The Crux
Heart overruled is an amazing bengali Tamil Romance by Debanjana Mukherjee. It's a love story between Arvind a tamil guy and Parineeta a Bengali girl. The story starts in a wedding of Parineeta's sister Rishi and Sangeeta who also plays an important roles along with their parents of Arvind's and Parineeta's as they are Arvind's friends too. It was a love at first sight for Parineeta in her sisters marriage. Then eight years passed and she moved to Boston for work. There she meet Arvind again and with the help of him she moved as his neighbour. Then they fall in love with each other, but when it comes to marriage Arvind's parents do not want him to get married to any one outside their community. Can they overcome the obstacles that they face and win their love against all odds is the remaining story for you to catch up with.

My Two Cents:-
This is a beautifully written book by the author. A very engaging read. The plot and narrations are perfect with little twists. Storyline is crafted really well, with the pacing controlled very well. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. It's an absolute page turner and a delight to read if you are a lover of romance novels. Go grab it soon.

It is a beautiful book. Intercultural relationships are evidently difficult as depicted in the story. It provides a conflict between what a person desires and what is expected by his family. The experience of characters makes us recollect the obstacles cross-cultural relationships introduce!

I particularly enjoyed the part in the book where the writer talks about the burden of tradition and the collision of expectations. These themes are touched upon in a realistic and provoking manner by the author!

The conflict of Aravind demonstrates the contraposition between his desires and the demands of his family. It is understandable that he is quiet in his resistance, and it leaves Parineeta uncertain and anxious about their future!

The prose of the author is simple and strong, which combines with the warmth and sincerity of the story and makes the book quite interesting and difficult to read!

The book is like someone who has been in a similar position is a friend. Whether you have had difficulty balancing between family expectations and your personal dreams or have had a friend who did, this tale will be familiar. It is cozy, natural, and makes you directly enter the feelings!

Since the very onset, 'Heart Overruled' had me intrigued. I found myself immersed in a love story that feels at once enduring and firmly rooted in the everyday truths of cross-cultural India. It goes far beyond conventional romance, unfolding instead as a thoughtful meditation on identity, fate, and the choices that quietly yet powerfully shape who we become.
Set against the vibrant intersections of Bengali and Tamil cultures, Heart Overruled unfurls the lives of Parineeta (Pari) and Aravind, two souls whose first encounter at her sister’s wedding seems like any fleeting moment of butterflies or crush— until life, with its own mysterious hand, brings them together again years later. This second meeting in a city far from their motherland and comfort zone isn’t just a coincidence; it’s the irritable spark that ignites a love neither expected, but both can’t ignore.

Debanjana Mukherjee creates her protagonist raw and vulnerable, dealing with conflicting thoughts and emotions. I admire how she struck a seamless balance between Pari and Arvind, their differences seeking attention quietly and creating distinction.
The narrative is engrossing and it really wraps you in emotions. She creates characters who are strong but yet need a little nudge to go all out, and love bare-heartedly with purity.

Parineeta (Pari) is warmth and vulnerability personified — thoughtful, expressive, and guided by an old-soul belief in love. Her courage lies in feeling deeply while standing up to familial and cultural expectations, making her inner conflicts achingly real.
Aravind, in contrast, is quiet and grounded. His story is not just about love, but about reconciling it with duty and tradition. His restraint adds depth to his vulnerability, making him refreshingly human rather than conventionally heroic.
Together, they navigate a love that demands courage — one that must negotiate tradition, challenge boundaries, and earn acceptance through honesty and resolve.

There are countless love stories out there, but Heart Overruled quietly sets itself apart — lingering long after the last page because its emotions feel honest and lived-in. The writing is understated yet evocative, allowing the heart of the story to unfold without excess drama. What truly elevates it for me is the delicate weaving of cultures — Bengali warmth meeting Tamil resilience — rendered with such care that I felt fully immersed in both worlds.

Who should pick this up?

