“This is a FANTASTIC sports romance. The characters are well written, the plot makes sense, it’s funny and clever with incredible metaphors.”
“An actual sports romance—done well—is so rare to find, and this one is executed to perfection. I don’t know a thing about figure skating, but the story makes it accessible and engaging without being dumbed down. Not to mention I saw myself reflected in so many moments that it became an almost overwhelming experience.”
Clarity Jansky has been ice dancing the past 17 years, and she has the perfect plan to finally reach the Olympic trials… until her partner falls and lands on the other side of a season-ending injury. With only seventy-two hours until team edits close, she’s forced to turn to the last person she ever wanted to skate with:
Jason Forbes. Her brother’s best friend. Her first love, and the first heart she had to break.
After a reckless mistake ends Jason’s hockey career, everything gets stripped away; his team, his future, and his father’s approval. When the opportunity arises to return to the ice with Clarity, he agrees in hopes of reclaiming a piece of himself. Even if it means digging up the heartbreak he was planning on keeping buried forever.
They only have months to rebuild trust and prove everyone who’s watching wrong; she can win with an inexperienced partner, and he’s worthy of putting skates back on. Although the closer they get to the podium, the harder it becomes to keep their past behind them and their growing connection off the ice. But skating the line between ambition and emotion might cost them more than their lost shot at redemption.

I genuinely loved this book so much! Especially the writing style of the author I could go on and on about how many times her writing made me giggle and the fact that it was so relatable!
The characters were well done and relatable especially the side characters! I need a separate book for Cole🤭
I loved reading the comments in the book, the way they were so real and it was exactly how people behave on online platforms (which isn’t usually the best😭) I loved the representation of eating disorders and the actions taken to fix it (the scribbling out labels was just 🥹)
The only thing i didn’t like was that Jason kind of cheated on Tiffany..no matter how much he didn’t want to be with her, he should not have kissed Clarity while in a relationship with Tiffany. Otherwise i loved all the characters (even Jason and Tiffany) I think one of my favourite moments was the conversation between Clarity and Tiffany! (iykyk😙)
An adorable read overall and I would definitely recommend reading it for a light sports YA romance!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Wow. What a powerful and impactful book. I read it as an ARC read. Jason is Clarity’s brother’s best friend who used to be a hockey player. Clarity is a figure skater working towards a dream. Sadly, that dream gets derailed and it takes a lot to get back up. Clarity and Jason fight their attraction throughout the book and learn how to work together. Will she reach her dream?
I really enjoyed working through this book and reading through Clarity’s demons and inner monologue. I’m sure the stress of any athletes can match this. This book is a young adult book.
I don't normally enjoy stories set in high school, but this one is an exception. Isabelle's writing pulled me in from the start and I fell in love with the characters. She wrote about some pretty deep topics and handled them well. I love a story where the main couple has to lift each other up and face hard things together and that's exactly what happened with Clarity and Jason.
I'm excited to see what else Isabelle Martens comes out with in the future.
I was provided an ARC of Skating the Line by Isabelle Martens, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you for allowing me to read! 5 stars! It's a cute, silly slow-burn YA romance with adorable MCs that have my whole heart. While reading, I constantly wanted to protect Clarity and Jason. The poor things!
One thing that I loved was the ED representation in regard to Clarity. It really did well to show some of the unrealistic standards that many athletes are held to. Especially in sports similar to figure skating in nature! I felt for Clarity!
The entire time I was reading, I was so invested! The story and the writing sucked me in fully. If I'm being honest, in many ways, it sort of reminded me of an YA Icebreaker. This book is one I would recommend!
⁀➷ everyone get ready for a LONG review of basically just me gushing about this book!!
♡ clarity jansky (fmc):
THIS FMC!! HER CHARACTER ARC!! HER EMOTIONS!! HER STRUGLLES!! Clarity is such a sweet soul and her emotions are depicted so well. she is determined but kind and the way she grows throughout this book is a beautiful thing to watch. clarity is definitely a character you will root for the entire book!
