Scales of the Moltherin
In a kingdom shattered by divine wrath, where magic was stolen from human hands and sealed into stones by vengeful gods, one grumpy, black-cat-energy heroine is about to be dragged into a fate she never asked for.
After a chance—and chaotic—encounter in the market, our fiercely independent FMC finds herself delivered straight into the hands of the evil king by none other than our equally grumpy, morally gray MMC. Bound together by circumstance and a volatile chemistry neither of them wants to admit, they’re forced into close quarters and a treacherous mission that could reshape the kingdom.
But this isn’t just about survival or reluctant teamwork.
It’s about a beast—a terrifying creature born of divine punishment, part panther, part serpent, known only as The Moltherin—that prowls the torn lands, guarding the balance left behind by the gods. To restore what was lost, the FMC must track down the scattered magic stones, meant to be placed along the creature’s scales, reigniting the lifeblood of the land. But doing so might destroy the fragile alliances she’s beginning to form—including the one with her maddening captor.
Does she choose rebellion and restoration, or submission to the king’s growing darkness? Every path burns. Every choice has a cost.

This an ARC review. The storyline and world building is fantastic! i absolutely love how strong and sarcastic Amina is and how she interacts with Alaric. The pacing was perfect and I kept wanting to read more even when the book was over. I definitely suggest this for anyone that likes dark romantasy but be warned to read the triggers the book has since this is for mature adults with many things, like the action, being vert descriptive which i absolutely love.

J.C. Dawn’s Scales of the Moltherin stands out as a compelling contribution to the romantasy genre, skillfully blending dark fantasy elements with intense, emotionally charged romance. The result is a narrative that manages to be both brutal and beautiful.
World-Building and Setting
The kingdom of Kryor is exceptionally well realized—a realm steeped in shadow, fear, and political tension. Dawn’s attention to detail brings the world to life with striking clarity, from the harsh realities faced by common citizens to the oppressive power structures that dominate the land. The supernatural elements are seamlessly woven into the political landscape, creating a rich, immersive setting that enhances every scene.
Characters and Dynamics
Amina is a standout protagonist: strong, sharp-witted, and delightfully sarcastic. Her dynamic with Alaric is compelling, adding depth and emotional charge to the story. Their interactions are engaging and often electric, making them one of the novel’s greatest strengths.
Pacing and Engagement
The pacing is excellent, maintaining momentum throughout the story. I found myself constantly eager to read more—so much so that I was left wanting even after reaching the final page.
Content Considerations
This novel is firmly intended for mature audiences. The action, dark themes, and emotional intensity are vividly and sometimes graphically portrayed. Readers who enjoy darker romantasy will likely appreciate this level of detail, but it’s important to review the listed content warnings before diving in.
Conclusion
Scales of the Moltherin is a richly imagined, expertly paced novel that will appeal to fans of dark romantasy seeking an immersive world, well-crafted tension, and a powerful romantic arc. Dawn’s storytelling is vivid and absorbing, making this a standout read within the genre.

I was not prepared for how attached I was going to get to this book. After tragedy left Amina alone to fend for herself a chance encounter with Alaric in the market sends her down a path she never could have seen coming. She is delivered straight into the hand of King Eran, and quickly discovers the evil the king hides behind the palace walls. After two years and an assignment gone awry her path once again shifts. Family secrets are unveiled and a new purpose is set before her. Find the stones and face the Moltherin to restore what was lost. On her journey she must learn to trust not just herself but also her companions.
I absolutely lost myself in this book. J.C. Dawn did a beautiful job building a world complex with history and lore. I am typically more of a character person but for this book the world the author built took my breath away. I really appreciated how what I learned about the world continued to build the more I read compared to just a giant lore dump. The author paced the information they gave the reader exquisitely, allowing for information to be discovered with the characters when it was relevant to the story.
I also really appreciated the attention to detail with each character. How as a reader I was given the ability to learn and know so much from them without it spoiling the story or overtaking the plot. Watching Amina specifically grow and heal was beautiful.
I absolutely loved this book and am currently patiently yet impatiently waiting for the next installment of this series. Until then if you are looking for beautifully written fantasy book with some romance in the mix, I strongly recommend this book.

