When You Inherit a Farm Always Check for Spooks!

Small backstory:

Roger and his family have inherited a Christmas tree farm but though he doesn't really know much about growing trees he doesn't look a gift horse in the mouth so he moves his family to the farm.

However as time goes on there are some quirky things that happen on the farm that makes the family wonder what they got themselves into and wondering what is happening on the farm with the weird things happening to them.

That is about all I can hand out with a small backstory without giving away spoilers so if you are intrigued then go read this book!

Thoughts:

This was my second book by this author and I really enjoyed the story. The book is set up as an Advent Calendar where you would read a chapter every day however I just read the whole thing as I became caught up in the story and wanted to keep reading.

The story had some spookiness to it but different things that happened in the story made me chuckle some too. It wasn't a scary horror story but just a fun and festive holiday horror book that captured my attention. Looking forward to reading more books by this author as it seems he has quite a few books out there. Giving this book four "Tinsel Tree Terror" stars!

Haters gonna hate, unless, of course, you walked into this expecting a fun, rompy Christmas horror story. In which case… congratulations, because that’s exactly what this book is.

So what if there are typos sprinkled throughout, like those rogue strands of tinsel you keep finding weeks after the tree is gone.

So what if the story takes its sweet time and then hurls the ending at you like a runaway train, leaving an ectoplasmic smear of blood and bodies in its wake.

I still thought it was cute... a festive little horror snack perfect for a lazy December afternoon. And no, I didn't read it advent‑style. Sure, it’s a charming idea in theory, but are there reaaallly people out there who crack these things open on December 1st and then dutifully read one chapter a day all month long. Pssshhh. Couldn’t be me.

Sometimes you just want a book that’s merry, messy, and mildly unhinged. This one delivers.

Of the horror/thriller advent books I've read so far...as fun as they have all been...I think this one is easily my favorite. Great as an advent but I think also just a fun Christmas horror read as well. This does a great job of slowly building up to the end but also...the end felt natural and not overly rushed. The last chapter was definitely the longest but not absurdly so...maybe 20 minutes instead of the 5-10 minutes the other chapters took to read...and it was definitely needed to wrap things up. Highly recommend this one either as a December advent or just as a Christmas horror read. So happy I read this and would definitely read it again.

“You die here. In the dark. Alone. If you wake up still here in the next life, and hear the ringing of a bell, go to it. Follow the robed man to wherever it is he takes the likes of you. Because if you don’t and I catch you hanging around here by sunrise, I will make your next life hell on earth.”

Marked by the unimaginable tragedy of losing a child, Kate and Roger were forced to flee the life they lived before and settle hundreds of miles away. When Roger’s uncle Art passed away and left behind a house with a flourishing Christmas Tree business, the young family packed up their teenage daughter Olivia (Livvy), and six year old twins; Julia and Jude. Settling into the old house brought on figments of spirits and unexplainable situations that slowly left Ktae questioning he own sanity again. Heavily medicated after the death of Olivia's twin brother Adam, their mother swore she saw and communicated with their dead child. Tucking him into bed late at night, watching him across the room, and speaking to him as if he still sat beside her was enough for her husband to push her into therapy and eventually medications to stop the hallucinating. When Jude began seeing James, a young boy with yellow eyes, his parents didn't want to believe in anything supernatural. Playing in the rusty cellar with an equally rusted toy car, they're scared he'll get hurt and eventually banish him from the cellar all together. Secured with a padlock and chains, James would tell Jude the combination and once again he will play.

“I have never gone away,” James said. “I’ve been here all the time. Watching you. Waiting for the day of your judgment. It has arrived. Now, I am given permission to intercede. I died young; you die old. And yes, you will certainly die this night. It is my gift to this family you thought to destroy.”