If I were to recommend Heart Overruled, it would be to readers who crave romance that feels sincere rather than staged, and emotions that unfold gently instead of following clichés. This book will resonate with anyone drawn to cross-cultural love stories — the kind that show how affection learns to exist between traditions, not outside them.
I would especially suggest it to readers who value character-led narratives, where emotions are layered and growth feels earned, and to those exploring contemporary Indian fiction that portrays love with honesty rather than gloss. And if you’ve ever paused to wonder whether love can truly negotiate between destiny and tradition, this story might just leave you nodding, reflecting, and perhaps wiping away a quiet tear or two.

It is an emotionally engaging contemporary romance that explores the constant tug-of-war between logic and feelings. The story begins from the Bengali Wedding scene where 16 year old Parineeta is getting ready alongwith her bride sister, Sangeeta, who is eldest of the three Ganguly siblings, about to marry her college sweetheart, Rishi.

Parineeta spotted her sister's friend, Aravind, who came up for their wedding, after getting leave from work. Parineeta loved the way he carried himself and time seemed to slow down for her. Sangeeta introduced her to Aravind as her kid-sister which she didn't liked as she began to feel crush on him. But he didn't showed any interest in her inspite of her so much efforts.

Finally with a heavy heart, Parineeta sighed and decided to focus on the festivities around her, determined to enjoy the remaining moments of her sister's celebration. But destiny brought them together after 8 years in Boston where she went for new job and he is the one helping her to settle there. The writing explores the inner conflicts of its characters, showing how carefully built plans can crumble when the heart begins to speak louder than reason. It collects the uncertainty, excitement, and vulnerability that accompany love in depth.

I liked the characters who believe in planning their lives carefully—until emotions begin to challenge their convictions and the heart refuses to be silenced by reason. As Parineeta and Aravind’s paths intertwine, they both felt moments of hesitation, unspoken emotions, and inner conflict. Both felt a bond towards each other that turned into love between them.

The story opens smoothly, blending introspection with heartfelt conversations. The writing is smooth and easy to understand with details of the plot in every scene. It reminds readers that while the mind seeks control and certainty, the heart often chooses its own path.

After a while I came across a book filled with friendship, family bonds, crushes, marriage, relationships, jealousy, office environments, moving to different places to pursue careers/education, and last but not least, destiny.

To start with, the book begins with a wedding ceremony of Sangeetha and Rishi. Sangeetha was accompanied by her younger sister, Parineeta. Pari was adoring her sister’s dressing and makeup when there came a voice from the door. Pari’s brother asked whether the bride was ready, as the groom’s family was approaching soon.

As the sisters stepped out, squeezing hands together, waiting for the groom, Pari was stunned by encountering Aravind, who was tall and handsome. He immediately stole Pari’s heart. Pari can't take her eyes off him and wonders who he is. After some time, she gets to know that Aravind was a common friend of Sangeetha and Rishi. Pari tried to impress Aravind and get his attention. But somewhat she was treated as a kid (she was in high school). After marriage, everyone went back, and Pari’s crush was buried deep down.

After 8 years, Pari was pursuing her studies in the states, and her sister was settled along with Rishi in the states. In her final year, Pari got a job in Boston and decided to move there. Everything was going good until destiny brought Aravind back into Pari’s life.

In Boston, Pari was taken care of by Aravind (as he was working and living in Boston). Aravind and Pari’s bond were slowly developed and moved from friendship to the next level. But one bitter truth jeopardizes the bond and distances them from each other.

Did Pari and Aravind end up together? That is the rest of the story.

I personally loved the way the author penned down each detail in simple words. Looking for a book filled with emotions and love? Then this would be your cup of cake. Love always finds its way back!

Ending 2025 with this book felt like the perfect wrap to my reading year, and it has officially claimed a spot on my favourite desi-romance list.

Being a South Indian, Heart Overruled by Debanjana Mukherjee is a sweet, gentle romance that feels very close to real life. It is a tender, slow burn romance that follows Parineeta and Aravind who are from 2 different states. This book explores how love can quietly but powerfully push back against logic, family expectations, and cultural norms.

