Where I'd Rather Be

Rate this book
As a woman, no one said having it all would be easy. Sometimes being the boss has a cost, but if men can do it, why can’t women?

Beauty mogul Lana Ja’Rae is that girl. From building and running her own cosmetic company to being a well-rounded woman, she is the epitome of a black girl’s wildest dream. Lana’s success has come with many highs and sacrifices, but the one thing she has yet to conquer is a love worth fighting for. When love doesn’t meet her standards, Lana finds herself forgetting what was and falling for what could be. In this story protection is the key, and with her protector is where she’d rather be.

Welcome to Gravity Hills, where love is the main attraction. Where black love is the standard, and all hearts beat unruly. Of course the nature of love doesn’t come so easy.

This author is new to me, and I’ll say this first—she definitely held my attention with this novella. We’re following Lana Ja’Rae, a billionaire beauty guru and mogul, who needs security and enters Tahj Stanley, an ex-con who lands the job.

The attraction between them? Oh, you can feel it off the page, and I loved that. I’m big on seeing feelings build in real time instead of being told later, and this story did that well.

Now what I wanted more of the why. I needed more depth around Tahj’s time in jail and a bigger confrontation between him and his baby mama. Even the showdown with Lana’s ex felt anticlimactic, and I didn’t think it really called for the length of the break the two took afterward. I was waiting for a bigger payoff that never quite landed.

I also had a few pacing issues, which is why this didn’t quite hit a solid 4 stars for me. But overall? I’m intrigued. Truly Cerys is definitely an author I’d read again. (3.5/5)

Where I’d rather be

This was a really good story. I loved the chemistry and bond built between Tahj and Alana. Their connection was natural and organic. I also loved how she encouraged him to pursue his dreams and he did the same for her.

All the feels

This is my first time reading from this author, and I can't wait to read more of their work! This was a beautiful story. I loved the pace and the flow..nothing seemed rushed. A bodyguard romance is one of my favorite tropes and this was truly a joy to read.
