A failed audition. A hometown he swore he'd left behind. And a Christmas magic he never expected to believe in.
When Broadway dancer Alex Garland's career implodes during a panic attack on stage, he retreats to Yuletide Valley—the Christmas-obsessed small town he escaped fifteen years ago. He's only passing through. Just long enough to settle his grandmother's estate and get back to his real life.
But the valley has other plans.
First, there's the community theater desperate for a director. Then there's the sick little boy who needs someone to believe in Santa. And then there's Ben Blitzen—the quiet carpenter with sawdust in his hair, magic in his hands, and a family legacy tied to Christmas itself.
As the Twelve Nights before Christmas unfold, Alex discovers that Yuletide Valley's magic is more than tinsel and tradition. The theater lights respond to emotion. The wood in Ben's workshop holds secrets. And the love growing between them might be the most impossible thing of all.
But when Broadway comes calling with a second chance, Alex must chase the spotlight he's always wanted, or trust that he's finally found where he belongs?
Christmas in the Footlights is a warm and magical MM Christmas romance about second chances, found family, and discovering that the best role you'll ever play is yourself.
An Actor finds his stage in a magical valley that protects it's residents
Prepare to be genuinely moved as you witness awe-inspiring magic that defies reality and experience a redemption that profoundly alters an actor's life.
Alex Garland believes his career in dancing and singing on stage has come to an end as a result of a panic attack he experienced during an audition for a significant role. He retreats to Yuletide Valley, a place he had left before heading to Broadway fifteen years ago. The panic attack continues to haunt him; however, after seeking refuge at his grandmother's home, where he was raised, he accepts an invitation to assist with the annual Christmas production at the grand theatre in the small town.
There, a childhood friend who crafts wood to imbue it with magical qualities—both in appearance and in the effects it produces—rejuvenates their friendship and offers unwavering support to Alex. Ben Blitzen is closely connected to traditions, magic, and deeply concealed secrets within the valley.
Alex's courage to assist with the theatre production rekindles his desire to contribute further. When the lead performer of the show sustains an injury requiring crutches, Alex reluctantly volunteers to portray Santa Claus—not in the traditional Ho-Ho-Ho manner, but as a figure who brings authentic magic to the stage and the story.
Author Declan Rhodes has impressed me with his highly technical writings, such as those on fire patterns and the work of first responders. In this Christmas love story, his passion for the characters and his rich descriptions of wood, furniture, settings, and character interactions create a world in which one longs to immerse and enjoy.
I was repeatedly highlighting graphic presentations of wood, of the theatre, of the people, and of this place. The allegories were perfect, the tone informative, and the result provocative in its representation of our character's frame of mind.
His depictions of Ben's woodworking endeavors are sensuous and credible, reflecting their shared belief in the valley's magic and the wood's significance in that realm. A revelation about the wood's power emerges late in the narrative through an almost all-important letter left to Alex by his beloved grandmother.
Ultimately, this book narrates the story of two men who fall in love. Yet, even as tears are shed for their happiness, it is fundamentally about helping others recognize their potential. For Alex, this entailed allowing himself to offer professional advice to assist others in achieving their aspirations through interactions and coaching on stage.
Alex's breakdown on the New York stage offers an opportunity for redemption in that realm, but everything has changed. His role now involves a man he loves—and who loves him in return—celebrating each other's growth and striving to be their best in a place they now both call home.
This book is Christmas and all its magic, embedded in a theater that reacts with its players, a carpenter who carves magical meanings into his wood and is related to the story of the valley’s magic, a discouraged and questioning performer returning home to grieve a loss and tie up loose ends, a small boy fighting for his life who needs to believe in the magic of Santa, and quirky villagers with magic of their own, all coming together for the Twelve Days of Christmas and a musical presentation of The Miracle on Thirty-Fourth Street to release the magic for all. It’s a book that had me in tears many times, along with laughter and smiles as Alex got caught up in the production of the musical, and pulled into the magic that was Ben and his carvings, his caring and feeling of home. The legend is that Yuletide Valley, along with the Twelve Days of Christmas, has a way of calling people who belong there home. That is what happens with Alex.
Reeling from a disastrous audition where he froze, he escapes back to Yuletide Valley to settle his grandmother’s affairs. Demoralized, doubting himself, he initially resists when townspeople want him to help with the annual Christmas play. Eventually he agrees, but then is roped into the role of Santa Claus in the production, and in the process, finds himself, his love, his future, and most importantly, he finds belief in himself, in the magic, and in the place he belongs.
