A pro on the ice, a rookie with fatherhood, a screw-up with love—and one shot at redemption.
Pro hockey’s my life, but I’m blowing it with the Boise Trout this season. I have to get my shit together on the ice and off, but when the police inform me that Rosie, my college sweetheart, died suddenly and left me Eli, my nine-year-old son I didn’t even know existed, I have bigger problems.
Worse, this kid is quick to tell me how much I suck.
So yeah, this is going to be great.
Desperate to get Eli to warm up to me, I reach out to Zoe, a past hookup and a local news producer from my hometown of Dickens, Idaho. Despite me ghosting her, she leaps into action, helping bridge the chasm between me and Eli. As she spends time and connects with my brilliant son, showing him the ropes in newscasting, I can’t help but admire her more than I already did. She’s a total badass with her career, life, and enormous heart.
Meanwhile, I’m trying to balance being an insta-father with extra hockey practices so the Trout don’t end my contract.
Then there are those nagging, frustratingly intense feelings for Zoe, who challenges me in ways I never expected. And dammit, things escalated quickly with us between the sheets. How could it not? She’s a goddess in every way.
The family I always wanted could be within reach, but if I don’t face my demons and pull my head out of my ass, I’m going to be cut off for good.

*Cut Off is a witty, heartfelt stand-alone rom com with adult language and steamy, open-door chemistry that will have you rooting for a happily-ever-after.
Award-winning author of romantic comedies, Terra Weiss brings heart, humor, and happy endings to each of her books. She grew up in a small town in Idaho, but now lives in Atlanta with her mad scientist husband, wacky and wonderful mother, spunky daughter, and the feral ten-pound dogs who run her house. She enjoys jogging at a snail's pace, reading, and piling bright orange mountains of squeezy cheese on her crackers.
This book was incredibly quick to grab your attention. She didn’t waste any time getting to the nitty gritty when Eli arrives in chapter one. You pretty much instantly fall in love with Jonah and Zoe (the spice, the tension, the humor!!) but the real one you’re hoping gets a happily ever after is Eli ⚡️ I loved this little guy, and how the three of them became a family, the most. It was a roller coaster of emotions as Jonah and Eli figured out how to have a father/son relationship, with Zoe holding space to be each of their safe places.
I absolutely intend to go back read the other two books in the series!
I was lucky enough to get to red this as an arc and to be honest the hockey part of the story pulled me in, but Johan and Eli the love he has for his son after finding out 9 years later about him pulled me the rest of the way in and pulled at my heart strings!! I laughed, cried and went straight to add the rest of her books to my tbr
I was surprised how much I enjoyed this book. There are lots of single dads being given babies they’ve fathered, but not many older children.
Jonah is a struggling NHL player who recently transferred to Trout and isn’t dealing with this well.
Enter Eli, a child who has recently lost his mother, Rosie, who broke Jonah’s heart when she left him 10 years ago. Despite not telling Jonah he was a father, she named him as guardian in her will.
Zoe is his sister's best friend, and she is told Jonah has been escorted to the police station. Sensing a story for her news station, she finds that Jonah is meeting a small child. On hearing the story, she leaves and tells her boss and the news reader that there is no story. Unfortunately, the newsreader and her boss have an insider who says they are going to publish the story without the full information, and they don't care. Arguing with them, saying they need to interview Jonah, they disagree, and she ends up fired.
Her podcast releases Jonah's interview and agrees to nanny for him. When he gets temporary custody of Eli, there is a lot of emotional trauma that is treated with empathy in the writing.
Rosie's mother petitions for custody of Eli, Jonah and Zoe have to fight, especially when Eli is picked up from school by his grandmother. When Jonah goes to her house, he says things that will have consequences.
Zoe gets offered he dream job and leaves, getting her sister to nanny. Jonah is spending nearly all his time at the rink while waiting to get Eli back, as his grandmother has a temporary custody order.
His family lawyer finds all sorts of interesting information on Eli's grandmother, and Zoe acts as a character witness.
