As the accusations swirled around Claire like a storm, she was trapped in a nightmare of suspicion and fear. Every glance, every whispered conversation seemed to weigh her down with the burden of guilt she couldn't shake. Her once idyllic life shattered, and she began questioning everything she thought she knew about her husband, Stephen.
Haunted by the memory of that fateful encounter, Claire's mind raced with possibilities. Was Stephen capable of such betrayal? Could he truly believe she was capable of murder? The doubts gnawed at her sanity, threatening to consume her with each passing day.
Meanwhile, the shadow of doubt grew darker as the bodies piled up. Was Claire a victim or a master manipulator? Was she being framed, or was she the puppeteer pulling the strings of death?
Caught in a web of lies and deception, Claire knew she had to fight to clear her name. But with each twist and turn, the truth seemed to slip further from her grasp. As the line between friend and foe blurred, Claire realized that the only way to survive was to uncover the deadly secrets hidden beneath the facade of her perfect life.
Stephen felt the weight of his secrets like a lead anchor, dragging him deeper into the abyss of deception. With the impending audit looming over him, the pressure to maintain his facade of success was suffocating. Claire's desire to start a family only added to his inner turmoil. How could he bring a child into a world built on lies and deceit?
The thought of revealing his true self to Claire filled Stephen with dread. The risk of losing everything he had worked hard for was too great to bear. He couldn't jeopardize his carefully crafted image, not now when his plan was finally in motion.
Meanwhile, Jessica's love for Stephen burned fiercely, driving her to desperate measures to eliminate Claire. Discovering Stephen in the arms of another woman shattered her world, igniting a fire of jealousy and possessiveness within her.
Determined to be the permanent woman in Stephen's life, Jessica plotted her next move with calculated precision. She knew she had to eliminate Claire, but the question how far was she willing to go to secure her place by Stephen's side? As her obsession consumed her, Jessica descended into a dark abyss of manipulation and betrayal, willing to do whatever it took to win Stephen's heart.

From the outside Claire and Stephen had the perfect marriage. Both have paying jobs, affluent neighborhood, involved in the community. What goes on behind closed doors sometimes needs an escape!

Claire leaves a meeting for a community fundraiser and suddenly the one woman she doesn’t like ends up dead. Then, the bodies start piling up and they all have a connection to Claire and Stephen. I will give you two pieces of advice (1) there are several players and multiple POV’s. Stick with it - it is worth it for the ending and (2) so not read too many reviews or spoilers. This is a hard book to review without telling you anything

Just know that I found myself empathizing with Claire and almost claustrophobic with frustration and there is a twist at the end that will be worth the wait.

Wow! This book was SO GOOD! Right away, we are thrown into this mysterious situation, and we have no idea what’s going on, but it quickly becomes clear that nothing is what it seems.

This book was written from many different points of view. In fact I was surprised by just how many different voices there were throughout the chapters but each perspective had something very important to add and if you’re paying attention, you just might catch what’s really going on under the surface.

Absolutely no one seemed trustworthy. In fact, most of them didn’t even seem to have a solid grasp on reality or morals, for that matter, and I LOVED that about them! There was so much scandal, and quite a few characters were truly unhinged. It made for a fascinating and intricate web of secrets, lies, and an overall arching mystery that had me on the edge of my seat the whole time!

I had suspicions pretty early in the book about what was really going on, and I’m super proud to say I was right, but the way it was revealed was so masterfully done that I wasn’t let down at all that I had figured it out. There were still plenty of shockers and one part that I totally didn’t see coming at all and had me stumped throughout. I can’t wait to read more from this author!

Stay tuned for my post tomorrow with the author herself, as we learn why she chose to write in this genre – and boy, am I glad she did!!

Abyss, shadow of doubt, added layers…

Many women want Stephen for themselves. However, he has been married to Claire for 10 years. When murders start accumulating around them, both Stephen and Claire will become suspects.

Their lives will quickly unravel. Claire has deeply rooted secrets, firmly established and difficult to change. And yes, Stephen also has secrets!

Just who is giving us the correct information? Is ANYONE credible?

This one had a meandering pace until the last 50pp, when it revved up in speed. The final pages enlivened the plot and led to the shocking ending. The ending was surprising but logical and kept me guessing until the final reveal! This ending determined my rating.

When I first started this book, I didn’t know what to expect and was not sure where it was headed! Not all is as it seems! Appearances can be deceiving!

