I am a big fan of Rachel Amphlett’s books so I jumped at the chance to listen to book 15 in the Detective Kay Hunter series, What Evil Hides.

I swear these books are getting darker and darker with each new one. This one has a brutal murder, the victim found strung up in a hop field in Kent. The victim is so badly disfigured that it takes the team a while to even make an identification. This is a tough case, full of misdirection and lies from potential witnesses and suspects. Kay and the team have their work cut out for them once again, with the media and upper brass wanting answers.

Police procedurals are my favourite kind of crime fiction and this series is a favourite. I always look forward to getting my hands on new ones, and I devoured this in a day. Alison Campbell is Kay Hunter to me, she is amazing narrating these books.

Thank you so much Dreamscape Select for my ALC. out on February 9th.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.

What Evil Hides was my first book by Rachel Amphlett, and it definitely won’t be my last. This novel is packed with suspense from start to finish and kept me questioning who the murderer was right up until the very end. The pacing is strong, the crime scenes are gripping, and the mystery is layered enough to keep you fully engaged.

The detective character is well written as she is smart, determined, and compelling which adds depth to the investigation and makes the story even more enjoyable. Fans of Lisa Gardner will feel right at home with this book, as it delivers intense crime scenes, solid police work, and plenty of twists.

Overall, this was a very satisfying crime thriller and a great introduction to Amphlett’s writing. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves fast-paced, suspenseful mysteries with a strong detective at the center.

Review for 'What Evil Hides' by Rachel Amphlett.

PUBLICATION DAY 9TH FEBRUARY

Yet another absolutely incredible and griping book by the incredible Rachel Amphlett. I have read several books in both her 'Detective Kay Hunter' series and her 'Detective Mark Turpin' series and would highly recommend them both! It is also the fifteenth book in his 'Detective Kay Hunter' series but each book in both of these series can be read as a standalone.

Wow!!!! Just flipping wow!!!! What another absolutely epic page turner!!! Well done Rachel!!! Another addictive, explosive and gripping must read!

This book is extremely well written with vivid descriptions creating the perfect atmosphere for the storyline. The book cover and synopsis works perfectly with the book plot and I am most definitely looking forward to reading the next book, and the previous one in this series.

I don't normally like reading or recommend reading books out of order but if you start with this one, and nobody could blame you with its stunning cover, then have no fear there is a silver lining to reading later books in a series first! That silver lining is that once you have read this, become hooked and found a new favourite author (which you will) you can then go back and get sucked into the previous fourteen books in this series (plus her books in her Mark Turpin series ) while you are impatiently waiting for the next book in this series to be released. I just hope that she is busy writing that while I am typing this as I needed it the second I finished this one!! I best get a move on with so many books to read that I have sadly missed but considering I can guarantee they are all amazing even if they are just half as good as this book they are guaranteed to be epic which means I will fly through them like I did with this book!! This is one of the few books that I have listened 100% on Audiobook. If I listen to a book on audiobook I usually also read the physical book between but I listened to the whole book and I was impressed! I must say a HUGE congratulations to the narrator Alison Campbell who did an absolutely incredible job of bringing this story to life. I would listen to it in the car and while walking at any opportunity and Alison did a fantastic job on both male and female characters voices as well as accents and portraying the characters emotions through her voice!!! I'm not only looking forward to reading more books by Rachel but also to listening to more books narrated by Alison! I have also listened to 'The Lodge' by Sue Watson and 'A Fatal Silence' by Rachel Amphlett (book 14 in this series) which Alison Campbell also narrated and I would highly recommend them both. I am not going to go into detail with the storyline as the publisher has told you all you need to know in the synopsis so to find out more you need to grab your copy of this absolutely gripping page turner to discover more for yourselves and I promise that you will not regret it!! In fact, if you are anything like me you may even discover a new favourite Detective and author! With an addictive storyline ram packed with mystery, murder, crime, twists, secrets, red herrings, drama, lies, action, tension, suspense, police procedural plus so much more what are you waiting for? One thing I absolutely loved about this series is that Rachel has the perfect balance of Detective Kay's work life and investigation as well as giving the reader an insight into her personal life ensuring she creates a character that her readers can really get to know. This book is an absolutely addictive, nail biting, page turning, heart racing and compelling storyline in an absolutely amazing series!! It has so many layers of mysteries and crimes for the reader to be kept guessing throughout. This fantastic thriller is absolutely packed with twists, turns, shocks, crime and red herrings throughout I had no idea who the killer was and I was gob smacked when their identity is finally revealed!! I would never have seen that one coming!! This is an achievement in itself as it is definitely getting harder to surprise me with the amount of crime novels I've read so a HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to Rachel!! . There was so many explosive bombshells in this book that I actually lost count on how many times I was shocked which I didn't think would be possible!!! The plot was unique and realistic and Rachel's brilliant descriptions along with Alison Campbell's brilliant narration really brings absolutely everything to life in front of your eyes. It started straight in the action and kept you going on a roller-coaster ride of suspense and mystery throughout. There were several occasions when my heart was in my throat and I the hair was raising on my arms but I won't mention those as not to spoil it for future readers. It is so hard to not say too much without giving anything away to future readers but I'm sure once people have read it they will know exactly what I mean. Well done Rachel you did absolutely amazing and everything was tied up perfectly. The twists and turns in this book left me going from one chapter to another!!! I completely devoured it in one sitting as I just could not put it down. Prepare yourself for a rollercoaster ride!!! I just could not put this book down and I cannot wait to read more books in this series!!!