♡ jason forbes (mmc):
WHEN I tell you this man yearns. i mean he yearns. the little things he does for clarity, the little things he remembers...i am obsessed with this man. but outside of lovig clarity, jason is a hardworking, genuine man. he is a romantic with raw emotions that i loved reading about. jason has genuinely raised my standards.
⁀➷ overall thoughts:
i CANNOT EXPRESS TO YOU how EMOTIONALLY RAW this book is and how it will tug at your heartstrings. i was so invested in ALL of the characters (if cole and/or anabelle get a book in the future i need it) and loved the group banter and found family.
clarity and jason… your honour, i love them SO MUCH. the epilgoue!?! i started to tear up 😭 they are EVERYTHING!! the little things jason does for clarity is so so so heartwarming to see!!
🫶 anyway PLEASE READ THIS BOOK. 02/06/26 - MARK YOUR CALENDERS ‼️
this book was everything i wanted and more. the characters were so easy to fall in love with. the pacing was perfect. i absolutely loved the time jumps!! i was initially nervous because high school romances aren’t generally my thing but this book is written so well it didn’t even phase me.
This is a YA sports romance. We follow Clarity through her senior year of ice dancing while she's being scouted for the olympics, running a blog, and dealing with an eating disorder. Her and her partner (Victor) are perfectly matched and set to win nationals and sweep the season. (I promise this next part isn't a spoiler, it's on the blurb and in the first chapter.) Except Clarity kinda blacks out from lack of food and injures Victor, ending his skating career. Victor, the amazing person and good friend that he is (also my favorite character who was done dirty here, he deserves better friends) comes up with a plan to keep Clarity in the competition. Which is the setup for the romance with Jason, a former hockey player.
There are some real highs in this book which are the opening chapters and the ending. The middle is… a little… not as good, but also not bad.
There are some trigger warnings. I'd like to start with the one in chapter 1. This is a medical emergency involving blood. It's actually a really good scene, but I have a PSA: CALL 911 GET, AN AMBULANCE!!! Here Victor is injured and has to go to the hospital. Sure, the car is nearby and maybe they could get to the ER faster than an ambulance, but what don't you have to do when going in an ambulance that you do when going through the front door? Fill out paperwork before getting treated. (This takes place in America.) My suspension of disbelief was killed here as within 20 minutes (I think that's how long it took Jason to arrive) Victor had already been stitched up, xrayed, seen by a doctor, and put in a room. That is hilarious. ERs don't care if a 12 year old has an amputated finger. You have to fill out the paperwork and still wait four hours before the wound is even cleaned. So please, call an ambulance.
With that out of the way let's talk about what I liked. Friend dynamics. So often in a romance you only get the FMC and MMC, maybe a sidekick. And there's almost never healthy friendships between guys. This is full of amazing and realistic friendships. The whole cast of side characters are great! The hockey team behaves like a team. The friends are involved in the main characters’ lives. It's real and well done.
**From here on is less positive and has spoilers!!!**
Now some issues. In a romance you're supposed to be able to root for the couple to get together. For this they should be 1. likeable and 2. single. The accident on the ice is 95% Clarity's fault. Credit where credit is due, while Victor is bleeding out, Clarity is focused on helping him. The second there's nothing more she can do she starts focusing on herself. What this will do to her career. What she's going to do for the rest of the season. She doesn't give a second thought to the person she calls her best friend. At this point it isn't even clear that he'll live! That doesn't make for a likeable FMC. And since this happens in chapter 1… it's an uphill battle to like her. Then there's Jason. He's dating somebody else. Totally in love with Clarity, but in a relationship with another girl. I cannot root for a couple where one of them is dating someone else. He does acknowledge he should have broken up with Tiffany, but didn't.
The first trigger warning mentioned in the beginning of the book is: “This book contains detailed portrayal of an eating disorder, including restrictive eating behaviors, purging, and negative body image thoughts.” I'm not squeamish. I've gutted deer and tanned leather (if you don't know what that smells like then good for you, I don't recommend putting it by the front door). So I wasn't expecting to be affected by this. But the author does a really good job of making you understand why Clarity does what she does and it hurts. The first half to three quarters really hammer home how this disrupts her life. It's why she injured Victor and she keeps seeing spots and even blacks out. It's a major plot point. Until it isn't. After her injury the doctor sends her to a therapist and that's the end of that. It's no longer convenient to the plot for her to have a problem, so it's magically fixed. How her recovery was handled was a disappointment because her problem was such a major thing in the beginning.
