A PROMISE. A MISSING MAN. A TRUTH WORTH DYING FOR. Conn Sullivan is working alongside Mary, rebuilding the homestead, when the telegram arrives.
Junior Sheffield needs help.
Conn rides to the logging boomtown of Stump Run, where he finds trouble stacked high as timber.
Junior is gone. Some say he ran. Others say he’s dead. A few whisper he’s still here but hiding.
Then a logger turns up dead in the river… and Junior becomes the prime suspect.
Conn doesn’t buy it.
To uncover the truth, he infiltrates Widowmaker Camp, the roughest logging outfit on the frontier, an isolated place ruled by fists and fear. Surrounded by violent roughnecks, shadowed by hidden enemies, and chasing secrets deeper and darker than a lodgepole forest, he faces the longest of odds.
But when Conn Sullivan makes a promise, he keeps it… or dies trying.
Conn 2 is another classic John Deacon Western with a touch of romance.
“John Deacon writes the kind of Westerns I like to read—gritty and fun with lots of heart.” — Don Bentley, New York Times Bestselling author of the Matt Drake thrillers; the Tom Clancy Jack Ryan, Jr. novels; and the Vince Flynn Mitch Rapp series
LOOKING FOR ACTION, SUSPENSE, WITH A LITTLE BIT OF ROMANCE? THIS BOOK AND SERIES HAS IT ALL
Review 3/20/26: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Conn 2 by John Deacon is a well-written and an action packed tell of a young twenty-four year old man who is determined to be there for his twin brother's widow no matter what it takes to help her rebuild her life after the brutal attack on her husband and the burning down of their home and barn by a group of ruthless thugs who were nothing but evil to the core. Conn, after his brother's death made a grave side promise to his deceased brother that he would do everything within his power to help his sister-in-law rebuild and protect her from ever experiencing those hardships again.
Mary, Conn's brother's widow, is a strong and determined woman that is a hard worker and with herself, her two younger brothers, and Conn, they start rebuilding their small farm and their lives. During their time together, Conn and Mary start developing feelings for each other that are stronger than brother-in-law and sister-in-law believing that their feelings are more to do with friendship and shared loss of Cole, Conn's twin brother and Mary's deceased husband.
During the first book while tracking down his brother's killers, Conn friended Bill Sheffield who placed his life on the line and prior to his death asked Conn to promise if anything happened to him that Conn would look out for his estranged teenage son and of course, Conn being the man he is, he up holds his promise and heads out to find out what kind of trouble Junior Sheffield has got himself into and no matter how bad it is, help Junior out of it. In doing so, Conn runs into corrupt logging camps with big ass loggers who work hard, drink hard, and fight hard just for the fun of it and to burn off steam before heading back out to put their lives on the line cutting down virgin trees and bringing them to market in the nearby logging town. If that isn't enough, Conn has to deal with corrupt city leaders.
John Deacon has a way with his writing that will draw you into the story and the characters themselves. This series is one that if you're into a series that has action from the beginning towards the last page in the final book, this book and series is for you. I can honestly recommend this book as well as all the previous books that John's written since I have read each and everyone of them including the third addition to this series 'Conn 3' and let me tell you, they are all great reads and I look forward to reading each and every new release that John puts out.
This is a continuation of Conn that we have been waiting for. It would be better if you have read that already, but there is a summary of it at the beginning of Conn 2. In the Prologue, Pete Lundy is murdered and it is pinned on Junior Sheffield. Junior is the son of Bill Sheffield, Conn's friend that died helping him to after a murderer. The story starts with a very idyllic scene, Conn helping Mary James and George rebuild their ranch. It looks like they are well on their way to a lasting relationship and Conn filed the the adjacent property to seal his desire to settle down. Then Conn gets a message from Junior that he is in serious trouble in Stump Run, a rough logging town where he sells whiskey the Widowmaker logging camp. When Conn gets there Junior is nowhere to be found and Conn decides he needs to infiltrate the logging camp to find him. Let the action begin. Action that could get him killed several times over. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Whip Bolen is a rich rancher with designs on Mary and think his kindness and generosity will win her over. Maybe it will. I am pretty sure we haven't seen the last of Whip Bolen in Conn 3. Excellent read!