Before you start this make sure you clear your schedule because once you pick it up you are not going to want to put it down!!!!

The characters were very realistic, multi layered and well rounded and again their personalities reflected the storyline and how they would act, etc perfectly. The descriptions gave a really good in depth view of how the characters were feeling and what they were thinking. The characters were complex and each seemed to be hiding their own secrets which leaves you questioning who is telling the truth and who can be trusted. they had their own unique personalities with individual flaws, quirks, secrets, strengths and weaknesses!! I loved getting to know Detective Kay Hunter more along with the rest of the team and really cannot wait to see how they have all developed from the first book in this series which is called 'Scared To Death'. I don't want to say too much about the characters though and I will leave you to read this amazing book and work it out yourself. I will say that it was not just Kay that I enjoyed meeting and became completely invested in but also the rest of the investigative team, I could literally go on and on but I am going to wrap it up here so I do not bore you too much! Each of the characters were well developed, unique and thanks to Rachel's fantastic evocative writing skills and Alison's brilliant narration they all came to life before my eyes. Whether you love or hate these characters, they all have their own strong unique personalities and they all bring the story to life playing their roles perfectly. here's to the next explosive book in this absolutely epic series!!! This is exactly why you are in my favourite authors club Rachel and why this is one of my favourite crime series!!!

Overall an absolute must read, pulse racing, addictive page turning crime thriller that will keep you on edge and addicted.

At the risk of repeating what is essentially the same intro that I’ve written many times before, I’m somewhat hard to please when it comes to crime novels. I’ve read too many of them over about the last 35 years and still continue to do so.

This means that, if a new or new-to-me author has written a good piece of crime fiction and expects to receive my approval, he, she or they can forget it. The best they can hope for is a quiet yawn whilst I try to think of something to say. ‘Superb’ is the minimum required for me to take notice and even then, it might not be enough to persuade me to immediately read more books by the same author. For that to happen, the book has got to be ‘something a bit special’.

I may, thanks to Zooloo’s Book Tours, have just found that book. It’s called What Evil Hides by well-established, but new-to-me author Rachel Amphlett.

This is a book that effortlessly gripped me from start to finish, and on reflection I was initially left wondering how. I could describe it, not inaccurately, as a detailed police procedural in which, after the initial hook of a particularly grim murder scene, Detective Inspector Kay Hunter and her team spend most of the book getting nowhere with their investigation until a sudden chance breakthrough. But to do so would make the book sound a bit dull, and I must therefore immediately apologise to Rachel Amphlett and start again. Because it’s anything but.

