These Ancient Bones

George Maynard has been burned so badly in his St. Augustine home that the morgue has to confirm it is even him, and beside the body is a stone carved with an ancient curse calling for flames. Which is already a wildly theatrical way to commit murder. Somebody did not just want this man dead. Somebody wanted the crime scene to have lore.
Shelly has just joined the Krewe of Hunters, the federal unit that gets called when a normal homicide investigation starts smelling faintly of ghosts and bad decisions. She can summon the dead, assuming they have stuck around. Grant can hold the hand of someone recently deceased and see what happened to them. Between the two of them, this case should have been wrapped before dinner.
Instead, nothing. No ghost. No vision. No spectral witness pointing dramatically toward the killer. Just Shelly and Grant standing over a scorched body like two people who brought expensive tools to a job and discovered the batteries were not included. The silence makes the whole thing worse because their abilities usually give them some kind of foothold. Here, somebody has planned around them.
I liked Shelly and Grant much more than Skye and Zach in The Witching Hours. These two at least feel like they are having the same conversation at the same time. Shelly wants to prove she belongs. Grant takes the supernatural seriously without turning every exchange into a haunted lecture. Their connection develops quickly, because apparently nothing speeds up intimacy like ritual murder and international travel, but I could actually see why they liked each other.
Then we get into the curse tablets, and this is where the case goes fully off the rails in a way I respected. People in the Greco-Roman world used these little objects to ask supernatural forces to ruin enemies, destroy rivals, and generally handle conflict with the emotional maturity of someone subtweeting the gods. Now a modern killer has decided to revive the practice with actual bodies attached.
The investigation moves from St. Augustine to Italy after a similar murder surfaces, because this killer apparently has both a passport and a commitment to historical accuracy. I enjoyed the travel and the old-world connections, although there were moments when everyone got so excited explaining local history that I felt like I had wandered into a ghost tour and was too polite to leave. I now know enough about ancient curses to become unbearable at museums.
Once Shelly becomes the target, the whole thing finally stops feeling like an unusual case and starts feeling personal. She has spent her career helping other people survive the worst moments of their lives, and now somebody has carved out a place for her in the ritual. Grant gets more protective, Shelly keeps pushing forward, and both of them continue entering suspicious locations with the confidence of people who apparently believe psychic abilities count as body armor.
There is something genuinely sad underneath all the paranormal chaos. Shelly and Grant are used to death opening a door for them. They touch it, speak to it, follow it backward. This time, the dead are silent, and they have to face the fact that their gifts cannot always save anyone. That hit harder than I expected.
This was 3 stars for me, and I definitely had a better time with it than The Witching Hours. Shelly and Grant worked better together, the curse-tablet murders were deliciously strange, and the jump from St. Augustine to Italy gave the whole thing a bigger, messier sense of danger. I still wanted their abilities to matter more, and some conversations sounded like everyone had prepared remarks for the Ancient Murder Symposium, but I stayed invested.

A story that is twisty and full of unexpected turns that had me guessing til the very last page.

My favorite series by this author is always filled with lots of history and suspense that keeps you guessing.
This spinoff takes us from Florida to Rome. A curse and murder with a little bit of romance is why this has been a go to for many years.
I hope there are many more to come.

