Campfire Cooking in Another World with My Absurd Skill (Light Novel) #16

Campfire Cooking in Another World with My Absurd Skill: Volume 16

Rate this book
You can only spend so much time conquering dungeons, slaying legendary beasts, and causing international incidents before refusing to meet with the king stops making you look humble and starts making you look like you’re snubbing the crown. Mukohda, much to his dismay, has run squarely into that limit, and Willem the guildmaster has dragged him to the capital for a long-overdue royal audience!

But a trip to the capital isn’t all bad news. After all, the biggest city in the kingdom is also home to the biggest Adventurer’s guild around, and the guild headquarters is the one place where Mukohda stands any chance of fulfilling his familiars’ biggest getting the leviathan they found in a dungeon butchered! The task is titanic, even by the capital’s standards, and it’s going to take everything and everyone the guild can spare—which means that Mukohda is due for a number of reunions, some much more welcome than others...

Growing tired of having to wait for new issues notwithstanding, glad to be back to this world.

Also, maybe it's getting to me, but dynamics between the cowardly Mukhouda and his entitled and bullying familiars are sort of getting to me. Like, get a grip, they are your familairs ffs, learn how to control them. And also, if I had 2 legendary creatures as my familiars, wtf do I actually have to fear?? Eventually though, we get to see a sort-of storyline where he kinda punishes them, so there's that. And we also have to remember that he is still relatively new to this world, and the dynamics between him and the 4 is just the basis of this story.

All in all, I still love this series, though i might admit that I may be getting just a tad fatigued by it. Come to think of it, maybe that long wait between new issues might just help to lessen that somewhat.

glad to know ren eguchi went to the same school of dinosaur studies as eiichiro oda.

it's honestly so aggravating to see mukohda piss his pants when confronted with even the weakest of monsters but it was pretty refreshing to see him show some real backbone and showing the fam what's up after they went on a heretofore unseen level of rampage. honestly need more of that.

He's still a coward.

It's a good read, don't get me wrong but I would love some character development instead the author just doubles down on how much of a coward the MC is.
A few plot holes haven't been addressed yet. Like his broken magic stove/oven that could only be fixed in the capital. Or how he promised to cook for a few adventures.
Several other unaddressed plot holes have left me feeling disappointed. Still it is an original concept that is beginning to be copied by other authors. It is still better written than those knock off stories as well. I hope the next book is better.

Great story and premise, stupid and dislikable main character.

I still love the core of this series, but unfortunately the lack of character development across the board and 100% repetitive plot points are finally getting to me. It wouldn't be so bad if any sort of new development or stakes were set up, but alas, I'm beginning to lose hope on seeing anything fresh or exciting from this series that breaks its mold. 16 books is a long time to have nearly 0 character development...

My reviews are my own. If you liked this book, I’m glad you enjoyed it. If not, I respect your opinion.  This is merely my opinion, so let's keep it courteous.

I'm not liking how long these books are taking to be published, and the quality of the writing is awful! So why the delay?!?!?

MUKODA
I'm getting tired of Mukoda being a coward and bullying his familiars. On this one, it got even physical....fantasy or not, animal abuse is a NO NO. It is not a joke! Especially when Fel was right, why is he putting up with all of these people?!?! There is no reason for it. Also, why is he so stupid and is OK taking all the BS from Willhem? And the Earl? I'm so done with Mukoda bending over for everyone except for the beings who actually allow him to live an "easy" life full of money. I know Fel goes overboard sometimes, but he is right on many things, like stupid Mukoda being a whimp. I'm exhausted that we are in book 16 and he still complains over and over the same things since book 1. Mukoda should tell the Earl to go F himself! Why keeps giving him crap? YOU DON'T OWE ANYONE OTHER THAN YOUR FAMILIARS STUFF!! If I had 2 legendary creatures as my familiars, what do you actually fear?? It just makes no sense this late in the story.  I wish the story would move more into adventuring and less of the rest of the BS. If the author is out of ideas, then end the story properly. Enough with the internal thinking, too, so annoying! If you are so pissed at something, SAY IT! What is the point of thinking about it? I get being polite, but that doesn't mean to be a doormat.

WILLHELM
I wish someone would just kill off this character, and Whillem keeps complaining about how Mukoda is not following Guild Rules, which should not even apply to him since he is not a "regular" adventurer. Then the guilds are making money out of it, so don't get why he whines ALL THE TIME. I dislike his character, which I once loved. Really, drop him from the dragon down to earth and get rid of him. It seems that these people are becoming too comfortable with Mukoda and showing him no respect. I'm sorry, done with them! Get rid of those characters!!! Mukoda acts like he is his pet....he should not be following NOBODY's rules. And didn't the King give an order not to bother Mukoda? How come Willhelm is such an ass towards Mukoda and Mukoda so stupid instead of telling him to shut the f up! This volume should have been called Willehm Bitchin and Leviathan Meat! ALL he did was whine the WHOLE time.

