Interlude

A breath between heartbreak and wholeness.

To the world, Kelechi Scott has it all—Grammy-winning frontwoman of Angels vs Airwaves, global icon, and one half of music’s golden couple. But behind the spotlight, her marriage is quietly breaking under the weight of fame, silence, and unspoken grief.

When a chance collaboration brings her face-to-face with Roman “Spartacus” Campbell—London’s magnetic, guarded rapper with a voice like smoke—what begins as music becomes something neither of them can name. In the studio, every lyric peels back another layer; on stage, every glance feels like confession.

As the world watches, Kelechi finds herself standing at the edge of the life she’s built and the love she never saw coming. And in the quiet between beats, she has to decide what harmony truly sounds like—sacrifice or self, duty or desire.

Set against the rhythm of the global music scene, Interlude is a story about rediscovering your voice, choosing your peace, and finding love in the pause between what was and what could

Interlude is an intimate, reflective story about overstaying a relationship, losing yourself, and learning how to choose yourself again—without apology. It’s also about learning what it actually feels like to be protected in love, and becoming honest with yourself in the quiet pause—even when the world thinks you already have it all.

This was my first read by Kenya, and I loved how intimate, reflective, and emotionally honest the story felt. The drama here is quieter and more internal, focusing less on external villains and more on Kelechi’s personal growth and emotional journey. Because the story is told solely from her point of view, much of the weight sits with her inner world—even if I still wished we got a bit more time with her friendships and longer conversations there.

At its core, Interlude explores marriage strain, grief, addiction recovery, emotional burnout, and self-abandonment. Kalichi has been holding her family together for a long time, and that exhaustion shows up in subtle, relatable ways. The story doesn’t rush her awakening—it lets it simmer, mirroring the emotional weight she’s been carrying.

One of the most compelling aspects of the book is the contrast between how Kalichi experiences the two men in her life. Through her eyes, the difference between being loved and being defended becomes clear. Her marriage to Malachi has become strained. He doesn’t acknowledge the weight of his actions on their family, nor the work Kalichi has done to hold everything together. She kept their household stable through his addiction and relapses, shielding the kids from the full impact when he couldn’t, and now he expects acknowledgment just for being sober—without truly owning how his choices affected everyone else.

That absence of accountability is exhausting, and it underscores why Kalichi’s journey toward self-protection and understanding what it feels like to be truly seen and defended is so essential. Boundaries aren’t enforced, respect isn’t modeled, and over time, that void quietly erodes trust.

By contrast, her connection with Roman introduces an entirely different dynamic. There’s communication, reassurance, and a clear sense of intent. He doesn’t grandstand or overpromise, but when it matters, he shows up decisively. The difference isn’t loud—but it’s deeply felt.

The music industry backdrop is one of the story’s strongest elements. Kalichi’s healing is deeply tied to her art, and you can feel that in the way songs, lyrics, and creative moments are woven into the narrative. I also loved how the chapters reflect musical composition—it reinforces the idea that this story unfolds like a piece of music, not a dramatic explosion. Roman’s presence, including the way his accent and cultural details are written, adds texture without ever feeling forced or performative.

This isn’t a book driven by shock value or over-the-top drama. The tension here is internal and relational, not chaotic. It’s about realizing when something is already dead—and having the courage to stop giving it CPR.

If you enjoy emotionally mature stories about healing, boundaries, music, and complicated adult relationships, Interlude is a thoughtful, character-driven read. It’s the kind of book that stays with you—not because it shocked you, but because it felt honest. I’m definitely curious to see where the Ballroom Hill series goes next.

“Because you’re my interlude,” I said, voice low.
“The breath between heartbreak and wholeness. The calm after everything that hurt.”

Interlude by Kenya Jaye follows rockstar Kelechi, who appears to have the perfect life — a hip-hop star husband, a beautiful family, and the kind of luxury most people only dream about. But behind the spotlight, the rhythm of her marriage has fallen out of sync. Malachi may be a devoted father, but the love Kelechi longs for has faded into something that feels more like habit than harmony.

When Malachi asks for a break, Kelechi escapes to London — a city whose slower tempo gives her room to breathe. There, she meets Roman, a magnetic British rapper whose presence feels less like noise and more like a melody she didn’t know she was missing.

As Kelechi moves between two worlds — LA and London, marriage and possibility — her life begins to feel like a song caught between verses. Some moments land in dissonance, others in perfect harmony, but each forces her to listen more closely to her own voice.

When the interlude ends, Kelechi must decide what kind of music she wants her life to make — return to the familiar rhythm she built with her husband, or risk composing something entirely new.

I loved how the story explores identity, art, and the quiet moments where life changes direction. The music theme running through the story made Kelechi’s emotional journey feel even more layered and unique.

ARC Review

Interlude by Kenya Jaye is exactly what the title suggests, a pause, a transition, and a moment of reflection. Kelechi finds herself in an interlude of life as a famous singer in a very public marriage, smiling for the world while feeling empty inside. When a music collaboration with a fine London rapper cracks something open, everything begins to shift. Friendship turns complicated, feelings resurface, and a separation from her husband forces Kelechi to finally choose herself.

This story beautifully centers a black woman self-healing and the reality of being everything to everyone while losing yourself in the process. It allows Kelechi to be messy, honest, and vulnerable as she takes her power back and rebuilds on her own terms. As a girls’ girl, I loved watching her journey unfold—failing, healing, and starting again as many times as it takes. A reflective, emotional read that feels both necessary and affirming.

Kenya! Baby this book felt like one of grandma’s precious hugs. It was intimate, healing, and honest. Like I could feel her breath in the freedom of finally choosing herself. It wasn’t rushed, it was appropriately walked through, it was felt, it was freaking intentional. Malachi asked for something he wasn’t ready for because he thought she would remain there. I’m so proud of Kelechi for choosing herself and taking control of her heart and her narrative. She realized she mattered, she realized her heart was important too. This was definitely a five star read for me!

This book was absolutely amazing! I didn’t know what to expect but listen Kenya came out swinging.

I loved how Kelechi moved and stuck to what she felt. Pressure had way too much whoredacity for me and literally had my pressure up. 😂 And Roman is who Pressure thinks he is.

But don’t believe me. Read what the blogs had to say and go check it out for yourself.

🎤Shade room: Pressure audacity bigger than his career!

🎤Vogue: Soft but solid

🎤Kindred: Poetic. Broken and beautifully put back together

Ok the blogs didn’t say that. But clearly these are my takeaways.

Put it on your weekend tbr and let me know what you think.

Intentions

A book where the FMC has given so much of herself to others, she isn’t her anymore. A book where the MMC is collected and his goal is to get her back to herself. This is soft and controlled. This is reassurance and intentions. This is love after heartbreak. This is interlude!

Good love, not hood love.

I love a good romance story. What’s romance without a little drama and mess. This book has it all. That’s the facts of life …. You got the good, the bad and the in between…. And it’s got music tied in between so pick it up and dive In. Kenya has proved to us you don’t need hood love to have good love.

Kelechi Scott is existing in her marriage to Malachi Scott but then she collaborates with Roman. When there is a Roman in a book, just know the man will not play about his lady. Roman met Kelechi where she was and reminded her who she was. This was a very good debut. I can't wait to see what's next.
