Grief drove them away. But starting again comes at a price.
When Melanie and Gareth Sayer move with their daughter to a Welsh coastal village, it looks like the perfect place to heal old wounds. The sea air, the new business, the promise of a quieter life… but will the past let go?
Their new beginning is soon poisoned by the return of an old school friend. Gareth is unsettled by the reappearance of Delyth Powell, while Melanie finds her kind and welcoming. Then a message arrives, one that only Gareth understands, and it's clear Delyth knows a secret from his past. Something he has kept hidden for years.
As tensions rise and loyalties fracture, Melanie no longer knows who to her husband, whose temper is flaring under the pressure, or the woman who claims to be her confidant. And when the truth finally comes out, it will shatter everything.
Perfect for fans of Lisa Jewell and Adele Parks, No Place to Hide is a gripping psychological thriller about buried secrets, dangerous friendships and how well we really know the people we love.
No Place to Hide was originally self-published under the title Cry Baby.
I’m a big fan of Rebecca Griffiths writing so I was thrilled to see her new book Cry Baby on Amazon last week! I knew it would be a gripping #stayhome treat for me so I downloaded it and got stuck in immediately.
Melanie and Gareth are making a new life in Wales with their daughter Georgie. They want to get away from bad memories and hope that their new business venture, renovating a country pub in Gareth’s old home town, will provide the fresh start that the whole family needs. But almost at once their marriage hits snags when their visions for the future clash and secrets from Gareth’s past threaten to destroy their newfound happiness.
It’s always a mistake to make a fresh start in a place that you have history in and Pencarew certainly spews up some vicious village gossip when Gareth moves back with Melanie and Georgie. Melanie is left to get on with the renovation work whilst Gareth continues to work in London during the week to keep the finances topped up and that alone, I knew, was enough to test any marriage! Never mind the appearance of a creepy old “friend” who starts hanging around Melanie with a rather alarming regularity and interest in Georgie and a bedraggled stranger who always seems to be there, watching…So the tension began to creep along quite nicely for me as I attempted to work out why everything was starting to go wrong for poor Melanie who had surely suffered enough already! And that tautness continued as the dream life they had expected started to fall apart…to a life threatening extent!
Rebecca Griffiths really writes just so beautifully in this cleverly crafted and utterly gripping psychological thriller. She creates a convincingly believable storyline in a setting that projected off the page to almost become a character in its own right-atmospheric, stunning but often brutal with its hostile surroundings and savage beauty. I got such a sense of place whilst reading that I was physically there alongside Mel as she fought to maintain the family life she needed.
And that ending!! Well, let’s just call me shocked and scrape me off the floor!! I love it when an author manages to stun me out of the blue and so this was just the cherry on top of that iced cake for me! I loved Cry Baby! It was intensely dark, disturbing at times, with a shocker of a denouement that I hadn’t been expecting. It certainly lived up to my expectations (possibly exceeding them!) and I can’t wait to read more from this very talented writer. Plus I have to mention that cover-beautifully creepy and absolutely stunning, a very appropriate artwork to compliment this book.
Tore through this and kept me busy while being stuck inside at home. Bloody brilliant thriller with great twists and turns. Love Wales and will have to go back when all this is over.
Love this author's books and was thrilled to find this on Amazon Kindle! Another great pageturner with brilliant twists. Looking forward to the next one.
This was an exhilarating read, always questioned who the real “baddie “was, characters you love to hate .Fantastic plot , kept me guessing until the end .
Thoroughly enjoyed reading Cry Baby. Rebecca writes beautifully, her stories are well crafted with interesting characters. I spent the whole book guessing what was going on and who could be trusted. In the end I stayed up late to finish this book as I couldn’t put it down. The way she describes Wales I can just picture exactly the scene and I get lost in her stories. Another fantastic read.