Both characters are constantly juggling what their hearts want and what their families and careers demand. Pari instantly became one of my favourite female characters s for the quiet strength and confidence she shows, especially when life keeps throwing tough situations at her. Her family is another major highlight for me , the kind of warm, grounded, rock-solid support system everyone wishes they had in their corner, handling conflicts with so much maturity, love, and understanding.

The cross-cultural detailing of food, language, family dynamics, expectations adds warmth and making the romance feel rooted and relatable. This is not a high-angst, trope-heavy romance, instead, it leans into mature conversations, slow emotional build-up, and the constant tug-of-war between head and heart. The writing is simple, clean, and focused more on emotions than drama, so it feels like watching two real people figure out their feelings instead of a filmy, over-the-top love story.

If you enjoy slow-burn, multicultural romances where love grows quietly through everyday moments and honest conversations, this book is a great pick.

Heart Overruled is not a love story that arrives loudly.
It enters quietly
in pauses between conversations
in concern that lingers longer than it should
in feelings that were never invited.
.
.
This story follows two people who begin their connection under practical and controlled circumstances where love is neither expected nor allowed. From the start... the relationship is bound by rules, responsibilities and the belief that emotions must stay in check.
.
What makes this book relatable is how naturally love grows. It does not arrive as a sudden confession but through shared silences ... small gestures...emotional dependence... and unspoken care. The characters are aware of what they are doing and that awareness brings guilt. They repeatedly try to pull away reminding themselves that choosing the heart would mean disruption, pain and uncertainty.
.
The middle of the book is heavy with emotional conflict. Distance, misunderstandings and inner battles dominate as both characters attempt to prioritize logic over feeling. Yet every effort to suppress love only deepens it. Their struggle is not with each other...but with themselves between who they are expected to be and what they truly feel.
.
The turning point arrives when they realize that a life built purely on practicality feels incomplete. Love even when risky offers a sense of truth that logic cannot replace. By the end they choose honesty over fear and accept the consequences of following their hearts.
.
The conclusion is ...that it is calming read.

"Heart Overruled" by Debanjana Mukherjee is a sweet, heartwarming, feel-good romantic story that explores love, identity, and the choices that defy cultural expectations in cross-community settings.

In the story, we follow Parineeta and Aravind. When Parineeta first meets Aravind at her sister's wedding, she immediately has a teenage crush on him, and destiny plays its part. Now, after eight years, they are again in each other's lives. We now witness whether any love blossoms or if it has withered away with all the other expectations and limitations of life and society.

The story has tropes like sister's best friend/brother-in-law's best friend, second-chance romance, and age gap. Don’t worry, it’s not creepy or tacky, but a good, mature one, where the heroine is 24 years old and the hero is 32 years old. The portrayal of the characters is also very relatable, and you will fall for them immediately.

The story has so many sweet moments, not only between the main characters but also between siblings, families, and friends. I love the details that the author uses here, like when Parineeta's parents use “ma” while calling her, an endearment used in most Bengali households. And not just this—the way the author presents the authentic rituals and practices makes me feel happy and nostalgic.

The romance is a slow-burn one, so if you are looking for a romance that focuses more on connection, the characters’ personal growth, how the relationship grows gradually, and how love finds its way, then this book is for you.

This story will make you feel the rush of your first crush as well as the beauty of loving someone whole heartedly.

Story of Parineeta and Aravind where they initially meet at her sister’s wedding who is his friend’s too. While Pari’s heart skips a beat at his sight, he merely considers her his friend’s kid sister. When they meet again is when she finds a job at his company and his city, Boston. Their destinies get entwined and they fall for each other. However, cultural differences and misunderstandings come in their way. How they navigate their relationship is what makes this tale.

What catches the attention of the reader is the depiction of the beauty of love. The fluttering of the heart on eye contact and the happiness on merely catching a glance of the other person and similar nuanced portrayal of love makes this story adorable. The blossoming of love and its encounters with misconceptions etc are believable and relatable. The romance is nicely complemented with realistic life events which helps the reader connect with the story.