After completing an assignment in Rome, Special Agent Grant Markham returns to his hometown of St. Augustine, FL only to find a similar crime has occurred there and has captured the attention Special Agent Jackson Crow, head of a special unit known as the Krewe of Hunters. Jackson’s people are all gifted with special supernatural abilities, and Grant has worked him before. But this time, Jackson has found a partner for Grant, another “Krewe” agent, Special Agent Shelly Mahoney from the west coast. They meet at the crime scene, the home of George Maynard, a well-known and well-liked investigative journalist, who has recently uncovered a huge scam involving a major security company. The burned remains of their victim are found outside his home and presumed to be George. Unfortunately, due to the state of the body, they can’t make a positive ID and Grant is not able to use his own power to confirm the victim’s identity. The only clue they have to go on is a stone tablet found near the front door with what appears to be a curse directed at George in it.
With the body count rising and each one with a new curse tablet, Grant and Shelly will follow the clues, which lead them not only through the St. Augustine area, but back to Rome. They will be joined by Special Agents and fellow Krewe members, Zach Erickson & Skye McMahon, and together they will try to untangle the mystery of the tablets before they end up on the killer’s hit list.
I am enjoying this spin off series, Grant and Shelly have an instant connection and work well together. I was also delighted to catch up with Zach and Skye who were the leads in the previous book. The mystery was chaotic at times, but everything comes together at the end and what an end it is! This book has an intriguing mystery, lots of secondary characters and even more suspects, a bit of paranormal activity, curses, a bit of spice, a brewing romance, action, twists and turns and finally a satisfying ending, complete with an epilogue. My only qualm with this book was there were a couple of dropped storylines that I would have liked to have seen tied up, but as they didn’t impact the final outcome, I was able overlook it and still thought it was a very good read. This is the second book in the series, but they are loosely connected so each book can be read as a standalone title. If you enjoy a good mystery with a bit of romance and a dash of paranormal, you need to read this book!

An enjoyable combination of romantic suspense and paranormal mystery
When a severely burned body is found at the St, Augustine home of a journalist known for blowing the whistle on corruption, it is assumed that the body is his. The FBI is called in, specifically the unit that specializes in cases with unusual elements known as the Krewe of Hunters. Shelly Mahoney and Grant Markham, two agents with unique paranormal skills, are brought in and teamed up to head the investigation. They find a stone with a curse etched into it near the body which seems to tie it to a killing that Grant had just investigated in Italy, As more victims are discovered the investigators themselves soon become a target of the person or persons behind these killings....and Shelly and Markham need help from their team and from otherworldly sources to figure out who is behind the spate of murders.
These Ancient Bones is the latest in author Heather Graham's interconnected Krewe of Hunters series, the second featuring the latest group headed by Jackson Crow following The Witching Hours, Like its predecessors, it is a murder mystery with elements of the paranormal (dead people manifesting to agents and helping out in solving the case, using physical contact with a victim to "see" what happened to them, etc) with romance woven in (partnerships in this series inevitably become romantic as well as professional ones). The team supporting Shelly and Grant includes characters from earlier books, Jackson himself as well as Skye and Zach from The Witching Hours, and overall the story follows the usual formula. It is a quick read, not terribly deep as far as character development goes, but enjoyable nonetheless. Fans of the author and her series as well as readers of Jayne Ann Krentz , Karen Robards, and Christine Feehan will likely enjoy this tale. Heather Graham delivers another entertaining paranormal mystery, and honestly, if you enjoy creepy old cities, ancient curses, ghosts who are actually helpful for once, and murder investigations with just the right amount of "wait...what?", you'll probably have a good time.
The crimes themselves were genuinely interesting and kept me guessing. St. Augustine makes the perfect backdrop because it already feels like somewhere ghosts would have excellent real estate. Add in the Krewe of Hunters team, some eerie history, and a mystery that unfolds at a nice pace, and I was happily along for the ride.
That said...there were moments when I wasn't sure if I was reading a murder mystery or a brochure from the St. Augustine Visitors Bureau. I now know so much about the city's history and landmarks that I feel like I could lead a ghost tour. The setting is wonderfully atmospheric, but every now and then the sightseeing threatened to overshadow the sleuthing.
My other complaint? Can we please slow the romance down just a tiny bit? These two go from "Nice to meet you" to "I'd trust you with my life forever" in what feels like three business days. Meanwhile, I'm still deciding if I want to share my fries with someone after six months.
Thankfully, the relationship doesn't overshadow the mystery, which is what I was really here for anyway. The paranormal elements blend nicely with the investigation, and the twists kept things interesting without becoming over-the-top.
Overall, this was a solid follow-up that delivered exactly what I expect from a Heather Graham novel: creepy atmosphere, fascinating crimes, a touch of supernatural intrigue, and characters you enjoy spending time with... even if some of them apparently fall in love at warp speed.

