I never really know what is happening in these books. Not only are you not meant to, because the plot twists and turns so much, but everything happens so fast, and nothing is as it seems. It's honestly quite confusing. The writing is okay, at times leaving much to be desired when it comes to dialog. The plot is fast-paced to the point of confusion. But the story is good enough that I keep reading to find out what happens next.
I was a bit surprised when book 3 ended, thinking I was at the end of the series, only to find that there were another two books in it that I didn't have! I immediately had to jump on Amazon and buy them so that I could continue the story and see what would happen to the characters that had become a part of my every waking minute the past 2 weeks!
Book 3 was another cliffhanger, and I was not about to leave things the way they were and not know what would happen next. As with the others, I immersed myself in the story, loving the fact that the first chapter actually gave me new insight to what had happened in the past that led up to the beginning of book 1. I couldn't believe how Jensen has been able to take little comments and small incidents from early in the series and create such depth to the story. I realized that many of the things that I didn't really pay all that much attention to while reading actually had much deeper, grander meanings. I was very impressed by this fact and truly see what an amazing writer Jensen is. She is a without a doubt a master storyteller and weaves a spellbinding tale with her words. Such imaginative creativity, plot twists I didn't see coming, and amazing attention to detail. Beyond impressive!
This is a series you will want to read ALL of at once. It has taken me about 2 weeks to get through all five books, the last 2 of which I had to purchase to finish the story. But with each book I was further drawn in to the story and was unable to put them down, finding myself reading late in to the night and every chance I could grab in between the busy go go go of my life.
Another must read and one that will captivate you from the start! You will want to read these books in order, though I am sure you could pick up any book in the series and find it just as captivating as a stand alone. There may be a little confusion, but overall you should be able to keep up with what is going on. But you get so much more from reading the entire series in order.
I went right into this one from the 3rd book and it doesn't miss a step. In fact if I remember correctly, it comes in on the same conversation! But what a cliff hanger and 2 weeks to wait for the 5th book to be out! I pre-ordered so I'll have is ASAP!
Desolation is part four of Tressa’s journey into Dragonlands. Or actually, not into Dragonlands. This time she is visiting a place called Desolation. Sounds charming, right? Now, this is something of a stepping-stone novel - you know the sort, the one in the middle of a series. As such, it lacks a bit of structure as a standalone story. But it is still a good book, full of action and adventure, and well written. If you’ve read this far into the series, it won’t disappoint.
So let’s dig a little deeper. What’s going on in part four of the Dragonlands series? Well, Tressa is back, along with all her friends and foes. This time though, she’s going even further out of her way to save the world. In fact, she’s going so far out of the way that she’s leaving the Dragonlands altogether. She is going to Desolation.
This book represents another solid step on the path that is the Dragonlands series, and it ratchets up the intrigue to another level. We are left at the end of book three with something of a revelation, and this new status quo is now developed in book four. It is a well developed story, being part of the wider series, and retains a consistent and solid voice. If you liked the previous books, then you will like this.
And of all the character stories in here - of which there are a few, just like in previous books - it is actually Connor’s I liked most. Connor has had a bit of a rough time of it through the series to be honest, but in book four he finally makes the journey back to the man he once was. Maybe even more. It’s great, and this sub-story is also something of a happy beacon in a world of struggles. Nice.
The other thing that stood out in this book is the journey into the shadows - you’ll know what I mean when you get there! Much like the Isle of the Keeper and other dark parts of the series, I thought that this shadowy journey was really well written, rich, and well imagined. More of this please!
Now, although this is another solid book, it does suffer slightly from a fairly common problem in series. Rather than being a great standalone book, this story represents something of a “filler” role, bringing information to the fore that is required for the final showdown. As such, the story arc doesn’t quite work for me, which adds an element of challenge to the read. In the context of the series it almost certainly works, but if you pick this up in isolation… Well, I wouldn’t recommend it.
To highlight this, the journey into Desolation itself is a good example. Although I can see the logic for the journey and that there is an outcome from this journey, it didn’t feel like it concluded. I think this is okay because book five picks up the threads and weaves them proper, but it just stuck out to me as lacking something final, and it is therefore a little unsatisfying.
