The year is 2089, and the world's population has just been decimated by a racially motivated bioterrorist attack gone awry. The half million survivors, all living on the Mediterranean island of Bethel, embark on an unprecedented plan to direct human evolution and rid humanity of the pervasive xenophobia and interracial fear that nearly rendered all human life extinct.

Sari Aldira, a recently graduated social worker, faces an irreconcilable acquiesce to her husband Brahm's demands to terminate her unexpected but much desired pregnancy or have their child and create a maelstrom of controversy that would sabotage his ambitious proposal to direct the course of human evolution.

Now, the fate of the Human Homogenization Project and the future direction of all humankind rests within Sari's womb.

TRIBE is the telling of one family's story to reconcile the contemporary and omnipresent issues of interracial fear and xenophobia. But, in essence, it is a chronicle of all humanity's struggle, as their well-intentioned leaders take extreme authoritarian measures to eliminate the destructive elements of racism and tribalism from the human condition.

But, at what cost?

What a searing read! TRIBE grips from page one and takes you on a wild ride in a story set in 2089, just after a bioterrorist attack. I read right through lunch and dinner, so rapt that I ignored my darling husband and adored calico kitten while I raced straight through to the end. Whew!

The attack's impact is cataclysmic, with descriptions that make you feel the terror of a world gone mad. It made me fear what might happen to our own world, with the threat of nuclear war so high. I especially related to character Sari Aldira, whose husband wants her to terminate a longed-for pregnancy so he can pursue his goal of creating a homogeneous society, where multiple races are blended into one to eradicate tribalism and racism.

The vulnerability of humanity is poignantly captured in Sari, as she struggles with whether to have her baby and go against everything her husband stands for, or to acquiesce to his wishes and break her own heart to support his authoritarian Human Homogenization Project.

I sat stunned when I finished, my thoughts abuzz with the many philosophical, moral, and spiritual questions raised by TRIBE. Highly recommended for readers who appreciate profound stories that make them think and touch their hearts.

The first in a trilogy by debut author Gary Shapero, this dystopian novel examines how much it is nature - genetics - or nurture that governs the way we live.

Set in the future, 85 years from now, the world has been devastated by The Event. A type of ebola has killed virtually everyone except a few thousand people living on a beautiful Mediterranean island, Bethel. Prior to that, there were many terrorist outrages, including the destruction of a bridge linking Bethel to the mainland.

The survivors' new government decrees that the only hope for mankind is homogenisation. They argue that suspicion and fear of other races is dictated by our genes. The only way for us to live in harmony is to end tribalism to halt it is to encourage diversity. Those who disagree will not be classed as "official citizens" and denied various privileges.

Tribe explores this theory and its outcome over several decades with the spotlight on one family which provides political figureheads on both sides of the debate.
