The way I thought this was a duology… and realized on the last page that this is indeed a trilogy and there is more to come 😂

This was so much fun. I love a romantasy that has an actual solid fantasy plot alongside the romance. Loved seeing the expansion of the world, the magic & the lore.

So addictive, easy to read - I can’t wait for the next!

𓈀 𓄹𓂃 thank you to netgalley and the publishers for the advanced readers copy!!

“Tomorrow, they could be rebels. Tonight, they could be free.”

the dagger in the flame is one of my favorite books!! going into this one i was SO EXCITED to go back into this world and continue this adventure along with the characters!! it felt like a reunion the second i read page one!!

i love these characters and reading about them again made me so happy!! seraphine and ransom have my heart <3 i love their banter and their dynamic is one of my favorites ever!!! the longing and pining for each other while being on opposite sides was perfection!!! i genuinely had the biggest smile on my face every time they were on page!!

the side characters are also so well written (theo, nadia, val, caruso, and some others that i can’t mention bc spoilers!!!) and i can’t wait to see more of them!!!! i also have to give some appreciation to the villains in this book because WOW!!! good villains add so much depth to a story!!!!

the plot was so utterly immersive and i could not put this book down. i never wanted it to end!!! i was rooting for these characters and have so so much hope for them!! that ending genuinely had me screaming and lowk crashing out for a second WHAT A SCARE anyways i think this was such a perfect sequel and i am so excited to see what comes next!!!!

𓈀 𓄹𓂃 quotes:

“And just like that they were bickering again. Home sweet home.”

“Don’t tempt me.”
“I live to tempt you, spitfire.”

“Did you miss me?”
“Wretchedly,”

“Your eyes are glowing again.”
“Good. Wait another minute and they might actually incinerate you.”

“In your dreams.”
“Admittedly, yes.”

“You’ve been my mark for as long as I’ve known you.”

“I can feel you staring at me.”
“You look like a painting.”
“So paint me, Dagger.”

“This . . . feels dangerous.”
“You forget, spitfire. I like to burn.”

“Would you like to experiment on me, spitfire?”
“Would you be amenable?”
Always.”

“Her eyes were golden, her magic glowing faintly under her skin. So beautiful—and otherworldly—that for a moment, it was like staring into the sun.”

“Ransom had never considered himself a jealous sort until the day Seraphine Marchant barreled into his life. Now he was all those things and more—jealous, protective, consumed by her,”

“I am not a good man, Seraphine, but I can be good to you.”
“What will you be, if not a Dagger?
“Bastian, I suppose.”

“You might miss it, you know. Being my enemy.”
“I was never really your enemy, though, was I?”
“I can distinctly remember a time when you definitely tried to kill me. Back when I was a thief.”
“Then you stole the heart right out of my chest.”

“She was a flame, and he was burning for her. Begging for more.”

“Did I hurt you?”
“How could you hurt me, Seraphine? You are my antidote.”

“Her Dagger. Her protector. Her heart.”

“Seraphine. My Seraphine.”

So here is the thing… The first 50% of this book was SLOWWWWW, it moved like molasses and I’m really hoping the future books lean into what the first half of this book set up, otherwise I’m going to be annoyed af.

BUT… the second half of this book was absolute FIRE and I couldn’t put it down. I read 300+ pages in a single sitting. The DRAMA, the REVEALS, the VILLAINS, all top tier.

So while I kind of feel like this book suffered a bit from middle book syndrome I still think it was an absolute blast to read and I am very much looking forward to the next book in the series.

Whats to love…
- still leans into the enemies to lovers vibes
- Caruso - he could have his own POV and I’d eat it up.
- top tier, absolutely deplorable villains
- easy to binge
- interesting world and magic

Whats not to love…
- pacing was slow to start

It’s like if Kaz Brekker could fathom romance. I need everyone to hop aboard this series. The cathedrals, the cobblestone, and catacombs are such a rich atmosphere. This is truly one of the most romantic books I’ve read in a minute. I believe every word Ransom utters to Serpahine. Please understand if I am left in a semi-catatonic state until book 3

Happy Release Day!!

4.25 stars

An entertaining sequel that's setting up a banger ending.

The pace on this one was pretty good. Not a lot of lulls and the story progressed very steadily. The characters, for the most part, were still really great and the dual POVs of this story works really well. Ransom continues to be the highlight of this series and the more dynamic character.

My main issue was Sera. Again, for the most part, I don't mind her character, but she was being very naive in this one, so I found myself rolling my eyes plenty of times.

