This book is brimming with excellence. A fascinating read. Well-researched, beautifully written and with profound love and admiration for the subject, Las Edades del Tango proposes an alternative reading of tango history, acknowledging the different stylistic periods, but proposing a new division into "edades" or "ages": the age of sentiment (= the era of Gardel and the Guardia Nueva), the age of prosperity (= the golden age of the tango orchestras), the age of rupture (the tango nuevo), the age of memory (= tango revival from 1983-2009) ... Sergio Pujol is one of the foremost knowledgeable contemporary writers about tango & its universe (check out his equally fantastic books about Discepolo or Rudolph Valentino). Las Edades del Tango is without a doubt one of the most comprehensive overviews of the history of tango and establishes itself firmly as a reference point for future writers on the subject.
Behind a socio-economic, cultural and political backdrop, Pujol weaves his history of tango, its development of styles and its main protagonists (musicians, singers and poets). He also manages to include literature and the emerging film business into the fold capturing the essence at every turn, beautifully connecting the dots between the different styles. Interesting ruminations about traditional versus evolutionary ideas and excellent descriptions of stylistic influences shaping different artists throughout the colourful history of this genre. For instance the chapter on Anibal Troilo (here affectionately referred to as "el Buda del arrabal") explores the impact of D'Arienzo (tempo), Gardel (phrasing) and De Caro (orchestration) on his early orchestra. Also the chapter on the rise of the cancionistas (followed by their sudden dissapearance during the 40s era) is a riveting read.
If you can read in Spanish (here's hoping for a non-AI english translation - the book certainly merits it) and have an interest in tango, this should be on top of your list. An instant classic.
