Ophelia “Lia” Nichols never wanted a perfect life. She would have settled for ordinary. Unfortunately, even ordinary seems like a stretch after her mother dies tragically and unexpectedly, leaving her in the care of Lia’s stepfather who makes her skin crawl and Cam, the stepbrother with whom she’s helplessly in love. Despite the grief taking her to her knees, she keeps hoping things will get better.
They don’t.
In fact, they seem to be getting worse, starting with Lia’s acceptance to Everdale University, an Ivy League caliber university that she never applied to, despite the letter in her hands saying otherwise.
At Everdale, Lia is surrounded by mysteries including an enigmatic professor neither she nor Cam can seem to resist. As they enter their senior year, Lia and Cam begin to realize that, not only is Everdale not what it seems, but there’s something dark festering in its hallowed halls.
Wow, this was DARK! Sure there is romance and spice, but the secret society part adds a thriller element to it. That first chapter absolutely had my stomach churning, and my first reaction had been “What am I getting into?”. Because from that very first chapter, it is crystal clear how dangerous La Societe really is.
Because of this first chapter, we also get a pretty good idea of their next plans and who will be involved. This made every interaction so much heavier, creepier and more horrifying. The grooming, the too long glances, a touch lingering just a bit too long. It kept me on edge, hoping everything will work out and the creeps in this series will meet a very painful end.
I loved Ophelia and Cameron. They’re so tender and caring with each other, where it matters most. Because their relationship is forbidden, it takes a while before they both give in. Making the burn wonderfully slow. Their relationship is kept a secret from everyone for several reasons, one of them is because they are stepsiblings, making their connection somewhat taboo. At the end of the story this lovely couple will meet Professor Aiden Masters, both are very attracted to him from the start and vice versa. Sooo, this will be interesting for sure.
Ofcourse that ending was way too sudden, like I just ran out of pages. And yeah, I’m going to need the next book. 😉
Deception by @authorbillienicks and @victoriajohnson_author is a dark secret society romance/thriller about Ophelia “Lia” Nichols, whose life completely falls apart after her mum dies. She’s left living with a stepfather who makes her uncomfortable, and Cam, the stepbrother she is very much in love with. Then Lia gets accepted into Everton University…Except she never applied. Once Lia and Cam get there, things get weird very quickly. There are secrets everywhere, a mysterious professor neither of them can seem to stay away from, and something very dark hiding inside that university.
Listen. Before we even start, this is one of THE best books I have read this year. I LOVE secret society. I LOVE why choose. I LOVE dark academia. I have read so many of them and honestly, they never get boring for me. But this? This is not just another secret society book. This was so much better. We have age gap, professor/student, MMF, forbidden relationships, secret society, dark academia, and a bisexual awakening. The MMF side will progress over the trilogy, so don’t go in expecting a whole heap of triple party fun straight away, because Victoria and Billie are absolutely edging us with these three in this book.
Lia and Cameron may well be my new fave book couple. There is zero toxicity in their relationship. Cam has been there for Lia from the day their families were thrown together(which is the cutest scene), and even more so after her mum passes away. He looks after her, protects her, and is just always there. Do they love each other? Very much so. Do they LOVE LOVE each other? Also yes haha. I loved watching their relationship shift and grow, especially because they both know they shouldn’t act on what they feel. The tension, the care, the history between them… I loved all of it.
Then we have Aiden. Professor Masters. This man develops a relationship with both Lia and Cameron for different reasons, but his relationship with Cameron? 🔥 The mouth on this man. The sexual energy between them was insane, and from the first time they lay eyes on each other, it is HOT. I am honestly surprised I didn’t need an ice pack to cool down 🥵
“Fuck, you’re perfect, baby boy,” I growled, ripping open the packet and drizzling its contents over his dick before fisting him in my grip.
Watching Cameron go through all those emotions of understanding and acceptance was beautifully written and really resonated with me. From “I’m straight” to “wait… am I gay?” to realising he is attracted to both of them and that he is bi. More than once I had tears in my eyes for how he was almost angry at himself for the feelings he was going through.