I actually debated what I was going to rate this for more than 24 hours.
The pros:
The fantasy aspect of it was so fun, to the point I think if the author wrote a fantasy with no smutt I’d instantly buy it.
There were these magical stones they were searching for and these creatures that were kind of taking over. Super fun concept.
I really enjoyed the side characters and all they brought to the story overall.
I did enjoy the flash backs and felt like helped a ton with the movement of the story.
Cons:
The romance was over the top. It could have been cut in half. I didn’t need to hear him confess his love and thoughts about ending the world for her every other chapter. The smutt was fine and timed really well but looordddd, could they separate for a second.
The motherin were brought into the story, they were supposedly a HUGE problem, yet we only had one run in with them in current times. The could have been such a cool part of this story but I fear we were trying to make the romance happen to much for this to take off.
Overall I gave it 3⭐️ because I did enjoy reading it, and I would recommend it to others. I think you really have to be looking for a romantasy with a heavy romance plot - which side note is 100% ok and the author did an amazing job IMO for her debut.

I am honestly struggling to find the words to explain how incredible this book is!! One of my favorite reads of the year!!
The world that J.C. Dawn has created is incredible. Everything is so detailed and descriptive that you cannot help but picture what is happening while you are reading this book. The characters are so well developed. I was attached to our wonderful FMC Amina from the very first page! The amount of growth she experiences, the trauma she overcomes, the strength, the sarcasm, the vulnerability she shows when she let's others in... I mean I could go on about her forever. I would honestly compare her to Aelin Galathynius so to my Throne of Glass girlies... you are going to LOVE her!! Our MMC Alaric quickly made it onto my list of book boyfriends. I can not say enough about this man! Some chapters are in his POV and I am obsessed!!! I am so glad that we get to see his perspective and hear his thoughts as well!
This story is full of twists and turns and kept me on the edge of my seat. I wanted to yell at the book a few times, I cried, and felt every emotion in the book. I cannot wait for more of this story and these characters!! I need book 2 ASAP!!
In short, if you like fantasy/romantasy, YOU NEED TO READ THIS BOOK!

If you're tired of the same old romantasy and looking for something to consume your entire existence while reading...definitely pick the one up! I despised doing anything other than flip to the next page!
This book has me in its threshold even now! I was not mentally prepared for how attached I would become to these characters. Amina is a strong and independent FMC but when struck with tragedy, an encounter with Alaric brings something nobody ever could have predicted.
King Eran chooses to give her a chance to work for him and all too soon, she will realize how evil he really is.
This story really did pull me in from the start. The world is so immersive that it feels like you are experiencing it along with each character. There are some darker scenes, and I can tell you that I bawled...I felt all the pain (not physically but emotionally) that Amina and Alaric went through. There are some intense scenes in this book so be sure to read your trigger warnings.
The plot was well paced and moved so smoothly that I read this entire story in one day! I could not put it down; I was that invested. If you are looking for that next dark romantasy, I encourage you to give this one a chance. Sink your claws between the scales of the Moltherin and enjoy the ride.

LOVED EVERY SECOND!
Spice 3 out of 5 peppers
Plot
Character building
Ending is a cliffhanger
Trigger warnings (there is mention of physical and mental abuse, so be sure to check out her content warning page)
Devoured in two days and lost sleep when I had to work earlyyyyyy
You wouldn't know that this is J.C. Dawn's very first debut novel, as the way the words flow and how the story pulls together would make you believe she has written a plethora of books. The MMC....FIREEEEEE Alaric can get it any day and the FMC....Amina brings a whole new meaning to badass with a purpose and plan.
I heard about this through a friend from TikTok and was glad I picked it up. This is one of my top reads for 2025, and I now feel like a massive book slump is in my future.
The world building is fantastic, the yearning is amazing, and the spice is golden. The poetic writing style will have you feeling all the things as you laugh, grieve, and cry through every twist and turn. Not to mention there are so many tropes in this book I couldn't tell you what my favorite one is!
Ordering the physical copy for a shelf trophy!

Oh. My. God. The way this ending has me reeling because I want more is absolutely crazy!!! I swear I clung to every detail and held my breath on multiple occasions. Normally when it comes to fantasy novels I have a really hard time giving them anything above a 4 star solely because it takes a lot to capture me or to suck me into the story. But the way J.C. had the ability to capture my attention and sunk her claws into me made this even better! I haven’t been this drawn into a fantasy book since ACOTAR and The Crimson Moth series, so I would say this is definitely a book you MUST read! The character development of Amina, the mysteriousness of Alaric, and the magical realm that we get to watch unravel is just chefs kiss! 🤌💋
If you’re looking for a darker feeling fantasy with so many twists and turns you might fear of becoming whip lashed then this is definitely the novel for you. Also just a side note the ending is diabolical and J.C. has already been made aware of my feelings 😂 love you girl!
Favorite Moment:
“I don’t need to scream to be heard anymore.” My eyes hold his, “I didn’t just survive—I’m what came after.”

