I Didn’t Want to Either: Transforming Therapy from Daunting to Doable

Rate this book
A therapist who didn't want therapy either shows you exactly what to expect—before, between, or outside of sessions.

Starting therapy is confusing and, for most people, scary. The openness required, the fear of judgment, the uncertainty of what you'll uncover—these concerns keep people feeling stuck even when they’re open to help. Cody Qureshi knows this firsthand as a therapist, not only from her practice but as a once-skeptical client herself.

I Didn’t Want to Either offers an insider's look at what actually happens in therapy, from someone who's sat on both sides of the room. Written in her warm, conversational voice with honest explanations of how therapists think, this book follows the same process therapists use with new clients, offering valuable exercises and groundwork

Building community when you feel isolatedSetting boundaries without guiltUnderstanding your stress before it overwhelms youReframing your negative thoughts and practicing gratitude
Each chapter helps you understand yourself better to walk into your first session feeling prepared, or to simply improve your mental health if you’re not ready to commit to therapy. And for new therapists, it even offers insight into the client experience and practical approaches to first sessions.

Whether you're ready to start therapy or simply curious about the process, this book meets you where you are.

This book was written by a therapist who originally didn't want to go to therapy. She wrote the book she would have wanted to have read before starting therapy, and I feel the same way! I could have really benefited from this book decades ago.

It helps readers understand what to expect from therapy, how to prepare, what types of therapy are available, how to find a therapist, and - importantly - what people can do right now, on their own, if they aren't ready to go to therapy yet.

There are exercises throughout that help with self-discovery. And you even get a peek at what it's like to be a therapist on the other side of the table or screen. Highly recommended!

This book captures the courage of the human spirit, the power of knowledge, and sheds light on the nuanced experience of starting therapy. Qureshi balances the complexity of the human experience with humor and reflective insight.

“I Didn’t Want to Either: Transforming Therapy from Daunting to Doable” resonates with the parts of us that want change and the other parts that fear it. This book feels intentionally tailored to meet the reader where they are and explores to the preconceived notions and stigmas around therapy.

I love this book. Useful for anyone who is considering therapy and wants to know more about it but also great for those who want to do some personal development.
There were some good questions to get you reflecting and also some really practical tips to getting the best out of the work. Thanks to NetGalley and Ripples Media for the ARC.

Outstanding book with countless exercises for therapeutic gain, the greatest of which is how much it reduces friction in seeking professional support. My favorite nuggets were the variety of prescriptive options for stress relief and a clear definition and process for setting boundaries. I will definitely be recommending this book to my family, friends and coaching clients!

Qureshi has written an everyday guide to understand the world of therapy and the possibility of getting help. From understanding your emotions and channeling them positively to making the decision to get help and choosing the right person. Qureshi approaches a serious topic with her humor from her own personal journey. An excellent read.