A tale about greed, manipulation, uncertainties, chaos, dread, and facades.

Your anticipation should build as the details dribble out!

‘It’s probably going to sound crazy to you, but I felt as though someone was watching me all the time, night and day.’

This is the second book by the author, and it captivates readers with its intricate plot and compelling characters.

The story centers around Claire, whose seemingly perfect life unravels as murder accusations cast a dark shadow over her. Forced to question her husband Stephen's loyalty and her own innocence, Claire finds herself trapped in a nightmare of suspicion. As bodies pile up and buried secrets come to light, Claire struggles to clear her name while Stephen grapples with the weight of his troubled past. Meanwhile, Jessica, driven by an obsessive jealousy, meticulously plots to eliminate Claire and secure her place in Stephen’s life, weaving a deadly web of manipulation and betrayal that keeps the tension high.

I thoroughly enjoyed this psychological thriller. The author skillfully keeps readers guessing, and I found myself constantly reevaluating who the true perpetrator could be. Although I was often led astray by clever red herrings, I ultimately pieced together the mystery just before the final reveal, which heightened my satisfaction with the story.

The chapters are short, creating a brisk pace that compels you to keep turning the pages. The author expertly balances suspense with character development, ensuring that readers are emotionally invested in Claire’s journey. If you’re looking for a gripping thriller filled with unexpected twists and a thoughtful exploration of mental health issues, this book is a must-read.

I would like to extend my gratitude to the author for providing an e-ARC of the book.

A Broken Reflection is best classified as a domestic thriller. The story revolves around Claire and Stephen, wife and husband who are approaching their 10th wedding anniversary. Shortly before their anniversary, however, things are not great between the couple, obvious from how the story begins and Claire flashes back to previous moments. It isn’t long before the reader learns of Stephen’s infidelity, and the reader gets a deeper insight into Claire and her mental health. As the story progresses, murders begin taking place of women that one or both of them know, and the police narrow their focus on the couple. In addition, we meet additional characters who give us further insight into Claire, both of her past and her relationship with her husband. Told from alternating viewpoints, readers get a sense of feeling and insight from multiple characters present throughout the story as readers attempt to get to the ultimate question of “Who murdered these women?”

Opinion:
Upon beginning this book, I was immediately aware of the conversational tone of the novel. The chapters are told somewhat through alternating viewpoints, though primarily through Claire. As you read, it is as if you are listening to her speak to you, or as if you are privy to her innermost thoughts, which is a pleasant change from the writing of many novels. That being said, her innermost thoughts tend to be quite scattered and unpredictable, evidenced from the beginning of the novel, as she dress shops for a charity event and her thoughts drift from numerous topics and she stops to reflect on how her “thoughts had wandered off again.” Her thoughts continue to be scattered throughout, again with her seeming to pause and realize this as she speaks with Mom on the phone that her “mind was distracted now, focusing on Mom”. As the reader, I found myself having to reread portions to ensure I hadn’t missed a part, as Claire’s scattered thoughts leave you feeling confused as to the events taking place. This novel, though short, did take a while before it got going and you got to the crime/mystery of the book. The beginning felt very scattered to me through Claire’s thoughts and actions, but upon meeting the other characters throughout the story, more pieces fell into place and it made me wonder if the scattered thoughts were purposefully written by the author so the reader could get an insight into Claire’s mental well-being.

I felt the dialogue shift as Jessica was introduced, and again as Mousy was introduced. I was surprised that Mousy, a 10 year old girl, had such an extensive vocabulary, especially when compared to the adults in the story. The way young Mousy describes her feelings and thoughts as she eventually loses both parents, “It appears each hardship made the next one harder to bear”, sounds as if it would come from an individual at least twice her age, though you quickly realize that Mousy had had a sad world of living in her short years.

Once you have the opportunity to meet the other characters, the story does begin to pick up pace. It is about that time that the murders begin. Once the pace begins to pick up, it transforms into a book that you aren’t ready to put down and want to reach the ending of, not only to answer the question of, “Who is murdering these women?”, but also so that you can get a sense of closure for the characters. Yet, I felt the ending could have been more detailed. When you finally get to the murders and the detectives are investigating, the novel resorts back to Claire and her jumbled thoughts, and then, back to the crime to be solved. It felt like the actual crime solving was an afterthought to the story. The ending felt rushed and left you feeling incomplete, though it was able to answer all of your questions about the characters and, ultimately, the crime that was committed.

