When a museum executive secretary, who barely tolerates men, has a run in with an infamous BDSM Master, Neil Cannon, a man who lives to discipline women, there's little she can do about it. Why?
The Master thinks Charlotte, a.k.a Charlie is her kink-loving, totally outrageous, and continually stirring-up-trouble twin sister. And after what Charlie just did, he has to keep thinking that. At least until she can find a way to climb out of the huge mess her well-meaning intentions have landed her in. She’ll take the punishments the Master intends for her twin. She’ll even put up with him and his misogynistic antics if it means she’ll be able to unlock the secrets that will save her family. All she has to do is behave like her sister. How hard could it be to emulate a fearless, over-confident, rebellious woman, with highly questionable sexual standards?
Neil’s been waiting months for the chance to deal with this audacious sub who's been jacking up the testosterone levels of his vanilla crew whenever her sports car needed maintenance. That’s why he made the service call himself. He’s confident she won’t be yanking his chain, because if she tries he’s prepared to yank it right back.
Or so he thought until she turns out to be different than what he expected her to be. She starts pushing buttons he didn’t know he had. She’s flipping internal switches, lighting things up, creating a whole new level of dominant need he’s determined to explore, enjoy, and satisfy.
Unfortunately, before either of them can get a handle on the D/s chemistry exploding between them, she takes off. It’s then he discovers that she’s invited a part of his past, that he’s promised to steer clear of, right to his front door.
Now, in order to keep her safe, he must find her, and when he does he has to keep her close. Too close for either one of them to escape the inevitable truth.
“Sometimes the best pleasures in life are found at the end of a person’s comfort zone,” whispered the Master to the one woman he’s dead set on collaring…

Wow! I'm glad it's summer vacation because I stayed up till almost 2am to finish this, but I guess that's what I get for starting it at 10pm. I am struggling for what to write cause I don't want to give anything away. This book and Dom just blew me away. I loved Master Nick, but Charlie had to grow on me a little. I liked her more when she was just her and not pretending to be her sister, Cat. There's action, suspense, a bad guy, family, hot sex, smokin' hot Dom, BDSM, laughter, love, romance. It had it all. There were several places were I was expecting the ending, but Ms. Murphy kept surprising me with more.
The only reason it's four and not five stars is because the beginning dragged just a little. Once I got to about 25-30% it was all downhill. I'm really looking forward to her sister's book. That's going to be nothing but fireworks. I hope the action takes place during Charlie's book.
This was my first time reading Riley Murphy. I actually bought PUSHED first then realized there was a book before it so I decided to start that one.
Cat & Charlie are twins. Identical twins. Only thing different is that Charlie got a tattoo of a dove on her *ss in college because Cat was experiencing the college life with guys but telling them that her name was Charlie. To make it stop, Charlie got a tattoo because Cat has a fear of needles and would never get one.
The story starts off with Charlie taking/stealing money and some artifact from a guy she drugged who is now looking for her. At the same time, Cat has issues with the owner of the BDSM club she goes to so perfect solution, in their minds, is that they switch places. Charlie will go to the BDSM club and take Cat's punishment, which is to stay in the "hole" for a few days so she doesn't get kicked out of the BDSM club. In return, Cat would stay at Charlie's house until things calmed down and then they'd get things back to normal.
I will say the book did start out interesting. The whole mistaken identity trope is actually one of my favorites in books. So Charlie meets Master Cannon as "Cat" and knowing how Cat is, is rude and snarky to him. Neil doesn't take too kindly to being talked to like that so decides "Cat" needs to be taken into hand and given lessons on how subs really act. Things are just getting good, because it turns out, Charlie, who has never been in a D/s relationship took to her first couple lessons like a duck to water but when they're interrupted, she ended up leaving with Cat. Before Neil realized there were actually two of them.
The money stolen by Charlie was because her mother was ill and was in desperate need of surgery. Charlie and Cat head home, find there's a whole family secret neither knew about and Neil tracks them down there and realizes there are two Cats. Truth comes out, Charlie wants to continue with the lessons and he tells her no and gives her reasons why.