OTHER
What happened to the other stuff he had to butcher? He never brought up all the "unique" kills he had, like the Chimera. Enough with the money talk, too. He has plenty of money, who cares if honey costs so much?!?!?

CONCLUSION
I still love this series, but I knew I wouldn't enjoy this book due to all the politics. However, I ended up not liking it because of Wilhelm. Though I'm getting tired of some of the same issues across all books, like the author doesn't read the feedback from the readers. I apologize for the long review, but I was SO frustrated while reading that I needed to put it down! Can't believe that after all the waiting for this book, this is what came out! Also, can we move away from the royalty and guild? I'm tired of both. Can Mukoda go to new worlds, meet new fantastic beings? All we have seen are dwarves and elves. Stop with all the "human" boring stuff and adventure to new places!!! It is called campfire cooking, not cooking with Mukodas in the super-modern kitchen.

On to my next adventure, Happy Readings!!!

I binge-read volumes 6 to 16 within a week, so most of my complaints are similar to what others have mentioned:

1. It’s already volume 16, and somehow Mukohda has become even more of a coward. Reading his constant screaming during fights, despite having two barriers protecting him and four overpowered familiars, finally got to me. I didn’t mind it in the previous volumes, but shouldn’t he be at least somewhat used to it by now? I understand it’s the formula or trope the author uses every volume, but honestly, it’s getting old.

2. Wilhelm was completely annoying in this volume as well. I don’t understand what rules Mukohda is supposedly breaking by going out to hunt unknown monsters. He keeps lecturing Mukohda when he’s basically doing what an adventurer is supposed to do. Since when did Mukohda need a curfew or permission to leave the city? All because the guild keeps getting shocked by the new monsters he brings back? Make it make sense.

3. Nothing major happens in this volume. It follows the usual formula of them going on a hunt, killing a bunch of monsters, and then having everything processed by the guild. Since they’re in the capital right now, I kinda wished the story went in a different direction, maybe have Mukohda deal with scheming nobles or navigating their way through the political arena. At least that would be a problem his overpowered familiars couldn’t just breeze through.

I’m gonna need mukohda to start having some character development, goddamn. the only reason he can live the life that he lives is because of his familiars, and I’m kind of over the way his cowardice manifests when it comes to people in positions of authority. it comes across like he’d be glad to let the king and queen and earl threaten harm to fel and gon so long as nothing happens to him personally with the way he encourages them to chill and not respond if such a threat were to be made.

I’m also not a huge fan of the way women are portrayed in this series. one-dimensional and obsessed with conventionally girly things, which isn’t bad in and of itself, but it’s the condescending way that mukohda is like omg of COURSE women are obsessed with cosmetics, phew, just gotta dangle some shampoos in front of them and everything will work out, now to go back to dealing with the men since I’ve successfully mollified the women since they are soooo much simpler than the men. even moira has one dimension and that’s to be elrand’s minder. idk, it just rubs me the wrong way.

and then like….my brother in christ, you have not one, but two barriers bestowed upon you by all-powerful familiars, AS WELL AS perfect defense from a couple of volumes ago. what exactly do you have to be afraid of, my god. there’s a couple of lines about the toll it takes on him mentally, but like. again, how. oh it’s because you’re a coward. I see.

I completely understand why other people are growing tired of this series, but for me, Campfire Cooking is my ultimate comfort read. The worst that could ever happen to my favorite characters is an embarrassing situation or unpleasant view. And while, in book 16, there *are* several super-awkward interactions, I still had a smile on my face while reading.

If you like self-admitting cowardly cooks and snobby talking dogs, I recommend this book. It's basically a travelogue about one man's day to day experiences in a fantastical world. The main character doesn't get a lot of respect, but he also doesn't *prioritize* his pride; Mukohda cares about his safety, his cooking, and his family of familiars. So all the things he does in this book (meet with political figures, organize the butchery of a creature larger than a small village, try to keep his overpowered familiars in line) he does because of his values.

So if you want a strong, overpowered and confident MC, turn to another series. If you want a comforting, day-to-day story about a person with a very useful food prep skill and their talking animal friends, then I hope you enjoy this book.

Easy enjoyable light novel read

Enjoyed book 16. Missed the offerings chapter and interactions with the pantheon gods. Didn't do much in the capital or anything with the orphanages. Surprised one of the swords wasn't stolen.

Repetition, but also a twist.

It's nice there's new monsters. But is like less "being scolded for everything" filler, it's a bit too repetitive. Nice twist to the dinosaurs and turtles tho.

Another amazing volume.

I enjoy the fact the Mukohda has trouble everywhere he goes because of his familiars. The leviathan taking too long to butcher was shocking. The extinction of a race is alarming. Where else will the familiars go to enjoy themselves?

Another installment of the the misadventures of the foodies

Our star is both a pushover and pushing back especially against fel. It is still kinda fun just how absorbed their overpowered abilities are.

Indeed this is repetitive with hardly any character/story building. However, I guess I'm here for the long run lol. A train wreck I could not look away from. It is however, a comfort read, at least for me.
