CAT'S OUT OF THE BAG!Princely news anchor Kunieda Kei has inadvertently revealed his caustic inner self--and his relationship with animator Tsuzuki Ushio--to his least favorite person at work, sportscaster Minagawa Tatsuki. Luckily, Tatsuki has no intention of blabbing...because he'd rather be Kei's side piece instead! With Ushio away on business, Kei is forced to confront his feelings--could he be happier going "half and half" with both men?
I was a bit worried about the whole coworker thing but it turned out alright (thus I think the almost cheating thing should have been discussed between them too further, it was really just brushed off). However, this was still a really enjoyable read !!
It's funny how much more I love the manga than the light novels. Yukimura's art is so expressive and gives so much depth to all of the characters. Kei's split between The Perfect Prince At Work and the grungy foul-mouthed jerk at home is so wonderfully visible - especially with him switching back and forth between them more rapidly, thanks to things like his coworker unmasking him.
The affection between him and Ushio is also so palpable. Love how Ushio can be chewing him out one minute and then treating him with so much care and attention, worried that he might've pushed things too far or actually hurt him. Like Minagawa says, they make a perfect pair, mostly because they understand each other so well and trust each other so deeply.
Normally I'd hate an almost-cheating storyline, but it does make sense for Kei to be tempted. Like Ushio says, a lot of his initial "win" on the dating front was because he was the only person who knew Kei's true self, which he refused to show to anyone who knew his newscaster persona. So there wasn't going to be a whole lot of competition.
Once Minagawa figures it out and also claims to be in love with Kei, there's an actual choice, where it's possible Ushio might lose. And since they had a fight about it, with Kei saying something terrible and Ushio sounding like he might just stay out of the country for good and break up with him, it makes sense for Kei to think about his options.
Still, he wasn't going to actually do anything, even if Ushio hadn't shown up (a bit of a ridiculous plot device, if you do the calculations for actual international travel time). But it led to a funny scene with Minagawa giving up entirely and Kei admitting he would be devastated at the idea of losing any part of Ushio.
Loved Ushio's rant, too. As much as it would hurt him, he wouldn't actually stop Kei if he truly wanted to date someone else...but he would put his foot down over Kei choosing someone who wasn't prioritizing him or valuing him enough to fight for all of him. Which is something that means a lot to Kei.
Once that love rival's out of the way, the story shifts to a work rival: an attractive, well-spoken newscaster who's leveraging his new evening show into a competition to take down Kei's show. Largely because Kei - without knowing it - had beaten him out of the anchor spot years earlier.
The conversation over drinks was kind of horrifying, so I get Kei freezing up over the realization that this other guy had put so much effort into achieving something that Kei just...kind of naturally fell into. Which isn't to say that Kei hasn't worked hard: he puts so much effort into his job, even when he finds it boring or stressful. But what he didn't have to do was pull out all his teeth to put in veneers, or slice part of his tongue to make his enunciation crisper.
It makes Kei dwell even more on whether this is the career path he really wants, considering how much passion and devotion other people (including Ushio) put into their jobs. Is this what he wants to do with his life? He isn't really sure. But the one thing he is sure of is his relationship with Ushio, the one person he can always be completely honest with, which makes such a difference.
So funnnyyyy. They are yelly and banter. I like that he pulled wrestling moves to solve the problem and teased us the readers for thinking it was gonna be something else. I liked that the story with the sports caster is done. But that dude was silly, I laughed at him hitting on Kei.
We get a new rival at a different news station. The practicing of the kabedon, I laughed so much at the "Today's weather forecast is LOVE"... so silly! These two are amazing.
This volume was really funny, however the bit at the beginning with the coworker trying to get Kei to cheat and kei almost going for it sort of soured it for me.
Everything after that was great though, extremely stupid and funny with the kabedon thing 🤣