But the ending was great, and I am SUPER excited for the next one. It's gonna be epic ❤️‍🔥

Thank you NetGalley and Simon and Schuster for this arc in exchange for an honest review!

Thank you to Simon Teen and NetGalley for the ARC of one of my most anticipated reads of late 2025!

This review will contain mild spoilers for 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘋𝘢𝘨𝘨𝘦𝘳 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘍𝘭𝘢𝘮𝘦 - proceed with caution!

𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘙𝘦𝘣𝘦𝘭 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘙𝘰𝘴𝘦 continues a few months after the events of 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘋𝘢𝘨𝘨𝘦𝘳 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘍𝘭𝘢𝘮𝘦. The frost is melting as winter's grip loosens on Fantome, but the frigid tension between Sera and Ransom hasn't thawed. Since fleeing the City, Sera has strengthened the Order of the Flames, hoping to increase accessibly of lightfire by convincing shade smuggler's to join her cause - and abandon Ransom's shade. He's now leading the Order of the Daggers and trying to ignore his lingering feelings for the spitfire he had come to care deeply for. Forced to work together under the King's orders, the pair battle complicated feelings and a growing resistance amidst a prophecy that is starting to unfold...

I thoroughly enjoyed this fast-paced and exciting story! As with its predecessor, the beautiful and digestible prose makes for an addictive read that I never wanted to put down. With varied character motivations and lines blurring with complicated feelings, I anticipated and questioned potential betrayals. The found family trope remains strong, and readers get to experience daggers and flames forced to coexist, which goes about exactly as you'd expect!

I loved the setting of 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘋𝘢𝘨𝘨𝘦𝘳 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘍𝘭𝘢𝘮𝘦, yet I welcomed the expansion of the world as a quest finds our characters leaving Fantome and traversing Valterre. The lore of the Saints is also further explored, adding depth to the story and politics. The magic system is intriguing, and I loved how there was an element seemingly inspired by the dancing plague as this was a dangerous, fascinating magical power to explore.

Fans of the first installment will not be disappointed when this hits shelves in September (UK) or December (US)!

so. what. the. actual. fuck.
first, tysm netgalley and the publisher and the author i NEEDED this like i needed AIR. like i need WATER. i was a dying girl and u saved me so i cannot thank you enough <3
i finished this 2 days before the archive date 😛🫰🏼 sorry guys cut it close there. i have been so crazy busy that i was reading this like my life depended on it these past few days and i do NOT regret it.

tl;dr
this is a stunning, explosive, breathtaking, anxiety inducing book that i recommend after reading the dagger and the flame. and hello?? that ending?? cruel. you cannot do this to me. i thought this was a duology but with that criminal ending it’s a trilogy! HOW DARE YOU. UGH I HAVE TO WAIT ANOTHER YEAR I CURSE YOU (i don’t sorry please write without being cumbered by a curse i am simply in the rebel and the rose withdrawal) the plot was plot-tastic and the characters were AHHHHHHHHHHH.
no further explanation.
i love them all with a burning passion (and hate some with a burning passion u know who u r). read this. well, first read the dagger and the flame, then immediately purchase this since it’ll probably be out (again sorry for the late review netgalley forgive me🫰🏼😔)

sorry i had to do some manifesting.
he is kind respectful powerful but heart of gold has to be this world class killer but just wants to be an artist. him, cyrus, jacks, kai, kaz, and carden are all the fantasy men standards and i will take no worse. he is so sweet and kind but killer and strong 🤭 im bad at articulating my thoughts abt him i love him.

seraphine🫶🏼

so in the last book i loved her. she was
•sassy (IN NOT AN OBNOXIOUS WAY)
•strong. actually strong, mentally and physically.
•SMART.
•kind.
•funny.
•caring.
she was still all of that, but it pmo when she couldn’t figure out how to use her magic until 97% in. although that frustrated me, she’s still the girl i love and i have no further complaints. ily sera more fmc’s need to be like her. she is my baby. 💗🥹

𝓹𝓵𝓸𝓽

right off the bat i was hooked. in some places i felt like it dragged and i was a little bored, to be quite frank. but other than those small dull patches (which are expected in a long fantasy book) i love how it was executed. new age of saints? messages on how power corrupts, even on the “good” side?? UGHHH ITS SO GOOD I WANT TO MARRY IT. the writing style is gorgeous. i love it. atmospheric w/o trying too hard. smart but not pretentious. the way things were set up? chefs kiss. the actual idea of the plot? chefs. kisssss. ratatouille in this bitch.

