A sweet, tender story about grieving and redemption centered in a small bakery where an injured ballerina finds new purpose.

Sophie had a life long dream to become a ballerina. This achieved she was soaring until an abrupt injury ended that dream. One day she goes into a small bakery asking to be considered for the baker, Giacomo’s open position thinking it’s a receptionist position. Upon learning it’s a baker position, Sophie seems reluctant but finds that making bread has its own music and tempo. Over time as Sophie recovers she yearns to return to her former life but that has moved on and her recognizes the beauty her new life has brought.

The book is very simple but filled with emotional froth. Lots of southern Italian charm comes through via Giacomo. Sophie’s niece, Anouk, who’s been given the role of Mary in her Christmas play steals the book.

Perfect for readers who enjoy cozy stories about people rediscovering themselves.

I loved the author's door-to-door bookstore, but this one did NOT hit for me. It just felt like the author was trying to romanticise and brush over things in a way that didn't seem genuine or kind to me. I read the last 60% in one sitting, so there's that. With that said, I was mostly reading because I was surprised by how many things he was doing that I was not enjoying. His writing is fine, his characterisation is decent, but I dislike almost every choice he makes with them.

The Story Baker by Carsten Henn:

I gave this one 5 stars

Starting *The Story Baker*, I wasn't really sure what to expect because it had been a while since I'd read the blurb. With that being said, I went in fully expecting a romance, but as Sofie's story started to unfold, I was pleasantly surprised by what this book actually became.

Sofie's ballet career abruptly ends after an injury ruins any chance she had of continuing professionally, and she's left trying to figure out what comes next. Eventually, she finds herself working at Giacomo's bakery in the small town she lives in. What starts as simply a job slowly becomes something much more important to her as she discovers how similar the process of making bread can be to dancing: the rhythm, movement, repetition, and care that go into creating something.

But this isn't a story where Sofie walks into a bakery, and suddenly everything is okay. She's grieving the life and future she thought she was going to have, and she goes through so many emotions while trying to figure out who she is without ballet. I really appreciated that the book allows her to feel all of that and brings you along for the ride rather than immediately giving her a new purpose.

On the other side of things, Giacomo is reckoning with his own difficult memories while quite literally breathing life into dough and the people around him. I loved his witty analogies, songs, and the little pieces of wisdom he shares with Sofie. Their relationship and the way the bakery slowly becomes a place of comfort and healing were probably my favorite parts of the book.

While the beginning definitely had me thinking I knew where the story was going romantically, I actually loved the direction it ultimately took. It became so much more about grief, starting over, finding purpose after losing something that defined you, and the people who unexpectedly help you find your way again.

*The Story Baker* was such a warm, cozy read while still having a surprising amount of emotional depth. It's one of those books that feels comforting without pretending that difficult things aren't difficult.

I will definitely be adding this one to my "rereadable" pile for whenever I need a pick-me-up.

Thank you to NetGalley and publishers for this ARC in exchange for my honest review!

This book took me forever to read!!!!! I had a hard time relating to and connecting with the characters. I didn’t really feel like I understood why Sofie made half of the decisions she made. Her dismissiveness toward her husband seemed unwarranted. I wanted to understand better why she didn’t seem interesting in mending their relationship. Was it because she had found something more fulfilling and realized she didn’t want a life with him in the first place? Were there tendencies of his that she didn’t like? It just felt unnecessary for her to purposely avoid communicating her feelings.

I also felt like the dialogue was very stiff. I couldn’t imagine how the characters were moving, the expressions they were giving, etc. This part of chapter 6 was especially confusing:

Anouk took hold of Elsa's hand and stroked it. "It won't
hurt at all, Auntie Elsa!"
Sofie had to smile. Her niece was at the age where everyone was an aunt or uncle; everyone was a relation, everyone was family.
"Now you're blessed" came Anouk's voice again. "You have no more sins. It's like you've never done anything wrong. That's nice, isn't it?"
There was a faint tremor in Elsa's harsh voice. "Yes, it's nice." She swallowed. "Would you like a cherry lolly?"

I was so confused. Did Anouk close her eyes while she blessed her? Was her small hand cold or clammy or warm? Did she whisper something???? I found myself confused and bored several time throughout the story because I couldn’t imagine anything about the characters due to the lack of description of just about everything.

I do think a lot of thought when into the symbolism and comparing life to baking bread. Maybe someone who is or has been a baker would connect better with these characters. As for me. I found them very two dimensional.

