Constantine Capers #5

A Song Without Words

Rate this book
In Bath, appearances are everything and nothing is as it seems.

Bath, 1889

When a daring burglary strikes the Sherard residence in Bath, Byron Constantine returns under the name his family knows—Ambrose Sherard. Mira Blayse travels at his side, their partnership deeper than ever and a future together finally within reach. But stepping into the Sherards’ social sphere means facing expectations sharper than any blade. Winning over Byron’s judgemental sister and formidable mother may be more difficult than solving the crime itself.

Even when the thefts turn deadly.

A man’s fatal fall after a snowstorm hints at something far more sinister, and Mira soon realizes that Bath is a city built on secrets. In glittering ballrooms and musical recitals the warmest smiles might just belong to someone playing a part.

Drawn into shadowed streets and clandestine meetings beneath the ancient Roman Baths, Mira and Byron uncover a mystery rooted deeper than the Sherard break-in—one tied to hidden loyalties, rising ambitions, and the looming threat of war in Europe. Worst of all, there are signs that Circe’s reach is far from broken.

As danger mounts and political tensions rise, Mira and Byron must learn which voices to trust—because in Bath, even the sweetest music can carry a deadly refrain.

Natalie Brianne's love of writing might be traced back to an old Rainbow Macintosh Laptop she received for her 8th birthday. Perhaps it came from years of storytelling and the discipline of wonder. Or maybe, she was born to write and didn’t realize it until a book sprung out of her fingertips somewhere between a house in Pleasant Grove, Utah and a bus on its way to Edinburgh, Scotland.

She received her degree in Interdisciplinary Humanities from BYU. While she could have studied English or Creative Writing, she opted to learn more about culture, distant lands, and people in hopes of writing better stories. Much of her first book, Constantine Capers: The Pennington Perplexity was written when she lived at 27 Palace Court, London, walking the streets as if she were her characters.

While her interests in writing spread across genres, you can always expect her work to be imaginative, clean, and clever.

In Book 4, we learn more about what Byron’s family is like. His brother Castel (who first appeared in the second book) returns, together with their sister Mary and their mother.

While Castel and Mrs. Sherard grew on me, I didn’t like Mary very much. Despite the reasons given for her behavior, Mary’s treatment of Mira (and by extension Byron) didn’t really paint her in a good light.

She comes around eventually, a bit abruptly to be honest. But having her apologize on-page would have gone a long way.

The previous books focused mainly on the smuggling part of Circe. Now, the theft branch is the focus.

I was able to guess the truth about Silas, Rudy, and the sheet music. But I wasn’t certain how it all fit together into Circe’s master plan.

Though Circe seemingly won in the end, I like how Byron pointed out that he and Mira were able to delay them even a little bit and, along the way, helped change a few people’s lives for the better.

Natalied Brianne wanted to explore the human experience in her story, "A Story Wiithout Words." She wrote her story by using the literary genre known as historical mystery. She decided to discover how people build bridges with words and navigate life through their own individual choices. Ms. Brianne believed that a person's character is defined by one's choices and not just by one's past memories. The author wanted to answer a central question which can someone be able without a past build a meaningful future. The story was written to serve as an emotional and narrative resolution for the entire Constantine Capers series.

The genre used by the author was known as historical mystery. This is a literary sub-genre where a crime and story are set in a specific time period. In this case, Victorian England, the city of Bath, and in the 1880s. A historical mystery acts as a balancing act between detective works(plotting the puzzle) and time travel(plotting the puzzle) and time travel(researching the setting). Authors as well as Ms. Brianned followed a layered process. This means that history feels part of the story without restricting the flow of the plot. The layered process means building a story by one specific element at the time. This is done as opposed to everything, the plot, the historical facts, and the character emotions, all at once. The style includes a non-linear style too.

The characteristics of a layered process are:
1.The "Base Coat": Plot and Placing
2. The Historical Weave: Authenticity
3. The Internal Layer: Character and Tone
4. The Final Polish: Sensory and Style
Authors employ the process to ensure the mystery remains the driving force of the plot. While, the history provides the rich, immersion tapestry which provides readers with great satisfaction.