With the begining embers of a crush flaring inside Olivia towards Noah, she also has a constant battle on her hands against Jeanette and Ronnie, two hired helps from years ago. Engaged in a rough on and off again relationship, Olivia had been warned to steer clear of them both by multiple other employees but unfortunately being paired together in the Winter Village keeps the girls at spitting distance. Learning than Jenaeete had a young son run over and killed by her ex husband, Olivia tries to gain into her graves by telling her she understood the pain and grief associated. Backfiring, it became a nearly deadly brawl as Ronnie armed himself with a chainsaw and treated Olvina and the two elves (Tony and Gambo). Knowing she needs to confuse in her father, she also discovered bloody and torn children's overalls in the barn, something Carl argued about ever knowing about. Wanting to surprise the family, Roger with the help of Carl brought a squirming Labrador puppy into the house before convincing them to close their eyes and follow him into the woods. Seeing the other employees unconscious and tied up, Carl wasted no time doing the same with his employer and his family. Waking up, Carl begins his rantings of the owning the farm again as it once belonged to his own family. Planning to kill everyone here and then himself, his greatest feat was going to be leaving everything to his grandson Noah. The same boy Olivia fawned over and went on a date with. While Nude and Julia managed to be united by James and take off towards the woods and their house. Chased by Noah, it would be the vengeful spirit of Uncle Art who terrified the boy so badly he tumbled down the stairs and left himself paralyzed. Crammed inside of a trunk in the attic, it's now James’s chance for revenge. Killed as a child by his own brother, James would shove Carl back into the wood chipper where he would be killed in front of the remaining survivors. As the story began wrapping up, Adam's spirit made one last visit to see the family he left behind before he was taken along with James by Art towards the man who rings the bells.

The figure was tall and lean, almost gaunt. It was hard to make out much about him, save for the fact that he wore a long coat and a wide- brimmed hat. And there was one more detail. A tiny flare of reddish light awakened at the center of the man’s face. No, Jude realized. It’s not his face, but something near the end of it. The light winked out of existence once more, and Jude remembered what it was. The man was smoking a cigarette.

I picked up I Bought a Haunted Christmas Tree Farm expecting a quirky holiday horror story, and it delivered that with a fun twist: it’s designed to be read advent-style, one chapter a day leading up to Christmas. That format adds a surprising amount of charm, making the suspense unfold gradually—almost like opening a new spooky present each day. It gives the story a playful seasonal rhythm that sets it apart from typical holiday reads.

The cast of eccentric seasonal employees and the strange happenings around the farm keep the daily chapters engaging. Each installment reveals just enough to build dread while still leaving you eager for the next “door” to open. Roger’s struggle to balance running the farm with uncovering its sinister secrets works especially well in this format, because the mystery deepens piece by piece the way an advent countdown should.

The ending genuinely took me by surprise, pulling together the slow-building clues into a finale that was sharper and darker than I expected. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience—both the story itself and the way its advent structure enhances the tension. It’s a perfect pick for anyone wanting a holiday read that mixes festive fun with a steady drip of fear.

Roger and his family stumble into unexpected good fortune when he inherits his eccentric uncle’s Christmas tree farm (despite the title saying “bought”). What seems like a holiday miracle quickly turns sinister as strange dreams, eerie encounters, and a malevolent presence begin targeting the farm—and especially the children.

This was another advent-style holiday horror read, though I didn’t read it day-by-day this time. The holidays were chaotic, so I knocked it out in one lazy evening. It’s a super quick, fun, kitschy horror story, and honestly, I’d absolutely watch this as a cheesy Hallmark-or-Netflix-style holiday horror movie.

I did enjoy this more than the Thanksgiving Table one by the same author. This one actually had more spooky, ghostly vibes, which I appreciated. Yes, there were some typos, but considering how quickly this was put out for Christmas, they were easy enough to overlook. The ending was silly—as expected—and nothing about this is meant to be groundbreaking horror.