With the notable exception of the DI Kim Stone series by my current favourite author, Angela Marsons, I’m struggling to think of a crime fiction novel that does so many things quite so well as this one. The plotting is little short of brilliant. There’s a whole multitude of suspects – some a lot less likeable than others – and still more twists and red herrings, and the book maintains a rapid pace as it flips from one into another. And yet, on review, and in hindsight, all of the clues are there.

The scenes, too, are wonderfully and vividly described. I know pretty much nothing about hop farming – and had no idea what a ‘bine’ was until I started reading this book – yet the subject has clearly been researched in detail, and then portrayed in a way that even I could understand and be entertained by. I could see the farm, visualise its buildings and the views, and feel the discomfort of working with scythes in the middle of a summer heatwave.

Best of all though, I think, is the portrayal of Kay and her team. It’s here that I have to make another highly complimentary comparison to Angela Marsons because here, too, are strong individual characters that not only share the same dedication to their work, but also share camaraderie as they bounce ideas off each other. Meeting them for the first time in the fifteenth novel of the series probably isn’t ideal – although I had no difficulty reading the book as a stand-alone – but I can sense that if you’ve followed them from the first instalment, it could feel a bit like welcoming old friends back into your life.

If I have a criticism, it’s that I saw the solution – or should that be solutions – coming before they were revealed. Though I do have to admit that this was at least in part down to elimination, as the police team encountered one dead end after another. However, I really didn’t mind that here because, in its own little way, it made the book feel a bit more authentic. There must be a lot of real life police cases where the detectives know who the culprits are before they’ve found the evidence to prove it.

I mentioned that What Evil Hides is the fifteenth instalment in this series of novels featuring DI Kay Hunter. From Rachel Amplhett’s website, I note that she’s also written a further three series featuring different lead characters as well as six stand-alone thrillers. So quite how her books have somehow passed me by until now is something that’s beyond me to explain.

I’ll definitely be going back and reading some more of them now, though. Even if I do have to invent time travel, or immortality first.

My thanks to Zooloo’s Book Tours for my inclusion on the blog tour for this book, which will be published in the UK on 9th February by Saxon Publishing. My review is also available on my blog at www.mycosybooknook.wordpress.com, published on Amazon and shared on my social media pages.

Well, I'm back with my sixth read by this author and, of course, you'll know by now, that I absolutely love this genre and this author's writing style which just grabs me in from the start.

You'll maybe remember that my reads span a couple of the different series' that this author has written and they are coming out so fast that I can only keep up with the new releases - so yes, yet again, I haven't caught up yet...but am here with book 15 in the Detective Kay Hunter series.

Having read books 13 and 14 over the past year or so, I knew that I'd be able to just settle straight back into this world and follow Kay and the team on yet another tricky investigation.....and boy was this one hard work.

When a badly mutilated body is found at a local hop field, the team struggle to not only work out who the victim was, but also to find any clues to who might have done this and why.

This was a really complex case and it was great to see the team coming together and working hard to find something that would give them that first lead.

As the tragic story unfolds I couldn't help but feel for all involved.

It was great to follow the case but also I really enjoyed seeing the personal aspects of life for Kay and the team.

This book sees the team struggling with staffing numbers as a valued and experienced member takes early retirement (with others hinted at).

This rings true with what we are seeing in our own areas today, with less and less funding and less police presence.

I'm really loving this series and really would like to catch up one day, but I think I'll be happy for now to just keep on top of these new releases and am looking forward to seeing what awaits Kay in the next book.