There are various themes explored in the story. The themes the author focuses on are the complexities of identiy and the unspoken bonds that define us. The themes are:
1. The Mask of Society(Perception vs. Reality)
2. Identity and Heritage
3. Communication Beyond Words
4. Loyalty and Trust
5. Pacing and Tension
6. Atmosphere(The Persistance of the Past)
The themes in the story as an invisible engine. The engine drives the plot along and dictates how the characters react to danger. Many of the themes create tension in the story. The tension in the story is fueled by the high stakes of Byron Constantine's identity and the social danger of his surroundings.

The social issues in the story are grounded in the rigid and often times the hypocritical structures of the 1880s Victorian England. The author uses this time as the way to explain how the rules of society supressed the individual. One of the issues, which was one of many, was gender and autonomy. This was symbolized by the character Maria Blayse. She symbolized the limited opportuities available to women. Maria was a private investigator, i.e. Miss Scarlet, who was undervalued by the patriarchal society of Bath. Unfortunately, even with her intelligence and expertise as a private investigator she is only considered to be an assistant to Byron Constintine the series protagonist the brilliant amnesiac Victorian detective. As you read the story, discover if you are able to decipher the other social issues inferred to in the story.

The setting of the story is essential to the story. The city of Bath symbolizes the physical and internal struggle of Byron. Ms. Brianned utilized the city's unique history and archetecture to allow the plot to progress forward. The city in the 1880s was transitioning from a sleepy spa city to a major archaelogical and tourist destination. The city metaphorically the life of the main character.

The book should be read if you enjoy character driven historical mysteries. There is high society intrigue with a deep emotional payoff. The story is well researched by the author. She actually lived in Bath while researching and writing the series. She wanted to soak in the culture and history of the city. The author focused on intricate p;otting and creative storytelling. This is accomplished without relying explicit content. She expected her readers to employ their critical thinking skills throughout the story. If you desire to read a book which will stimulate intellect, this is the book for you.

A Song Without Words is the fifth installment in the Constantine Capers series, and each new entry, becomes more captivating. This time, we delve deeper into the shadowy presence of Circe, the criminal organization haunting Byron and Mira’s lives. Many series lose their spark as they progress, but I found myself glued to the pages, eager to see what lies ahead for this daring duo.

The story unfolds in Bath, where a daring burglary at the Shepard residence pulls Byron back into society under his family name, Ambrose Sherard. Mira’s introduction to his family is fraught with tension—sister Mary is openly disapproving, while his mother is initially hard to read but ultimately proves to be warm and supportive. I hope to see more of her in future installments.

A fatal fall in the snow triggers a chain of intrigue, leading to clandestine meetings beneath the Roman Baths and whispers of loyalty, ambition, and betrayal—all against the backdrop of a looming European conflict. The police are eager to close the case, but Byron and Mira aren’t convinced. Circe’s presence still lingers, and when Mary is taken, the stakes escalate as Byron races against time to solve a puzzling cipher. In Bath, even the most charming smiles hide deadly secrets.

The narrative is a delight: intricately plotted, populated with layered characters, and enriched by family dynamics that heighten the emotional stakes. Liza and Walker bring joy to the story, while Byron and Mira’s partnership remains the heart of the series—supportive, clever, tender, and deeply endearing. The mystery is skillfully woven, full of twists that keep readers guessing until the end.

In A Song Without Words, Natalie Brianne once again demonstrates mastery of historical intrigue and character-driven storytelling. With careful pacing, thrilling suspense, and heartfelt moments, this book reaffirms why the Constantine Capers series is a must-read. I eagerly await the next chapter in Byron and Mira’s adventures, confident that many more secrets remain to be uncovered.

A Song Without Words by Natalie Brianne is the fifth book in the Constantine Capers series. Byron Constantine is a detective struggling with memory issues (less of that, though, now that the series has gone on) while contending with a shadowy, secret organisation. Along to help him figure things out is his love, Samira “Mira” Blayse.

Mixed thought:

~It is exceedingly chaste. For almost the entirety of the book, the best romance between Byron and Mira is a gentle kiss on the hand or cheek. That’s on par with the others. It made the ending especially good, though, in my opinion.