After a triumphant hockey match, they soon get their HEA
This was a rollercoaster of emotions, but a great read.
I LOVE Terra’s Beaver County series. I’ve had the absolute joy of ARC reading since the beginning of the series, and each one hits as a different interconnected story.
I adored the complex characters, and the difficult situations they each found themselves in. And Eli, sweet sweet boy. He has a tender loving heart, and such a big brain - i adored meeting him. Eli, Jonah’s long lost son wasn’t a side character, but a core part of the story, and the family dynamic built in the book. It was beautifully done.
The chemistry, and emotional build up of Jonah and Zoe’s story was perfect. (Although i did want to smack both of them silly at one point!) I loved how Jonah showed up for Zoe, both quietly and loudly. I loved how Zoe showed up for both of the boys. A big part of relationships is showing up, even when it’s hard. Even when you gain nothing, but the knowledge that you were there. Their relationship, and family dynamic had that in spades.
If you aren’t new to the series, you’ll also see several characters from the past (including the BEAVERS!)
In this you’ll find the heart, heat, and happy ending that I have come to associate with this series. You’ll also find: Sports romance Hockey player Single dad x nanny Boss x employee Sisters BFF Forced Proximity Small town romance HE FALLS FIRST Anger management
Jonah is jumping many life hurdles that seem to come from all sides. In college he was a NHL candidate, but was in a deep relationship with a girl named Rosie. She made the decision for him and vanished, ghosting him completely. He played one position and wound up not only being traded to his home town team, but on a totally different position. Struggling to reach success seems difficult. One day an officer of children's services strolls up to him with a nine year old boy. His mom was killed in an accident and her wish was to bring him to his father. "Father?" He looks down at the boy who, buy the way exactly like Jonah. Zoe is best friends with Jonah's sister since childhood. Hanging at the police department to get a scoop, she witnesses the arrival of Eli, Jonah's son. Being assistant station manager she knows she should report on this. She decides that the story can hold a few days until Jonah and Eli get settled in. No such luck! Word gets back to the manager and she is given a choice, Tell all or be fired. She took the later. I enjoyed the growth all characters in this story as a new life for Jonah, Eli and Zoe grows. Heartfelt and feel good stories are always enjoyable, especially as relationship bonds grow.
This was such a cute hockey romance! Although it’s part of a series, it works well as a standalone. Cut Off is about so much more than hockey. It’s about family, found family, love, and careers. The banter in this story kept me hooked the entire way through.
Jonah unexpectedly finds out he has a 9 year old son who is placed in his care after a tragedy. He struggles to balance his demanding career with his son Eli, who is upset and confused after losing his mom. Jonah turns to his sister’s friend Zoe for help. Eli and Zoe bond almost immediately, so Jonah hires Zoe temporarily to be his live-in nanny. It doesn’t take long for sparks to fly between the hot couple.
The way Jonah and Zoe come together to help Eli adjust with his new reality is so touching. There are so many moments that really moved me. Recommend for fans of sport romances and those who enjoy a feel-good story.
If you are in a sports romance season, Cut Off should have a place on your bookshelf.
TLDR; hockey player doesn’t know he’s a father and is suddenly raising a grieving preteen. He calls in the help of an old almost flame and you’ve got the makings of a steamy rom-com.
Cut Off is part of the Beaver County world, but can be read as a stand alone. I have not read the other Beaver County books (yet!) but I did not feel lost at all.
Cut Off was a good time read, and I can’t wait to read more from Terra Weiss in the future.
Thank you Terra for gifting me an ARC to read early and review. I really enjoyed stepping into Beaver County and getting to know Jonah and Zoe.
The way Terra Weiss writes and the description of the characters and their feelings towards each other just absolutely suck me in! I immediately got wrapped up into Jonah's current situation and getting told about Eli. It's always so touching and amazing to read a dad stepping up! And then here comes Zoe helping make things so much easier on him - helping where she can with Eli and in turn FALLING FOR Jonah, of course. The hits for Jonah just keep on coming and I found myself so mad and frustrated for him. I would highly recommend this book - this entire series really. The plot in all of the books are amazing and the spice is spot on. Thank you so much to Terra for the early copy of this book!