𝓬𝓸𝓷𝓼💔

spoiler: they did the eee eee hmm hmm (supposed to be sounds of a bed squeaking sorry chat) and they cured him 🚫😔 lovely idea if perhaps we used true love and not shmeccks? if i am just being a prude i apologize honestly this will work for some people it just didn’t for me. i felt cringed out and icky.
also, quotation marks were used repeatedly instead of apostrophes. ‘. like it would always say the guards” weapons. not the guards’ weapons. perhaps a stylistic choice, perhaps a typo. all i know is i didn’t like it.

all in all, i had fun, i made lasting connections to the characters, i loved the plot, and i 100% recommend this book and the book preceding it.

Thank you to Simon and Schuster Children's Publishing | Margaret K. McElderry Books, Netgalley and Catherine Doyle for providing me the eARC in exchange for my honest review.

This book picked up right from where Book 1 ends (with a very slight lag), so its narrative was full of action from the get-go, providing for a fast-paced read. We were introduced to new characters and new parts of the world beyond Fantome, as well as a much clearer picture of the magic system and what it can do.

The romantic tension between the leads continues to be greatly maneuvered by the author with their conflicting motivations keeping them at bay from one another, even when they most ardently wish to be together. I really like how their relationship developed in this book now that Ransom no longer has to kill Seraphine, and they must work together to find the 'People's Saint'. Of course, the problems would only arise after they get to this new figure since their missions differ significantly.

Getting to know the world beyond Fantome also greatly increased my enjoyment, especially as we get introduced to new characters that completely changed the stakes and have set up for a very intense Book 3. Particularly, I am very curious to see more of Anouk and how her relationship with Ransom might develop.

I confess I smelled something fishy the moment they mentioned grave robbing but never did I think that THAT plot twist was the reason why, which gets me excited to see how it will all play out in Book 3! The new villain character definitely took me by surprise as well, and how his power is set up has me believing that the next book will have a massive battle, but let's see.

As far as character development goes, I think Ransom's might have been ever so slightly better. I feel like out of the two POV characters, he was the most introspective one and most willing to put in the work to change once he realized that was better for him in the long run. Seraphine's character still has some internal blockages that I assume are there on purpose, but it was a little frustration to see so little change from her throughout the narrative.

I will admit I was expecting this to be a duology so as we were nearing the 90% mark, I started to get a little worried because things were not being tied up nicely. Having said that, I think that Book 2 had enough twists and turns that it doesn't feel like a filler and genuinely needs a follow up so the narrative can breathe, so I'm not unsatisfied!

I think this book is a good second book in a trilogy, the plot evolved and prepared for the third book very logically, the world building was good in book 1, so everything made sense in this one.
I loved the beginning of the book so MUCH, the situations in which the MCs were made for delectable yearning 🫦
I was disappointed by Sera’s naïveté in the middle of the book? But she was reasonable again pretty quickly. The end stressed me out really bad.
Caruso was also a very good addition to the cast of characters, I always enjoy a comedic-relief, arrogant character.

Either way, will be waiting for the third book, I wonder what color will be the cover 🤔

Gahh I had the best time being back with Sera and Ransom!! The Dagger and the Flame was in my top reads of 2024, and I was so excited to finally get to read the sequel. The beginning of The Rebel and the Rose was off to a bit of a slow start getting back into the story, but once things picked up again, they really took off for good. The second half was a roller coaster and there were so many twists and turns.

I loved the way Seraphine and Ransom were fiercely protective over one another and always had each other’s best interests in mind even when they were on different sides. The enemies to lovers trope is so good in this series. The way that the plot point with Seraphine’s powers played out was different than I was expecting in a good way.

This series is YA, and it comes out in the writing sometimes, BUT the content is actually pretty intense at points. I would recommend for the older young adult/adult crowd.

A rich, character-driven sequel full of banter, magic, and chaos. If you loved book one, this one expands the world in exciting ways and sets up a finale that promises to be unforgettable.

Rating: 4.5⭐️

This sequel really beat book 1 for me—not just because of the romance or the main plot, but because of the world, the magic, and especially the side characters. Cat has such a talent for creating a setting that feels alive, and in this sequel we get to see so much more of Valterre. Every new glimpse into its landscapes, magic, and history made me fall in love with it even more.

I know some readers might say the first half is “slow,” but honestly? I relished it. The sneaking, the traveling, the chance to explore new corners of Valterre while also gathering small hints for what’s to come—it’s the kind of worldbuilding I adore. And since I love the side characters, those road trip vibes with the whole cast together were some of my favorite chapters. If there’s one thing Cat does better than almost anyone, it’s found family dynamics, especially the banter and bickering. I was smiling (and sometimes cackling) through so many of their interactions.