There’s a new case for DI Kay Hunter from Maidstone police station in Kent and her team, including DS Ian Barnes, DCs Gavin Piper, Kyle Walker and Laura Hanway and DC Debbie West. An unidentified man has been discovered by workers in a hop garden on a farm, tortured, disembowelled and strung high up on the bines’ trellis wires. This was clearly a very carefully planned murder and it would have taken at least three people to commit this brutal and shocking crime. There are plenty of suspects to be looked at, including full time and temporary workers, and also the many visitors coming for the organised tours of the farm. There also appears to be some disharmony between the two generations of farmers there and maybe even some ex-workers with an axe to grind. The post mortem reveals some strange ritualistic markings on the poor man’s body but the detectives find themselves still with no clear motive, no definite suspect and they have not even been able to identify their victim. Why did the man have to die or was the thriving business the real target? Worried that the killers may have done this before or will go on to do it again, the pressure is really on to solve this most baffling and bizarre case.
This was a smashing addition to a very solid police procedural series which still works perfectly well as a stand-alone. It has a complex and clever plot and features a great bunch of very likeable officers who all work efficiently as a team as they doggedly plough through the deluge of interviews to try make sense of the little evidence in front of them. There are lots of twists and surprises in this well told murder mystery, and the pace is well kept up throughout as the investigation turns into a dark and very chilling one. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I normally listen to an audiobook as I get ready for work, progressing through it bit by bit. With What Evil Hides though, I found myself switching off music or podcasts so I could return to find out what new evidence Detective Kay Hunter and her team had uncovered in their quest to solve their grisly murder case.

I struggle with gore in books, so I appreciated that there were some brief, factual descriptions of how their victim was killed rather than any first person experiences. I mean, I know I have organs inside my body but I’m happy not knowing what they look like!

I enjoyed the interactions between Kay and her team, struggling with workload pressures amidst staffing issues. And the footwork and frustration of tracking potential offenders and witnesses down, who send the team down blind alleys to protect their own interests, made it feel more realistic. Having grown up in the countryside, the agricultural elements and challenges were a welcome setting.

In my opinion, a narrator can make or break someone’s enjoyment of an audiobook, and their opinion of the novel itself. Alison Campbell brings a soothing voice to the narrative, injecting plenty of excitement though as the investigation twists and turns its way towards the end.

Although this is book 15 in the Detective Kay Hunter series, I enjoyed it as a standalone without any issues. It’s out on Monday 9th February and I’d recommend it to fans of Peter James, Angela Marsons and Alex Walters. It’s ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for me!

👤 Silence grows secrets 👤

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“Some secrets don’t rot. They root themselves deeper.”

A body in a Kentish hop field is such a deliciously bleak place to begin; What Evil Hides wastes no time sinking its roots into the soil of secrecy. Rachel Amphlett knows exactly how to work atmosphere, and Alison Campbell's narration ramps up the tension: the countryside here isn’t quaint, it’s complicit—tight-lipped, watchful, and heavy with things left unsaid.

Detective Kay Hunter is on familiar ground, but this case feels weightier, and more tangled. The investigation unfolds in layers of half-truths and evasions, with the farming community’s silence proving as obstructive as any red herring. The pacing is brisk, the twists well-judged, and the pressure—from media, superiors, and the past itself—never lets up.

Verdict:
A confident, quietly menacing crime novel that thrives on what isn’t said. Dark, twisty, and grounded in a setting that feels as dangerous as the killer. A solid, gripping four stars.

Review based on the audiobook version.

This was probably my third or fourth read in this series, and entirely lived up to my expectations for this author and for Kay Hunter and her team. As police procedurals go, this series always hits the spot for the detailed behind-the-scenes investigative steps that I enjoy. I felt a little frustrated with the team for going down some obvious dead ends in this case, and the truth behind the murder was pretty sad, but if you're looking for a straightforward "police investigate thoroughly and eventually find the bad guy" book, "What Evil Hides" will do the trick!

As for the narration, I thought it was well done, especially given how many characters narrator Alison Campbell needed to voice.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Dreamscape Select for the ALC in exchange for an honest review!

I really enjoyed this book! This is the first book I’ve read by this author and I definitely plan on reading more. I’ve already bought the first five books so I can start the series from the beginning.

The style of writing plays out like you’re solving the case right along with the detectives. You get the information at the same time as the police. The characters are well developed and you get to know enough about them but don’t get overly attached to any one particular character. I also appreciated the small amount of cussing and blood and guts. I love murder mysteries but just can’t get into books that are full of cussing. There’s so many better descriptive words to use.