A fierce FMC and Assassin..
Just finished this book, and I have thoughts…
The FMC absolutely stole the show for me. She’s fierce, a true badass assassin, and everything she endured at the hands of a greedy king was brutal, but what I loved most is that it never broke her. Her strength and resilience carried this story.
The MMC… I have mixed feelings. I liked him, but I was definitely frustrated. Putting her directly in the king’s line of sight? Yeah… he deserved every bit of that beating she gave him.
The storyline itself kept me engaged, and while the spice was well-written, it didn’t always feel necessary to the plot. I found myself more invested in the tension, the revenge, and the emotional stakes.
Speaking of revenge…
The final confrontation with the king felt a little underwhelming compared to everything he put her through. I wanted more from that moment.
That said, the ending pulled me right back in. It left me intrigued and definitely curious about what’s coming next.
Overall, a strong read with a powerful FMC, and I’ll absolutely be picking up the next book. 🖤📖

I had the absolute pleasure of ARC reading this book for JC, and can I say, pleasure it was. This woman knows how to effortlessly create an epic fantasy world and complex characters within. I fell in love with her FMC Amina almost instantly, able to relate to her struggles and fierce loyalty. Alaric our FMC is a brooding, hot, sexy, melt at the sight of him kinda man. Then we have our side character golden retriever Leon, cousin to Amina, ooohh my lawd that man.
‘“Hello comrades.” His voice perks up just in time, “You got any ladies around here, or is it just a bunch of dicks?”’
I fell instantly here. I’m so excited to see him in book 2! (It’s not often I love a side character more then the MMC)
The plot of scales of the moltherin had me captivated, entranced, enthralled and on the edge of my seat the entire time. I devoured it in only a few hours. If you’re looking for a fantasy romance with some spice and incredible world building, this is it.
This is going to be a New York Times Best Seller. Pick it up, now!!!!!!!

🌶️.5
Wow! This book was incredible! We follow our FMC, Amina, an orphan who is taken to the King of Kryor by the King’s first blade and our MMC, Alaric, after he finds her clashing with a merchant at the market. Once there, the King forces Amina to serve as one of his blades; however, he is not kind towards her and she is forced to endure severe suffering at his hands. As the story progresses, we learn key details about Amina, her parents, and Alaric that set prophecy into motion. The plot in this one was thick and extremely well developed. The romantic tension between Amina and Alaric was thick and full of groveling, with our MCs going from rivals to lovers in a slow burn of epic proportions. The side characters in this one were witty and added to the story. Amina also has a sassy raven sidekick that was adorable. I can’t wait to see where the story goes from here in the second book of the duology! I would highly recommend this one, but please check TWs if needed, as this one is dark!

5 Stars — Dark, addictive, and absolutely unforgettable.
Scales of the Moltherin pulled me in from page one and refused to let go. This story is beautifully brutal in all the best ways — filled with danger, magic, betrayal, and a heroine who earns every ounce of her strength.
Amina is everything I love in a dark romantasy lead: fierce, traumatised, stubborn and impossible not to root for. Her voice is sharp, emotional, and deeply human. I felt every wound, every memory, every moment of survival right alongside her.
The world building is rich, layered, and alive with secrets — between the Moltherin lore, the tension with the gods, the Healers, and the king’s harsh rule, there’s always something pulling you deeper.
And the king? Let’s just say morally grey perfection, dangerous enough to fear and fascinating enough to obsess over. Definitely a new book boyfriend unlocked.
With gorgeous writing, vivid action, and a world that wraps around you like shadow and fire, this book delivers everything a dark romantasy should. I loved it.

I want to start off by saying I’m usually an earhole reader, but when I got the opportunity to ARC read this baby before its release, I jumped on it and I’m so glad I did. The story was captivating from the very beginning. I loved the world building because it was well paced, well done and easy to follow and comprehend. The character development throughout the book was amazing. The FMC is just a badass and I wanna be her when I grow up. Her strength, both mentally and physically, were so admirable. She’s a queen in my book. As soon as the MMC stepped onto the scene I knew I’d love him (and wanna wring his neck in equal measure). There were so many moments in this book that made me giggle because of the back and forth with the MCs.
JC’s writing style is amazing. I love Dark Romantasy, but it can sometimes be so arduous to read. Scales of the Moltherin is not like that. It was a fun and easy read while still being deeply inspirational and gripping. It DEFINITELY left me wanting book two like NOW! 🤣 I’m trying to write this without spoilers. Just know it was an amazing story by a very talented person. If dark romantasy with a sassy FMC and hottie MMC is your vibe, you don’t want to skip out on this one. LOVED!!!!