This is where the book took a turn for me. Charlie became TSTL in some scenes. She gave off a desperate vibe because she kept going after Neil and he would tell her she needed to apologize and she'd give excuse after excuse with no real apology. At that point, I didn't really care if they had their HEA or not.
In the meantime, Neil and Jude were trying to bring down the baddie and find the big family secret that involved Charlie and her family. Charlie and Cat end up finding a paper with the exact location of where they were headed and decided to go there with Charlie's assistant. Of course they run into obstacles and again come off as TSTL. At one point, Neil tells Charlie he's disappointed in her. Next scene is of Charlie jumping into the water to save a girl and when Neil takes that girl with the thought that Charlie would have climbed out herself but instead Charlie waits until they're out of sight and then lets go and "floats away" because she just knows she's "disappointed" Neil and they'd never be able to get past that. Are you kidding me? She had to be saved by Neil and then spent the next two weeks moping that he left her in the hospital as soon as she woke up. Cue the little violin music.
Of course this is a romance and they did have their HEA but it was just very meh to me.
In addition to that, the family secret? Once it was recovered? I expected a very emotional scene, like the scene when the secret came out but there was nothing. Just a few scenes where "The Skype" was involved and conversations were had but did I miss it? Did a physical face to face scene happen and I just skimmed it? At the end, I did do some skimming just to make the story pass faster but I would have paused at the reunion scene and yet, it never happened in this book. Do I assume that there's a book 3 in the future and it'll involve that character?
Also, for the baddie? While he was the baddie he was not the original baddie the hero thought he was so there's still the mystery of whodunit (even though the reader has a pretty good idea at this point) and of that person getting caught. Does that happen in book 2? I don't even know if I want to read book 2 right now. I may take a break and read something else because as Charlie had some TSTL moments, her sister had them too and I really don't want to read two back to back books with TSTL heroines.
**I was provided an ARC from NetGalley for an honest review. I did not receive any compensation for providing my opinion.**
OMG….All I can say about Provoked by Riley Murphy is WOW!!!! I had a hard time getting through the first couple chapters and thought I wasn’t going to like this book but then it really took off and I was HOOKED!!!! This book had everything I love in a romance – lust, love, angst, suspense, hot sex and laughs. This book played on all my emotions. I would be angry and the next moment, I would be laughing and then I was getting all hot and bothered and then I would be touched. It was AMAZING!!!!
Provoked is primarily about Neil Cannon, an infamous BDSM Master who is also a successful business owner and Charlotte (Charlie), who is a museum secretary that changes places with her twin sister after finding themselves in some trouble. The dynamics between these two characters is fabulous. However, the secondary characters really add to this book and I can’t wait to read more about them in upcoming releases.
The storyline in this book is excellent and will never leave you bored. By end of the story, I was wanting more. There are so many twists and turns and suspense filled moments that you will remain on the edge of your seat through the entire read. Add the dynamic characters to the storyline and you have a home run.
I can’t wait to see what this author releases next in this series. I am HOOKED and highly recommend this series.
I like Riley Murphy. I really, really do. I've read most of her works and rated them 4 and 5 stars. But this...I've been struggling since the beginning. Maybe it's me. And maybe I've had too many distractions and too much sun over this Memorial Day weekend.
I'm DNF-ing at 78%. Sorry Riley.
Is this book a spinoff from another series? It feels like it...but I can't figure out what series. I say that it feels like it's a spinoff because names, places, conversations, and situations seem to pop up out of nowhere at the oddest times that make me feel like I should know more back-story. This whole book feels very disjointed. Scenes don't feel finished before we're onto another one that's come out of left field.
I almost threw in the towel at 40-something%...but sallied forth. Some pieces started falling into place around 50-something% but those 'pieces' still didn't seem to fit all that well with previous information so I kept going with hope I'd finally see the light.
I know I'm in the home stretch at 78%...but I can't take it anymore. A conversation in the middle of a rescue effort of captive children about why the hero is disappointed in his would/will-be submissive for her stupid choices was pretty much my breaking point.
Sooooooooo, I loved the scenes between Master Neil & Charlie so much....like SQUEEEEEEEEEEE loved!!!!!!!! However, I found certain parts hard to keep up with between Cat/Charlie and then lost interest for a while & skimmed through parts. I wanted more Master Neil/Charlie and less Raiders of the lost Ark searching for things.......