Overall, this was a solid follow-up that delivered exactly what I expect from a Heather Graham novel: creepy atmosphere, fascinating crimes, a touch of supernatural intrigue, and characters you enjoy spending time with... even if some of them apparently fall in love at warp speed.

I enjoyed the plot of this - there are several murders and attempted murders that keep the investigators (and readers) on their toes as they try to figure out if these events are connected and who is behind it all. There were a lot of moving pieces which kept me guessing to the end on who was behind it all.
I thought both Shelly and Grant were the right amount of paranormal investigators - they both believe in the paranormal and ghosts, but are also able to use other skills to help solve the crime. Their connection went beyond the paranormal, and in how they both seemed to be dealing with the risks that come with their job and the grief of losing people you love. All to say, I could see why they liked each other so I wasn’t surprised by their romantic subplot.
Lastly, I enjoyed all the historical elements that were interwoven in the book. I learned about St. Augustine Florida (which made me want to visit it even more), and curse tablets (which I’ll be keeping an eye out at museums for)!
At times I did find the writing and dialog hard to get into. It felt a bit stilted in how the reader learned information (either through the dialog between characters or in their internal thoughts). The dialog specifically was hard for me to imagine people actually saying - even the parts that were meant to be banter were too pointed and lacked a natural conversational flow. Additionally, there were a few loose ends that never fully came together. I understand that this was meant to be fast paced with lots of moving pieces, but I personally would have preferred a few less twists if it meant none of the moving pieces were forgotten.

The case is a sensational one. George Maynard, an investigative journalist who specializes in whistle-blowing cases, is found dead at his home in St Augustine. His body is burned beyond recognition. Shelly Mahoney is an FBI agent with a special gift who's new to the Krewe of Hunters and this will be her first case with the special unit. Her new partner will be meeting her there. Grant Markham has a gift of his own. Grant and Shelly look into George's death, but the case goes beyond him and Florida. It also takes them to Rome. And with each case, there's an odd discovery ~ "curse stones" which are based on ancient Greco-Roman tablets used to cause death to the recipient or warfare. Then they find the danger moves closer as Shelly becomes a target. As they work together to find the killers, a bond forms between Grant and Shelly.
This is the second book in The Crows series which is a spinoff of the Krewe of Hunters series, and it was a good read. The book was well-written in the sense that the story was exciting and pulled me in. However, it was not edited well. There were multiple typos and grammatical errors throughout and some other errors that were plot holes. For example, in one place our main characters ride to the hospital with a victim in the ambulance yet when they leave the hospital, they have a car there. As I'm a huge Heather Graham fan, and typically get her books automatically, this was very disappointing. Overall, the story was fascinating and kept me hooked throughout. The book had action, intrigue, romance, and suspense. I really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to more from the series.

3.5⭐ It’s been forever and a day since I’ve read a Heather Graham book, I think maybe Book 5 of her Krewe of Hunters series, so it's been a long while. These Ancient Bones is Book 2 from her The Crows series, a spin-off from the Krewe series. This book reminded me of why I loved reading her stories so, so much! The suspense left me breathless. The angst was heart-stopping. But honestly, the jumpy dialogue (when two characters are talking and there's a sudden topic change) and the dialogue itself flummoxed me. A lot of the conversations seemed trite, characters were repeating what the other just said. And the overuse of exclamation points really made me wonder who really wrote this story. I had to put it down more than a handful of times because it annoyed me to the point I started counting exclamation points instead of paying attention to the story I was reading. I even read another book during one of the breaks because I dreaded getting back into it, despite wanting to know more about the plot and wanting to get into the meat of the story. This was a big disappointment to me because I thought the tropes and the story itself intriguing but I had trouble getting through the sluggish mud of it.
I have not read Book 1 from this series, and I did not feel lost. So in that I can truly say this is a standalone story. But I’ve enjoyed Heather Graham’s books so much (long ago), that I’m planning to get The Witching Hours (Book 1), in hopes that it’s a better read.