I loved the author's other book that is The Door-to-Door Bookstore and I was so excited to picked up this one but unfortunately the story is very different than that one and I don't like any of the characters and connected with them at all.

The story is about sofie who has this kind of mid-life crisis where she need to let go of her dream and career as a ballerina due to the injury. Her husband, who also works in the same industry, always supportive to her but unfortunately this turns of event caused a rift between them. For financial reason, sofie got a job in a bakery, it was supposed to be a temporary one but she grew to love baking, not to mention its a nice distraction for her as she has problem in her marriage.

It's more on Sofie's side as she resented her husband and yet didn't communicate their problems at all, while the husband still trying his best to save their marriage which she always ignored.

She developed feeling with the bakery owner while the husband rekindled a relationship with someone from his past. Yup, trigger warning for the cheating frenzy that this book has become.

I do appreciated that there's so many life philosophy you can learn from making some bread, like you can shape your life the way you shape your dough and what not but the way all the characters fall in love too easy to fall out in love and back in love again in a blink of an eye really unnerved me, none of them feel real, its like a bad actors playing a bad soap operas.

Well at least the book is short and you can finish it in a day, and there's like cameos of some characters from The Door-to-Door Bookstore which is nice.

Thanks Netgalley for the ARC

A while back I fell in love with a small book called The Door-to-Door Bookstore. I found it charming and heartwarming and have been recommending it to everyone looking for something uplifting. Now I have two books by the same author to recommend.

The Story Baker is not just a very sweet story of found family, love, and growth; it also hits very close to home for me.

Giacomo is Italian and misses home, but he can't leave the life he has built over half a lifetime, and that is something I deeply relate to. I personally loved the references to Italian southern culture, and I knew all the songs!!!
Sophie touched me too, in a very personal way, as she navigates reinventing herself and dealing with some demons!
The side characters were amazing too! And added a lot of depth to the story!
And I do love baking bread!

This book is charming and deep in its simplicity. Henn creates impressive characters with a lot of depth and places them into a seemingly simple story. The language, even in translation, is straightforward but engaging, and hits you in the feelings when you least expect it.

Much much love for this one!

One last thing: I do love a good Easter egg, and there are two in this book!

I received an eARC of this book from NetGalley and the publisher, for which I thank them.

“The Story Baker” is by Carsten Henn. I wanted to enjoy this book more than I did. I liked the premise - a prima ballerina suffers a career ending injury and, in order to continue receiving health benefits, becomes an apprentice baker. My one issue (okay, I’ve a few!) was that the language felt stilted but, at the same time, had so much symbolism that, honestly, for me it read oddly. I understand that Sophie, the MFC, was dealing with losing her livelihood, but how she treated people (especially her husband) felt worse than lashing out because you’re hurt - it felt mean - so it was difficult for me to always feel empathy for her and her situation. I’m also all for baking bread analogies, but there were a bit too many for my taste. The other thing I found bothersome was that there were so many huge feelings in this book, but apparently talking to your spouse was something no one ever thought to do - which made me wonder if these were teenagers or adults - technically adults, but miscommunication is one thing I don’t like in books. Overall this wasn’t a bad book, but it had issues that I cannot overlook.

Sofie was a prima ballerina who, unfortunately, suffered an injury that ended her career. Devastated by her injury, she feels that there’s no other job she can do. Meanwhile, Giacomo is the village’s baker and needs an assistant.

Sofie needs a job soon because her unemployment benefits would end. She goes to Giacomo’s bakery to apply as his assistant baker. When Giacomo sees Sofie, he has a feeling that she would be a great baker as he teaches her the techniques. Sofie is hesitant to become a baker because her previous job was a ballerina and she feels she doesn’t belong there.

As she trains under Giacomo, she starts to feel that she has a second chance in life as a baker. She enjoys listening to Giacomo’s philosophy about baking and life.

It’s a cozy read that shows you can start over again when your initial plan didn’t go as planned.
However, the ending finished too abruptly. The conflicts were solved within a chapter. There was no lead-up to solving the conflicts. It felt like the author wanted to end the story quickly.

Thank you, HarperCollins, for letting me read this ARC! I enjoyed reading it!

I’m so sad to say I really didn’t enjoy this at all….and I really had a hard time coming to the end.
The first thing that I really didn’t enjoy was the writing style and especially the fact that the pov changed so many times in the same chapter, and even though we did understand who’s pov it was, it was kind of unnecessary at some moments…
The second is that I didn’t got attached to the characters AT ALL…maybe a big part of it was because I found them annoying and kind of boring…
I did like some part of it, and the storyline was fine. I was really hoping to like this because this is usually the kind of story and books I like but sadly this wasn’t it for me.