4 quite happily engaged stars for Provoked (blow life?). I have to admit I enjoy aspects of BDSM so this book intrigued me on that end. While reading I found I actually did like Charlotte and Neil. Simply put, the book exceeded my expectations which is always a pleasant surprise. There's more to the story than sex and BSDM, thank the heavens.
Neil is a BDSM Master who is very into discipline and takes on Charlotte thinking she's her cock tease of a sister. He is in for a surprise when he gets Charlotte thinking she's her sister because Charlotte calls to him like no one else and forces him to break his own rules. Charlotte placed herself in a situation to where she had to pretend to be her twin sister which makes her have to become Neil's to discipline. Charlotte never played in the BDSM world but finds herself attracted to and greedy for Neil.
The two give and take from one another throughout the story even when truth comes out and Neil is angry. He tries to keep her away from him because she lied, because she hurt him. Charlotte continues to try to get to him and they dance around one another until a massive shift happens to which Neil realizes he can't be without her. They both need one another which allows for the pretty sweet ending. I didn't fall in love with the characters or the story but I liked it.
The story started out very intriguing. I wasn't sure what I was reading at first, the prologue didn't seem to fall into the blurb of the story. But I really liked the intro. I liked the story all the way up until Charlie left his house with Cat. After that, the story took a turn for being more about the mystery then their relationship. I thought when I picked this up that the story would be more a bdsm story. While the author wrote well, the dialogue was witty and entertaining, I just dove in with a different mindset and was disappointed with the characters. I did not feel that he was much of a dom to let Charlie do half the things she did. He came off weak by allowing her actions. I didn't feel that she respected him the way I would think a sub would respect her master. Their feelings blossomed quick, I could see how he fell, but Charlie's character was inconsistent. One minute this strong woman, the next a weakling. With that said, it was still ok read for me, the actual writing of the story saved this from being dumped in the dnf pile. I was actually interested in seeing how it would end.
I received an ARC yesterday and could not put this one down!! Charlie is so funny and together, she and Cat will make you laugh...and cry... and wish you had a sister like that. Neil - you want to be mad at him, you want to smack him sometimes... but, well before the end, you love him and by the end you absolutely get what he was trying to do! The story... wow... just wow... it hooks you from the beginning and doesn't let go... Neil and Charlie together... magic.. they're not perfect.. which makes them fun to read. Together they make you root for them.. and although you will shed a few tears throughout... inside you still do the happy dance a truly well written story gives you.. You will meet a cast of characters that you will want more of.. and a story line that you will want to figure out.. but Neil and Charlie.. this is their story.. and Riley, once again, tells it so very well!
I liked that Neil could be soft and sweet at times, "I can do that ,” he breathed that promise in her ear. Hearing it she nearly passed out, but then he added, “You have no need to worry, tiger. I’m taking care of you tonight. Come here." Charlie's sister cat was a damn hoot the girl had no filter, "did you tell her you screwed your Master on top of his Mercedes one night and the neighborhood police caught you?" I enjoyed this book and I enjoyed watching Neil's world be turned upside because of Charlie and Cat.
Riley did it again with this super sexy, awesome romance. Charlie is a smart, fun, and complex character that gets in way over her head in the BDSM scene. Just great, loved it!
Provoked is a hot and tempting beginning to a new series by Riley Murphy. It can be read as a stand-alone novel, with no cliffhangers, however, you'll definitely want to read more about Cat and Jude in Riley's next book in the series.
In the first chapter you're introduced to identical twins, Charlie and Cat Waters. These two will spark your interest from the get-go. Some of their scathingly brilliant plans take hilarious to an all new level.
Next, Neil Cannon, owner of Cannon's Custom Motors, enters the picture. When Neil is informed that his mechanics are vying to service Cat's 1955 356 roadster so that the winner will be the recipient of Cat's kinky capers, he decides to put an end to her antics. This time, Master Neil goes to service Cat's car and meet the woman described as "mischief personified". Charlie (pretending to be Cat) is totally unaware that she is dealing with owner and infamous Dom, Neil Cannon. She goes a little over the top with her portrayal of her feisty sister, Cat. Needless to say, it's game on.
