A book that's alive with character and that brings classical Warfare To the fore

Just so you know, this is the second in what I think will be a trio of books, as MH Foster leaves the door wide open for a sequel. This author is new to me, but after the Demon Overlord's Retirement Plan series I had to continue reading.

The series is entirely different. It also poses a few questions- where did the elves come from? Why are there only around 50,000 of them? We know that they are very long-lived and that they were involved in the evolution of humans even helping establish their language. Their society's a trade- and war-based one and that they're fighting Orcs. But they haven't done so for hundreds of years since the first and second incursions which happened a long time ago.

Then the third incursion happens and it seems the orcs are not the mindless savages they used to be and that many of the ruling elves think they still are. The war mage Elf Lords and their human janissaries know better. These two groups fight in a symbiotic magic link, the janissaries channeling energy to a war mage and making a very powerful fighting unit. Mallory, the main character, learns of War and death at a very young age. And at 11 years old he becomes an initiate into the janissaries. As the years pass, he soon learns that his parents are not just simple farmers. They also had been janissaries.

The story through the books spans from Mallory growing from an 11-year-old to becoming a twenty-something, very talented strategic janissary and then something more that makes him a unique commander. In this evolution. He's far from sure of himself and his doubts come through and his frustrations and struggles. So that makes him a very sympathetic character. At the same time he knows the realities of war, ehich is to be strategic and to allow your men to fight and die to achieve that strategy. As with most good commanders, this is a heavy burden.

The battle scenes are amazing. And the strategy and technique very authentic. I've read the Peninsular Wars and the biography of the Duke of Wellington and a lot of the formations and military strategy reminded me of that. But in this book, all of it comes alive through the characters, the character development, the world building, the emotions through it all and there's a lot, MH Foster keeps the momentum going. There are no dead spots. There's only pause for character development and plot development. Well, I'm off to read their next book.

Will there be a third (or more) in the series? Otherwise, the Epilogue makes no sense at all.
