Gods in the Gutter

Nemesis in Love by Marie K. Savage transports us into a grim, near-future dystopia where the foundations of modern society—democracy, freedom, and human rights—have been systematically dismantled. In this new world order, the President is merely a figurehead; the true architect of oppression is Harold Jensen, a man who single-handedly dictates the fate of the remaining citizens.

In this landscape of total control, only those with significant resources dare to dream of rebellion. Among them is Cy Bigelow, who finds himself on the brink of death just as the goddess Nemesis is alerted to his plight. Her intervention triggers a monumental shift: gods, goddesses, and demigods step into the mortal realm, lending their "almighty resources" to Cy and his allies in a desperate bid to restore the natural order.

To be honest, despite the intriguing addition of mythological and fantastic elements, I am conflicted about this book. I found the first act to be quite annoying and slow-moving; however, once you push past that initial stage, the narrative flow improves significantly and the story begins to find its rhythm.

While this is the first installment of a planned trilogy, the rocky start has left me uncertain. I’m not entirely sure I’m invested enough to see how the rest of this series unfolds. It’s a unique premise, but the execution in the beginning makes it a difficult commitment.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Set only a few years from now, this novel imagines a fascist new America where deportations, segregation and work camps have become reality. The intent seems to be: a reckoning with today’s politics and a warning of a potential future development.
To me the execution opens with a substantial info dump and felt repetitive, weaving many historical parallels together with a full Greek pantheon of gods and their offspring in a way that felt sometimes more forced than cohesive.

By the 25% mark, the point is made—repeatedly. Personally I didn’t like the MMC’s lingering marriage (even if platonic).
Romance-wise, it’s insta-love with no real tension and emotional depths.

Around the half something shifted, it got way better: faster, more engaging, and less didactic.

A solid 3-star read with potential, a set-up for the sequels to come, which will hopefully answer all those open questions.

📚 Nemesis in Love

✨ The Pantheon League #1

🖤 One phrase: vengeance goddess chaos with mortal man chemistry.

This sounds like such a fun, bigger than life setup. An immortal goddess of vengeance teaming up with a human man who is trying to protect his land, his people, and everything he has rebuilt? Yeah, I’m immediately intrigued. What makes this one stand out is the blend of mythology, romance, and political stakes. It feels like gods crashing headfirst into human mess, and I do love when divine beings have to get their hands dirty.

My favorite part already is the Nemesis and Cy pairing. A goddess of retribution and a human man with a target on his back sounds like the kind of duo that could be intense, chaotic, and weirdly perfect together.

✨ Tropes & vibes
⚡ goddess heroine
🖤 vengeance and justice
🏛️ mythology inspired romance
🔥 powerful woman x determined human man
👑 political danger
⚔️ heroes against corruption

📖 Read this if you like
✨ mythological romance
🖤 gods in modern chaos
⚔️ high stakes good versus evil
🔥 couples thrown into danger together

Nemesis showing up to balance the scales and ruin evil men’s day? I support her completely.

I love a good mythology retelling, so when Nemesis in Love came my way, I was really curious to see how these characters would fit into a more modern world.

This story follows Cyrus and Nemesis, and the journey of Cyrus discovering that he’s actually a demigod. Watching that realization unfold and seeing how his friendships and relationships evolve because of it was one of the parts I enjoyed most. I also really liked the mythology elements and the way the gods were woven into the story.

👉But I’ll be honest… this one was a little harder for me to get into.

The world felt very close to the one we’re currently living in, with a lot of parallels to the conflicts and tensions happening around us right now. And while I know some readers enjoy stories that mirror real-world issues, I tend to read as a form of escape so that element made it a bit tougher for me to fully settle into the story.

That said, I can absolutely see this working for other readers.

While this one ultimately wasn’t my cup of tea, I’m grateful for the chance to read it early and experience Cyrus and Nemesis’s story.

Nemesis in Love

Rating: 2

A unique take on the Greek gods being involved in the human world and being the influence on all religions. It focuses on Nemesis, a member of the Pantheon League who are desperately trying to support humanity to make the right decisions.

Nemesis is drawn to Cy, a demigod who is working with the resistance movement against the current dictatorship in place and is in desperate need of help. The relationship is very instalove, with Cy going between ‘but she is a goddess’ to ‘but she is hot’ every couple of minutes.

This tale talks a lot about America, the risk of a tyrannical ruler who is going to over throw the country with a rhetoric of anger and hatred, and cause progress on things we take for granted, such as marriage equality, being able to freely love who you want, redacting access to basic health care such as immunisations and abortion. It cut scarily close to the current truth that is going on at this time, hopefully the Pantheon League can get involved?

Thank you NetGalley for an ARC copy of this book in exchange for the following honest review:

I genuinely enjoyed the premise of this story - as a Greek mythology geek I will also give anything a shot that has those themes.

Truthfully, I may have read this book at potentially the worst time, considering the state of the world and it’s been hitting me hard. Reading about all the awful stuff the government is doing in this book, and having it repeated so often in the first half of this book was just really hard for me to get through.

I do appreciate that things picked up later in the story, but found myself struggling to connect to the characters and the plot. The constant POV shifts were dizzying and I found myself having to re-read sections to make sure I was understanding the scene and characters.