Thank you so much Terra for trusting me with this ARC! We start from page 1 and automatically are thrown into the world of Beaver County again and the way Terra writes, it’s like you’re reading a rom com with the vibes of a TV show like Hart of Dixie.
This book was so much more than just about a sports romance. It’s about grief, trying to be the best parent you can be, dealing with the unexpected, and finding your special place in someone’s life.
My favorite quote: “If she killed me, I’d say thank you.” 🤪
It started off with a emotional punch that had me hooked right away. We see Zoey Lane again and her best friends brother, Jonah. The circumstances end up with her fired and him in need of a nanny. The interactions between them and the journey with Eli is so heart felt. The slow burn between Zoey and Jonah until its fast and spicy!
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Cut Off — Book 3 in the series by Terra Weiss Honestly? These books have become my ultimate guilty pleasure, and Cut Off is no exception. It's a light, breezy read packed with warm, spicy, and genuinely thoughtful moments — everything you could want from a romcom.
What sets this series apart, though, is that each book isn't afraid to go a little deeper. Terra Weiss weaves in heavy themes — the loss of a sister and friend, the shadow of a life-threatening illness, family obligations and the weight of expectations — and handles them with real care and sensitivity. It's that balance of heart and levity that keeps me coming back.
One thing that often frustrates me in series is when it feels like the author loses interest and rushes through the final books — but Terra Weiss does the exact opposite. Every installment is clearly thought through, and Cut Off is no different.
What might throw some readers off, though, is that the love between the FMC and MMC can feel understated at times. That's not a writing misstep — it's actually a reflection of who these characters are. The MMC consistently puts his son's feelings first, and both leads take their time getting out of their own way. If you're expecting a big, all-consuming passion from the start, you might mistake their restraint for a lack of chemistry. But sit with it, and you'll see it for what it is: two people choosing each other carefully and intentionally. It wraps up beautifully!
If you love light romcoms that quietly tackle real, meaningful topics without losing their warmth and charm, this series deserves a spot on your shelf.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Cut Off by Terra Weiss Beaver County Series-Book 2
Jonah’s world flips overnight when he finds out he has a son he never knew about and watching him step up as a single dad while struggling on and off the ice was everything. His growth, his heart, you can’t help but root for him and Eli.
This was such an enjoyable, cozy but-spicy read with emotional depth touching on real life challenges of single parenthood, grief, and starting over.
Zoe was a standout for me. She was a total badass with her broadcasting career and her podcast “Zoe Knows” (obsessed… you know I love a podcast moment). The way she showed up for Jonah and Eli was perfection and shows she has a good heart.
THE CHEMISTRY was perfection too. The slow build to that first kiss from tension to desperation, it was so worth it. I was rooting for them the whole time.
Eli wasn’t just a side character; he was such a core part of the story. Sweet, real, and resilient after everything he’s been through. The dynamic between all three of them felt so genuine and full of love.
Zoe and Maddie’s relationship was so nice to see, their sister bond really stood out. It also felt like there’s more to Maddie’s story, and I’d love to see a future book exploring what happens to her after the breakup.
I loved seeing familiar faces like Floyd and Fiona made this even better. I loved that they showed up again, and that ending twist they gave us was such a fun surprise.
If you love small town, hockey romances with heart, humor, and found family vibes, this series is a must: • Send Off (Prequel) • Fake Off (Book 1) • Cut Off (Book 2)
Thank you, Terra Weiss, for the ARC! I’ve loved this series from the start ! This was a 5-star read for me!