I felt that the description of this book was misleading because although there were three murders that had to be solved, I felt the real questions fell within the relationship between Claire and Stephen, and with them, the secondary characters of Jessica, Cole, and Mousy. These interactions between characters is really what made the novel a good read and any questions you wondered about while reading were answered by the end.

All in all, I would have originally said I’d give this novel a 2.5/5 when I started it, due to the jumbled thoughts of Claire and feeling like I’d missed an important selection. However, upon finishing, I feel this is a 4 out of 5 once you reach the end, thanks to the character development of all characters. I really enjoyed the various perspectives, which really allowed you to get a sense of each character, each of which was drastically different from the other.

A Broken Reflection presents an absorbing investigation with multiple viewpoints and leads but ends with a resolution that is disappointing, overdone, and does very little to make this variation unique or stand out from others.

Claire and Stephen seem to have an idyllic affluent married suburban life but it's all surface. There are cracks in their home life that are becoming more evident. Stephen has had many extramarital affairs and Claire is being seen by many colleagues and acquaintances as unstable and temperamental. Stephen’s infidelities and Claire's characteristics become more evident when a woman known to the couple has been found murdered. Claire is seen as a primary suspect especially when it turns out that the deceased woman was Stephen’s mistress. As bodies pile up, evidence gathers, and Claire and Stephen become more suspicious towards each other, Claire conducts her own investigation to clear her name. Meanwhile a very devious pair observe the events with their own agendas. Jessica has a dangerous fixation for Stephen and Cole is stalking the object of his affection: Claire.

There are some engaging bits, particularly as the characters are introduced and the investigation consumes them. Since the book is told from multiple viewpoints starting with Claire's, we already see the imperfections but not outright. Our sympathies move back and forth between Claire and Stephen depicting one another as abuser and victim, innocent and guilty. This causes the Reader discomfort and suspicion as we search for the real answers.

We peer into the points of view from various characters and we experience quite a few obsessions and potential motives. No one in this book comes off particularly well or likable. When the murders occur, it's not necessarily a question of whodunnit and is more who wouldn't do it?

By far the two most intriguing characters are Jessica and Cole. It says something in a cast of unstable dangerous people, that these two are the worst. Jessica is conniving and manipulative in her approach while Cole is more immature, having an almost adolescent crush on Claire. They take different pursuits towards the objects of their affections. These two are not a mentally well duo.

Unfortunately as interesting as the investigation is, the resolution is every bit as disappointing. Because of spoilers, it won't be revealed but let's just say that it's a cliche that is often found in soap operas and Psychological Thriller. There is a final twist that salvages the reveal somewhat, but it undermines what had been revealed so far and could have done with it.

The ending of A Broken Reflection shatters what would have been a clear image of a good suspense novel into pieces.

Shelly Patel's "A Broken Reflection" is an engrossing psychological thriller that expertly intertwines suspense with intricate character dynamics. The story plunges readers into the life of Claire, whose once perfect existence is upended by shocking accusations and mounting suspicion. As Claire finds herself at the center of a murder investigation, her life spirals into chaos, forcing her to question her husband Stephen's loyalty and integrity. Patel skillfully constructs a narrative rife with tension and uncertainty. Claire's descent from a seemingly idyllic life to a nightmarish struggle is portrayed with a compelling intensity that keeps readers engaged. The author deftly explores themes of trust and betrayal, with Claire's emotional turmoil and paranoia adding depth to her character. Stephen, Claire's husband, is a masterfully complex figure. His struggle to maintain a facade of success while concealing his personal failings introduces a palpable sense of dread. Patel's portrayal of Stephen's internal conflict and the pressure of his double life enriches the novel's exploration of deception and its consequences. The character of Jessica provides a darkly fascinating counterpart to Claire and Stephen. Jessica's obsessive love for Stephen and her willingness to commit desperate acts to secure her place in his life add an element of chilling unpredictability. Her actions and motivations are intricately drawn, revealing Patel's skill in creating morally ambiguous characters whose choices drive the plot's twist. The novel's pacing is adeptly handled, with Patel maintaining a high level of suspense throughout. The narrative's progression through various perspectives and its exploration of multiple subplots effectively keeps the reader guessing. The ambiguity surrounding Claire's role in the unfolding drama- whether she is a victim, a manipulator, or both- creates a gripping atmosphere that heightens the novel's intrigue. In "A Broken Reflection," Shelly Patel delivers a captivating thriller that delves into the dark recesses of human nature. The novel's strong character development, intense psychological drama, and unpredictable twists make it a standout read in the genre. Patel's ability to weave a complex and engaging story ensures that "A Broken Reflection" will leave readers both thrilled and contemplative.

