with Rapunzel to me. Rapunzel yes definitely!! I would call it a retelling of Rapunzel with a nod to the Little Mermaid vibes, plus a nod or homage to D!sney's version of Rapunzel. (However, when you see it as Rapunzel with Prince Eric and imagine if Rapunzel had shown up in his life instead of Ariel, then it makes more sense and you don't really need a little mermaid story.)

I am also left wondering if there is more to the story of Branfrie!

This story is so sweet, like for realz, the feelings, the grit, the trials, the heroics, the healing, the friendship, all of it was SO SWEET.
I was immediately immersed into the world and now must know what happened to the story's "little mermaid" so will definitely have to read her story soon. I was skeptical of such a mash-up but now I feel silly for such because it was such a perfect pairing, Lyri and Tavric were perfect for one another, balancing each other without taking advantage and not for their bodies, but for their hearts and personalities. Appreciate that! I won't give all the details or CW since an ARC, DM me if you want CW.

A fun and creative mash up! This story is based off of The Little Mermaid and Rapunzel. It’s a great mix and an original story! So many twists and turns in the story that kept it interesting.

The combining of the two worlds was flawless and worked really well. If you haven’t read either of the fairy tales you would still be able to understand what’s going on.

I really enjoyed the main characters and the dual POV. This no spice story has plenty of romance and swoony moments. Each of the main characters arcs are interesting and well done. I was very interested in their stories. It was very well done!

What a fun retelling of two fairytales that I love! "Rapunzel" and "The Little Mermaid" blend beautifully in this story. I love how caring an compassionate Lyri and Tavric are. Both are exceptional characters and I loved watching them grow. Getting a peak inside someone with sensory issues is a refreshing take. It was enlightening and helped me develop new empathy for that situation. I love how selfless both Lyri and Tavric are. I hope some of the supporting characters get their own story at some point.

I could not read this story fast enough. I so enjoyed Tavric and Lyrielle’s story, the pace was great and the storyline flowed very well together. I love a happy ever after and was well pleased with this ending. I enjoyed the family dynamics as well. I absolutely adore reading books that don’t contain spice, have a decided lack of cursing, and is overall wholesome for the soul and this story checked all those boxes. I look forward to reading more from Ms. Annette!

How fun! I love this author’s work. This story is whimsical, a twist/retelling of Rampunzel with a little bit of The Little Mermaid thrown in. It’s completely unique, clean, and appropriate for a wide range of ages. It definitely took me on an adventure of imagination and imagery, into a magical world. It was a great escape and a very enjoyable read. I definitely recommend it!

This clean fairytale mix up was amazing! It had magic, suspense, and clean romance! I loved how the two main characters tried to honor each other even when it hurt… and I loved how they communicated and solved their problems once they realized that they were better together! Oh this book was so much fun! I loved every minute of it. I was stuck in a mechanics office for 5 hours and was very entertained by the book the whole time. I love the magic, the characters, the story line. All of it works sooo well! There is also neurodivergent representation en it& et is done well. You have the MMC that is neurodivergent and 1 of his brothers knows his body language so well to be able understand his feelings & see the pain he’s in. Then there's another brother that's completely oblivious I rude about it. Great representation. For all you Rapunzel & little mermaid fans you need to read this book.

I really enjoyed this little mermaid and tangled mashup. I loved the characters and seeing them become friends and fall in love. Both characters needed each other and found healing and hope together. The last few chapters had me on the edge of my seat and I didn’t want to put it down.

When a gift (in this case magical healing) becomes a commodity, used to benefit others but at the cost of consent and freedom, it becomes slavery. I loved how Tav valued Lyrielle, for who she was, not for what she could do. Good clean story.

All the feelings and emotions in this book!! 😢😢😢
I love how they both see the other one struggle and wants to help them. Tavric doesn't want to use Lyri like she is used to. Lyri see Tavric struggle in his role and can just give him a small smile. I love their little get-aways to the garden and beach.❤️
I love the slow burn between them😍
