The Autumn of Madam Hélène is a beautifully atmospheric historical novel that explores themes of memory, secrets, resilience, and the complicated choices people make throughout their lives. The setting and historical elements created a strong sense of time and place, and I appreciated the way the story reflected on the impact of the past and the weight of personal history.
While I enjoyed the premise and found Madam Hélène’s character intriguing, the pacing was a little slower than I expected, and I struggled at times to stay fully immersed in the narrative. Some moments felt drawn out, which made it harder for me to connect with the story as deeply as I hoped.
The audiobook narration added a thoughtful layer to the experience and helped bring the characters and emotional moments to life. Although this one wasn’t a standout read for me, I’m glad I had the chance to listen and discover this historical tale.

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for a review; it was sent prior to the publishing date, but I was unable to receive it until after.
This was an enjoyable read, though I still am not sure when exactly it was set; after the Second World War, surely, but beyond that I am not sure.
It seems to be marketed as a stand-alone book, but I suspect that other books were published that would have filled in the backstory that I found lacking, such as the background of many of the characters and how they ended up together. This did not detract so much from the story, but left me with questions that I don't know how to answer at this time.
That said, any story set in Canada is always special to me as a Canadian, and rural Nova Scotia is not the norm for setting, so it was a little gem in that sense.

I grabbed this on a whim from my libraries express shelf.
I’m not sure if this book is part of a series but I always felt like I was missing part of the story and so it made it hard to really get into it. I also wasn’t a fan of the writing style.
I did like the main character Madame Helene though and how she overcame different adversities and it made me think about judgement and whose right it is.

Some of Palma’s books precede this one. A moving novel of family love, struggles, and tough solutions.

This was an entertaining historical fiction read set in the Maritimes. I liked the setting a lot and the character of Madame Helene was an interesting lady who led a full life and ultimately met a sad end. The book tackled some heavy topics like medically assisted suicide. This was my first book by Kurt Palka and I likely wouldn't have picked it up if not for a complimentary ALC from Libro.fm but I would recommend it for fans of authors like CC Humphreys or David Adams Richards.
