Once part of a dying species, one wolf now harnesses supernatural and godlike abilities as it fights for survival, in this grimdark fantasy adventure.

It's been nearly a millennium since wolves prowled the earth. They're only spoken of as mythical destroyers of life. But one solitary wolf, born a simple, primal beast, is becoming the very monster of legend feared by both humans and otherworldly creatures. A multilimbed shapeshifter, it slaughters anything that threatens it or the pack of allies it has sworn to protect, including Emhreeil; her human friend, Katherine; and a goblin known as Scruffy.

All three are grateful for the wolf's guidance but frightened of its growing power. And as the team navigates warring factions battling for control of a dungeon labyrinth, they discover one of those factions wants to ally themselves with their party. This partnership would allow them the means to telepathically communicate with their savage leader—and access a ritual blood spell to make the wounded Emhreeil whole once more, an offer they can't refuse.

As the two groups join forces, Emhreeil undergoes a physical transformation as uncanny as the wolf' now she's a winged elven vampire, consumed with bloodlust and evolving into an immortal being. Although powerful, her healing comes at the cost of her humanity. With each victory won against monsters and hunters living in the dungeon, she descends further into madness. And as she and the wolf prove themselves as apex predators, they begin to reach toward a godhood that Katherine and Scruffy don't—and can't—share.

But their enemies still stalk them. The dungeon lord Baron Manos Ironheart will stop at nothing to make the wolf his personal weapon, and Marquess Irythiel—Emhreeil's volatile mother—has massacred a dungeon noble's family in a quest to find her daughter. As these threats and more close in, the wolf and his pack know they must break out of the underground labyrinth . . . and take the fight to the surface once and for all.

Left Hungering For More

The series of a very strange wolf and its humanoid friends in a horrible metal dungeon continue! This book in the series is still just as good as the others, but is marred by two major issues: Its extremely short length and sudden PoV switching. Otherwise, it's more Fleabag goodness that I've come to crave!

In this book, our protagonist must deal with its greatest foe yet: learning how to live in a pack. However, it receives help along the way, we get a little bit of fun turns of events, and then the book ends suddenly on a cliffhanger out of nowhere.

My summary of the book there isn't spoilering anything because the book was just so short. Most of that was covered by the book's blurb. But for a more involved explanation: We spend the entire first half of the book dealing with necessary introductions and moving things along. . The second half is absolutely delightful, but again, too short. The bits in which , but there's just not enough of it.

And then there's the PoV switching in this one. It might be a problem with the formatting, but there's a lot of missing separators between PoV switches. It's highly confusing and annoying. Other than that, though, the prose just keeps getting better. It feels much more mature now, which I appreciate, and characters are increasingly better at getting their own voice.

Credit where it is due: the world is dark, but not hopeless, and I'm very invested in what happens to our pack, and even what fun little side things they get up to. The worldbuilding has great potential. The System does too, but needs more focus than it currently has. I want to see more of it. And, of course, the author is a complete anatomy nerd and it is always absolutely delightful.

I'm very sad this one was so brief compared even to the short book 2. The strong and impressively pervasive themes of the first book just don't have time to develop at this point! It feels themeless right now, which is stupendously frustrating, considering I know what the author is capable of! This won't be a problem when the series is done, mind you, because you'll have all the books up front, but right now I'm just like Fleabag itself, devouring everything but still endlessly ravenous for more.

(I think I should mention what I learned recently about the author's situation: a multi-year chronic health problem left them unable to write until some time last year, which probably explains the length of this one. I'm sad to hear what they went through, and hopeful for them bouncing back from this.)

Honestly, it's probably a 3.5/5, but I am rounding down since the book was legit half as long as previous installments. Good chance I will drop the series if the next book is this short.

Garbage

Full of errors and completely lacking in action. Main character doesn’t get into a fight for the entire book and it’s depressingly short. Being forced to pay for this trash when there’s so much better fiction on Kindle unlimited means I really will be forgetting this author.
