Imprisoned Slumber

Rate this book
In a castle of secrets and a garden of dreams, love may be the key to awakening them both.

Mirelle is a skilled thief who steals not for riches, but for the stories hidden in the objects she touches. Her magic allows her to glimpse secrets of the past—memories locked within trinkets, relics, and forgotten heirlooms. During a dangerous heist, an abandoned castle suddenly appears. Inside lies a forbidden object that only royal blood can touch…and it calls to her. When Mirelle dares to lay her hands upon it, she’s swept into a trial to determine the heir to the throne—one left vacant after the previous prince vanished without a trace.

Before she can escape, that night she awakens in a dream-bound garden of roses and thorns, where time stands still and nothing is quite what it seems. The only other soul trapped there is a nameless gardener who tends to the withering blooms. But when Mirelle wakes, the world has changed. The ruined castle is whole again, and the kingdom believes she is the long-lost princess cursed into slumber. By day she attempts to navigate the intrigue of the royal court, while at night she's drawn deeper into the dream realm.

As Mirelle and the mysterious man from her dreams begin to fall in love across the veil of sleep, a curse descends—one that threatens not only the waking world, but the fading memory of the man who haunts her dreams whose face begins to resemble someone long lost. To uncover the truth, Mirelle must unravel the palace’s secrets, break the curse, and rescue the man trapped in her dreams—before she loses herself to the world of sleep forever.

As I sat down to write my review this quote from The Tempest by Shakespeare popped into my head:

We are such stuff
As dreams are made on, and our little life
Is rounded with a sleep. Sir, I am vex'd;
Bear with my weakness; my, brain is troubled:
Be not disturb'd with my infirmity

I felt like it fit pretty well for Mirelle and her story. The sleep and dreams that she has and the unknown of what is happening to her. Especially with her memories changing and trying to navigate the dream world she is "imprisoned" in and her trying to find a way to "wake" and to save Evander as well.

I thought this was very intriguing. There were a few parts that didn't quite add up but overall I was invested in our thief Mirelle and her discovering what was really happening and what she stumbled upon when she thought she was just going to innocently sneak into the "abandoned" palace and steal something to help her survive. Oh my. This adventure sure did turn out differently than she had planned! I kept thinking I had it figured out and would then fall short in my guesses and would just have to keep reading to discover what more clues alongside Mirelle and see if I could solve the clues to allow for her escape from this dreaming slumber.

I liked seeing the different sides of Evander and thinking about all of us and having our own multi-facets to our personalities. Very interesting how the author portrayed that. Kept me turning the pages and hoping that all would turn out right in the end.

Content: Clean.

I received a copy from the author, via StoryOrigin. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.

Happy Reading!!!

I just finished a trilogy before starting this that ate at my brain. I had to restart this book 5 times before I could finally read it. I'm so glad I gave myself the opportunity to read it with a clearer mind!
Evander is awake. But he's the only one in his kingdom who is. Mirelle sleeps unaware. This story was beautifully crafted around a thief who steals the heart of a prince. The magic is great! The story, fantastic!
The dedication was heartwrenching. Prayers go out to Camille and her family!
You don't want to miss this or any book in the Displaced Fairytales series!!

Not my cup of tea

While I appreciate how well Camille Peters writes, I found this slow. There was too much internalization, and not enough banter. Too much description of objects, too.

Reader’s Notes:

*Series or Connected Books?* part of a series, but meant to be read as a stand-alone

*Point Of View:* Mirelle

*Any Cursing Or Possibly Offensive Language?* there are about 10 mentions of a character uttering a curse/oath, but no words used on page

*Romance?* Yes! Just kisses

*Things To Know:*

–(nothing that I noted!)

Review:

I really enjoyed this story! It was slightly similar to Camille Peters’ Revert, in that Mirelle kept waking up in an alternate timeline of sorts & being a bit disoriented when switching between them – though for this book it was more like 2 different versions of the same world rather than timelines. I loved how Mirelle’s memories between worlds would shift in her head where she would question herself about her own knowledge and forget things like names of people she’d seen before. It was interesting to see what she would remember when and how it affected what she’d do next. I loved not really knowing what would happen and what the different versions of Evander were trying to do when speaking with Mirelle. It made the story’s twist so much more satisfying to me after getting answers to questions Mirelle kept asking herself as she searched for information on what was going on. And I loved Mirelle’s powers and how they would help & hinder her on her quest for answers!