Thank you for Netgalley, the publisher and the author for the arc !

This was a sweet story about grieving a previous life and finding new purpose. I really enjoyed the premise of the book. Our lives, and the lives of those we love, are constantly changing, and we have to find new ways to be happy. I loved the small town bake shop setting and the happy endings for the characters. While I knew the theme of the book going in, I was expecting something a little lighter. The narrator was fantastic; the British accent added a lot to the audiobook experience. Overall, it was a heartwarming story about finding ways to be happy when life changes, but it was a little heavy for me. I'm happy I chose to listen rather than read - it was a great companion on walks and while doing chores around the house.

Thank you to The Hive for the ALC of this book.

The Story Baker by Carsten Henn: Sofie is a ballerina who suffers a career ending accident. To support her family financially, she becomes a trainee in a bread bakery under the tutelage of Giacomo, the master Baker. Mourning the loss of her dancing career and the increase in marital tension, Sofie embraces Giacomo’s philosophy about bread and life.

Unfortunately, I was disappointed by this book. I didn’t feel invested in any character with the exception of Sofie’s niece Anouk, who brings a comedic and slightly bizarre edge to the story. The dialogue felt wooden and the story plodded. I’m sure there is an audience for this book; it just definitely wasn’t for me.

My thanks to NetGalley and Hanover Square Press for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my honest review.

Thank you to the hive for the physical ARC and ALC. while I liked the premise of this book, of being able to change what you do and what you love when life changes and also like changing with your life partners, some of it felt pretty heavy handed and a little too religious/philosophical for what I was expecting.

That being said it’s a short story with big metaphor and poetic vibes if that is your jam! It follows sofie after her ballerina career ends and she ends up taking a job in a bakery and finding her love for life again. There’s lots of love, loss, and grief. And it never really went where I expected it to go!

Beautiful storyline with intriguing cast - and just when you think you see where all the cast are headed BOOM! plot twist!!
I was a baker in my (much) younger days, so the analogies of bread to life and how life can impact bread baking was very familiar.
The cover art didn't sit well with me, as the shop depicted reflects neither the bakery in the book nor the character descriptions.
Will be setting this aside for a re-read!
And will also be looking into other books by Carsten Henn!

After a career ending injury, Sofie has left the world of ballet behind. She finds herself working in a local bakery and with the help of the head baker/owner begins to find herself again.

Really enjoyed the beginning but it started going down by chapter 4. I understand all the connections they were trying to make to life and baking but it was going too far.

And while I felt bad for Sofie at the beginning, I started to dislike her as the story went one. To be honest I couldn’t connect with any of the characters. The more I read the more disconnected I felt from the story.

Sofie is a ballet dancer, who has been replaced by Irina and she needs to attempt to find a job so that she can continue receiving unemployment. To avoid her husband, Florian, she tells him that she has to go for a job interview at a bakery. At this moment, she cannot be around Florian as he is part of the ballet production that she used to be in. Being near him is just a reminder of what she once was.

Surprisingly, Sofie gets the job at the bakery and she will be learning from Giacomo on how to make bread.

How will Sofie do when learning how to make bread? What does Giacomo think of her Sofie?

My thoughts:
It is a very cute story and I can actually see this book be a really cute romantic movie, but I could not get attached to the characters in this book, especially with Francisca and Anouk. I felt like these two characters were unnecessary, especially with Anouk thinking she is Mary. I also think there is something missing for me and it could be because it has been translated to English, so some of the emotions aren’t shining through.

Like the smell of bread baking this story enticed me and drew me in and it was warm and satisfying and left me thinking about it. It is a story of love, loss, and reshaping your life and love after rediscovering yourself. Sofie has lost her career, herself, and possibly her love when she takes a job at the village bakery. Giacomo teaches her how to bake bread with love and wishes baked in. As Sofie learns she rediscovers herself and begins to reshape her life and future. Full of community and healing that is a sweet story that lingers.

Thanks to the publisher for the free, gifted copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

How could Sophie do anything but be a ballerina?

She found out that baking was similar to dancing as she kneaded the dough in Giacomo’s bakery that brought her back to life.

THE STORY BAKER is a heartfelt read with characters that will stay with you.

Enjoy!! 5/5

In the end, there was a surprising and satisfying twist. For my taste, though, there was too much talk of dough and bread and dancing. Where was the actual story that made you care about Sofie, Giacomo and Elsa?