A Broken Reflection involves several characters: Claire, Stephen, and Jessica. Claire is our main character in this book however Jessica is her best friend and Stephen is her husband. There are a lot of secrets and trails in this book, which keeps you guessing and trying to figure out what is going on before you get to the end. Claire is a very relatable FMC she is a married woman who was trying to have kids with her husband at one point however nature decided something else and now they are settling into their middle-aged life childless. Claire seems to have blackouts or periods when she does not remember what happens.
Jessica, her best friend, is not the nicest friend as she talks about how Claire is paranoid over the littlest things which may be true however a good friend would not call it paranoia and definitely help their friend with that issue. Jessica seems to not really help but she has her opinions. We also get introduced to a secondary character but not really named Mousy. Mousy is a child who talks about her relationship with her stepmother Linda and her dad, she does not like her stepmother Linda. She also has to deal with Tommy who is her stepbrother and a perverted child who is trying to touch his stepsister in a inappropriate way. And then she is left as an orphan when her dad dies.
Finally in the book there is Stephen. Stephen seems like a normal husband and nice and loves his wife, however he’s got some questionable business practices, and you are as the reader left not knowing who he really is.
The writing in this book is engaging and all of the characters have no secrets about the other characters and there are questions about each of the characters as your reading which is very engaging and makes the reader want to read till the end. This is an interesting mystery/thriller that leaves you guessing until the end. If you are a fan of thrillers, mysteries, or psychological thrillers this one is for you!

In A Broken Reflection, readers are plunged into a storm of lies, betrayal, and a fierce battle for survival. From the beginning, Claire follows the swirling accusations complicated and trapping her into a heavy cloud of fear and doubt. She powerfully describes her life falling apart, but she declines to give us any certainty or to release us from the burden of her suspicions.

The thing that stands out with the character development is Claire and how she deals with her distrust of Stephen. As the section brings these characters’ seemingly perfect lives to the end, people start wondering if there is more behind them than they do. Stephen’s internal conflict is obvious: the weight of his secrets causes tension that will keep you involved. What is relatable is his anxiety about losing everything he has worked for.

Jessica is also very captivating and possesses the darker side of obsession. But it’s chilling, the way her struggle differs from Claire’s slide into jealousy and manipulation. Jessica is both terrifying and captivating as the author makes love toxic through the skillful use of imagery.

The story zooms along, there are plenty of twists you won’t expect. As the body count increases, so does the question of Who's the victim, and who's watching? The plot just keeps taking unexpected turns and just when you think you have it all figured out, it takes yet another curveball until you read the last chapter.

A Broken Reflection is in short a brilliant example of suspense and intrigue. It unflinchingly probes at trust, love, and what one would go to extremes to preserve their life and secrets. If you’re a fan of psychological thrillers, this book will have you questioning everything you read through to the end. Highly recommended!

A baffling series of murders are all connected to one couple.

A Broken Reflection by Shelly M. Patel is a dark and baffling tale of mystery and murder. When women connected to either Claire Bell or her husband, Stephen, become the victims of murder, the police take note and start asking very probing questions. Claire soon finds herself suspected of being a serial killer.

Claire is the main character in this twisty tale of murder and deception and is as baffled as the police about who is killing women she has some connection to. She’s a mild and amazingly forgiving woman, especially considering her knowledge of her husband’s infidelities. However, she wouldn’t hurt a fly, let alone another human being. But why is she missing great blocks of time from her life? And what’s going on then that she doesn’t remember?

The plot moves quickly, using multiple points of view to reveal the story. The reader learns early on that Claire is being watched, but it could be any number of mysterious people. While she wavers back and forth about her husband’s cheating, the killer seems to take those matters in hand for her as each one of her rivals becomes a victim. The different narrators all have an axe to grind regarding Claire, and the descriptions of their relationships with her vary greatly – almost as if they are not dealing with the same person.

The story is easy to read, but there were a few places that required re-reading to figure out what the author was trying to say, and there were a couple of awkward transitions between points of view that were confusing. Still, the story was interesting, entertaining, and short.

I recommend A BROKEN REFLECTION to readers of psychological or domestic thrillers.