And the last trigger warning: “We are also dealing with teenagers, so there are a few moments of strong cursing and complicated relationship choices.” A few moments? LOL. There is sooo much swearing, both printed on page and summarized, along with many middle fingers. Complicated relationships=cheating. Nothing explicit here, only implied.
The stereotypes are strong with this one. When you think of male figure skaters what's the stereotype that comes to mind? While there are no solid statistics, the estimate is that 20-40% of male figure skaters are gay. There are two in this book. 100% of them are gay.
First of all thank you so much Isabelle for this ARC!
Oh my god. Isabelle I have NO idea what you put in this book but I was ADDICTED from the start.
Let’s start with the plot. If you’re looking for a REAL hockey/skating book this is the one. The sport is the real plot and not the subplot. This goes through what hockey and ice skating actually is then leaving us with the basic knowledge. I love how she did her research and made it feel like we could actually learn about skating just through a romance book!
JASON- he has easily become one of my FAVORITE characters. The yearning for CJ is astonishing. He is absolutely too good for this world and deserves so much. The commitment he has towards clarity and skating is too much to handle. Throughout this entire book I couldn’t pin on the fact that even while juggling work, school, and friends he without a doubt would drop EVERYTHING for her.
CLARITY- oh my baby I knew I would love her from the start. I could see myself in her through the entire book. She struggles so much and the bare thought that she had been going through all of this from a young age alone is gut wrenching. I did in fact cry while reading the flashbacks and her pov’s.
SIDE CHARACTERS- Cole, Annabelle, and Victor are the IT friends. Cole and Clarity’s sibling bond is so wholesome. I’m really glad they are the kind of twins that get along and not argue 24/7 like most bonds. Annabelle is my FAVORITE character ever! Her whole “break her and you’ll die” will clarity is adorable! She’s like the sister she never had. I really hope we see more of her in future books. Victor made me laugh countless times in this book. Being the light going, hardworking person he is really tired the story together.
-SLIGHT SPOILERS-
Tiffany, Sterling, And Juliette- okay so I have iffy vibes about Juliette. I knew she was behind the comments, dress, and rumors the entire time but that didn’t change the fact that she was two faced to clarity throughout the book. I really wanted to like her even after the apology but I truly think she’s in the wrong and that no apology and fix what she did. Tiffany once again did not like her from the start and that will not change. Sterling. I don’t think I need to say anything else. Horrible boyfriend. Horrible “friend”. And an even more horrible person!
This book has earned a very special place in my heart and I can’t wait for others to be able to read it!
( Also I will never be able to look at a dress the same.) This book is YA but Jason is NOT
“Non veto l’ora di toglierti questo vestito stasera.”- Jason
✨childhood friends to lovers ✨slow burn ✨they both fall hard ✨”it’s always been you” ✨figure dancing
Personal favorite quotes-
“You will rise. You will find love, strength, and light in the most unexpected places. You will be more than your mistakes. You will be more than the noise”
“If I slow down now, I’m afraid that I’ll never be able to get back up to speed again. I can do this by myself for one night”
“do what I’ve been doing all week: sit and stay out of the way until someone needs me”
This book is amazing. I don’t say that because I love sports romance ok? I say that because it’s realistic, it’s structured and researched. The sport aspect is really good and i’ll even say the best aspect of this book in my opinion!
Let’s talk about the plot first. As unrealistic the premise sounded at first, the execution was great : the characters are struggling, we see flaws and they rely on other characters. The dynamics between family, friends and lovers are well balanced and deep! I love that our side characters are detailed enough that we know them. Their depth is good enough that we care but they still don’t take the light from our main characters. It’s not just a story about the FMC and the MMC.
THE MAIN CHARACTERS LADIES AND GENTLEMEN!!! I am obsessed! Jason first, he’s so sweet and caring and him learning how to skate makes it so much easier as a reader to follow specific vocabulary and scenes! Now Clarity…. when I beta read Skating the Line, I liked her and liked her complexity but I did not connect with her that much. NOW ???? She’s amazing. She’s flawed and yet so real, I feel like i personally know her. Clarity ? Oh yeah, she’s my personal FRIEND.