Positive thoughts:

+I figured out a number of the plot points and twists ahead of time, which is always fun for a mystery. The author didn’t do what a lot of mystery authors do, which is withhold all the clues and just lay them out at the end. You can play along and figure things out.

+I enjoyed getting to know more about Byron’s family. His mother was an especial delight.

+I was bummed how One Incident turned out in the book, but the re-do later had me all excited. No spoilers, though!

Random thought:

#The Suchet character must surely be a nod to David Suchet, no?

All in all, it’s a quick read, and if you liked the former volumes, you’ll undoubtedly like this one. It has all the components and may even be more intriguing than the others, what with the added Constantine (Sherard) familial element.

I’d recommend this for historical fiction mystery fans who like duos, especially where the partner holds their own. I’d recommend the SERIES, though, not just leaping into this one.

There are a string of burglaries that have Mira and Byron on the case, and this time, this one is personal. Byron’s family has had family jewels stolen, and the evidence points to an insider, but who would that be? I loved the mystery, danger, and the clues that keep you engaged until the final page.

Mira Blayse is like no other lady since she is independent, analytical, and makes a great partner for Ambrose Sherard aka the detective, Byron Constantine. There were some tense moments and even confrontations with certain members of Byron’s family, but I loved how things weren’t all they seemed to be and Mrs. Sherard is now one of my new favorites in the series.

The villains are still making plans and Circe is continuing to go forward with their acts of chaos, but Byron and Mira, along with the help of others will ever be striving to bring them down. I hope there will be another book in the Constantine Capers series that I have thoroughly enjoyed. If you like political intrigue, mysteries, and a bit of romance, I highly recommend reading this book and all of the others. In order to understand all of the details of relationships and things that are mentioned from past books, it would be beneficial for you to begin with the first book and read in order.

I received a gifted copy from the author through Book Sirens. I was under no obligation to write a positive review.

Returned from France with a full house due to Cyrus and Loretta’s marriage, Mira finds herself wondering where she belongs. Getting back to routine as Byron’s secretary leads her to beyond the grave information about Circe. But her haste in sharing that causes her to make a poor impression on Byron’s sister and mother, who have arrived to seek his help in recovering stolen jewelry. Byron agrees to go to Bath undercover to investigate the spate of burglaries. Mira and Walker find a way to join him through a visit with Eliza’s family. A dead body at a house party lead the local police to deem the case closed, but Mira and Byron discover that all is not as it seems, and Circe is still lurking in the shadows. With family in danger, Byron has a race against time to solve a puzzling cipher.

Natalie Brianne’s excellent Constantine Capers series returns in another intriguing case. The unconventional relationship between Byron and Mira is contrasted against the expectations of his aristocratic family. Mira’s feelings of inadequacy and social ineptness plague her in the face of Mary’s hostility. I was pleased to see how strongly Byron defended her. I also loved how the relationship between Mira and Byron’s mother shifted through the book. As with the previous installments, the specter of Circe hangs over everything, manipulating things in the background. Some former foes reappear and others may not be who they seem. But through it all, Byron and Mira remain a formidable team and their bond becomes ever stronger. While the individual mystery is tied up in each story, this is a series that should be read in order to grasp the full impact of the conspiracies.

'A Song Without Words' is another fantastic addition to the Constantine Capers series, and five books in, I’m still happily invested in these characters and their adventures.

This installment offers a deeper look into Byron’s complicated family, adding a fresh layer to his story. I also enjoyed spending more time with Liza and Walker, whose presence continues to bring warmth and charm. The shadowy Circe remains a far‑reaching threat, and the layered mysteries kept me turning pages.

As always, the heart of the series is Byron and Mira. Their partnership stays clever and wholesome, and it’s been a joy watching their relationship grow as they tackle increasingly complex cases together.

Another great installment of Constantine (and Mira)'s capers. It was fun to get to meet Byron's family and learn more about his life and how he became the man he is. I also enjoy having Walker and his betrothed working closely with them to solve the mysteries so that Mira has family about her. Even though many things in her life have changed, there are still so many good things to come. While Circe plays a part in the story, it isn't the main focus, which was nice. It felt a little lighter and character-focused. I look forward to the next book to find out what happens to Mira & Byron and their ever-growing family.