As a busy mom of two, I don’t always get a lot of uninterrupted reading time, but when a book pulls me in this hard, I make the time! From the very first chapter, I was hooked. The story drops you right into a mystery where nothing is what it seems, and I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough to figure out what was really going on.

One thing that made this book so unique was the multiple points of view. I was surprised by just how many different perspectives we got, but every single one added something valuable. And let me tell you—if you pay close attention, you might just pick up on some hidden clues!

What really made this story stand out, though, was how untrustworthy every character felt. No one had a solid grip on reality (or ethics, honestly), and I absolutely loved that. The secrets, lies, and jaw-dropping twists kept me completely invested. Some of these characters were truly unhinged, and that just made the mystery even better!

Now, I had my suspicions early on (mom instincts for the win!), and I was right about some things. But even though I had a hunch, the way everything was revealed was so well done that it didn’t take away from the experience at all. There were still plenty of surprises—and one twist in particular that completely caught me off guard!

I already know I’ll be reading more from this author, and I can’t wait to share more tomorrow when I chat with her about why she chose to write in this genre. And let’s just say, I’m really glad she did!

Claire feels like someone is watching her, peering im on everything like a pervert, but every time she turns around nobody is there.
She also has a premonition, like an omen telling her something bad is going to happen.
She skipped half work day to attend a charity ball that Phyllis is in charge of organizing, as the wife of Stephen’s long-time friend and business partner, she had to attend and play nice.
Claire, Jessica and Mousy three friends, each of them with their own troubled pasts.
When the news arrives that Phyllis has been killed, the secrets start to unveil. According to the police, Claire is a persona of interest, she didn’t care for Phyllis and everyone knew that. As she tried to continue with her life, there’s another dead woman in their circle.
The first thought while reading this book is: the suspense is killing me! I need to know how it ends, I couldn’t put it down.
Great second book by Shelly M Patel, mystery and suspense author. If you like the genre, this book is worth checking out.
Can’t wait for the next one!
Thank you Shelly for the advanced copy!

This is a good psychological thriller. The narrative follows a number of characters with first person viewpoints. Anticipation is built as there are many hints included, the characters thinking something is off, not right. Since the narrative is first person, we get observations from each character, not objective information. We wonder who Claire is, really. Which character is truly giving us correct information?

The narrative style may be familiar to some readers, as it was to me, so the reveal of the truth near the end was not a surprise. Even though I had figured out what was going on, the story kept me reading. I was glad I did as there was another twist after the general reveal which was a surprise to me.

This is a good novel for readers who like murder mysteries with an unusual plot construction and a surprising twist or two.

I received a complimentary egalley of this book through Partners in Crime Book Tours. My comments are an independent and honest review.

This book was good. It was my 1st by this author, but I definitely plan on reading more.

Claire's perfect life starts to unravel when she suspects her husband, Stephen, of cheating, and a woman she's on the charity ball committee with is murdered. She becomes the prime suspect. Two other women are found dead, and they both also seem to have ties to Claire and Stephen. It seems Stephen has some dark secrets he hasn't shared. Claire's loneliness and paranoia start to consume her. How will she prove her innocence?

This was a suspenseful, entertaining read that definitely had me turning pages. It was short and totally bingeable. There was a lot going on and a lot of different characters, which made the story interesting. The characters all tie together with a jaw-dropping twist. I enjoyed this psychological thriller, and I would definitely recommend it.

Thank you to author Shelly Patel for a gifted copy of this book.

I thought this was a fun and fast paced domestic thriller.

Claire knows her husband has been cheating on her. As his mistresses keep turning up dead, she finds herself to be the main suspect.

There were a lot of characters in this one, and it took me a little bit to get the hang of who everyone was and how they were tied together. I will say that I did not figure out that plot twist, and I was pleasantly surprised to find out.

The story moves along quickly, and I was able to read it in one after. It is a good fall thriller to cozy up with.

A Broken Reflection is tagged as mystery and suspense. And it proves so true.

There are multiple characters with their own points of view and boy are there a lot of skeletons in their closets. As each struggles to sort out truth from lie, people start to die.

The suspense was intense. I didn’t know who was lying, what was true and all those other who, what and why’s. If I was one to wring my hands, I would have. It was a good thing the chapters were short. It made it easy for me to power through this book so I could satisfy my curiosity and catch my breath. The ending was so worth it.

I received a complimentary copy. My review is voluntarily given.