You won't be able to skip to the good part because then you'd miss the secrets to be uncovered, a map where X marks the spot, cheering for the good guys, and booing the bad guy(s). Besides, it's all good. Most of all, you have to meet Neil Cannon, an infamous Dom, who has quietly faded into the background. That is, until he meets Charlie and must decide whether or not he'll accept the challenge of "taming the shrew" or continuing his calm, orderly existence...particularly when he's provoked. I'm very grateful that I received an ARC for this one.
I'd never heard of Riley Murphy prior to listening to her "A Perfect Holiday" right before Christmas. I really liked that audiobook, but this one is even better. I chose her books because they're narrated by Kai Kennicott and Wen Ross, who are like crack to me. They're addicting, and I can't get enough. Kennicott and Ross are as impressive as always and make the story come alive, but Murphy's writing blew me away. I fell in love with this book and was really saddened when it ended. Talk about a book hangover. Luckily, it's the first in a three-book series.
After listening to the sample and reading the blurb, I expected this to be pure BDSM erotica. While it has some really steamy BDSM scenes and seemlessly incorporates the lifestyle into the storyline, it is so much more than that. Foremost, it has a really suspenseful plot. The prologue was incredible and immediately hooked me. It made me anxious to find out what led up to the events in it and what happened afterwards. You have to wait some time to get back to that story since the prologue is a flashback to 23 years before the actual start of the book, but your patience will pay off. I'd classify this book as romantic suspense.
As far as the BDSM elements, I don't think I've read another author that has made it sound so beautiful. The way Neil explains it, especially what he puts into writing, is just amazing.
This was very well written with complex characters and a very complicated plot, which hasn't been fully resolved by the end of this book because the series has an overreaching mystery arc to be solved, but each book is a complete love story for its couple with no cliffhangers.
I was provided a copy of the audio book in exchange for an honest review. This was a better story than I had anticipated, mainly because I thought it was going to be strictly a romance novel with the BSDM element. While it is that as the main characters of Charlie (Charlotte) and Neil do have unexpected feeling for each other, the mystery aspect is what kept me interested. I got confused at times and had to go back and re-listen to portions to catch back up. So if one listens to this audio book, beware...do not become engrossed in any other tasks because you might miss important parts of the story.
The dual narration by Kai Kennicott and Wen Ross was fabulous. Each of them made Charlie and Neil come alive and even more realistic. So for that part, it wasn't so bad I got to listen to them repeat scenes.
While BDSM is not my thing for reading material, the author did do a good job of transmitting the feelings of the Dom and Sub to the reader so it was clear that this was no game. I still am not a fan, but it was a good, well written story that was able to keep my attention and that alone is worthy of praise.
This is the first book I have read by this author. I didn't read any reviews on the book as I wanted to form my own opinions. First, what worked and what I liked was the relationship between Charlie and Neil. The cover is drop dead gorgeous and to be honest, that is what drew me to the book. I'm not a hard core BDSM or erotica reader, but the scenes between the two were the best part of the book. Not just the hot and kinky stuff, but the relationship elements. The way that Neil held Charlie responsible for her actions was great character development. What didn't work so well was the rest of the plot. There was just so much crammed into this story that I really had to suspend belief. The twin's relationship, their mother's health, the stealing, the smuggling ring, the Kelli plot and more. While I like a story with a lot of action in it, I struggled to keep up with the events and how they all fit together. This book is worth reading for the relationship between the two characters, but make sure you are okay with leaps and bounds within the plot.
I was waffling between 3.5 stars or 4. I decided on the 4 because I did really like all the characters, I thought the writing was good & because goodreads doesn't have half star options. I actually don't have to much to say on this book though. Like I said I did like the characters but, at times I found the plot a little confusing. I would have to go back & reread some parts & towards the end I found myself skimming the last few chapters. There also wasn't a whole lot of character development which, I think really would've benefited this story. Still a good book & I'll continue with the series.
You cannot go wrong listening to Wen Ross and Kai Kennicott. They are the dream team of audible!
This was a great book, I would have given it 5 stars, but I found myself having to re-listen to some parts of it, as it was sometimes confusing. I should have read this instead of using audible, but Wen and Kai were my deciding factor. I love their voices.