There were elements in this that of course had been done before, and I think there’s only so many ways you can do secret society, but it was executed so well, and the characters, along with the emotion, chemistry, and twists and turns was written so well and I was incredibly invested. Im genuinely upset I have to wait for book 2 haha!
Check your triggers, the prologue is dark and difficult to read, but this book is not to be missed. Add to your TBR today.
Thank you so much Billie, Victoria and Luna Literary for this ARC, but also damn you for making me wait for book 2 🤣
*Please note, I was provided with an ARC version of this book by Luna Literary Management and am voluntarily leaving an honest review*
What an atmospheric read! There's so much going on in this book that appeals! An overriding sense of darkness permeates every line without the book being overtly dark (for the most part...); an initial romance that feels quite sweet and innocent while also having the 'edge' of being taboo; and a set of circumstances that really wouldn't feel out of place as the setting for a thriller... yeah, this is a book that is deeply enthralling and a little bit uncomfortable in the best way.
I liked the structure of the narrative, with the foundational blocks being laid in a compelling yet succinct way. You're given all the information you need to build the world, characters and an idea of the story's trajectory inside your head within the first third, with the pace being quick enough to get you to where you need to be without sacrificing detail or the opportunity to sink into the story. Things then settle into a more sustained rhythm, allowing you you enjoy the delicious torment!
I may not have become quite as viscerally attached to Cam, Lia and Aiden (yet) as I have with other characters created by these authors, but that's mainly because their story has only just begun. That being said, all three of them are intriguing, interesting, and have an appeal that's hard to explain; I just know that I NEED to see more of them. Aiden is perhaps the one I'm drawn to most at this point; his dominant energy and 'hot professor' vibe sing off the page and I'm 1000% getting my 'marally grey' buttons lit up like a Christmas tree!
I love how sweet and 'innocent' (for want of a better phrase) the relationship between Cam and Lia is. Even when they're very much not acting innocent, they have the 'us against the world' dynamic that left me just a little bit starry eyed. Their confessions later in the book only add to thia feeling, and there's one particular scene that, although viewed from afar, feel so out of character for both of them and yet it makes total sense that that's exactly the sort of thing they'd do. This also really adds to their dynamic with Aiden - a corrupting influence that calls to something they haven't experienced before...
I love that the goings on of La Societie are completely unhinged, and yet the world we live in sadly means I can't quite convince myself there aren't organisations like that out there. It also comes across to me as a really effective metaphor for the current state of things; powerful people who've always been willing to do twisted things to retain their power... and yet those twisted things seem to be getting darker, more extreme and they're not quite as concerned about keeping their actions 'in the shadows' as they used to be. Creepy, but so effective!
Happy release day Billie and Tori - you've once again both done an amazing job!
Thank you so much to Luna Literary and the authors for gifting me an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review 🖤💚
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌶️🌶️🌶️
This book definitely took a little while to get going for me, but once the story found its footing, I was completely invested. I really appreciated that the authors took the time to build the relationships and establish the connections between the characters because it made everything that followed feel so much more believable. The forbidden nature of the relationship added an extra layer of tension, and the chemistry between Cam and Ophelia was impossible to ignore.
Cam completely stole my heart. He gives off major golden retriever energy with just a hint of black cat, and honestly, I wanted to give this man a hug for most of the book. Watching him navigate his sexuality and experience his bi-awakening was one of my favourite parts of the story. There was something so genuine and emotional about seeing him work through his confusion while trying to understand what he wanted and who he wanted it with.
Ophelia also had my whole heart. Losing her mother at such a pivotal point in her life left her carrying so much grief, anxiety, and self-doubt, and being stuck with her creepy stepfather only made things harder. As someone who tends to overthink everything, I found her incredibly relatable. Watching Cam become a safe space for her and support her through some of her struggles was genuinely beautiful.
And then there’s Aiden Masters…
Aiden Masters, A MAN. The second he appeared on the page, I was hooked. He has such a strong presence throughout the story and impacts both Cam and Ophelia in completely different ways. Every scene he was in had me wanting more, and I’m already desperate to see where his story goes from here.
