The Kimberley Aboriginal Law and Culture Centre (KALACC) published a major work titled NEW A STORY OF LAW AND CULTURE AND THE FIGHT FOR SELF-DETERMINATION IN THE KIMBERLEY in 2006. KALACC is the Kimberley Region’s Peak Indigenous Law and Culture Centre. Based in Fitzroy Crossing, they support the traditional cultural practices of the 30 language groups of the Kimberley Region. Incorporated in 1985, KALACC has a proud history of advocating for culturally based self-determination for the Kimberley, the northernmost of the nine regions of Western Australia. The Kimberley was one of the earliest settled parts of Australia, with the first arrivals landing about 41,000 years ago. Supporting the 30 Aboriginal language groups of the Kimberley is their cultural maintenance mission. KALACC encourages the participation of these groups in song, story and dance, as they keep their culture strong through sharing their knowledge with people through performance and through cultural practices. By providing a highly informative account of cultural practices and beliefs, historical events and Aboriginal visions for the future of the region, NEW LEGEND makes an important contribution to the development of that greater understanding. This is especially the case in that it speaks to both non-Indigenous people and to Aboriginal Australians to illuminate aspects of culture and history which traditional elders and contemporary leaders believe are inadequately understood. In all those respects, this book represents a significant signpost along the difficult road to Reconciliation. This beautiful, oversized book is filled with hundreds of photographs along with important history.