Calling all hockey romance fans - I just found your next read for you. Terra Weiss nailed this book, and I am dying for more! Book Two of her Beaver County series, Cut Off is a beautifully written story of a Jonah Holt, a hockey star traded to a new team with a new defensive line position to play after playing offense his whole hockey career. He's struggling to get his head in the game, but there's another struggle looming he didn't see coming. He's actually a dad! His ex-girlfriend from years past dies in a car accident, leaving behind a 9-year-old boy, Eli. As he's called down to the police station for more information, a news reporter, Zoe Lane, is called down to see what she can dig up for breaking news. Jonah is the brother of her BFF, Sydney, so putting all reporter hats aside, she chooses not to relay the story, costing her job. Have no fear, there's a solution as Jonah needs help to make ends meet while waiting for Eli to be taken out of the foster system and into his arms. Enter Zoe to help these two awkward boys to become family. Tara really captured the emotion behind her writing - there were so many heart wrenching twists and turns that I couldn't stop reading, hoping for a happy ending for father and son. Whether you're a parent or not, you feel the angst behind Jonah's longing to embrace fatherhood, Eli's desire to not disappoint or get in the way and Zoe's need to help in any way she can but also protecting her peace. Feel good vibes all the way with some heart tugs, swoon worthy kisses and small-town charm mixed in. I won't tell you if that happens or not as you'll have to read for yourself. Easily a 5 star read for me. I will be going back to book one soon!
Cut Off wrecked me in the best possible way. I came for the hockey. I stayed for Jonah and his son, and I ugly-cried my way through the last 20% with zero regrets.
Let's talk about that father-son relationship first, because WOW. Watching Jonah go from cocky pro on the ice to a stumbling, flatfooted, but deeply in love with his child father was both hilarious and heartbreaking. Terra writes their bond with such tenderness — the fumbles, the breakthroughs, the quiet moments that hit harder than any big dramatic scene. I was rooting for these two just as hard as I was rooting for the romance, and that's saying something.
And the romance. JONAH AND ZOE. The chemistry between hit on all cylinders. Their slow-burn push and pull felt earned, layered with all the emotional baggage and chaos of a man figuring out how to be a dad while also falling completely in love. Zoe holds her own too. She's not just a love interest. She comes locked and loaded with badassery and grounds Jonah in a way that makes you flip the pages.
Watching Jonah and Zoe come together as a family, not just as a couple, checked all the emotional payoff boxes and then some.
If you've been reading the Beaver County Series, you already know what to expect: tears, laughs, warmth, amazing characters, and an HEA that delivers.
I'm totally in on this series. Can't wait for Burn Off!
So it's been a hot minute since I spent time with the characters in Beaver County, and I forgot (not really) about the addictive nature of this series. I sat down to read a couple chapters and found myself at the epilog before I knew it, so plan your time!
This surprised single dad hockey storyline has everything we love about this author's works, and it is full of emotions.
I appreciated the ways this event changed Jonah's direction and how he stepped up. Zoe is everything we want her to be, for both Eli and Jonah, but also they're everything she needs.
I laughed at the ridiculously clueless things Jonah didn't know, got teary at the battle over Eli, and very much enjoyed the steamy chemistry and sizzling scenes between this couple. I love connecting with a story like that, and really enjoyed the read.
(Oh, and I absolutely wanted to slap Gwen... you'll see, and you will too. *wink*)
I absolutely recommend reading in order for the best experience, but you can begin here if needed, and go back for more.
Once done here, visit the catalog of this author for more unforgettable characters. Worth your time, IMO.
Fortunate to have received an ARC of this book (thank you) I happily leave my thoughts.
💜 🏒 ARC Review🏒💜 Cut Off (Beaver County Bk. 3) By Terra Weiss Available 5/30 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Listen, if a book combines a grumpy hockey player getting absolutely roasted by his secret kid and a badass heroine who refuses to take his ghosting nonsense, I am legally obligated to be obsessed. Cut Off is a total masterclass in how to get a man to pull his head out of his ass, and we love that.
