The book of Philippians challenges Christians to remember their true identity as citizens of God's kingdom, especially when faced with difficult circumstances and painful trials.
Helping us grasp the apostle Paul's gospel-centered exhortation to endurance, this guide explains the biblical text with clarity and passion--encouraging us to joyfully imitate Christ in the midst of hardship.
Over the course of 12 weeks, these studies explore books of the Bible and: Ask thoughtful questions to spur discussion Show how each passage unveils the gospel Tie the text in with the whole story of Scripture Illuminate the doctrines taught in each passage Invite you to discover practical implications Help you better understand and apply God's Word
I would not suggest you choose this book for your first Bible study.
The questions seem drawn out at times and are unclear. I have a lot of "???" included as my answers. Definitely, for a more seasoned student of the Word and having the ESV Study Bible is a big help as well.
Overall ok, but frustrating, and as the leader of my Bible study group using this book, I had to continually encourage my members to just do the best they could with the questions.
I did this as part of a men’s group study in my church. Overall I would say it’s a very good study. The only exception being that not all of the questions presented to the reader are as well thought out as others.
This book provides historical, cultural and behind the scenes information related to the Philippian church. Also divides into sections of questions meant to draw our thoughts upward towards God and inward to our own thoughts and motivations. Well done.
We had a great zoom group of 35 women, the teaching by our leader was great, but I found it way too slow and with questions, like fill in the blanks. During covid time it was very comforting.
This Bible study is an excellent 12-week study on the book of Philippians that keeps you focused on the word and the original context of the book. The first chapter is an introduction to the book and the last chapter is a review with each chapter in between focusing on a specific passage. At the end of each chapter there is a section that is basically a commentary of the passage split into three sections "Gospel Glimpses," "Whole-Bible Connections," and "Theological Soundings" followed by space to reflect on each article.
I found this study to be very beneficial in my spiritual growth. It is not filled with fluff. I get frustrated by many women's Bible studies (this one not being gender-directed) that have discussion questions that focus on how you feel or what you think or ask you to picture yourself in the situation. I do not think that this is how God has intended us to study the Bible; it puts our focus on ourselves instead of the God of the universe. This study places our focus on the latter as Paul so fervently declares in the book of Philippians. It also gets us into the context of the book, teaching why Paul was writing what he did to the Philippians and bringing in Old Testament context behind the letter.
Philippians is a very familiar book and yet I learned a lot and feel like I grew in my faith through this study. This study is not geared towards new Christians (although new Christians would definitely benefit from it). It is geared to Christians who want to grow in their faith; to feed on meat instead of on milk. It takes a lot of work, but the work is definitely worth it! It is beneficial in a group Bible study setting as well as for individual study.
I only have a few criticisms of the study. Some of the questions did not have enough space afterwards to answer the questions. Also, a few of the questions were a bit confusing and did not give much context to help answer them. Some people have criticized that there is not a leader's guide with an answer key for this study. I found that it's really unnecessary. I think that if there were an answer key, many people would simply seek that instead of digging deeper into the word to find the answer to difficult questions.
This study is part of a series called "Knowing the Bible" published by Crossway, which has (or will have) a study on every book of the Bible. Each study is written by a different author, but with the same format throughout. If you are interested in a Bible study that challenges you and gets you deeper into the word, I highly recommend this series.
Great Bible study. Unfortunately we tried to use it in a slightly different context and it didn't work out too well. But it wasn't an issue with the study at all. The study provided great insight and wisdom into Philippians.