Summary:

Mirelle is a thief who steals items for the memories they harbor. But one night her gift gets her into trouble. Finding an abandoned castle filled with treasures is just the kind of place Mirelle loves to investigate with her gift. But when the item calling to her causes her to be entered into a trial for the next heir to the throne when touched, Mirelle is swept into secrets and unknowns unlike any she’s found before.

Along the way, more questions than answers arise. From a mysterious dream gardener, altered reality, and a mysteriously secretive man, Mirelle isn’t sure what to believe. Especially when her own memories appear and disappear without reason between dream and waking. But she’ll do everything in her power to get to the bottom of her new realities, even if it means allying herself with someone who might be untrustworthy.

Had interesting parts, but I was so confused by the 2 worlds. I wish there would have been more of the back story before the curse began. I felt like there could have been more character building as well - the relationship just didn’t feel real. I’ve loved books by this author, but this one fell flat for me.

Genre: Fantasy, fairy tale retelling [of Sleeping Beauty, and The Princess and the Pea], Intrigue
Setting: Dream world, castle, ambiguous settings
Writing style: 1st person, past tense
Tone: Mysterious, intriguing, cryptic
Character- or plot-driven: Plot-driven

Romance: Yes
Clean level:
• 1 kiss mildly described over 2-3 paragraphs, including fingers in hair, his "eyes smoldering"
• 1 mouth kiss minimally described over multiple paragraphs, 2 over about a paragraph
• 1 mouth kiss barely described
• 1 barely-described instance of recalling a kiss
• 1 instance of thinking he’s going to kiss her, he looks at her lips twice; 2-3 paragraphs
• 3 more instances of looking at lips
• 2 cheek kisses barely described, 1 without description
• 1 head kiss barely described
• 1 instance of caressing her cheek, a few sentences
• 1 instance nestling face against neck with a sigh
• 1 instance of handholding including brushing; a couple paragraphs
• 1 instance of his thumb tracing her wrist
• 1 instance of whispering in ear causing shudder
• 1 instance of his fingers brushing her cheek, 1 of his hand touching her cheek
• Attraction and light flirting

Favorite aspects of the book:
• Writing style
• The intrigue
• The reworking of the sleeping curse

*This series entry doesn’t seem to follow the intended premise. I don’t see that either protagonist goes from one fairy tale to another. In fact, I only saw one element of the Princess and the Pea, and I’m not even sure what role it’s supposed to play in the plot.

This was an intriguing storyline that kept me bewildered as intended throughout the mystery of it all, though also left me bewildered in a perhaps unintended way, with a number of glaringly unanswered questions. Nonetheless, I did enjoy the narrative overall.

I wish there had been deeper development in the romance between the protagonists, especially to make the revelation and the key to the mystery and breaking the sleep spell more compelling.

Some loose ends, among others I have difficulty pinning down:

Favorite Quotations:
• He didn’t answer, but I felt the shift before I saw it in his expression, the subtle falter that passed through him as his unsteady gaze dropped, but with something almost searching, as though he had lost his place in a script he had once known by heart.
• I listened intently to my powers as they swept through the castle, searching for the one I felt with unshakable certainty was asleep somewhere within it. They sought a possession worth stealing, and never had there been a greater quarry than the possessor of my heart.
• “You’re not the woman of my dreams, Mirelle: you’re the one who made them real.”

This was such a creative and beautifully written retelling that blends sleeping beauty with a bit of the princess and the pea, while still feeling completely original.
It follows a young thief with a special ability to see memories that others can't see, who breaks into a castle and ends up caught in a mystery about a missing prince. There's also a really interesting twist with a sleeping curse and a dreamworld that blurs the line between what's real and what isn't, which kept things engaging the entire time.
The writing is especially strong when it comes to atmosphere. The author paints scenes in a soft, vivid way, and the world feels very immersive.
I also really enjoyed the personalities of the main characters. The protagonist is spunky, independent, and resourceful, while the prince has a teasing edge, but definitely makes you feel as though there's a lot more to learn about him than at first meets the eye. The relationship develops in the way that feels natural, with both of them drawn to each other almost against their better judgment.
At its core, it also has a meaningful message about self-worth and learning to believe in yourself, even when you feel like you're not enough.
A beautifully written fairytale retelling, with mystery and romance woman in. I give it two enthusiastic thumbs up!