Jonah is a total pro on the ice, but a complete rookie at parenting. Watching him get humbled by a kid who openly tells him he sucks. 🤌 Zoe is a saint, a genius, and a total goddess. She helps him with the kid despite his past text-ghosting crimes, and honestly, he doesn't deserve her but watching him grovel and fall first is pure joy. Forced proximity, small-town gossip, found-family sweetness, and open-door spice that will absolutely require a cold shower. Once you pry your fingers off your pearls from clutching them. Terra has done it again. But let’s be so for real, did we expect anything less? I think not. I have absolutely loved the Beaver County series. It’s just what my heart needed.
✨Thank you so much to Terra Weiss for letting me ARC read this book for you! ✨
Jonah is a newly traded Defenseman who gets his world blown apart by learning his ex not only left him, but left him while she was pregnant. He finds out he is a father, to 9 year old Eli, due to her passing. The things Jonah does to try to get Eli's trust just keep pulling at your heartstrings and despite his grumpy exterior his heart is in the right place.
Zoe is on the verge of getting her big break when she sees our hockey player at the police station, but chooses her morals over her job leading her right into a position nannying for Jonah and yep you guessed it living with him and Eli. Zoe and Eli hit it off right away and he is so funny and such a brilliant kiddo.
The relationship between the 3 of them and how they navigate the grief of him losing his mom, Jonah having a super off year, and Zoe piecing her life together after losing her job and the temptation of Jonah around every corner will make you laugh, cry, and swoon.
I really enjoyed this read and the lounge scene was 🥵
Emotional Rollercoaster with Laughs, Tears and Pages That Keep Turning!
Wow - I picked this up and didn't put it down because there was so much going on and I got emotionally involved in the story - always the sign of a great book. The story is told via dual POV so the reader understands Jonah's desire to do everything right for Eli, but also how completely lost he feels going about it. Thankfully, Zoe is there with the knowledge and seems to relate to Eli right away. Add in their sparks, feelings for each other?, touching scenes with Eli, and of course the plot twist custody battles and the pages kept turning and the heartstrings were tugged, I genuinely liked the main characters, their families (except for evil Gwen!) and their growth throughout the book. It is part of a series but is easily read as a standalone novel although I can't wait for the next book in the series - Enjoy!
I was sent an ARC by the author and I am voluntarily leaving my honest review.
Cut off by Terra Weiss was SO good! 🏒⛸️🩷I applied to read this ARC because it’s a hockey romance, but I stayed for the good writing, the plot, and most importantly the father/son relationship. I loved the character development and watching Eli begin to trust Jonah, and I also loved that Eli wasn’t just exactly like Jonah with all the same interests. He likes chess and reading and his dad likes hockey! I also loved Jonah’s sense of responsibility to not only his son but his team too- I think that was a big part of what pulled at my heart so much. I don’t want to spoil the ending, but there is a part where something really great happens and I just wanted to cry tears of joy for Eli and Jonah🩷🩷 This was such a wonderful read. Thank you to Terra Weiss and her team for giving me the opportunity to read this as an ARC! Now I just have to read the read the rest of the series!
My thoughts: What a heartwarming story about a hockey player, Jonah, that becomes an instant dad to a 9-year old son, Eli, he never knew about. When he needs help, his sister’s best friend, Zoe, helps him out. Cut Off was a very emotional story that had me crying more than a few times. The banter between the characters brought a lightness to the story.
💚Forced proximity ❤️Sisters best friend 💙Found family 🧡Laugh out loud 🤎Small town 🩵Single dad/Hockey player 💛Cute 9-year old boy 🩷Badass news producer heroine 🩶Steamy/Spicy 💚Grumpy/Sunshine
This is the first book I have read by author Terra Weiss. I enjoyed her writing style and pacing of the story. I am looking forward to reading more books from her.
Loved this book! The relationship between Zoe and Jonah was great, but the father-son relationship between Jonah and Eli was absolutely priceless. I absolutely loved seeing how Jonah stepped up to be the father Eli needed and I was happy to see how Zoe helped make Eli comfortable in his new surroundings the first few days.