I am a western fan. I like the western way of living. Easy and simple. I too grew up in country style living. I find this type book I can read and know exactly what they were talking about. Its how we all wish it could be when we say back in the good old days. I have lived in Montana nearly all my life and so many things you mentioned that were house hold items, I still have and use. Anyway, I enjoyed the read..thank you and keep on telling good stories.. MonaLu gould
John Deacon has done it again! Every book he writes just gets better and better. Definitely he has become a world-class author! Conn 2 continues the story of a rough cowboy who in his youth had a few bumps in the road but now as he matures is a righteous man who also has a tender heart for a certain beautiful woman. You’ll want to read Conn 1 first and then after finishing 2, sign up for 3.
Conn believes if you make a promise you must keep that promise. Life with his sister in law and her brothers was growing into a good life. They all worked very hard to build the house and start building the barn. Then word comes causing Conn to leave to fulfill and old promise. Little did he know of the dangers which waited for him in the logging camp he was going to in hopes of keeping his promise.
The adventures of Conn and Mary is a well put together story. I’m an avid reader of western historical fiction and start many books only to delete many of them as badly written. John deacon’s books are all realistic (bad guys get killed, not just wounded) no profanity and the good guys still win. Ready for conn3
A good story if you like reading about rough loggers.
I give this story five stars because it was an interesting story, but I'm afraid it wasn't my favorite story about Con. We know cons are really good fighter, but I don't know how he lasted against these big bruisers. I guess they'll be a con three so we can see Conan Mari maybe get married?
John Deacon continues the story of Conn and Mary. As in all his other series' this was a great western yarn with strong characters woven into a believable and engaging plot. I can't wait to read Conn 3. If you haven't discovered this author yet, you are about to uncover a gem.
I have Not read the first bookI'm sorry to say. So I missed out on a lot I wi?'ll soon rectify that. Hard to put down but I only read at night before sleep and read longer than usual. Not a lot of flash like most western where the central character can't be best whether guns knives or fists
I've read all of Deacon's series and enjoyed them all. I usually wait to the end of the last book in the series to comment. But for some reason this series doesn't stand up to the good stories in the other books. But I'll read the next book and report again, hoping the finale makes up for the first two books!!!
Block a day or two off your calendar because once you start this book, you won't be able to put it down until the last page. And be prepared to be on the edge of your seat hoping Conn can get out of situations his promises got him into.
In Conn 2, Conn's promise to help Bill Sheffield's son Junior, takes him back to Stump Run where Junior's disappeared and is wanted for murder. Meanwhile back in Fairplay, Mary and her brothers have trouble of there own.
If you like wholesome western novels with themes of faith that follow strong traditionally masculine righteous men, them you can't so much better than a John Deacon novel and this one is no exception.
The story was great! Conn gets right to the heart of matters, and makes them right. Can't wait to read the next book. I like your writing and old west history. Keep making great stories like this and you will always be remembered was a great story teller.
Written as well as expected from Mr Deacon. Each part of the story leads perfectly into the next, and usually as expected. Add in the surprises, and the story unfolds. Ready for Conn 3.
Even though we know that Mr Deacon’s main characters will come out ahead, how they do so without being rescued is what makes his novels stellar. A satisfying read.
I have enjoyed all the author's books but I think this one is his best. This book is filled with adventure and great examples of true male bravado. TBE characters clearly teach the lessons of character and values.
I old and like books about men the make a promise and do whatever it takes to keep their promise. Too bad a handshake or promise doesn’t mean anything in today’s world.
The setting of a loggers’ camp was really cool and a nice change of scenery. The plot of Conn 2 feels like a very exciting, albeit slightly confusing mystery thriller. Maybe it’s just me, but I just find the financial component of the plot hard to understand. Otherwise, this was amazing.
What a great ride. Conn takes you on another adventure. Every page turned it takes you to a deeper part and then brings you back out. I would recommend John Deacon to everyone I know. Thanks for the great ride.
John Deacon spins a great story with engaging characters that you will either love or hate. He developed a story to pull you right into it. Can't wait for Conn 3!
A romance that came out of the ashes of a tragic and sudden loss. Two identical twin brothers as different as the coolness of the winter ice vs the warmnest of the summer sun.