Bringing something rooted in the Greco-Roman world into a modern murder investigation creates a nice collision between history, archaeology, and the supernatural. I really like Graham’s Krewe of Hunters series, and this is one of her spinoffs. I read the first in this series “The Witching Hour” which was good start of this new series and “These Ancient Bones” continues to grab the reader into the series. What I really enjoy about Graham’s stories are her research and history lessons that we receive while reading. Since we go between St. Augustine, Florida and Rome, Graham demonstrates her research by telling us the history of both places. I also enjoy the integration of the paranormal that each Krewe member has. This makes the series fascinating and interesting. In this story we are introduced to the newest members of the Krew of Hunters – The Crows – Grant and Shelly. They have been asked to investigate a gruesome murder in which a message was left for the victim to find. This death connects to another murder in Rome. Now Grant and Shelly are on a mission to find out who killed this people and why and what is the big picture. I recommend this series and books. Enjoy! This is the second book in a series and although I did not read book 1, I think this one could be read as a standalone without any issues.
Grant Markham is joined by Shelly Mahoney as partners in this book, both of them have supernatural abilities and that is why they are in a team called the Krewe of Hunters. If you have "unusual" capabilities, it must be nice to be in a team where these talents are not only known about but appreciated.
There are some odd murders taking place in Grant's hometown, as well as in Rome, Italy. What ties these cases together? That is the multi-million dollar question! Grant and Shelly, as well as Zach and Skye (plus Angela, their tech genius) aim to solve all.
I usually like books with a bit of a supernatural twist but in this book I felt that the talents of the main characters didn't come into play enough. There was also a lack of tension in the story, which was a shame.

In These Ancient Bones, two agents from the Krewe, a special unit investigating "strange" cases, take on the murder of an investigative journalist that leads them somewhere far more sinister. One agent can summon ghosts. The other can see a victim's final moments through touch. Ancient curse tablets, a trip to Rome, and uncovering who was really behind it all had me gripped. I finished this in one sitting.

I'm going to start by saying that I love Heather Graham and have read all 38 Krewe of Hunters books. I've started reading the 2 different spin offs from that series. I love the paranormal aspects of the books and they are like a comfort thing for me. I know that the 2 main characters will fall in love, when the sex scenes come in and that the bad guys will always be caught.

I wanted to like this book because St. Augustine is one of my favorite places in Florida.
Unfortunately, I felt like I'd come into something that I needed to have read the first...or more...books to figure out what was going on.
And while I can usually pick up what's going on in a mystery series without a fuss, this time, I felt like I was flailing around trying to connect with anyone. The fact that some of the editing was suspect (repeating the same phrase in the same run-on sentence or in the same short paragraph), the characters seemed to read very flat to me, and the descriptions were almost nil (where was the salty air? Where was the continuous breeze? Where were all the things that make St. Augustine a really cool place?), I just couldn't force myself to read any more.

