After a near-fatal twist of fate, chronic loser Tony Gosse becomes the unlikely biographer and protégé of an aging Mafia chieftain. Their relationship will transform Gosse as he endures many adventures while leading an extraordinary life.
This book surprised me by its layers of depth. I thought Mark Massé's fourth novel would be a funny book about what happens when you don’t yell ‘FORE!’ in time and bean a Mafia figure. I thought it would be something like Lawrence Shames’s Key West series, and that IS how it starts.
However, just as Vivian in Pretty Woman changes by spending time with Edward Lewis, Shank’s Tony Gosse transforms from a hapless loser as he shadows a Mafia figure who assigns homework: The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius.
As Gosse faces soul-killing adversity and life-threatening danger, the boy who was bullied has become a man willing to risk his life to save the most vulnerable.