I also really enjoyed the secret society aspect of this book. It added an extra layer of mystery and intrigue to the story, and I feel like we’ve only scratched the surface of all the dodgy things happening behind the scenes. I have so many questions and I’m incredibly curious to see what gets uncovered as the series progresses.
Overall, this was a strong start to the series with compelling characters, great chemistry, plenty of tension, and a mystery that has me wanting answers. That ending though? Absolutely diabolical. I immediately needed the next book because I cannot wait to see where Cam, Ophelia, and Aiden’s story goes from here.
This book is haunting and begins with dark tones with an opening chapter that will make you question everything. This dark academia story follows Ophelia and Cameron (step siblings) who endure loss from a young age and find comfort and love with each other. Ophelia's loss of her mother changes everything for her and the life ahead. Her Stepfather begins to be overbearing and make her uncomfortable, but through everything Cameron is there for her and their relationship continues to blossom in secret from everyone, especially Cam's father. As years pass it's time for them to attend college and Cam/Lia are ready to get through this period to get away from Harry, Cam's father, so they can be together. Cam is to attend Everton, but Lia wanted to attend any other college. Things don't go how she hoped and is forced to attend Everton. Harry brings Cam into a Secret Society and Cam was not prepared for or wanted anything to do with this, but in order to protect Lia, he submits to his Dad's wishes. As they progress through to their final year in University, things take a wild and d@rk turn. Enter in Professor Aiden Masters who has his eyes on both Cam & Lia, throw in the dark and twisted Secret Society and you have no idea how they will ever find a way out of the danger they seem to be headed towards. But Aiden may be the one person to save them in more ways than one.
I haven't read a Dark Academia quite like this one before, the first chapter had me gasping in shock. This is a well written Dark Romance/Dark Academia with so many twists and turns. My favorite part of this story was the utter love and devotion between Cameron and Ophelia. Ophelia's grief gripped me with so much heartbreak, but watching Cameron give everything he can to protect and help Ophelia find her happiness and peace was so beautiful. If you love dark academy, dark secret societies with extreme dark tones, a undeniable and unbreakable love, mystery and a really well done Bi-Awakening for one of our MC's, then this is the book you must read. The ending had me needing the second book immediately.
Thank you Luna Literary and the authors for this gifted e-arc. This is my honest and own opinion.
Hooked. Absolutely freaking hooked on this one. Was so mad that I had to put it down for work and for sleep.
Nicks and Johnson had my attention from the beginning with this one, and it's a true compliment to them that they could weave so many plot points into the book and not be muddled at any point. The prologue is written in such a way that you need to know what happens, and then you launch into the story of Lia and Cam, their forbidden, secret love, and the overall plot of La Société. Then throw in Aaron when the time is right, and holy hell, I couldn't put it down.
I really loved that so much happens before we get to the crux of the Société aspect of the narrative - the authors have weaved such a great world and complex relationships already, that it all has felt so natural in its movement to this point. It's lent such a strong foundation, so that as the more questionable aspects of the plot come into play, you feel you can understand why characters make the decisions they do and let their emotional responses be what they are.
Having Aaron enter later into the story was also a smart choice, and I loved his separate relationships with Cam and Lia. I can't really say much more on this without spoiling the story.
It's actually so hard to write this review without spoiling the book, but I think this is hands down the best dark romance I've read this year to date. I'm so excited for part two to drop, just to see where it all goes, from a relationship aspect as well as from the La Société aspect. I always love a secret society book, and this one does not disappoint.
This is my first taste of both authors, and I'm not only excited to see where this duet goes, but to also look back on their previous books because with this alone, I am a fan.
Thank you to the authors and @lunaliterary.management for the eARC opportunity. These are my honest thoughts that I have provided voluntarily.
I was kicking my feet cause how cute was her first meet with cam like girl she knows what likes and letting him call her lia cause she wasnt going let his dad use her nickname but cam could I love that.
The way it hurt her so deeply to see her mom in that way, she never liked any type of drugs or any of that sort, which made so much sadder.
And the step-dad (Harry) ugh makes me feel so uncomfortable.
Even Cam started noticing how weird his dad would look at lia .