I usually enjoy a good assassin romantasy, but they’re not typically at the top of my list. However, I’m so glad I decided to read this book! JC’s writing is phenomenal. She has a way of fully immersing you into the world and making you feel connected to the characters she’s created.
Amina is an absolute badass with top-tier sass. Watching her growth and understanding of the life she was given was incredibly rewarding and well done.
Alaric is hands down my favorite. The way he allows Amina to step into her role without placing the weight of the world on her shoulders is so admirable. His love and support for her are unmatched… if Amina asked to burn the world down, he’d hand her the match.
I truly enjoyed the dual POV and cannot wait for book two! Thank you for the opportunity to ARC read this book.

Scales of the Moltherin was my first dip into romantasy, and I couldn’t have asked for a better introduction. J.C. Dawn crafted a story that’s easy to fall into. The pacing stays steady, the world feels lived‑in, and the characters are genuinely well thought out. I connected with the FMC almost immediately; her voice, her choices, and the way she moves through the story all felt natural and grounded.
The plot builds in a way that keeps you invested without ever dragging, and every emotional beat lands right where it should. And that cliffhanger? Perfectly executed. It hit with just the right amount of shock and anticipation without feeling cheap or rushed.
For a debut, this is incredibly solid. I’m fully locked in and already excited for Book 2 in this duology. A definite 5‑star read for me.

I was lucky enough to be trusted as a Beta reader for this incredible story. With that being said. Amazing! 👏🏼 Amina is a total badass FMC we loved to relate to especially in trying times in our lives. Alaric the MMC/love interest (has a splendid dirty mouth if you catch my drift) is very thing you want in a book boyfriend. He knows Amina is a strong woman and doesn’t need him, he is just along for the journey to help when needed. It has a found family you will absolutely love with amazing side characters you can’t help but love. A new world to explores and magic system to discover. A terrible, and I mean terrible King that you prayer for his take down!! & you will get whiplash from all the plot twist thrown your way! All in all I absolutely loved this story!!!

Well done.
What an excellent start to this duet! It draws you into the fantasy, which is excellent, and the romance is steamy. I fell in love with Amina and Alaric. Immediately, the first time Alaric appeared on the page. I was like, "Oh. Yeah, that's what we're doing. I see it, I see the vision." I actually really enjoyed the cliffhanger at the end of this. I do love cliffy, though. Personally, I thought it was really well done and put together, and I will say that one of my favorite quotes in the entire book is probably, "You are not what was done to you." Because I think most of us need to hear that sometimes, so five stars well done, and I can not wait for the second book.
I loved it , I’m pissed it’s over!
I was an ARC reader do this novel, it is an assassin fantasy with mild spice read. I found myself getting agitated when I had to put the book down. 🤣 I literally looked at my spouse & kiddos with such annoyance. It flowed very well, it has an evil villain you will hate, an FMC & MMC you will love to root for, and a crow that brings laughter to perfect moments. I cannot wait for the next book as this book does end on a cliff hanger be prepared to be waiting in agony with me 😂😩.
I feel this book is in similar to my ACOTAR obsession and will leave you wanting more.

This book was beyond good. It takes forced proximity to another level. The characters in the book are so well developed and thought out. When you first start the read you think you know what's going on and then twist happens. The story lines become different and what you thought you knew, wasn't really it. The characters make you fall in love with them from the first pages of the book. The author made them feel relatable. The main FMC allows you to feel all her pain, gains and wins that you can feel her story coming to life. This book is an amazing dark romance fantasy. Pick it up and give it a shot because I promise you'll love every word from the book from the minute you start.

Captivating. Heartbreaking. Poetic.
An absolutely MUST read for lovers of dark fantasy. Looking for a book boyfriend you will swoon for? Yep. This book, right here.
Definitely take your time with this one, read your triggers, but ohhh enjoy the beauty and the RAGE you will feel for a certain king.
J.C.s writing is top tier. Emotional damage. Heartache and pain. Angst and connection... you will experience so many emotions in this book.
There is one specific chapter, one scene that will RIP your heart out of your chest. oof!
The ending... dont say I didn't warn you, but you'll be stalking JCs page like... so when is book 2 coming out?
Incredible. Top tier. Cant say enough good things about it.