****SPOILERS IN THIS PART****
In full honesty tho? The romance was not my favorite part (I do think it’s because the sport aspect is so good that I was more loving the sport’s scenes than the romantic ones) I love Clarity and Jason together, but I loved the flashbacks’ dynamic better than the present one, I couldn’t feel the tension from Clarity’s pov as much as her past povs or Jason povs. I also don’t like the cheating device. at all. I think some part of the resolution could have been done with a better communication rather than that.
Apart from this I really loved reading Skating the Line, I devoured it and as a sport’s story? INSANE.
On that everyone, I will just say… Read it ! Enjoy it! LOVE IT !
Skating the Line by Isabelle Martens 4.5 out of 5 stars (rounded up for Goodreads) ARC
Thank you Isabelle for an early copy. All parts of this review are of my honest opinion 💚
Skating the Line is a YA sports romance where Jason, an ex hockey player, decides to figure skate with Clarity after her partner is injured. As someone who knows nothing about figure skating besides what I saw in the movies Ice Princess and Blade of Glory, I feel like I can say this next line. Even if you know absolutely nothing about figure skating, you will have no issue understanding the content. The writing and descriptions are so well done that you can understand and visualize how they are moving without making you feel out of place.
I also want to mention another aspect. Firstly, if you cannot read content where eating disorders are mentioned and actively happening, please know that this book does have this content. Your mental health comes first. Past this sentence will be the topic of ED and how it was portrayed in the book.
I would love to say thank you to Isabelle for her portrayal of ED. Eating disorders are so common about teens, dancers, and athletes, including largely in a sport like figure skating. This portrayal was so respectful and emotionally raw. We could feel what she felt, but also understand her thought process. We also got to see how all these small and big events added up and contributed to the eating disorder. The only thing I wished for was maybe a little more when it came to the recovery.
One more thing, yes, this is a book about teens. Expect some teen drama and the feeling of having to achieve everything. Also expect some language, gestures, and jokes. I'm not that far away from the teen age yet and it’s pretty accurate 😂
The premise was interesting, especially as a figure skating sports romance. Early on, I could easily picture it as a movie, which I liked. It wasn’t immediately captivating, but it did enough to keep me reading. Not a wow book for me, but not bad either.
The writing style did feel a bit childlike in places, but since this is YA, that makes sense and didn’t totally bother me. I just don’t think I was fully the target audience. BUT I would have still read it either way.
One of the stronger aspects of the book was how Clarity’s eating disorder was shown in subtle ways. The small habits, the hiding, the internal struggle, those moments felt very real. I appreciated that it was handled with care rather than being overly dramatic.
That said, I found Clarity herself a little frustrating at times. Not in a bad writing way, more in a very human way. Her interactions with Jason (our MMC) sometimes felt confusing or emotionally inconsistent. On the flip side, I absolutely loved her twin brother Cole. He ended up being one of the most interesting and grounded characters for me.
By the end, the story started to drag a bit. There were moments that felt like filler, and I found myself wishing things were tighter. I also hoped the eating disorder storyline would be explored more deeply, especially since it’s introduced as such a significant part of Clarity’s character. It felt like there was more that could have been done there.
Overall, this was a solid read with a good premise and some strong moments, especially for fans of sports romance and YA. It just didn’t fully hit the emotional depth I was hoping for.
I received this as an ARC, this review is fully my own experience and voluntary.
This sports romance that will have you in your feels. You are going to see both main characters deal with pressure from different sports and how that impacts them. Starting with the FMC, I have read a few ice skating books and while a lot of them do touch on the eating/image pressures, this book goes into it a little bit more. You will see the FMC struggling with a coach who cares more about their wins than their athletes. The negative impact doesn’t just touch the FMC, but her partners as well. Most books that have touched on it, didn’t show how it can impact the people around the athletes, so I was glad that was included. The MMC had to deal with the pressure and how he dealt with his feelings. A problem we see regularly in multiple sports is the refs ignoring calls and playing favorites. I am so sick of that being a thing, because it leads to so many unnecessary injuries. This MMC protects those he considers friends and unfortunately, he was punished because of it. His father puts the most pressure on him, while the coach is the problem for the FMC. The MMC is there for the FMC and their relationship turns into one they both need in order to deal with the negativity around them. I love that the MMC didn’t care what others said and helped the FMC instead of letting other peoples’ opinions stop him. They both fight to get past the pressure and negative aspects of their sports to build a beautiful relationship and a great ending to the story.
