Homestead Crafter #1

Homestead Crafter: A Litrpg Crafting Slice of Life

Rate this book
I never expected to get a crafting class, nor did I expect to get expelled from my family because of it. But I won't let that stop me from growing stronger and proving to my father that despite only being able to craft that doesn't mean I'm worthless.

Setting out for the Wilds, the untamed lands of the world, I promised myself that I would become a settler and flourish in the danger and fight for survival. It may sound hard, but as a Master of Crafts, I have all the professions and tools I need to build myself a homestead and survive against all odds. Not only that, but it seems I have a certain way of drawing the sapient denizens of the forest to me.

All that's left is building my house, growing my gardens, and experimenting with every crafting profession I can.

I like to keep my bio simple. A few updates and a small mention that all of my books have a tinge of romance involved.

Ashen Realm: Book two will be coming out at the beginning of February. The third book is nearly ready as well. I'm hoping to have it published in April.

Fenrir's series; I will be releasing the fourth book at the beginning of the year around March.

Dimension Dungeon 3 is in the works still. I'm not sure when I'll get it out, but know that I am working on it.

World Champion has been launched, and the second book will be out near the beginning of the year. There will not be a preorder for it, so keep an eye out.

Too much Musk

This book was bad. From a cringe worthy 'romance' sub plot which dominated the book, a Mary Sue Protagonist, to laughably unrealistic character interactions, there was little to enjoy.

There appears to be a bunch of 5 star reviews with unbelievably positive comments posted before the book was published. Which is terrible practice, i would not have read for that alone if i had known.

Also, minor gripe but it really irked me, the MC's dad, a man so obsessed with combat he dissowns his son when he doesn't get a combat class, named said son " Tanner"; as in a crafter.

Final note, if i ever read the word "musk" again, it will be too soon.

Not good

I started thinking I should drop the book at around 7% completion. That tells you what you need to know. Heres some quick issues
- the book needs editing. Wrong words, broken sentences and even the wrong names in spots
- the author is weirdly obsessed with the fox girls 'musk' and brings it up every page for the first half of the book.
- the power system is left vague to cover for the fact that the story is badly put together and the Mc is just better than everyone just because and the author can't be bothered to explain
- the character interactions make no sense and the relationships are complete nonsense

Disappointing

This was a difficult book to finish. It has events of LitRPG but doesn’t really give much depth or context to how he is leveling up and what it does for him. It needs a lot of editing…words are misspelled (scatt for scat) or used incorrectly (coup for coop) or overused (the word musk is used about a million times in the first six chapters). The characters have no depth and the women are written as fairly vapid. The main female acts like she has been waiting in the woods for 6+ years for a husband. Is warrior sister faints and cowers when faced with a nonhuman beast kin. The elf is childish and petty a acting. A bunch of extra characters are added at the end with no clear purpose. I won’t read the next one. I appreciate the author making it available on KU but this is NOT worth the read time.

Very Misleading

DNF. This is not a cozy crafter story. It should have been called “The Foxgirl and the Settler” and feature a barely dressed foxgirl on the cover to let readers know what to really expect.

There is no detail given to the crafting at all. “I cut down a tree and made planks. Then I made a wall.” Not because he has magical crating powers, it’s simply because there’s no real description of the process. There is however quite a bit of focus put into the foxgirl’s fluffy tail, musk, and sexual innuendos starting on night 1. Honestly, the number of times musk was mentioned was a bit creepy.

This felt like watching an anime full of children being over-sexualized. Even though the characters are of legal age, the immature writing and complete shift away from how the book is described in the blurb made everything feel dirty.

As for the “magic,” I’m not really sure what they were going for. They talk about levels, and have pop-up text like a litrpg, then shift into talking about cores and compressing essence like an eastern cultivation novel. Other stories have pulled off the mixing of the 2 genres, but this story does not. There is almost zero discussion about how things work, expecting the reader to just already know all that somehow. When the MC had his first level-up, then turned to the foxgirl and said “I felt you, inside me” I knew I was done.

The Cover is beautifully done, and that was probably 90% of what drew me in.