If you're looking for a feel good hockey romance to add to your TBR, Cut Off and the rest of the Beaver County series are books you should add to your TBR. Highly recommend Cut Off to readers who enjoy romances that feature a single dad, sister's best friend, nanny arrangement, forced proximity, and open door intimacy.
Thank you to the author for the review copy. All opinions are my own.
Becoming An Instant Dad Police on his doorstep. With a devastating message: Jonah’s ex, who had disappeared on him ten years ago with a short note, has died and left him with his nine years old son. As a professional NHL player, how is he supposed to give Eli the home he needs? His sister’s best friend jumps in. An heart breaking and inspiring story about becoming an instant dad with help from a woman who will become very important in their lives. A wonderful multi-faceted romance with charismatic characters and the odd nasty person causing havoc. Loved it! I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This charming and touching book tells the story of a single father who unexpectedly learns he has a son after nine years. He embarks on a journey to embrace fatherhood while also honing his skills as a hockey player with his new team.
The narrative provides a delightful and soothing reading experience, culminating in a happily-ever-after conclusion. I found myself captivated by the story throughout the day, able to put it down and easily pick it up again without any hassle.
I admire how Zoe remained committed to the story, helping him forge a connection with his son.
Thank you for this amazing opportunity to read the eARC, and I am happy to provide my honest review in return.
This one will tug at your heartstrings and get you all up in your feels. Wow! I have no notes. How did I miss reading Terra’s work before this?
This novel has all the tropes that I love: ❤️ Sister’s Best Friend ⭐️ Small Town ❤️ Single dad/ Instant Dad ⭐️ Forced proximity
This was my first time reading this author’s work and I thoroughly enjoyed the read. So much so that I’m going to go back and read the first 2 books in the series although you don’t need to read them to follow Cut Off.
The story is captivating—has you rooting for Jonah and Eli and the relationship of father and son to develop. ❤️ Loved it!
Just delightful! Jonah becomes a dad overnight to a sweet 9 year old boy. Knowing nothing about being a parent, he seeks out help from Zoe, his sister's best friend and the woman he almost kissed 4 years ago. He's regretted that since. Zoe's great with kids because of having younger siblings. Moving in as a nanny will be fine, right? Jonah can resist the proximity and how sweet she is with his son, right?--Fortunately for the reader, Jonah is passionately wrong.
I love how forceful and fierce Zoe is and how that both calms Jonah and pushes him to show up in the right way. She's grounding for his hot headedness, and they have great chemistry.
Such a wonderful story. There's spice, angst, humor, and heartbreak. Have a tissue ready for this one. Jonah is trying to revive his professional hockey career when he gets the biggest shock of his life, Eli, his 9 year old son. Zoe is not only his sister's best friend, in need of a job, and really great with kids. Together they grow together as a unit.
This is the third book in this series and I look forward to additional stories.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
👏👏👏 Terra did it again with another fantastic addition to to the Beaver County Series! This book tugged at my heart so much! Jonah becoming an instant dad and fully embracing the role was incredibly sweet! I loved seeing parenthood completely transform him into a better person! The chemistry between Zoe and Jonah was also off the charts and I loved getting to see them finally lean in to it! It also wouldn’t be complete without an appearance from my favorite beaver family! 🩷 I love this series so much and can’t wait to see who the next book is about!
I had not read the previous book and you definitely do not need to to enjoy this book. I really enjoyed this story. Jonah didn’t know he had a son and finds out when the mother passes. Eli was grief stricken and was a boy in his own world. Jonah and Zoe loved him and treated him with so much patience that an unbreakable bond developed. There was some drama with the grandmother but she did not win! Great HEA with a lovely epilogue.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Just by reading the description of what the book is about i knew that I was going to love Eli, Jonah's son so much and I was so right. The relationship that Jonah trys and accomplishes between him and Eli is so heartwarming and sweet. I love Jonahs first instincts when he finds out about Eli. This book is a roller-coaster of emotions, I was laughing one moment, then wanting to cry the next. I will totally be reading this book again.