The elements of culture , lifestyle and career bring out the complete picture. The contemporary romance is not a fairy tale but narrated with all aspects including quarrels and heartbreaks.

Overall, this is a feel good contemporary romance which will make the reader remember their crush and first love and feel the feels all over again.

Book Review: Heart Overruled
Author: Debanjana Mukherjee

This is a Bengali Tamil Romance as the subtitle suggests. Hero is a Tamilian and heroine is from Bengal. They fall in love head over heels with each other, but when it comes to marriage the hero has a problem as his parents do not want him to marry any one outside their community and culture. The Hero Aravind is torn between his duty towards his parents and his beloved. He plays on a waiting game by refusing whatever proposals his father sends. Parineeta, the heroine does not know whether Aravind would finally get the consent of his parents or not. How the couple overcome this cultural barrier perceived and strongly believed by Aravind's parents is the story.

The author herself being Bengali and her husband being Tamilian, we do not know how much of the story is biographical.

The sister and brother-in-law of Parineeta being classmates of Aravind are also important characters alongwith the parents of both the parties.

Coming from the author whose earlier and debut novel The Divide Between Us -- An Indo Pak Love Story, the cultural and caste obstacles coming between marriages within Indian borders are sensitively dealt with.

The book is a page turner and would be delightful read for the lovers of romance thrillers.

Heart Overruled by Debanjana Mukherjee is a charming romance novel that beautifully captures a heartfelt story of love battling against cultural and family expectations.

The story takes us into a cross-cultural relationship where the characters face the challenge of balancing parental pressures and traditions, ultimately letting their hearts lead the way. Amid societal hurdles like conflicting family values and the struggle to honor their parents while following their dreams, the protagonists find themselves caught in a tender, emotional dance.

The author masterfully creates relatable emotional moments, making the theme of "heart overruled" feel genuine and heartfelt.

The book offers a warm, immersive romance, realistically depicting cultural conflicts and an undeniable attraction that sparks between the characters.

What I loved most was:

✓ The powerful moment when their chemistry helps them overcome parental opposition.

✓ Sweet, tender scenes that blend tradition with passion, creating a cozy warmth that feels so real.

These moments beautifully express the pain of divided loyalties and the emotional weight of cultural expectations versus true love.

“The path ahead still seemed challenging, but he knew he wasn’t alone in this battle. They were a team and together they would find a way to make their love story a reality.”

“Heart Overruled” by Debanjana Mukherjee is not yet another romance or a fairytale. The book takes you on a journey where two people from different cultures meet up and find a path together.

The story revolves around Parineeta and Aravind. The journey begun when they first saw each other at a wedding. They didn’t know they’ll ever meet again, but destiny had beautiful plans!

Parineeta vulnerable, yet a thoughtful and expressive girl is just opposite to Aravind, who is quite and grounded.

Due to the cultural differences their tie looks a bit complicated infused with a lot of expectations from either of their families. With love and a lot of courage, they explore their journey despite being questioned.

The writing is easy to follow and has a lot of emotions. Overall, the book is like a bundle of emotions which takes the reader on a journey.

Read the book to find out how Arvind and Parineeta fly off together despite their differences.

This novel captures the unfolding of a love story captured within the lives of two vastly different people. The story captures initially a wide variety of emotions. Parineeta and Aravind encounter each other time and again but love does not explode like fireworks; instead it arrives with a painful longing and an overwhelming desire to finally be fulfilled.

The author captures that love is certainly much more than just one person falling for the other but rather that love can also be the merging of two people, two-by-two, from the perspective of the birth of the relationship with the two protagonists, and how each has brought what they have learned in their cultures, what type of love is like in their cultures to a new and unique place they didn't know existed.

The author narrates a tale that explains, ‘Nothing is more beautiful than the tender reminder that sometimes the heart does not fight but simply knows.’ This quote speaks volumes to many people who have been through love and relationships, and have experienced heart break. What makes this story linger is not the romance alone, but the courage it takes to choose love when certainty is absent.

