I enjoyed The Bad very much. It's not the most original ghost story, but I found the setting intriguing and the characters engaging. The author almost pulled a shock event near the end, so shocking it was a "I can't believe he just did that" moment. Sadly, it didn't play out that way, and Bailey went a safer, happier route. Still an enjoyable read. 3.5 stars.

This was one of the "first reads" giveaways. I did not realize, from the short blurb, it was both a horror/paranormal novel and also self-published. The first is not a genre I particularly like. I have been "burned" by the second, and have come to the general conclusion there is a reason they are self-published. This novel was an exception. The paranormal was believable, not absurd. The violence was not gratuitous. The characters were engaging. The novel moved well, though a little slow starting. I am not disappointed I read it.

There was, however, one part that drove me nuts. The author had great difficulties with one part of the English language. [I am going to use examples not in the book, so I do not seem to mock.] Intelligent, college educated characters would say such as, "Him and me are going to the store," or, even worse, "Me and him are going to the store," rather than, "He and I are going to the store." This structure occurred many times. There also a few times where these same, intelligent people would say such as, ""Jim went to the store with Bob and I," instead of the correct, "Jim went to the store with Bob and me."

I love the English language. This use was more a horror than anything in the plot.

When fifteen year old Brennan first moves in with his new parents little does he know of the ancient horrors his presence will unleash.

The Bad by Kendall Baileyis a really good Horror/Paranormal novel that makes me think of a movie (without the whole teens-and-Ouija-boards shtick) . I loved the characters and the creepy elements are actually really creepy without being gratuitous.

Be sure to check out my video review where I gush way more on this awesome novel.

A fast flowing read… rich in its wording to carry you along as you find yourself actually looking down the hallway only to be reminded that you need to actually read the words to find out what’s really there. A truly intriguing story line for a first time writer…. I encourage anyone to grab a copy of this book and look for more to follow.