There were so many emotional parts in the story — a sick child asking Santa to help her mommy remember how to smile; Ben with Alex’s mother’s music box; the Blitzen legacy; Ryan’s letter for his best friend Marcus; great great uncle Thomas’s journal; the hospital visit; the magical carvings finding souls who understand how to speak to hearts through their work, the carving recognizing its own; the reindeer blessing; the audience reaction at the end of the performance — all created a tapestry of tears, smiles, laughter and magic as I immersed myself in this beautiful tale, the perfect illustration of the magic that is Christmas.
If you believe in the magic of Santa and the meaning behind the season, I hope this book will speak to you as it did to me. Ben and Alex were meant to be, and the valley and the magic brought them together at their time. This is a book I will reread at Christmas to reawaken that sense of wonder and magic I can remember as a child. Definitely 5 stars from me, 10 if I could.
I received an ARC from the author, and this is my voluntary review.
This is the second book in the Yuletide Valley series. And an amazing story filled with magic, love and finding your way home at exactly the right time.
Alex left for the bright lights of Broadway and never looked back, but his Grandmother made sure he knew he would be welcome anytime he wanted to come home. Unfortunately Alex found out his grandmother died the day he had an important audition, so it caused a panic attack and he had a meltdown down causing him to fail in front of a theater full of producers. Alex took a train back to Yuletide Valley and promptly slipped on ice outside of Holly’s Apothecary when he stopped to see her.
Enter Ben Blitzen, who helps get Alex inside for a cup of Holly’s special blend of tea, and encourages him to come to the theater to offer his guidance in getting their Miracle on 34th Street musical ready for their Christmas Eve performance. Alex remembers Ben vaguely from high school, but Ben has had a crush on Alex since he saw him perform in musicals and feels a special bond with him that continues to strengthen the more time they spend together.
There is a wonderful cast of characters among the theater group, and the building itself has magical moments and healing powers for those that need them. While working together on the sets and lighting, Alex and Ben share memories and help bring out the best in each other on their way to falling in love. While walking through town one afternoon the reindeer started signaling to Ben and he told Alex it was part of the Blitzen family lore. While in his workshop later in the week, Ben discovers a journal written by his great great uncle that explains more about the carving magic and how it works for those who believe in it, then shares it with Alex when he comes to tell him he is staying for good in Yuletide Valley.
This is a cute Christmas romance with magic and humor, and a lot of heartwarming moments, so I highly recommend it.
Declan Rhodes has a wonderfully imaginative mind and creates amazing stories and characters everyone will enjoy. He is a must read author for sure.
A beautifully written second-chance story filled with heart, hope, and holiday enchantment. Perfect for readers who want their Christmas romances with a touch of wonder and a whole lot of love. Alex’s return to Yuletide Valley, a place he once ran from without looking back, sets the stage for a beautifully layered story about identity, healing, and rediscovering what truly feels like home.
Alex is instantly compelling: a talented performer whose confidence has been shaken to its core. Watching him arrive with every intention of keeping his stay strictly temporary, only to be slowly drawn into the town’s charm, is incredibly satisfying. Yuletide Valley is more than festive—it’s quietly enchanted, and the subtle magic woven into the theatre, the handcrafted woodwork, and even the tea he’s offered makes the whole setting feel alive.
Then there’s Ben Blitzen, the soft-spoken carpenter whose quiet steadiness contrasts beautifully with Alex’s restless energy. Ben’s craft, his connection to the valley’s traditions, and his gentle heart make him an irresistible presence. Their chemistry builds slowly and sweetly, grounded in genuine care rather than instant infatuation, and the ways their lives intertwine—through community theatre, unexpected responsibilities, and the Valley’s gentle nudges, feel organic and heartfelt.
The supporting cast adds warmth and whimsy, from children who still believe in wonder to locals who understand far more than they let on. And the festive magic, never overbearing, always enchanting, adds an extra sparkle to Alex’s journey as he rediscovers passion, purpose, and the possibility of staying in one place long enough to truly belong. Fantastic read I received a free arc copy and this is my honest review
Beauty, wonder, magic and love, so much love, exude from this story. There were tears along the way, from me and from the characters, but they were beautiful, happy tears creeping out because the story held so much hope, gave so much hope and promise and did it without demanding anything in return. Just as the magical Yuletide Valley welcomes home those it knows belong, this book welcomes in readers who need it, belong with it, whose hearts find their home in it.
Declan Rhodes has crafted more than a story, the words on the page are more than words, this is a feeling, so deep it reaches to your soul. If ever your faith in magic, in Christmas, in people, in community has wavered this story will restore it all. Just as Ben Blitzen is the fifth generation of his family to work in the Valley, restoring, bringing life and hope into everything he touches. Just as the old theatre which is seeing new life indicates its approval, just as the children whose hospital the theatre is fundraising for need someone to believe in them this book is there for you. It believes in you and reminds you to believe in yourself.