Heart Overruled is a detailed, compelling story of love that quietly examines the tiny boundary between love and fidelity. At the meeting place of Bengali and Tamil cultures, it dramatically shows how much the lovers can be separated by the mighty hands of tradition, family expectations, and personal wants.

Parineeta and Aravind are inviting the reader— they are good, shy, honest, and indeed, human beings. Still, their love is not just a scandal; it is the enactment of day-to-day life, the postponing of feelings, and the unvoiced anxieties that layer the conflict with realism instead of just being acted out. The barrier of cultures is not overstated; it is so real, so recognized, and so Indian.

The fresh novel, with its precise, vivid language, and skillful pacing, is no more a tale of love; it becomes a contemplative dialogue on decision-making, bravery, and the sometimes mute but powerful endurance that is needed to follow one's heart. An entertaining, connecting, and unforgettable read.

Romance has always been a favourite genre of mine, not just because of the sigh of happy endings which give me the happy pill, but because there are so many psyche elements melded into which bring to light a focus on values of each of the characters that it becomes even more of a beautiful read for a layer lover like me *wink*. When I got a chance to read this mixed culture romance, I was even more curious.

Well, this book delves into Parineeta, our FMC and Aravind, our MMC's love story. They do have a small background of Aravind being Parineeta's sister's friend, which fuels nostalgia of a first crush during her sister's wedding, which packs on when Parineeta moves to Boston, where Aravind is called in to help her settle.

From there on, their connection deepens with their own twists and turns of family values and love, creating a beautiful love story from start to finish.
For me perse, I loved the trajectory of the story, bringing in the thoughtfulness of the author, starting from their love story highlighting love is essentially between the two lovers, and then moving on toward bringing their values to focus by involving their families. The way the story melded in with openness by Parineeta's father, trying to understand Aravind's father's thought processes and values and ultimately becoming a family was really beautiful.

This became such a heartwarming read for me, that albeit I read it one day, I kept reminiscing about the story.

A beautiful tale of love ,which not only touches the heart but also make you fall in love once again. Parineeta meet Aravind during her sister's wedding and fall in love with him at first glance . As she was a teenager only , Aravind hadn't noticed her and parineeta let it go with heavy heart . But when life gave her second chance to rekindle the connection ,she was beyond ecstatic. What happen and whether they found their forever with each other or not ,you have to read the story to find out. A beautiful tale of love and longing which touches not only touches the chord of heart but also make us belive in true love. The story is all about love and bonding whether its of life partner or sibling bond or parent's and children's. This is a roller coaster of emotion which keeps you hooked till end. The language is superb and the narration is medium paced and described in such a way that you feel like scenes are playing infront of your eyes. A must read .

There’s something magical about stories that remind you of your first crush, and Heart Overruled does exactly that.
Parineeta meets Aravind at her sister’s wedding and develops a harmless, fleeting crush that lasts only three days. Life moves on. Ten years pass. Careers are built and dreams are achieved. Then fate steps in. When Parineeta relocates to a new state for her dream job, she unknowingly runs into the very same Aravind, who now plays an unexpected role in her life.
The charm of this book lies in its tenderness. It is not loud or dramatic. Instead, it is gentle, nostalgic, and quietly romantic. The cultural backdrop of two different states adds warmth, and the reunion feels natural rather than forced.
This book made me smile to myself more times than I can count. If you enjoy slow-burn romance, destiny-driven reunions, and stories that feel like a warm hug with butterflies, this one is for you 💗

This book is the perfect cozy romantic read that beautifully captures the tug of war between love and the deep respect we hold for our parents. It explores the hurdles every cross-cultural relationship faces—the clash of expectations, the weight of tradition, and the undeniable chemistry that defies logic.
Through a journey that tests the strength of true love, the story reminds us how life doesn’t pause for heartbreak or longing; we still have to meet deadlines and manage everyday routines while navigating the labyrinths of our emotions.
The author's crisp, evocative writing combined with a rare warmth and honesty in the story, makes it hard to put the book down!!