A solid 3 ⭐️ book with plenty of potential - I’m interested to see what this author does with the other tee’d up couples.

Nemesis in Love is a mythological retelling following Cyrus and Nemesis, leading to Cyrus discovering that he is demigod. The way the world they were in felt so close to our own reality with a lot of parallels to conflicts and tension that were currently dealing with did have me realizing that my way of reading is completely different to the way of others. I can see the dystopian appeal for others though, it just wasn’t too much of an interesting topic for myself.
The plot involved a lot of information on the world building, the political system of the universe, and then the tyranny that forms in the universe. Things unfolds around him, the friendships, the relationships, and the evolution that was revolving around them. I loved the use of myths, the way gods were involved in the story as well. Though the story itself did take a moment to get into.

At the core of this book we have gods and we have humans. Parts of them are trying to navigate the current state of the world that they are living in a dystopian society that realistically is not that far off from our current time.

In this book, we find that the political climate is not necessarily run by the president or the government but one man who wants to dictate how society and the people within it should be.

I love how the undertones of Greek mythology were intertwined into the story. I would say the beginning was a little slow for me to get into it but a little over halfway, it picked up, and I really enjoyed the latter part. This was a 3.75 to a 4 star read for me. This was merely due to the fact that I feel like the story could have had a little more depth to it and it took a while to really catch my attention.

Suspense - 3.5/5 🤯🤯🤯

While this is a love story, this is not a book I would have normally read for myself, but stepped out of my box and gave it ago. This book is a mix of current government setup, with a mixture of Christianity, Greek Mythology and dystopia mixed in. Though this book is only set a few 10ish years into the future. This book leaves me thinking about our History and how it brings to life things we do not think about. I am not saying this in a bad way, but I do ask that when you read this book have an open mind. I did really like this book and plan to read Marie K. Savage’s next book as it just really struck a cord with my soul. Thank you Marie for letting me read this book.

Dystopian future meets gods and goddesses

Nemesis in Love follows Nemesis (a goddess) and a ragtag bunch of humans including our main character Cy Bigelow. The setting is “New America” where fascism rules and the little guy loses. The Chancellor of New America wants Cy out of the way. And what follows is a story about unlikely heroes and how far you would go to save the ones you love.

This book is full of dark humor and funny banter! However it was a sobering look at what could happen down the road with any country (and why we would need heroes). It was a bit confusing at times with the narrator using first person? But it didn’t really take me out of the story too much.

Overall it was an interesting read, and it’ll be fun to see where it goes in the series in future books!

I love a good mythological retelling but this one was a struggle.

The writing was good and the story wasn’t bad either, my issue was with how closely it felt to following our real world problems we are currently experiencing.

I enjoy reading to escape the stressors of modern life and reading this story pulled me in, but pulled me in to a world that was basically the same as we are all living in.

I also felt like many of the issues brought up seems like the author felt the need to check certain boxes and it left the story feeling disjointed and it didn’t flow organically.

I can see that some readers would enjoy this type of story, it just was t was I was looking for or what I generally like to read.

Overall 3/5

-I really wanted to enjoy this book. From Greek Mythology, to the dipping into the dystopian genre and the romance, I truly thought this would be the right book for me. Unfortunately it didn’t really hit the for me. It wasn’t necessarily bad for me, but I felt like there were a few plot holes or more of the main plot line being put to the side to make place for character development. I felt like the actually story was just brushed off in many scenes.

-Nemi was a very interesting character. I liked seeing her in action but at times it felt like she was very different people. Not meaning when she was Alex or Hallie but personality wise. I wished it was all a bit more coherent and developed. I didn’t feel particularly attached to Cy, similarly, I felt like he lacked a little depth, but that’s just me. And the romance was often all and then nothing but there were cute at times, and then suddenly together.

-The book did start to get more action towards the end of the book which was appreciated, but I still like we were kind of off from the the initial storyline. I feel like there would be potential for sequels but I don’t know if I’d read them.

✨ARC Review✨

Although this was a good take on Greek Gods set in the future with a lot of political turmoil and corruption, I found I had to force myself to finish this.

It started off a bit slow with a lot of information, but once I hit the halfway mark things started to amp and get quite interesting and fast paced.
It has a lot of corruption and drama involving the political world in America, and also with the Gods and how they are involved.

A decent read, I just found the romance and story a bit lacking.

This book just wasn’t for me. I normally always love Greek Gods retellings but that wasn’t the case with this one. I couldn’t get an emotional connection with the characters and the writing style felt a little too clinical to me. It was an interesting take though with them in a dystopian world. I think this may appeal more to fans of science fiction where as I had been expecting more of a romantasy.

This was a very nice surprise for me, I really enjoyed the construction of the world being a dystopian America, and how the Gods and humans were dealing with each other

The banter in this story was so good and I really enjoyed that the main characters were literally Forbbiden for each other 🙂‍↔️ there were some things that I hope will be answered in the next stories but overall it was a really good book ✨

I really wanted to love this because the premise looked cool. Greek mythology in a modern setting with a dystopian edge sounded perfect for me.

Unfortunately, this one just didn’t fully pull me in. I had a hard time getting into it, and while it picked up a bit later, I never felt fully invested in the story or the romance.

I’m glad I gave it a shot, even if it wasn’t quite the right fit for me.

Thank you to the author for the ARC opportunity!