He was confused about how he was reacting after everything he saw the way his body reacted to the excitement he felt, but he didn't wanna touch that . I love how everything is written the build up, but he never bashes it fully he can see when a hot man is obviously good-looking .
I love how possessive he is over even though he wants to give in already, but he knows it is not the right time, yet he doesn't want to mess anything up til he can lia his completely.
Chapter 11, yes 💋
The three years later They obviously have to keep their relationship hidden, but Cammy knew she was his and he was he
Is the man he so hypnotized by and cam is tha man Aiden has been fantasied since they saw eachother.
I felt so bad for Cam he was so worried she was going to leave .
As i got further into the book I was getting the chills of the unknown what going happen next and damn Aiden has lia and cam feeling things they never thought they would feel for anyone else and confusion of it all.
Not going lie, I was a bit hurt for lia
The more Aiden showed his caring and protective was over both cam and lia without even knowing their connection together as well the guilt both lia and cam felt cause its only ever been eachother no one else came close to having their attention til Dr Aiden Masters.
The built-up of it all had me on the edge, not knowing what would happen next, but I knew Harry was bad, but he much more than thought .
When Aiden said this .it was just simply perfect. [ “Pretty goddamn babies.” ]
*Menage (MMF) *Contemporary *Multi-1st-PoV *University Setting *Staggered Timeline *Secret Society *Step-Siblings *Student/Teacher *Bi-Awakening *Building Menage *Mid-Burn *Book 1 / ? Great tropes, engaging characters and spicy scenes! This is my first book by either of these authors and I really enjoyed it! There’s some great forbidden tropes in there plus the age gap which along with the characters themselves make for an engaging read 🙂 I did find it took me a little while to get into this but that first part of the book really gave you the solid foundation Cam and Lia have to their relationship 😍 despite being being forbidden they have an undeniable connection cemented with some serious heat 🥵 they’ve become each others rock and protectors - however Everton University brings with it some drama and challenges that might rock their foundations 😖😖 one such complication is Aiden Masters, the professor, who has serious impact on each of these siblings for different reasons….🥵🥵 Then of course there’s the society and whatever dodginess is going on there. I like that we are given an inkling of what Harry may be up to at the very start of the book but the characters know nothing so I’m very excited to see how they respond to what it is he has in store for them 😨
What did I just read. This is soooo much more story than a typical dark romance - in a good way! I really enjoyed how the author didn't shy away from harsh topics. Please do read the trigger warnings before diving in.
I could not get enough of Cam's interactions in his bi-awakening. I was kicking my feet and giggling.
The author made me feel positively ANCIENT when Lia had to ask who was on the radio!
I wouldn't call the ending a cliffhanger...but it's abrupt as hell. I vocalized "That's it?!" and confused my husband. I even double checked that I downloaded the file correctly.
My only negative is that the writing can be a smidge repetitive. That being said, I look forward to reading more about Lia, Cam & Aiden. I can't wait to see if/how we get to see them all together. I also REALLLLLLLY hope Harry gets some karma thrown his way.
One thing I noticed, and it's probably not in the final version, but in my ARC copy chapter 28 is before 27. They aren't misnumbered, as the story is out of sync.
I received an ARC of this book and have given my review honestly. Thank you to Luna Literary and the author.
I love secret society trope, but this one is F R E A K Y. Starting with the step siblings and leaving the best for the end 🤭. Although prologue was not my favorite to read due to certain scene, I can say that did not stop me from reading further and eventually liking the book 😛
Cameron and Ophelia have the sweetest relationship when they’re younger. Cameron is respectful and patient with her, so careful and makes sure to ask for her permission. I freaking adore that. He’s there for her throughout anything. Ophelia completely stuttering and losing her words when speaking to Aiden for the first time is so valid. I will not apologize for making half of my review about Aiden 😭😩
Aiden f—king Masters. He has two of them falling for him, and counting me as third. Two step siblings wrapped around his finger. I’m so down. His dirty talk to Cameron had my eyes glued to the screen. Counting the drunk Cameron party scene too. I’m obsessed. Chapter 8 got me in chokehold. Read chapter 8 and thank me later. This is for freaky ones.