Thank you to the author Isabelle Martens for the early copy - all opinions are my own!
Tropes: * YA romance * High school romance * Sports romance (ice dancing) * Brother’s best friend * Best friend
Safety: A surprising amount of triggers. Includes disordered eating, medical emergencies, blood, head trauma, body shaming, body dysmorphia, mental health, bullying, cyberbullying, parental pressures, toxic parenting, and toxic authority figures.
I’m glad that the author made it clear this is YA because… oh my lord… the teenage angst and drama!
This was a story that really pulls you in. Clarity is so damaged, and the author has done an amazing job of giving the background, the thought process and the outcomes. You want to reach in and wrap her up in a hug and remind her that these people don’t matter….
It was amazingly in-depth, but, for this very reason, it moved very, very slowly and actually started to drag and feel a bit repetitive The use of flashbacks was actually frustrating - they didn’t always fit the flow.
The characters were well thought out, the sport was actually central to the story, and even without knowing anything about the sport, I found myself really enjoying those scenes. Aspects of it were a bit predictable, but it was still a very good story.
And just a personal note - I know it’s YA and all the drama, but if he truly wanted her, why would he date her enemy/bully for a year!!? The excuse he gave was weak… a couple of weeks, yes… but NOT a year!
This romance follows Clarity as she prepares for nationals while being scouted for the Olympics. The pressure is high and she needs to be at her absolute best. When something unexpected happens and she suddenly needs a new partner, enter Jason (her brother’s best friend).
Jason was once hockey’s golden boy before being kicked from the team. He’s a strong skater but very much not a figure skater and watching him learn on a tight time crunch added both tension and charm to the story.
Clarity has lived under the spotlight for a long time, and this book does a really good job of showing how that constant pressure can slowly wear someone down. It explores how expectations, scrutiny, and the need to be perfect can cause you to fracture at the edges. (There are themes around an eating disorder so please take care if that’s something that may be difficult for you.)
Emotional, intense, and grounded in the realities of elite sport, this book balances romance with some heavier themes in a way that felt thoughtful and real
Every single thing about this book was so perfect and magical and I LOVED IT!! I received Skating the Line as an arc, which I am so grateful for, so this is a completely honest review as promised!
As soon as I started reading about Clarity and Jason, their tension and yearning reminded me of every thing everybody LOVED about Belly and Conrad from TSITP! No way comparing this book to them or the characters, but the TENSION!! This book is a childhood friends to lovers and the way Jason yearns for her…. I actually can’t. Jason Forbes has found his way so easily to my top book boyfriend’s list!! 🤭
Clarity Jansky, the fmc, is a figure skating who ice dances and also does social media! I loved that aspect of her because I felt like I could relate!! She is genuinely one of the strongest romance FMC’s I’ve read about in a while and goes through so much! She has an eating disorder, which the author wrote so well, and struggles with her mental health and balancing her life with everything she does! Her character arc is amazing and like her forgiving some of the rudest people at the end, what a strong girl! because I could never… 😆 Anyways I really enjoyed her character!
Now now, Jason Forbes! He’s an ex hockey player NOW figure skater because Clarity asked him to! He is so down bad for her and let me tell you, THIS MAN YEARNS. He has loved her his entire life and it’s so obvious in his actions. He does the little things that are so important. He defends her IN EVERY WAY, online and in real life and is genuinely just the sweetest! He also gives golden retriever energy!! I LOVE THIS MAN!!