I'm not sure who that actual audience foe this book is. The LitRPG elements are poorly done, the "romance" is cringe (feels like bad Twilight relationships), and there's fade to black sex scenes. So it isnt aimed at adult "romance" readers, but it's also awkward enough that I wouldn't recommend younger readers try it either.

Plot is basic (and ridiculous) and the characters are poorly written.

Sadly there are multiple clearly AI or paid 5 star reviews which encouraged me to write a review.

Love Story Between Fox woman and human

This was written for ages from 12 to 14, way to young for me. The author didn't indicate it's a love story between a human and a Fox Woman. I only read about 20% and decided to quit. Not the least bit interested in a story like this.

good story but

But spoiled by the lack of decent editing, chicken coup for example. I very nearly gave up entirely, about 70% done. Story line good, opportunities missed though- which says to me that the beta readers are not doing their share. Offered to help; can’t criticise without offering solution. Will try some more; hope springs….

Consent Matters

So if a more powerful creature rocks up to you while you're sleeping and starts touching you without your knowledge and consent, it's okay if she's pretty? Yeah, no.. that's not okay. Have characters with a grown up relationship, please. Also, author used the word musk like 20 times in the first 38 pages I made it through. Yuck. Other than an over reliance on musky things and being touched on the dark, the writing and system seemed interesting.

S.D. McKittrick's "Homestead Crafter" is the first in an LITTPG series. Tanner, the MC, is raised, trained, and educated by his powerful fighter classed father to succeed him in running their estate. His father has huge plans for Tanner when he receives his class. The problem arises when Tanner receives a crafter class rather than a combat class.
The story opens with Tanner leaving his home. His plan is to run away to "the wild" and become a great crafter just to show his father. As the story develops, we see Tanner growing in power that he should not have. He builds a homestead that becomes a bastion of diversity. Tanner is a mix of powerful crafter and naive and clueless late teenager. At times it can be a little irritating, but fits the character well. The story is well written. The character development is handled skillfully. There is not a lot of the LITRPG element, though.
If you are looking for a fast paced, action packed fantasy romp, you will need to find another book. However, "Homestead Crafter" will pull you in. You will become invested in the characters. I give the book 4 stars for two reasons: first, there are a few editorial issues, missing words, words misused, etc. In this age of self-publishing, this is common IRRITATING problem. Second, the basic plot of this series sounds so much like the plot for another series by McKittrick, "Bloodline of the Phoenix". Please note that at the time of writing this review, I have not read that series, but shall read the first book.
All in all, I highly recommend this book and look forward to book 2 coming soon.

I liked the overall plot, but if you're looking for a gripping experience, this isn't it. I would've given this a higher rating, but the appalling grammar, spelling, etc. was an ongoing annoyance. I'm starting the second volume with the hope that the author received enough feedback to spur either some remedial education, seek a better proofreader and/or make the final product a higher priority; if there was any proofreading, it should have been done by someone other than the author.

In works of fiction, stylistic flexibility is an important part of narrative voice. At the same time, consistency in spelling, syntax, and structural coherence plays a significant role in supporting the reader’s immersion. In several sections of the text, variations in spelling accuracy and occasional omissions of supporting grammatical structures required additional effort to parse the intended meaning.
From a linguistic and cognitive perspective, such disruptions can momentarily shift the reader out of the narrative and increase the processing load, which may unintentionally alter the pacing or diminish the impact of the storyline. Ensuring greater consistency in these areas could enhance the fluidity of the reading experience and allow the strengths of the plot and character development to come through more clearly.
Given the quality of the underlying narrative, attending to these structural elements would likely amplify the work’s overall effectiveness and accessibility.