What a magical story! I was hooked from the first chapter and loved seeing the threads come together through to the last chapter.
Mirelle was an interesting character. I was not sure what to think of her in the beginning. She was independent to a fault and so curious. It was intriguing seeing the mysteries of the castle through her eyes. She was very observant and it really added to the immersion into the world. Mirelle was drawn into the magical mysteries and she drew me in too!
The story was so engaging and I was racing to figure out how everything would come together. I loved seeing the clues and pieces slowly coming into place. As Mirelle is trying to understand the worlds she wakes up in and the man she finds in her dreams, The whole story definitely had a dreamy feel to it all. It was very magical with lush details. I loved the romance too! It felt gradual and natural. Mirelle was able to open up and grow through it. I don’t want to give any spoilers, but I loved seeing the different aspects of her that came out through her interactions.
This is a fairytale inspired fantasy combining Princess and the Pea and Sleeping Beauty.. It is a standalone with only kisses.
I received an ARC.

What is a dream and what is reality?

Imprisoned Slumber builds two realities and one significant mystery. I absolutely loved the characters. Mirelle and Evander share a history but keep forgetting how they know each other. There's clearly chemistry between them and a mystery to unravel. I appreciated how Mirelle's determination prevents her from falling into despair at her situation. Instead, she's resourceful and constantly searching for solutions. The castle keeps changing along with Mirelle's place in it. Nothing is what it seems yet everything is exactly how it appears. Peters did an amazing job crafting this world, and the twists were spot on. The elements of Sleeping Beauty and Princess and the Pea were easy to spot yet were not the focal point of the story. As expected, the book is clean in language and content. I highly recommend, particulary to readers who love mysteries, characters with hidden pasts, and new twists on familiar tales.

While reading Imprisoned Slumber, I felt delightfully enveloped in a story full of both fairytales, and mystery! The writing is so witty, and so many lines during the hero and heroine’s exchanges made me laugh out loud.

Mirelle is such a fun, and unique character - her feistiness, and her love of thievery, makes it so fun to read from her perspective. Who would have thought a thief would be so relatable!? Haha!

There are so many layers to Evander, and I loved getting to know him! One minute he’s charming, the next he’s mysterious, making him an all around lovable and intriguing character!

This was the best Sleeping Beauty retelling I’ve read. (Loved having it combined with Princess and the Pea!) There were so many twists and turns, and it turned out to be an entirely different story than I anticipated, but in the best possible way. So many scenes left me gawking at the direction the story was taking!

Imprisoned Slumber by Camille Peters
When Mirelle dares to lay her hands upon a forbidden object, she’s swept into a trial to determine the heir to the throne—one left vacant after the previous prince vanished without a trace...
This one is a retelling of Sleeping Beauty with just a tad of The Princess and the Pea. This is a slow and dreamy tale where the reader has to figure out what's real and what's not as the characters do. Definitely the sort of book where you feel you need to start over at the end to try and figure out exactly what happened! Very nice twist. It did feel a bit slow at times, as there is lots of introspection rather than action. I loved Evander and Mirelle and figuring out the mystery of their relationship. Would recommend if you're in the mood for something on the slower and more puzzling side!

What a unique and confusing perspective, but Camille Peters delivered it with aplomb

I'm grateful that I had the opportunity to read this book over the weekend, because I'm not sure if it would have worked as well in snatches of reading during the week. It was a huge risk to write a book where not even your narrator knows which world is real, what the truth is, or what the rules of the game are. And that risk paid off! Despite my severe dislike of the protagonist in the beginning (SO MUCH pride and stubbornness), I absolutely adored this book. I literally couldn't put it down. However, I do need to note that there were several minor editing errors throughout it. I know this book got delayed, and given the plot worked out, I can forgive those for slipping through, but something to look for in the future. I AM curious if it'll stand up to a reread in the future, though.

Once upon a dream, Mirelle finds a mystery she cannot resist.