I wish I could rant about this book forever. The side characters, which I need more books on (especially Clarity’s brother Cole), the romance (wait till you guys read the love confession), the representation of mental health, and THE QUOTES!! Please please read this! I’m counting down the days until February 6th when I can get my hands on this gorgeous magical read! 🤭💕🥹
With the Olympics coming up, and ice dancing one of my favorite sports, I was very excited to read this book. When Clarity's ice dancing partner gets injured and has to sit out for the rest of the season, Jason, her brother's best friend, steps in to help. Though he was a hockey player, he steps up to the plate to help her achieve her goal. They have to build trust which means the secrets and past hurts have to come out.
Though it is categorized as Teen/Young Adult, the author handles some heavy subject matter though Clarity's inner monologue as she handles the stress and pressure of the spotlight through her ice dancing and social media presence. She handles the topics well and in a way that makes you think/care about the athletes competing. I will admit for most of the book, I thought they were in college, but nope they are handling all of this in high school. I was sucked in from the beginning and enjoyed this read.
Absolutely loved Skating the Line!! From the very first chapters, I was pulled into the world Isabelle created—one that feels immersive and emotionally real. The writing is so detailed that I could clearly visualize every part of the story, which kept me completely invested right from the start. I flew through it but still wanted to slow down and take in certain moments.
The characters feel incredibly real, and I became so attached to them—I genuinely cared about what they were going through. I also loved how the skating world was written; it added so much tension and heart without feeling overwhelming, even if you’re not familiar with the sport. The emotions felt honest and natural, and the themes of ambition, boundaries, and growth really stuck with me.
So excited to read whatever Isabelle writes next 🤍
So for anyone wanting to read a very cute and clean novel this is for you. I personally like both reading clean romance and spicy so I really enjoyed this book. A few scenes even had me flashing back to high school haha. Jason and Clarity are childhood friends but there was a growing apart portion of their lives until Clarity needs him and Jason is there in an instant. Watching them grow and understand one another again is so fulfilling because from the git go you know where Jason stands but Clarity has to go through quite a bit of growing up and changing throughout the book. I’ve also loved getting to read a figure skating book this one I believe is a first, I love hockey romances so that’s why I gave this one a try and honestly sooo good. I received this book as an advanced reader copy and I would like to thank the author for adding me to the team.
What a great book!! This author did a great job with these characters!! I laughed, I cried, I shook my hands in the air in frustration. All the feels!!! Isabelle did a great job addressing a medical issue that is common among skaters. I love that Clarity ends up skating with Jason with Victor as their coach. That is the best of both worlds!
ARC Read *** This was so cute!!! Such a good YA version of a skating romance. The brothers’s best friend trope is perfect. I enjoyed the snippets of the past to help understand the characters. Clarity and Jason are the cutest! And I think the ED was handled tastefully and truthfully. Would definitely recommend 🩷
This was a cute story …. At the end This was a strong written story. This is a really really sport book, you get a lot of it in this it’s not a part of it it’s the story. I would read triggers even if this is a YA story, the topics are real and can be tuff for some.
The writing is so good an it just flows hope for more stories in this universe
I absolutely loved this one! You cannot find a more perfect romance for Olympic season, let alone just in general! I related so much to the FMC and swooned at the chemistry between her and the MMC. Absolutely recommend this one! 100% worth the download!
Thank you so much, Isabelle, for an ARC copy! All opinions are my own.
I LOVED this book! This is a sports romance done so well, and it is so, so clear that Isabelle did her research on the ins and outs of figure skating. I do love a good sports romance, but I absolutely adore when the sport is done right. And as a skater, it warms my little heart! (I can't speak as much on the hockey portion, but as a newly avid hockey watcher, it seemed excellent to me!)
Clarity was such a lovely character to read about. She immediately grew on me from the start, and I loved seeing the inner workings of her brain. She's fun, and sensitive (in a good way!) and is so driven to do well that I was supporting her every step of the way. Some parts of the story had me wanting to hug her through the pages. I loved her so much.
And Jason. Oh, he had Conrad Fisher levels of yearning, and I ate it up! That boy was gonna do whatever he could for Clarity, and you know what? I support him! I love a man who yearns!
I loved the 'past' and 'present' writing of the book. It had me turning the pages so quickly, wanting to know what was going to happen next.
Honestly, I cannot say enough good things. This book was so great!