I really tried to finish this. It is just so so bad. If a reader is looking for something, anything, they won't find it in this book. The homesteading is glossed over with no problems whatsoever. There is no struggle at all. Yes there is no action whatsoever, but just no struggle in general. No problem persists for more than half a second. The system is non-existent. The leveling makes no sense and is acknowledged in-universe as making no sense. Do you like slice of life? You won't find it here. Everything moves so incredibly fast that it gives you whiplash. The very first day he stops in the middle of the woods he is adopted by a horny fox girl who swears her life and future to him because he's male. Every person he meets is suddenly a lifelong friendship who he would do anything for. He finds an amnesiac elf in the woods who doesn't remember anything except how to be insufferable. He tells her to live with him, builds her a house in 1 day, and she grabs a random traumatized boy to be her house husband after spending 5 minutes with this child. This is not Gamelit, or LitRPG, or survival, or Slice-of-Life, and I'd argue it's not even cozy. I don't know if this book was written by/with AI, but I kind of hope it was. If a person wrote this completely unaided then I worry for the future of our species. There is just nothing here.

My reviews are my own. If you liked this book or not, I respect your opinion.  This is merely my opinion, so let's keep it courteous. My review is honest and voluntary.

It was good until the sexual innuendos and romance. I do not understand why these types of books need to introduce relationships other than friendships, like a man and a woman can't be only friends, and every being has sexual interests. Do people know that asexuality/aromantic is real? Not everyone needs a partner to achieve happiness!!! It is such a close-minded idea. I just want my LitRPG to be about adventure or crafting, not romance! The book is repetitive, too; for example, the word "musk" must have hit the 300 count in the first chapters. The female characters are also airheads, and the MC acts like he has been living in the woods for an eternity. Crafting or not, you can't just start doing things hw was out of the blue. Then they introduce a bunch of characters for no reason, and worst of all, the elf was such a petty character. Anyway, I couldn't care for any of them. Childish, ridiculous, and over the top! Dropping the series. Sad, because the book idea was great.

On to my next adventure, Happy Readings!!!

Really enjoyed this book

The characters were interesting. It’s definitely slow burn, which isn’t a bad thing. The characters are interesting and while I kind of wanted a little more depth to some of them, they were interesting and likable, for the most part.

I dropped it to a 4 star instead of 5 because the editing kind of failed the author. Maybe it’s just a kindle thing, but there were some misspelled or missing words. I actually had more of a problem with the incorrect words. It was clear what was meant almost every time, little things like when the main character was working on the ‘plumping’ in the houses. It was correct later on, and it was obvious what was meant, so no biggie. But then there was the coup for the birds to live in that remained coup all the way through… Little stuff like that. It just jarred me out of the story when I ran into those.

Other than that, I think it’s a fantastic read and I’m insanely curious to find out what comes next with the mystery person at the end and little Marigold, and of course Tanner and Amara. I absolutely would recommend this, but do hope that the editing is a bit better in volume 2.

crafters dream

Imagine a world where leveling isn’t earned by slaying monsters, but by mastering every profession—forging, woodworking, enchanting, engineering—until skill itself becomes your weapon.

This book captures that thrill perfectly. It feels like playing World of Warcraft or a massive MMO in a completely new way: same lethal dangers, same sprawling conflicts between races and elites, but a radically different path to power. Instead of grinding mobs, you ooze progression through ingenuity, turning crafting and expertise into unstoppable momentum.

The stakes are high, the world is dangerous, and every choice matters—but watching power grow through creativity rather than combat is endlessly satisfying. If you’ve ever wondered what an MMO-style fantasy would look like when professions take center stage, this story delivers it with confidence, originality, and a constant sense of awe.

DNF at 7%

I like a crafting focus when it is done well. This book doesn’t deliver. It looks like the MC can pick up a craft (and oh man does it stretch the definition of what a craft is) by just sort of doing something like it which pretty much saps the ability of all tension. We all know the power is going to build in this genre so its development has got to be interesting.

It’s mostly written in a passive telling voice so there’s almost no sense of discovery or immediacy.

And then there’s the musk. It’s laughably bad writing and unsurprisingly leads to a fox girl. Look, maybe fox girls are somehow cool sometimes, but they always seem to show up in the context of a grimy little “romance” fantasy with questionable power imbalances.

No thanks.

Good start to the series

This was a good slice of life book. It focused mostly on the MC as he worked on his crafting skills. He also started a homestead that slowly increased the number of people. I liked the progress he made in his skills. I liked the races that are slowly gathering around him. I liked the friends and family that are collecting. There was fighting, but just enough to be interesting and not overwhelming. I am looking forward to the next book to see where it goes.