Another good read from Rachel Amphlett.

Her books are always fast paced and full of intrigue.

This one was focused on a farm where a body is found and suspicion is cast among the locals. I thoroughly enjoyed peeling back the layers to get to the conclusion of investigation.
I love the dynamics between the fellow police officers and the banter they have throughout.

The narration by Alison Campbell was perfect and set the atmosphere brought the characters to life.

Thanks to NetGalley for the ALC 🎧

You can expect a twisty murder mystery that will keep you gripped from start to finish. The plots are a cleverly woven tale with great characters written in, the team working the cases are such a great addition to these books which I think makes it’s such a great police procedural crime series.
With a complex plot that will keep you guessing book 15 can be read as a standalone but I can guarantee you will be dipping back through this excellent set of books.

Thank you @zooloosbooktours for having me on this tour

Thank you NetGalley & Dreamscape Select for the eARC of What Evil Hides.

I’ve never read a Kay Hunter Detective book until now and this makes me want to read all of the books!

What a great story, Kay Hunter and her team are top notch and reminds me of the Criminal Minds team without all the tension. The crime story was one I will never forget and had me asking “who did it?” most of the story.

I really enjoyed that reading all the previous books was not necessary.

3.5 stars

Disturbing and violent imagery, a host of characters I would like to know more about, dynamic relationships, procedural, and a rural setting. I enjoyed the mystery of it and the secretive small-townies. The FMC was a strong presence but having not read the series, she was lacking dimension and I wanted more so I will have to go back to the beginning. And this was compelling enough to make me want to do so.

This is such a charming team of detectives. Their sense of one team climbs off the pages. Though the crime attempting to be solved was tragic, the endeavors to solve it for the sake of the victim’s parents was the sweet glue holding it all together. I loved the delay of finding any leads. It kept my blood pressure just high enough! No spoilers here, just love and admiration!

I was on the ALC team for this mystery! I’m so grateful to be a part of it.

The mystery was really good. It starts with a bang and the victim is identified only much later in the book. Kay is a good supervisor, she's meticulous, she props up her team when they do well.

The one star off is for the narrator and I hated her. She's a bit too artificially expressive, I guess she needs to do that for the number of characters between the team and suspects, but it just grated on my nerves.

My first time listening to a Rachel Amphlett book! I enjoyed it! This is the 15th book in the series of Kay Hunter. But could be listened to or read on its own.

Good writing style, held my attention for the most part, but I did drift a few times. Not sure if some info given just bored me a little or the storyline was just a little slow. But still decent!

Thanks to Rachel Amphlett, Dreamscape Select and NetGalley for the ALC!

It’s crime—of course I was going to love it, and I did. 🔥
I received this as an ARC, but sadly couldn’t get to it before release day.

I didn’t even realize this was part of a series until I started reading, but honestly? I never felt lost. Even without reading the earlier books, the story still made total sense.

This one is fast-paced and super intriguing. The investigation, the crime scenes, the way everything unfolds—it kept me hooked the whole time. I devoured it.

This was a grisly crime and I really enjoyed detective Kay. Her and her team were amazing and I really enjoyed the dynamics between the characters. This was an interesting detective crime novel and I really enjoyed all the twists in the investigation. I am excited to read more books in this series.

Another fantastic installment in the Kay Hunter series! As police procedurals go, this series always hits the spot for the detailed behind-the-scenes investigative steps that I enjoy.

Thank you to the publishers, author and NetGalley for the free copy of this audio book.

This was the first in this series I've read but didn't feel like I was lost because of that. I enjoyed this and thought it was engaging and somehow managed to make all the many characters work without being confusing. I would read more in this series!

My first Kay Hunter novel and it wont be my last. I enjoyed the criminal minds vibes with the characters and the overall writing style. The audiobook listens well and the narrator is fantastic. Can't wait to listen to more Kay Hunter stories!