If you’re looking for a fast, festive read to help knock out your yearly goal, this one works just fine. Just don’t go in expecting anything superb—this is pure holiday fluff with ghosts and blood. 🎄👻

This book was weird in the best way. I picked it up for the title alone (because honestly, how could you not?), and it ended up being such a fun holiday horror read.
It all starts while Roger inherits the farm and decides to start anew with his family.
The setting is everything: a small-town Christmas tree farm with an unsettling past and just enough festive cheer to make the horror hit harder. Sam Whitaker does a great job blending spooky folklore with dark humor, so you’re never quite sure whether to laugh or feel uneasy… usually both at the same time.
It’s technically an advent-style book, meant to be read a little at a time, but I was way too impatient for that and ended up binging it anyway with no regrets. It’s fast-paced, super readable, and doesn’t overstay its welcome, with the scares coming quickly as the farm’s history slowly unravels.

This is the perfect read if you want something seasonal but not sugary - a little horror mixed in with your holiday vibes. Think Christmas lights, pine needles, and something watching you from the trees.

This was easily my favorite Christmas horror advent book I have read so far. It works perfectly as a chapter a day read but is just as satisfying if you binge it all at once. The story slowly builds tension without ever feeling dragged out, and every chapter ends in a way that makes it so hard to stop. The atmosphere around the tree farm felt unsettling from the start, with small strange details piling up until everything finally clicks. When the ending came, it felt earned and complete, not rushed, and the longer final chapter was exactly what the story needed.

What really stood out to me was the emotional side of the story alongside the horror. The themes of grief, family, and trying to start over hit just as hard as the creepy moments. The kids seeing things they should not and the mystery surrounding the people on the farm kept me constantly questioning what was really going on. The ending was brutal but also bittersweet, and it stayed with me long after I finished. I would absolutely recommend this as a December read or anytime you want a solid Christmas horror story that delivers on both scares and heart.

Roger’s uncle Art has passed away and left his Christmas tree farm to him. Roger and his family move in to help with the business, but soon his six-year-old twins start seeing a strange man in their room who vanishes as quickly as he appears—and who exactly is his son’s new friend?

I had my entire December TBR planned out, and then Sam sneakily released a new Christmas book. Naturally, I dropped everything to read it, and once again I wasn’t disappointed. I think this might be my favourite in the Haunted Places series so far. It’s an advent-style book with a chapter per day, but there was no way I was limiting myself, because once I started, I couldn’t stop.

The ending was brutal, but also incredibly bittersweet. As a parent who has lost a child, those final scenes had me bawling like a baby while my fiancé looked at me like I’d lost my mind.

I can’t wait to see what comes next in this series.

Another trip around advent reading. This one was about a family that had suffered a tragedy and needed to move on and start over. A Christmas tree farm was left to Roger via his uncle. When the family began to settle into a new life, strange things began to occur. As each day passes, something different changes. There are hints of ghostly figures, imaginary friends and suspicious workers. I think the best part about these books is trying to read ONE chapter a day! I wanted to read ahead because of how each chapter ended but I used all kinds of distractions to not read ahead. So if you like this kind of book; either read it one day at a time or all at once. However you choose to read this book; just read it!

I really wanted to like this book. The concept alone (haunted tree farm, Christmas, and advent-style format with one chapter per day) had so much potential, and the beginning hooked me. Unfortunately, it just didn’t come together in the end. There were so many loose ends introduced along the way that by around chapter 23, I was really wondering how on earth everything was going to be wrapped up in time… and it felt like the author had that same realization. The final chapter tried to answer everything at once, but it was way too rushed. While I think all the questions technically got answered, it was crammed, confusing, and not very satisfying.

I Bought A Haunted Christmas Tree Farm was the perfect blend of holiday cheer and creepy chaos. This advent-style read is set up as one chapter a day, and somehow…I actually managed to hold out and stick to it.

The atmosphere is immaculate; festive, eerie, and just unsettling enough to keep you hooked while still feeling fun. Each chapter ended with just enough tension to make waiting for the next day a challenge, but in the best way.

If you love your Christmas stories with a side of horror, this one absolutely delivers. A must-read for anyone who believes December can (and should) be spooky too.

This book is #5 in the Strange Haunted Places series. It is an advent-style book with 25 chapters for the 25 days leading up to Christmas. The Calloway family has just moved into the title location, inherited from a dead uncle and their last chance for recovery from a few rough years. Strange happenings and weird things leave the family feeling haunted and scared, especially the 6-year-old twins. You do not have to read a chapter a day, but it is fun to try to do so, especially if you join in on an author-led discussion online. The entire series makes a nice group of horror books for fans of such stories.