The romance is woven in to every line, to every movement of the chisel, to every step in rehearsal. It is a truth, acknowledged but allowed time to grow. This book is magical. It needs to be found, read, cherished and tucked safely away, its words always there, always knowing always ready.
Alex Garland went off to the bright lights of the city at 18. After 15 years on Broadway, still a dancer in the chorus, he froze during his audition for a lead because the beloved Grandmother who stepped in when his mother passed, had died. And he was heartbroken. So, he returned to Yuletide Valley 12 days before Christmas to lick his wounds. It was only supposed to be a two week stay to get his feet back under him. Instead, he slipped off those feet in front of Holly’s Apothecary and crashed in front of the most gorgeous man he had ever see. Ben Blitzen had gotten an architecture degree and returned to Yuletide Valley and his true love, woodworking. When Ben reached down to help Alex up, all the Christmas lights strung on the streetlamps brightened, but then Yuletide Valley was well known for it’s magic, especially in the Twelve Nights. And so, the whole town conspired to get Alex to be the emergency director of their Christmas Eve musical Miracle on 34th Street. And of course, to get Alex and Ben together. I’m not usually a fan of Christmas stories but I have been reading a lot of Declan Rhodes lately so I thought I would give it a try Christmas in the Footlights as an ooey gooey magical Christmas story that will give you all the feels. Great world building and lots of plot twists. I give it a 9.5!

Alex left home and became a broadway star until the day he had 3 panic attacks during a Phantom callback before 50 directors after hearing his grandmother died which ended his career. He went back home feeling he was a failure, he slipped and fell on some ice in front of a store. Ben picks him up the Holly and Mrs. Brubaker asks him to direct the Christmas play because Sandra broke her leg. They tell him the valley called him back for a purpose Ben has been waiting too Alex is afraid of having more panic attacks. He changes the play everyone listens and does what he says and shows them what he wants. Ben is fixing the scenes that need it plus to be close to Alex. Then he is asked if he could play Santa Clause because Noel the real one got hurt doesn’t feel he can do it. So just before a performance Ben finds Alex in a storage room having a panic attack because he thinks he is going to fail all over again Ben talks him through it. Then Alex is called about having a part of a traveling play but he just can’t sing the song they want him to sing, so he failed the audition. Alex agrees that he is where he belongs.

The names alone evoke Christmas: Alex Garland, Ben Bitzen, Holly. Alex may have returned to Yuletide Valley after a failure on Broadway with plans to go back after settling his grandmother’s estate, but with the help of Ben, the local citizens and the theatre in town, he eventually realizes he’s in the right place. He slowly gets over his lack of confidence and stops performing to become himself. On the other hand, Ben harbours many secrets that he divulges to Alex in small installments as their love develops. The two main characters are delightful ad complement each other in so many ways. The secondary characters totally support plot development despite showing up at inconvenient times for Alex and Ben, or perhaps convenient ones. One delightful part of this book is that quite apart from the town citizenry, the Theatre is an actual character, expressing opinions in various physical ways. The story has very little angst and develops in a straight line. The book has little steam and it’s handled very tastefully.
This book was a very easy read, and it was very difficult to put down.
This one was tough to rate. I ended up going with 3.5 (rounded up to 4). There were things about this book that I really enjoyed - the magic, all the kids enjoying Christmas, Ben and Alex getting to know each other. From that perspective it was a cute story. There was a bit of repetition here and there and some minor timeline inconsistencies, but none of it was enough to pull me out of the story. The thing I did not enjoy was the way everyone around Alex (including Ben at times) and even the town itself all railroaded Alex into doing what they wanted with no regard for his feelings at the time. I'm pretty sure this is a me thing - any time I read a story where a lot of manipulation of one of the main characters goes on it's almost always a turn off for me. If this isn't a thing that bothers you then you'll likely quite enjoy the story as it's got all the Christmas feels and is quite sweet. It is listed as a book 2, but I didn't read book 1 and had no issues so it definitely holds up as a standalone.

What a magical story! I loved it. This season brings me down sometimes... all the hustle and bustle and missing loved ones who have passed. Reading stories like this, brings the magic back just a little bit.
We start this story off with a bang! A slip and fall brings the 2 MCs together. Alex Garland is a little bit lost, and Ben Blitzen is steady and sure. These 2 characters complimented each other well. I loved the development of their relationship...the buildup to love was slow, but they also fell for each other fast... it was a juxtaposition. Ben gave Alex time to figure everything out for himself, to figure out where he belonged... in Yuletide Valley. to feel the magic and believe. The unfolding of the magic was great, I wanted Alex to be the real Santa so bad, related in some way maybe?!? In my mind, he still is!