I'm at a loss for words for how deeply I love this story! From the first, it felt like I had tumbled into the middle of a wildly complicated mystery. With hints of stories like Princess and the Pea and Beauty and the Beast, this is perhaps the first book that I've read where the iconic song from Sleeping Beauty actually fits so very well. Each page built the story, and I felt just as confused as Mirelle about what was "real" anymore and just as intent on sleuthing out clues to what could possibly be going on. But then it finally "clicks." All the pieces rapidly fall into place like the memories she's forgotten. And while we don't get to know a lot of the "before", the sweet, beautiful way the story wraps up is more than perfect for me.

This story had so much potential. The premise was interesting, mysteries compelling, and magic intriguing. Unfortunately, the editing was so lacking that it really got in the way of enjoying the book. There were glaring grammatical errors, repeated sentences and words, and many instances where I would have thought an editor would have recommended a different approach to improve the experience for the reader. I love a good puzzle in a book, but unfortunately all the pieces didn’t fit together in the end, and I was left with unanswered questions at its conclusion. I am a fan of Camille Peters, and could easily see this being a great book to add to others that I have enjoyed from her, but without the editing fixes, it sadly falls flat.

A really interesting mash up of Sleeping Beauty and the Princess and the Pea.

This was a book of many twists and turns - some more obvious than others, but all of them very fun. I really loved the concept of the dream world and how that played into the Sleeping Beauty element of the story.

Mirelle was a very interesting character with how charming and sassy she was - her banter with Evander was very entertaining. As for Evander himself, it took sometime peeling back the many layers to really find out who the real Evander was which was one of the many mysteries of the book but it was well worth the journey.

This book introduced a brand new world within Camille Peter's books, which I already find really intriguing, and hope that we may get to visit again in a future book.

What an absolutely intriguing read! I was hooked from the beginning, I’ll admit a little confused as well, but I desperately needed to know the answer to the mysteries that were interwoven within the story. Not what I expected at all but I was pleasantly surprised. The story did at times feel slow, I was just so ready to know what had happened and what was going on that I wanted answers like YESTERDAY haha but the author took her sweet time in bringing things to light which added to the mystery but was borderline dragging. STILL I thoroughly enjoyed the roller coaster of secrets, memories and dreams within this one.

A heart warming romance filled with mystery, witty banter and a dreamlike haze that added to the intrigue!

Twists and turns aplenty!

A fascinating woman who is my polar opposite. Running into danger and thrill seeking, Mirelle has such an adventurous spirit. I love her magic. That would be an awesome power.

This author is very descriptive. I get a tad bored sometimes and end up skimming entire paragraphs for pertinent information. I know some people love the long descriptions, and it is a wonderful thing when I read it in a poem, but i want to skip to the meat of the story in my novels.

If you like the movie "Inception", i think you will enjoy many aspects of this book... at least, that was the vibe I got.

The twists were fun!

The book felt more mystery than fairytale. An intriguing concept with dreams within dreams. Love the thief stealing the princes heart concept. It did drag on a little long for me. I kept forgetting I hadn’t finished it yet.

The parts I really wanted to read - her forgotten memories of how they actually met - were only ever partially revealed in remembered snippets, and I missed the opportunity to read those in full! Would have loved to have that story told in full before the dreams began - though I see how that would have messed with the mystery.

This is paced VERY slow!
It was almost a DNF for me as I unfortunately felt like I was imprisoned in an unending slumber.
The pieces and idea were great. I just there had been a lot more time with the couple together either talking or doing something instead of walking around and around and around the castle.

A cozy, dreamy of forgotten memories, secrets, and curses that blurs the line between reality and illusion. I'm captivated by this creative fairytale featuring a sleeping curse, a dreamworld, a thief who reads memories through touch, and a mysterious prince trapped in a dream. The chemistry between Evander and Mirelle felt wholesome.

Somewhat confusing because I know this is not part of a series (I have read all of Camille’s books) but also alone it is weird. It kinda reminds me of ‘Revert’ another of Camille’s books but it was a good story just wanted a little more clarity

Dream or reality? Mirelle faces a mystery that she must solve or everyone may all stay asleep in a dream. A mashup of Princess and the pea combined with sleeping beauty. Forgotten memories resurface throughout the story making it difficult for her to know who to trust. With thieves, princes and magic involved what more could a girl ask for?

I think the idea has promise, but I found this book a bit confusing and introspective. I think having their memories be missing made it harder to pull the writing off.