I normally dont mind grammatical errors, but there were so many. This book reads like a high school student wrote it or something. It had a decent story, but the delivery was just not it for me. The description of scenes were vague and plain and then you had big long words sprinkled in to make it seem more intelligent I guess. If my brain was able to let me DNF a book this would have been one. Thankfully it was a quick read. Im not sure it would've held my interest reading it as an advent. I read Per Jacobsen's christmas advent last year and really enjoyed it so much more.

Roger and his family (wife Kate, teen daughter Olivia, and young twins Jude and Julia) move to the tree farm he's recently inherited from an uncle just in time for the holiday season. Creepy things start happening immediately.

This was a good one! I did not trust any of the tree farm employees.I didn't even trust our main characters! Were these things really happening to them? Was it all in their heads? Every day of this advent style book, the dread built until it culminated with outright horror on Christmas Day! The twist is unexpected and so satisfying!

I picked this one up because I read “I Bought a Haunted Thanksgiving Table” and I loved it. This one was a little slower to get started and had a more upbeat ending but it has all the gore, lunacy and creepiness that keeps me turning the pages. I lied to myself and said I’d read it Advent style (one chapter a day) but I ended up binge reading it cause once it got rolling I didn’t want it to stop. Definitely a fun little Christmas slasher!

(3.5) This is a fun advent holiday read a character per day holiday horror story. There are 25 short chapters. This was a fun read along with the group but I had a couple of questions: 1. What happened to Jackson? 2. What happened with the police on day 16 when the body was found and the police came out? Nothing was resolved with that? There were a couple of loose strings. This is book 5 of the Strange Haunted Places Series. You do not have to read them in order.

I bought a Haunted Christmas Tree Farm

An advent calendar style story, theme: thriller/mild horror. It kept me hooked and I stuck with the 'one chapter per day' asides for the last chapter I choose to read that a day early. Lots went down in the last two chapters and I absolutely LOVED it!!
Keen to dive into more of Sam's book

So far I have read this, and haunted Thanksgiving Table.

MERRY CHRISTMAS 🎄

This is the second Advent book of Mr. Whittaker's I've read.
While I liked this one, it seemed a bit rushed. It would have been better if the events of the last couple of chapters were stretched out a little more, instead of just smooshed together like they were.
It was still a pretty good read though and I have no regrets reading it. It definitely makes you think about those who can't share the holidays with you anymore; that's for sure.

I never do well with these advent type books because I never follow the rules LOL I don’t think I would have the patience to wait day by day for each chapter! I really enjoyed this one I think I expected more haunting and scary things but overall it was a really good story of a family who inherited a tree farm where things weren’t as they seemed!

this book genuinely had some scary moments. I couldn't read it before bed time, but I am also very sensitive about ghosts. I loved everything about this story even if I was having a heart attack each day; both from the ghosts and from the mystery. I didn't see (most) of the ending coming at all. Great book!

A great holiday horror book to read Advent style! If you like to support independent authors, give Sam's books a try!

Roger and Kate inherit a ghost filled Christmas tree farm full of quirky tree farm employees and their 3 kids are trying to adjust to the huge change. Strange things happen as they don't realize farm is haunted.

This was a fun advent-style Christmas book. The interactive reader group on Facebook with the author’s daily presence made it even more entertaining! Even without that, the story was filled with a good amount of suspense, a nicely wrapped up ending, and I made all the wrong guesses about the ghosts, so that was a nice little twist!

I liked that it was actually haunted because I hate when books end with a logical explanation and was never actually haunted. But I think I missed something bc how did Adam get there? It didnt sound like he died there. I liked the twist but the set up seemed random and not well explained.

Boring not the book I thought it was

This book was more about the farm and the people that worked there, not so much about the haunted aspect. Only about two chapters talked about the ghosts . I finished this book only because I hate leaving books dnf.