Shelly and Grant make the perfect partners for investigating curse tablets and whoever is behind them. The agents meet a a crime scene in St Augustine Florida where it appears that an activist for the little guy is brutally murdered and set on fire. But all it not what it seems. Shelly and others have paranormal powers that can 'see' what others have seen before they die and leave behind a sense of what has happened. The book is very well written and the twists and turns in Florida and also in Italy make it seem as though there are nefarious forces in both countries. I totally enjoyed this book and will search out the first in the series and also the next book when it comes out. I did win a copy from Kensington. Heather Graham always entertains and shares knowledge when she writes. This is book 2 in The Crows (which is a spinoff from the Krewe) and though you are not lost I recommend starting with The Witching Hours. This is Grant and Shelleys story and as the blurb says also travels overseas. The curse that is written is creepy and has you putting ideas together. I was surprised with the culprit and the twists which always makes a book better to me. I was so excited to receive this book as an ARC through NetGalley. I've read numerous books by Heather Graham and have always enjoyed them. Having said that, I did not really enjoy this book. I had a very hard time getting into the story. It wasn't the plot of the book that didn't interest me, but the character interaction and the personalities of the characters that I found boring. There was very little banter among the Shelly and Grant in the story, and I only made it around halfway before I gave up. I don't think I've read a book as an ARC that I didn't finish and I truly hate that this was so disappointing for me. I hope to see another book by Ms. Graham in the future that I like as much as her previous titles.

I wanted to like this book. It has many elements of a story that I would enjoy, but the editing is not done well and there are inconsistencies in the story line. My copy is an ARC that I received a few days prior to release, so I have to hope that some final edits were done between this copy being printed and the final print. I rarely struggle to finish a book, but this reads like a rough draft and not a copy nearing final printing. I can ignore some typos, punctuation, and syntax errors; but there were far too many in this case.
I have not read any other books by Heather Graham, and it seems like other people have high praise for some of her other books. SO I am going to try reading one of those instead.

This is the first book I've read by Heather Graham. There was a nice mixture of mystery, suspense, romance and paranormal events. People are being killed in both Florida and Rome with "curse tablets" hidden nearby. It takes a special team of FBI agents who have some paranormal abilities to uncover the truth. The first half of the book set up the complicated mystery and cast of characters, and the second half of the book was quite suspenseful as the FBI agents put it all together. This is going to be a mixed review. I read the paperback.
4⭐️ - The storyline was good and I enjoyed it. I have read many of this author’s other books and find These Ancient Bones to be on par with the others. It is an easy and quick read.
2⭐️ - I had a difficult time forcing myself to finish reading this book. The spelling errors and grammar errors are atrocious. I honestly wondered if anyone proofed this book before the advance copies were sent out. So many instances of incorrect words that completely change the sentence. Finally, I lost count of the times the wrong character’s name was used or misspelled.

not her best
I usually love these, but this one was so boring. The romance didn’t build at all. The mystery was kind of amateur and I didn’t buy the brainwashing at all. It seems like she came up with a good idea, but didn’t execute? I dunno. And the history dumps continue to drive me nuts. I just skim them and move on. Most of this book felt like a history dump. And I am so tired of Florida. It seems like every book is either Florida, California, or Salem. Rome was nice, but fleeting and didn’t add to the story. To be honest, Rome didn’t even seem necessary and it didn’t tie into the story well.
Just sub-par.

I’m really at a loss for words. If I didn’t know better I would sincerely say that Heather Graham did not write this book.
I made it to page 11, stopping to do screenshots as I went, because this book of full of grammatical errors and redundant phrases that make it impossible for me to enjoy.
Maybe it’s my Honors English messing with my mind but did anyone even proofread this book? There’s one month before publication. On page 8, words are not spaced, format is wrong, punctuation!! (I even went back to see if there was a disclaimer I missed about it being a draft.)
Also, in the beginning where the characters are interacting with each other, no one talks like this. It’s disjointed and annoying.
Read as you prefer because the Krewe series is great in itself, but I’m out on this one. I love you Heather Graham. I’ll catch up on the next one.

Grant and Shelley are paired up for the first time while investigating a possible murder in St. Augustine, FL. Grant is a member of the Krewe and Shelley is a probably new member, but they get quickly tossed into an investigation involving curse stones, ancient gods, Rome, and Florida.
The Crows is a new offshoot of The Krewe stories, and this one does a good job of continuing a fun paranormal mystery series. As always, this is an entertaining read and the mystery definitely kept me engrossed.