This book gave me the feels. Who doesnt love a baby boy bi-awakening?!? Eveything is setting up for the next book or two which seems to be gearing up for some very spicy MMF action. It ends in a cliffhanger and had me clicking for the next page.
Book setting is dark so triggers are many so be careful if you are squimish. Prologue is not for the faint of heart.
Triggers include: Necrophilia (not by an MC) Depression/grief Addiction/Substance Abuse (discussed) Drug Overdose (off-page, discussed) Orgy Parental Death General Stepfather Creepiness Ritualistic Murder Cult Mentality Brainwashing Rich People Being Corrupt Pieces of Shit and Doing Bad Things Attemped Sexual Assault (not between MCs) Attempted Murder (not between MCs) Grooming Explicit Sexual Scenes Internalized Homophobia Dom/Sub Dynamics Exhibitionism Voyeurism Corporal Punishment Dub Con Degradation Praise kink Age Gap (18 years) Drugged Sex (not between MCs)
Thank you to the authors and Luna Literary Management for the ARC opportunity. These are my honest thoughts and I come by them freely.
After her mother’s unexpected death, Ophelia’s left in the care of her stepfather, who makes her skin crawl, and Cam, her stepbrother with whom she’s in love. Things get worse when she gets accepted to Everdale University, even if she never applied. But at least she can live with Cam. They both start feeling a forbidden attraction to an enigmatic professor. Surrounded by mysteries, they begin to realise Everdale is not what it seems. A dangerous and powerful secret society has its eyes on them.
Loved the built-up tension and the way romance, mystery and spice are perfectly balanced!
The plot keeps you on the edge and the bi awakening rep and how it is dealt with is truly top-notch!
HOLY 🥵🥵🥵 this book was dark but so so so good, I absolutly devoured it. Ophelia was Thirteen when she met Harry and his son Cameron.
I didnt like Harry and all, but I did love how much Cam cared and loved Lia. He was so protective of her.
Now bring in Aiden, who we fist meet when harry takes Cam to this thing. Comes to find out Aiden is a professor what their college and he is Cam’s Professor and Lia’s Mentor.
I loved the whole thing. BUT THAT CLIFF HANGER. WHAT THE HECK. I NEED MORE MORE MORE
This is book 1 of 3. 🥵🥵! This is my first book by either of these authors and I can’t wait to read the rest! There’s some great forbidden tropes in there plus the age gap. I did find it took me a little while to get into this even though the first part of the book really gave you the solid foundation Cam and Lia have to their relationship.
Both authors are new to me. I had no idea what to expect. I was completely blown away by their book.
I love dark academia and forbidden relationships. Add in why choose with an extremely well written bi awakening, a secret society and I'm completely hooked!!!
There's so much that I like with this book, but don't want to spoil it for anyone.
All I can say is I'm here for the trilogy!! I can't wait to see where the story goes, especially after that cliffhanger.
ugh i’m gonna be thinking about the ending of this book until the next one comes out! Ophelia and Cam we see really grow up in this story. We see them first meeting as teenagers and see their relationship develop as step siblings. Lia honestly has it the worst and she doesn’t even know what’s to come. I’m glad she has Cam in her corner and now will have Aiden. I can’t wait to see how the relationship between the 3 of them develops. Because Cam is very dominant when it comes to Lia but becomes putty in Aiden’s hands. Excited for the next one.
Deliciously dark and twisted. Check your trigger warnings and be advised that there is a cliffhanger, however so well worth it!!
Enjoyed the secret society aspect of this book. It added an extra layer of mystery and intrigue to the story, and I feel like we’ve only scratched the surface of all the dodgy things happening behind the scenes.
Loved the built-up tension and the way romance, mystery and spice are perfectly balanced!
This drew me in so fast ophila and cam were absolutely beautiful 😍. Their development throughout the twists and turns.. an Adian 🥵 as much as he causes trouble he is also the man that brings this together. The Thriller aspect in this was top notch an so well done.. this being said, the ending was stunning but I absolutely need more!!.
Wow! This was not what I expected at all. It will definitely keep you on your toes. Deliciously dark and twisted. Check your trigger warnings and be advised that there is a cliffhanger, however so well worth it!!