And speaking of side characters—can we talk about how Nadia grew on me?? I never expected to care about her as much as I did, but here we are. And then Caruso… excuse me, Caruso is suddenly rivaling Theo for my favorite character?! How dare he. His little moments with Val were SO good, I was honestly more invested in those subtle interactions than anything else at times.
Still, Theo keeps his crown for me—cool, collected, brilliant, and the perfect anchor among a group of hotheads. I love him dearly, though I couldn’t shake some foreshadowing… and I’m terrified about what’s in store for him. Protect Theo at all costs, please.

Of course, this is still Sera and Ransom’s story, and I appreciated that their feelings for each other were never in question—it’s the circumstances holding them back. Their dynamic had tension and longing without unnecessary drama, which made their relationship feel grounded even when the plot got wild.

And speaking of the plot—what a ride. This sequel takes us in a bold new direction, introducing new lore, new characters, and raising the stakes in ways I didn’t see coming. The last act is chaos in the best way—twists, reveals, and high-stakes that had me glued to the page. That ending sets up book three to be explosive, and I am so ready.

⚠️ Now, a teeny-tiny nitpick section (with HUGE SPOILERS, so skip if you don’t want to know):

As much as I adore this series, there were two things that didn’t work for me.

First, the spice. For a YA book, I personally prefer romance to stay more emotional than physical, and the sudden adult-level scenes pulled me out of the story—especially when they don’t add much to the characters or romance.

Second, the new magic powers.
One thing I loved about book one was the powder-based system—how the Shade/Lightshade were dangerous but accessible to anyone.
The addition of saints and giving Sera/Ransom massive new powers by the end of the book felt a little too much, like it was leaning into the “make the main couple super OP” trope, instead of the unique system that first drew me in. But that's just a personal preference.

That said, none of this overshadows the fact that I had a fantastic time reading this book.
The found family, the banter, the worldbuilding, and the sheer fun of watching all these characters clash and bond made it an absolute delight.
Even if I don’t feel as invested in Sera and Ransom personally, the side characters and the story itself have me hooked, and I’ll 1000000% be continuing the series.

• My Reading Experience: I’m intrigued, but…
• Book Spice: Level 0.5
• Adjusted Rating: 3.75 stars!!!
• POV: 3rd Person / Dual

• Content Thoughts:

After finishing book one, I had to jump straight into this one because I needed to know what was going to happen next. No way was I ending on that note without answers!

This story had a much slower pace than the first. It felt more like a voyage or a transition book rather than an action-packed continuation. While that’s not necessarily a bad thing, it just wasn’t as intriguing to follow. I definitely missed some of the playful, cutesy banter that made me fall in love with book one.

A lot of what happened felt predictable, but there was one moment that actually caught me off guard—and I love that for me 😂.

Even though it wasn’t as exciting as I hoped, I still enjoyed the direction the story took. With how everything progressed and wrapped up, I’m genuinely looking forward to the next book and can’t wait to see where things go from here.

Thank you Simon Teen for the eARC in exchange for my honest review!

was expecting a little more out of this! it started out SO good then fizzled out a little and became very slow to get through. might be because this has now expanded from a duology to a trilogy, which is amazinggg for the author but lowkey was expecting things to wrap up in book 2! not sure if i’ll pick up book 3 but we shall see!

Overall star rating (out of 5⭐️): 4.25 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Spice level (out of 5🌶️): 2 🌶️ (open door but vague description)

Content review: The first half of the books is just yearning and yearning and some more yearning between the main characters…But then the second half of the book it gets really good! Action, betrayal and lots of twists and turns. I really look forward to the next instalment.
When it comes to the characters I find it a bit unbalanced. On one hand side they are ruthless contract killers but then on the other hand side blush if any hints towards sex are made.

Narrator review: great narrators! Love how they have a female and a male narrators, makes it much more enjoyable! 4 out of 5

Tags: betrayal, dark vibes, evil creatures/monsters, fantasy, forced proximity, good banter, great storyline, high fantasy, magic, morally grey mmc, political intrigue, resurrection, romantasy, slow burn, young adult

Tropes: enemy to lover, he falls first and harder, touch her and die

❤️ Love interest: Ransom x Seraphine (Sera)

I swear I'll go bankrupt this year

4,5/5

What an amazing book
It was a bit slow at the beginning (and I was also a bit bored by the fact that every time they had an intimate moment, someone would interrupt them and it was like that literally all the time, I forgive it), but again, the second half was absolutely AMAZING

The amount of plot twits
The banter between Val and Caruso was so funny
Ransom's selflessness
Seraphine's humour
And lots of blood, death and guts

I LOVED IT