I look forward to the next book, as I already have it on my audible player. Mmmm more Wen and Kai.
Great Read! I love the characters, so much depth. Neil is a BDSM Master and Charlotte is a museum secretary that changes places with her twin sister to stay out of trouble. The story is excellent, I couldn’t put it down. Looking forward to more!
This is the first time that I have read any of Riley Murphy's books. It will not be the last!!!!!! I loved Provoked, looking forward to what is coming next. Highly recommend
This was my first Riley Murphy book, but it won't be my last! I loved it from page one and the narrators are amazing ! Kai and Wen are the jackpot and always bring the story to life ❤️❤️
First, I have to say how much I loved this book. It has become one of my absolute favorites. Secondly, I am not one to read BDSM, BUT Riley Murphy has made me fall in love with each of her books and every single one of her characters. She writes so beautifully and the emotion in her stories gets me every time. Ms. Riley has quickly become one of my go to authors. I will buy whatever book she writes without even reading the blurb. I purchased the audio copy of this book and loved it. Here is my review.
Who was your favorite character and why? I liked both Neil and Charlie. I love how they both pull each other out of their comfort zones, but still compliment each other.
Which character – as performed by Kai Kennicott and Wen Ross – was your favorite? Kai and Wen do an amazing job with any book they narrate, but my favorite characters were the main couple Neil and Charlie. Kai and Wen do such a great job making sure the main characters are the focal point. Kai and Wen are smoking hot together!
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting? Yes, and I did listen to this book in one sitting.
Any additional comments? I absolutely love Riley Murphy's books. She is an amazing writer and communicates with her fans often. I happened upon her books by accident because I loved the narrators, and I'm so glad I found her. I really didn't read too many BDSM books, but Ms. Murphy has me hooked! I can't wait for the next installment in the series.
Provoked is fantastic story that had me gripped from start to finish. The romantic storyline was hot, funny and emotional. Add to this an intriguing mystery/suspense plot and you have a must read book. This is the second book I've read by this author and I absolutely loved both of them, so I'll definitely be looking out for more of her books.
Charlie gets herself into a spot of trouble which leads to her having to swap lives with her twin sister Cat for a few days. Then she ends up in even more trouble when Neil Cannon, a well respected Dom in the BDSM community, believes she's the twin who's been teasing his employees. Neil is determined to take the bratty sub to task for her behaviour, but she's not what he expected. As the chemistry between Charlie and Neil gets scorching hot, they find themselves drawn into a dangerous mystery involving her parents' pasts.
This was an exciting read, I couldn't put it down. The plot is unusual and intriguing, they was so much going on here. The humour in this book was fabulous, I was laughing out loud at times. At other times I had tears running down my face, as I really cared about these characters and I felt involved in their lives. Provoked is a brilliant book that definitely receives five stars.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for a honest review.
The story started out alright until Neil and Charlie met for the first time. He is upset because she does not bow down to him because he is a Dom after all. She does not know him and he does not know her. So why does he think she needs to be reined in? Because she is not timid or afraid to speak her mind? They are not in a relationship with each other but Neil thinks she needs a Dom to keep her in check. Really?? He comes across as a total asshat and it seems in a lot of these type of books the "Dom" expects any women he considers submissive to fall in line regardless of her being in this lifestyle or not. Seems to me those guys would benefit from counseling on how to have a meaningful relationship. Neil thinking that Charlie needs proper training, a firm hand, guidance and discipline is totally asinine. She is a women and not a freaking dog.
I hated for Charlie to run after Neil in hope he would forgive her for being human. And Neil doing things to Charlie because he can came across as patronizing and bullying. According to Neil all Charlie should be concerned with is pleasing him and not have an original thought.
The suspense in this book was alright is a little far fetched.
I usually don’t like books that intentionally are vague and confusing to build tension, but I only found it moderately annoying here :) Murphy’s characters and the complexity of the story kept me going past that and by the end I was glad I didn’t give up. The mystery portion may be a little convoluted for some, but since this is the first in a new series, there are some plot points that didn’t get resolved. However the main story line wraps up nicely and I can see how the next book or two could get quite interesting.