Goodness where do I even start. I enjoyed this book so much. The world building was well written, without any large clumps of info dumping on us. There were some aspected that we learned alongside the FMC. I love the enemies to lovers slow burn in it. I was so hooked on it. The ending has me dying waiting for book 2! I became so attached to the characters and the animals. JC really did a great job with this debut novel. The writing style was fantastic, the riddles were well thought out - not clearly obvious but not unsolvable.
I truly enjoyed this book so much. I am planning to reread it when book 2 comes out just to relive the emotional turmoil.

The story kicks off with one intense encounter, and then it just rolls from there.
Amina is not only tough as hell, shes smart.
Alaric makes the top 10 list for best book boyfriend.
The King is the one of the worst villians ive come across, (and he makes it good. you hate him from his first appearance to the very end).
I wish we had gotten more of the creatures themselves, I havent been horrified by a monster description since "Maze Runner".
and that last encounter 🤔
Tell me more about the Queen!
There better be a book 2 soon, that ending was not fair.
*loved it is the overall vibe

To say I'm obsessed and need the next book like I need air is an understatement. I absolutely loved this book. This author has a way with words; there are so many thought-provoking and profound excerpts in this. The way she describes how it feels to go through severe trauma, PTSD, and anxiety from such is spot on.
Chapter 36 should be considered a hate crime against readers. Excuse me ma'am, I'll need a warning before you decide to rip my heart out and stomp on it. I cannot wait to get my hands on the next book!

Absolutely amazing storytelling!
I have NEVER enjoyed a fantasy book as much as this one! J. C. Dawn, you made me feel like I was riding on horses, battling guards, facing my own inner struggles as well as outer - but never alone! I felt every ounce of hate, fear, confusion, and love with the character Amina. I cannot say enough praise for this book. You dear J.C., were meant to be a storyteller. Thank you for the opportunity to read this book. I am most definitely looking toward the release of the second book.

Dark, gripping, and impossible to put down.
Scales of the Moltherin is a fast, intense, and beautifully written dark romantasy. Amina is a fierce, flawed heroine you root for instantly, and the world is rich with danger, magic, and secrets.
The action is sharp, the emotions hit hard, and the king… let’s just say he’s a dangerously perfect new book boyfriend.
If you love dark fantasy with edge, heart, and high stakes, this one is absolutely worth reading.

I can’t say enough!
I loved this book! Wasn’t too sure about it at first but it quickly drew me in. It has twists & turns around every corner. Badass FMC. Broody grumpy MMC. Perfect mix of story, sarcasm, & spice! I don’t think I’ve ever hated a villain so much in a book. J.C. character building is top tear. The world building was amazing. I just can’t say enough! The whole book was amazing! And now I need my own Vesper!

Easily a 6 ⭐️ read for me. I have no other words than to say that I need book 2 like yesterday.
I got sucked in and it kept me in a chokehold. The banter is great, the plot is great, and that cliffhanger hurts. But I know I’ll be back for book 2.
The FMC is strong and I love her to pieces. The MMC is a pro in yearning and I love it!
Not everything is quite as it seems and I’m still reeling from this book.

The was dark, gripping and completely addictive. It pulled me in with its rich world-building, Morally gray characters, and intense enemies-to-lovers tension. Amina is a fierce, sharp-tongued heroine you can't help but root for, and the chemistry between her and Alaric is electric. Be warned-the twists and that ending will leave you desperate for the next book. Perfect for fans of dark romantasy who love danger, magic, and a romance that burns slow and hot.

Fantastic read!
It's dark, fast paced, it's beautiful and the vibes are incredible.
J C Dawn sets the world brilliantly and writes her characters so well that you fall in love with Amina and Alaric and Leon and Kyzer and the others (spoilers) so so quickly!
I love the absolute POETRY this woman writes into this book. LITERALLY and figuratively also.
The prologue alone had me immediately locked in and wondering what was going to happen!
Amina isn't your teenage assassin either! She's 31 by my maths! Woooh!
Some of the twists in this book were genuinely a 'excuse me what!?' kind of moment and I was up TOO LATE reading it because of them!
Oh and be prepared to HATE the king with a loathing no other villain will give you!
"If this comes back to bite me in the ass, I'm going to haunt you" will stick in my mind forever, I'm certain of it. 😁

This book was absolutely amazing! I felt so drawn to the story and the characters that I never wanted to put it down. This book is hands down my new favorite. JC Dawn really has a way of pulling you into the story and allowing you to feel with/for each character. For me this book was a roller coaster of emotion and an awakening. Through all trauma and heart bring love and light, and she captured that beautifully!