Young adult with need of editing.

Feel good story that jumps around, over explains and make women always passively aggressive against the men who they treat a second class people although professing to treat them poorly for their own good. Weak story that meandered along with no real objective except what they were making for food everyday. Very forgettable and not worth an adult reader's time, however young readers may find interest even though it has aggressive adult themes at times.

No Harem, So Yay

I was ready to write the series off when it started with a love interest, right from the start, but it surprisingly did not tank the story. In my experience relationship in litrg usually distract from the story and gets even worse with Harems, there usually so much going on that spending time to really portray a meaningful relationship is not possible. I'm glad to say that's not entirely true in this series. If you are into crafting, village building, and slow burn action this is a series you'll enjoy. :)

Highly recommended crafting romance

This is a fantastic story which I binged in a single day. The pace is quick with the first third being mostly craft and romance. There is no explicit content and the written romance is focused on emotion with the physical referenced but not described.
There are a small number of typos/grammar errors including coup instead of coop annoying me for a short period.
I would highly recommend and I eagerly wait for the next one.

Great Read

This was a wonderful new read that kept me engrossed from beginning to end. It was rather obvious that Tanner and Amara was going to end up together, and I wasn't disappointed by how the author achieved that. I just wished that it was a little more clear if the monsters that attacked the homestead were from the actual dungeon since the didn't actually find any in there. Im definitely waiting on book 2.

Good simple read

Overall, it was a good book and an easy read. It could definitely use a bit of editing, especially when it comes to grammar and word choice, but I would still recommend it. I’d also love to see more development in how character choices are made, as some moments felt like they fell into place too easily instead of being built through meaningful interaction between the characters.

Unique slice of life LitRPG that I really enjoyed!

MC has been forced to train his whole life to be a fighter but he doesn't get that class, so his father kicks him out. He travels to the Wilds, where humans don't survive/return from. This is the story of his survival and growth.
He's mellow and just wants to grow his skills. Oh, he's way OP! But not obnoxiously so, you kinda have to root for him.
I've already ordered the next book, due out in early Feb 2026.

Well Paced.

This is exactly the kind of story I’ve been searching for. I loved the pacing especially. It felt calm yet interesting, so very well balanced. I really like how the growth system didn’t overwhelm the story either. It’s an important part of the story, but it doesn’t overwhelm it and make it feel the character is obsessed with grinding skills. He cares about having his skills get better, but it’s such a second thought to everything else. I really like that.

interesting book

Like the storyline, and the pace of the book is good. Shame that stories like this have a MC that is so OP though. A slower build to OP would be more interesting in my personal opinion. Did find the spelling error of plumping annoying to start but it was corrected before the end of the book so all good there too. Looking forward to the future books and how many new friends will join the homestead soon.

A fun and steady read

Okay, so for many, this book might seem dull as the main character concentrates on crafting and is obviously touched by the heavens.

A host of misfit characters joins our main character and adds nuance to the book.

The author needs to back and fix the obvious grammatical mistakes. I am no expert on the craft but I have never heard of plumping when describing pipes, water, and waste flow. I am hoping the author meant plumbing.

Have fun!!

Great crafting novel

I've always enjoyed crafting. This book is not super detailed with the crafting, But again, there's a lot to craft. V m c is very OP but only in the crafting world. Hopefully, he doesn't always have to rely on others for big protection,But I understand the focus of the story is his crafting abilities. Anyone who enjoys a crafting or slice of life style book will enjoy this.

Great read by a new author for me

Found the “Homestead crafter“ while I was looking for another book to read. Thought I’d give it a try. Was very pleased. A great story and a genuinely good MC. Looking forward to book 2, which I understand will be coming out soon. If you’re looking for something to read, I would strongly recommend giving this book a try

Excellent book and a nice change of pace

Excellent world building and characters from this first book in a new series. Who knew a crafting book could be so entertaining. And yet you still have your fighting and dungeon crawling to go with it. Very nicely done. Looking forward to the next book in the series.