I’m not sure I totally understand the D/s lifestyle and I really am not sure I got Charlie going from an ultra-feminist to a sub in just a couple of days, but there is definitely sparks between her and Neil that work. The snarky dialogue and steamy interactions between the two made for fun reading. And while I don’t necessarily get the D/s relationship (mostly from ignorance), Murphy delivers it in an addictive way and I’ll definitely be on the look out for the next book in this series. I have a feeling Charlie’s sister is in for quite a few surprises.
(Complimentary copy provided in exchange for an honest review.)
Museum executive secretary, Charlotte Wood should know better than to play twin switch with her identical sister. But she's in trouble and so is Cat. The problem is that Cat's problem sends Charlie into a forced one on one BDSM training weekend with Master Neil Cannon. She knows her sister would have loved the experience and would gladly take every punishment the gorgeous Dom dished out. What she didn't expect was for her body to enjoy each spanking, nipple clamping or ball gagging so thoroughly. Turns out she and Cat aren't do different after all. Neil was set on personally dealing with the bold sub who had been tormenting his vanilla crew for months. But when a connection with the beautiful seductress sends his switches into overdrive, Neil has too reevaluate his priorities and needs. Suddenly, dominating and collaring the audacious woman is all he wants. But when she continues to defy him, Neil will discover that some relationships take a lot of work, patience and kink. A thrilling romance with lots of bad guys, bad blood, secrets, spanking, gagging and some other cool tricks…
Twin sister Charlie needs a swap to get away from trouble, and staying a weekend in a room at Cat´s club shouldn´t be too bad. She never expected someone coming for her, and a gorgeous man coming to her rescue. Or, that the gorgeous man would change her weekend in the club to a weekend with him.. Neil´s heard all about the submissive brat tempting his employees, so when he gets the chance to set her straight he doesn´t hesitate. He never thought the brat would turn out to be so much more.. When trouble comes calling again, he´s got to save her again. Is it enough to keep her safe, or is it too late? Contemporary romance, smutty fluff and Dominance in a great combo. A bit confusing in the beginning, lots of info and plots, but it was worth it in the end. I´m guessing Cat´s story will be less confusing =)
Received an ARC from NetGalley for an honest review.
The relationship between Neil and Charlie gets 4 stars...the rest of the story gets 2, so I'm averaging out. The plot was extremely fuzzy to me. I'm still not entirely sure what went down with Sharp and the thing with Maddox...not to mention the fact that I thought Jude was bad? Also, the author jumped around with names so much that I couldn't keep up. That said, Neil and Charlie were great together and their letters to one another were perfect. The fact that Cat and Charlie's problems with Travis were never really resolved also bugged me. Murphy just needs some help with the plot department because she has the D/s thing down.
First off I'm giving not just 4 but 4.5 stars to this book. Neil is just WOW and then when Charlie switched places with her sister having no idea about the BDSM world things change very fast. With Neil having no idea he's with the other sister and continues on as usual it gets HOT and it gets hot fast. I loved the storyline there's a bit of suspense thrown into the mix and then times where I'm laughing out loud because of Charlie's actions. I can't wait to move onto book 2 and find out more about the other people's roles and more background on them as well. Great book, definitely enjoyed. This is my unbiased and voluntary review.
Absolutely loved the chemistry between Neil and Charlie. She's the very proper executive woman, and he's the rough and edgy mechanic/Dom king. The way they interact is also hilarious, you can really feel the chemistry when they banter back and forth. The only issue I had with Riley Murphy's Provoked was that it ended!
Favorite quote? "The embrace was hard. Angry. Demanding and, god, she loved the intensity. She tasted his power. His determination to claim. To subdue and punish."
There are tons of twists and turns with steamy scenes in between. 10/10 would read sequel.
I know I shouldn't judge a book by its cover, but the cover for this one totally drew me in. Unfortunately, the cover doesn't really match the book all that well. I liked the storyline between the main characters - the romance and heat between them. But everything else was not very interesting. At times I found it hard to follow (unclear dialogue, choppy editing). There were quite a few loose ends as well -- perhaps setting the stage for a second book, which I'm not sure I would read.