The other thing that rankled was in the build up to the journey into Desolation itself. It all happens rather abruptly, but more than that, there seems little weight behind it. A bit like kids with candy. After book five it all makes a little more sense, but at the time it is too sudden and just a touch unrealistic. It also implies that Tressa and Fi are a little bit gullible, and I don’t believe that to be the case. Not after what they’ve been through anyway.
Overall though, this is another solid book in a solid series, and it lays a great platform for book five. Bring it on.
I read this a couple of days ago so can't remember details. I know that Tressa and Fi accompany Donovan to Desolation because he insists that the answers to rescuing Dragonlands from impending disaster will be found there. We find out what happened to the adults that disappeared in the prelude of the first book. Why Donovan wants Tressa to bring them back to life isn't really explained. He indicates that their presence won't be a deterrent to his plans so what was the point? Either in this book or the next we find out that the residents of Desolation aren't really humans. Again I don't understand the point of the deception.
Tressa and Fi are bamboozled into relinquishing their ability to turn into dragons which turns out to be a very bad move. Tressa is able to overcome this later and flies over the mountains seeking her friends to let them know what she has discovered in Desolation.
This book fell at the end to me to a "muahaha" almost middle grade one.
Prose/ Voice (0.6) Characters (0.6): Four books in and I still don't care about anyone. My favorite is Connor and sometimes I like Tressa but sometimes she's so annoying. World (0.65): It keeps growing not a fan of any land though. Story (0.6): I thought some of the solutions and twists in the end were convenient and not believable. Enjoyment/ Message (0.55): As I said in every update, this is the least favorite for me.
Jensen really got me with this one. I've been in a reading slump, so it took me a while to finish this one. The twists and how things are tying up to end with the final book have me on edge. I can't wait to see how Jensen decided to finish up the story of Tressa, Connor, and Bastian.
In trying not to give anything away but the reason like this series is I cannot predict what is going to happen. Everything has its purpose and slowly reveals its self at the right moment.
Wish you were a dragon, read on and discover the costs and turns. Even her friends bring a few twists of their own. Discover the true villain you wont see coming.
So many secrets! What I love most about this series is that you can't predict the journey. There are so many twists and turns and surprises along the way. It keeps you on your toes and always wondering what will happen. As the people of Hutton's Bridge fight for their freedom and seek to return to the days of simplicity, they find themselves fighting harder and harder for safety. New allies are met along the way, but that doesn't mean they are friends. Everyone has their own agenda and it makes you want to scream at the people of the Dragonlands to just work together. The author has truly written a fantastic series.
Book number 4, also a 2.5 more than a 2. Tressa once again annoyed me. When will she stop making people die for her to rescue her friends? I love Fi, but if Tressa wanted to get her back, she should've done it on her own. The whole Donovan spin was a little confusing and I feel unnecessary. I get Jensen is trying to keep it fresh, but I think she's getting that little bit too close to trying too hard. I feel this book was a bit pointless except for a few little things, that could've easily been included in another book. Hopefully the last book brings it all back and ends the series on a massive high instead of a down

The fourth installment in the Dragonlands series picks up the story seamlessly and finishes strong. Man, for as relatively subpar as the actual writing itself is, this author definitely knows how to turn up with the unexpected plot twists. Holy crap, I did NOT see that coming. In fact, I'm so eager to dive into the fifth and final book that I can't be fucked to continue writing this review. Bye!
Even better than the last three. Answered some questions and brought up more. Can't wait to read the next one. One of the best new twists on a familiar species I've read in a long time.
I bought the omnibus. I just finished book 4 early this morning (around 3am) and started book 5. I am so hooked on this series. Loving every minute of it. Fantastic storyline, and characters. I'm anxious to find out what happens, but dread finishing. I'd give it 10 stars if I could.
Need I really say more? When you find yourself done with the first 3 books and know the story continues you just have to get the next book to keep up to date...
