Before I called it quits on my writing, I had the privilege of working with some of the authors collected here, so picking it up was a non-brainer for me. Sean McDonnell and Drew Valdez alone could sell me on an antho any day of the week. Curiously, these two are, in some ways, bookends to the wide spectrum of stories collected here and at once an illustration of the rich variety and quality you can expect when you pick up this volume— which, really, you should. McDonnell, a master of folk horror, champions his signature dreamy, song-like style in a tale that echoes Eggers, with a satisfying snap in the end. Valdez cuts deep and bloody, as always, proving once again that visceral horror and thoughtful fiction need not be mutually exclusive.

What lies between these two gentlemen is a world of grim tales, carefully selected by editor Dylan Bosworth. I know Mr Bosworth as a gifted (read phenomenal) horror writer himself, a craftsman with strong convictions, an unerring eye for quality, and a mind as sharp as his pen. That critical eye is by no means limited to his own work. Whatever he deems worthy to bring to print merits a second look, and this anthology is certainly a case in point. The entries in this volume span form and sub-genres, offering a hearty slice of Thanksgiving and folk-inspired horror, which— selling point in itself? Stories run the gambit: from the entry in hateful second person that will end up making you smile, across the darkness brought in verse and a unique AP Murphy creature feature, all the way to a Keith Long short that will put your teeth on edge.

The care that went into selecting and ordering the content for this collection is evidenced by the ease with which I blew through it. Not only are these stories incredible and, again, unique in the vast field of themed anthologies, but Bosworth shuffled them perfectly. Compared to some other themed anthos, which can become a slog (cough, Lost Signals), this one is horror legato. It's over before you know it, leaving only that fluttering in your chest, and a phantom full-step bend ringing in your ears.

Conclusion?

Read. It.

Proud to be involved with this press and have my story alongside these fantastic authors, each with a unique voice and take on what makes folk horror so unsettling (and wonderful). I hope you enjoy reading this book as much as I enjoyed writing my story. <3 - Sean Thomas McDonnell

The Blighted Land is a mythic dark fantasy that sinks its claws in from the first page and refuses to let go. Donna Wilkinson delivers a beautifully haunting tale filled with ancient bloodlines, forbidden magic, and a heroine whose journey is as emotional as it is epic.