Thank you to Book Sirens and the publisher for selecting me to read an advanced copy.

I love Mira and Byron, and the continuing drama of Circe running throughout these books makes this series one of my favourites.

Book 5 the investigation moves to Bath, which gives a different setting, and we meet Byron’s mother and sister, giving the opportunity to learn a bit more about him.

The first half of the story is more a standard mystery, but that opens up into the second half which is more around Circe and gives a much more dark and dramatic second half.

There are few romantic/heartfelt moments between Byron and Mira, but it’s clear how they feel about each other and the best moment is definitely saved for last.

Thank you to book sirens for the ARC

Great latest installment of Constantine Capers. I received the book as a advance reader copy and was so glad I did. My favorite books are mysteries and this was a well thought out mystery with lots of moving parts. If you have read the previous books you will certainly enjoy this one. If you have not read any of the other I believe you will still enjoy this one. You get a lot more personal information about Byron (one of the main characters). You get to see his relationship grow with Mira as they work together and stand up for each other. Great detective work with a little romance and lots of compassion for people in a difficult situation. I can't wait for the next Installment.

This is another great book in the Constantine Capers series. In this one, we get to meet Byron’s family. Of course Mira gets off on the wrong foot with them and spends the rest of the book trying to make things right. If that isn’t enough, she and Byron are trying to solve a string of jewel heists. As always, the specter of Circe is always present.
I really liked the book. The mystery was, as always, full of twists and turns. And the relationship between Mira and Byron is just delightful and sweet. I thought adding in his family made the romantic part of the story even better.
I received an advance copy of this book and am enthusiastically leaving this 5-star review.

In the fifth book of the Constantine Capers series we follow Mira and Byron trying to solve yet another mystery, while balancing their relationship.

Enter Byron's family, with Mira having pretty much on her plate.

As usual the story is well plotted, characters nice and the mystery not that easy to unravel.

I recommend this series and look forward to what comes next!

This is part of a series and I think one would enjoy it more if it was read in the series order. Byron and Mira are the main characters and their relationship has deepened. There is a mystery that involves his family which takes them to Bath. The storyline is well developed with the mystery not easily solved. The Circe, a criminal organization, is still prominent in their lives. The supporting characters are important to the story and add depth.

Well done!

This was a very satisfying mystery that I didn't completely figure out before the ending which is always the mark of a good story for me. The plot was intricate but not confusing and it did not feel contrived. There were a couple of clues I thought the brilliant detective should have noticed sooner but that didn't spoil the unfolding of the mystery. I hope this series continues for many more books.

This is a great series and I continue to enjoy each new installment. It's a risk for an author to continue a series with the same main characters as it can get stale, yet this author somehow brings each installment to life with new and creative twists, turns and historical information. Well paced, intriguing and always suspenseful.

Great mystery

The Constantine mysteries are always a treat. Excellent plot. Great characters. Hard to put down. Although this offering in the series was a little difficult to concentrate on, due to the number of new characters, and complex story, it was worth it to persevere until the end. I highly recommend this book, as well as the complete series..

So much drama and danger in this one as Mira and Bryon deal with his family and a mystery. Loved watching it all play out and guess what is going on and how it will cause trouble for these two. I laughed and groaned but loved the story and characters as they deal with everything. Loved see how close Mira and Bryon have gotten after everything they have faced in previous books.

Once again, Natalie Brianne did not disappoint: A Song Without Words is a delightful read for anyone who likes historical mysteries with likeable characters. I like that there is the constant thread of Circe throughout the series, and that with every book we learn more about Mira and Constantine. In this book, we meet more of Constantine's family and the author does more than scratch the surface: she gives us fully developed characters, with past traumas and baggage that give meaning to their current actions. The accident/murder mystery kept me guessing and this short read definitely was a five stars for me!
I received an ARC to review but this is my honest opinion: if you are a fan of the historical mystery genre you should read the series ASAP!