Oh wow this novel kept me on the edge of my seat!! It was so nerve wracking and you just don't know what's going to happen lol so can't wait to read my next novel of Rebecca's absolutely brilliant! 😊
I got this book because it had such good reviews! Personally I found it boring, and skipped a lot of it. I've no idea what was ' Tense' about it , just some women , with an axe to grind , most of it was taken up with the with what they were eating most days! dragging out of a poisoning , not for me! Read some smashing thrillers lately, there was nothing thrilling about this, sorry writer
I have just finished reading this amazing book. What a story! What an ending! Tense, engaging and utterly irresistible...I can highly recommend this new book from an author that keeps delivering book after book of excellent thrillers.
I can clearly see Cry Baby as a television drama! Please, someone commission this for tv.
Oh I really enjoyed this book. Did not take me long to read which also says how good it was! Plenty of plot twists and keeping you on your toes. Loved it and will read more from this author.
Oh I do like a psychological thriller with a twist tale and this one did not disappoint. Who is telling the truth?? A really fast paced page turner to get you through these dark nights.
Ehhh, this was okay, not great. Giving this one a 3.4 because the MC Melanie and her naivety was so frustrating at times. The premise pulled me in at first and there were moments where I was intrigued and wanted to see where things were going but honestly, it jumped around a lot and not always in a way that added suspense. It was more like in a “wait, did I miss something?” kind of way. There were also quite a few plot holes that made it hard to fully buy into what was happening. I hung in there because I wanted it to come together in the end, but it never hit the thriller payoff for me. It wasn’t bad, just a little messy and underwhelming. The story follows Melanie and her husband Gareth as they plan to renovate an old Welsch pub. Gareth works away most of the week back in London and is only home on the weekends while Melanie is overseeing the work on the pub. The couple share a 7 yr old daughter who had a twin that died 4 yrs earlier. The jury is still out on how the little girl died but I take it there was some kind of accident where a car hit her. I wish the author had delved more into that story, but she didn’t and that is one of the holes I was referring to. Melanie meets a weird lady named Delyth who used to know Gareth back in school. Gareth hates this woman and is awful to her every time he sees her. It’s clear that Gareth is hiding something from Melanie regarding his past with Delyth but neither Gareth nor Delyth will admit to it. Later, the reader finds out what the big secret was (very holey and unlikely) and Melanie makes the decision to leave Gareth. Only later does she find out the true nature of the situation. I think I enjoyed this book up until the end when the plot started to become a little farfetched. This was a decent enough read but not one that’s going to stick with me.
I really wanted to enjoy No Place to Hide by Rebecca Griffiths, but unfortunately it just didn’t work for me.
By the halfway point, I was still trying to figure out where the story was going or what it was truly about. The premise felt stretched thin, and it started to seem like the entire plot revolved around one person’s obsessive attempt to disrupt a marriage—which, for me, wasn’t enough to carry a full novel.
I also struggled with the main character, Melanie. At times, her decisions were hard to understand, and I found myself wishing she showed a bit more awareness and strength in handling what was happening around her.
Overall, this one missed the mark for me. I kept waiting for a turning point or deeper development that never quite came. Sadly, it ended up feeling like a waste of time.
Another brilliant and atmospheric offering from Rebecca Griffiths. Having read her preceding books one thing I love about her writing is her ability to create a mystical and intriguing ambience that keep me on edge throughout. Her characters draw me in and I regularly challenge my own opinion on them throughout and can't rely on my first impressions or instincts to be correct about them!! She is the Queen of big twists and Cry Baby took me by surprise at the very last lap!! I now look forward to reading Sweet Sacrifice! I implore everyone to read and support Rebecca and her fantastic books!!
Interesting book covering the different relationships and problems that come with telling lies, or failing to tell the truth. The ending was quite a surprise - didn't see that coming!
Good plot, likeable characters, sticks in your head even after you've finished the book!
The plot was good, believable and had good characters in. I worked out early on the twist, there are grammatical errors in there but enjoyed the book. It's a good read. It was a book that I've kept thinking about 2 books later.