This story was magical and wonderful; it brought some magic back to the season... Holly, Marcus and the kids were all great side characters, I fell for them all. This story was a great addition to my holiday season! Well done, Declan!

A lovely little Christmas magic romance. In the magic of Yuletide Valley, Ben and Alex get wrapped up in the magic of the 12 nights before Christmas. They both grew up in the valley, but Alex left to chase his Broadway dreams. After a disastrous audition, Alex returns to the community to regroup and deal with his grief following his grandmother's death. Ben has been in the community the entire time and has always had a bit of a crush on Alex. When the local musical production of Miracle on 34th Street finds itself missing a director, Alex gets pulled in to help. And he finds his person and a new definition of success. There are so many little holiday magic touches to this story. All the names of the characters are nods to the season, which is delightful. It's heavily implied that one of the characters has an actual connection to the real Santa Claus which is fun to read as an adult. A nice little romance to read to help up your holiday joy.
This story embraces the magic of the season from the very first page--and puts the magic right out in front. All the things we love best about Christmas are given an origin story and an explanation for why our traditions persist, then enhanced by the addition of even more miraculous details. The story truly captures the spirit of the season.
There are so many passages that just yanked on my heart and kept my emotions running high in the very best way! I appreciate that what really makes Yuletide Valley special is the community’s genuine belief in the value of letting people go and then welcoming them back when they are able to see their place in the magic of the valley—and gently encouraging them to accept how much good they can do.
Sappy and heartwarming, filled with small acts of courage, kindness and love ... and magical reindeer, of course.
Christmas in the Footlights is such a sweet, cozy holiday read. The theatre group has a wonderful cast of characters, and even the building itself feels magical—almost healing for the people who need it most. Alex and Ben working together on sets and lighting was such a lovely touch, letting their memories, talents, and vulnerabilities bring out the best in each other as they fall in love. I really enjoyed the whimsical bits too—like the reindeer signaling to Ben and the Blitzen family lore, and the journal he finds explaining the carving magic passed down through generations. Sharing that with Alex when he decides to stay in Yuletide Valley for good made the story feel extra warm and hopeful. Cute, magical, funny, and full of heart—an absolutely charming Christmas romance I definitely recommend.
Fast forward from last year, Christmas magic continues in Yuletide Valley. However, the magic is actually indigenous to the Valley. More than sparks fly when Alex returns and falls on the ice outside of Holly’s apothecary. And Ben is there to help him stand while Holly brews a special tea. The Valley knows its own and Rhodes graciously tells the story of special teas, wood and special designs in woodworking, the theatre that speaks in not-so-subtle ways, a career change, becoming one’s authentic self, prophecy, reindeer, finding once hidden messages, the pediatric floor, and the annual Christmas play. Everyone in Yuletide Valley seems to understand the meaning of Alex’s return but does he? Enjoy a great holiday miracle!
Alex has returned home to his hometown full of magic. Yuletide Valley is not a typical town with the magic that flows through it. Alex got the news of his grandmother's passing just before an audition in New York which turned into a disaster. He's run home for comfort and to settle her estate, but finds something far more important, Ben. Alex is soon directing the community theatre and starring as Santa. This is a wonderful story of finding belonging, finding home, and finding love. Alex becomes more than an actor in a play, he becomes a healing presence to his fellow actors and the children in the hospital the play is raising funds for.

Rhodes continues to write books that warm my heart and leave me believing love is possible. This is book two in this series, set about a year later. Alex, a disgraced dancer who suffered a panic attack and has returned to city he left, Yuletide Valley, to lick his wombs. He is defeated and lacking confidence. But suddenly the local community theater needs him and he meet carpenter Ben. A slow love story develops as Alex reclaims his voice and confidence (along with great support from Ben). I love a magical holiday love story and this one is pure perfection. I hated to see it end as feel hard for Alex, Ben and the entire community.
ARC review Here you have all reasons for finding your christmas spirit before the holiday is setting in. This was such a beautiful celebration of love and christmas, a heartfelt and raw read to warm your heart. Alex is terrified of making the wrong choices in other people's eyes, so he forget to make the choices his heart actually wants. When he meets Ben he learn a lot about himself, about the magic of christmas and how it's okay to follow your heart, even if it will disappoint others. Declan Rhodes is one of my favourite authors. I love his way to create and convey a story and it get to me every time. So here is for you, who love christmas and belive in the magic of it, and of how love conquers everything. Don' t miss out.
Okay. I tried to like this book, but I couldn’t do it. It’s just too “hokey.” I’m all for Christmas magic, but this is just so beyond that.
It started with the names — Alex Garland, Ben Blitzen, Jack Frost, Holly, etc. Then you have the theater “talking” to them thru lights flickering, etc. Honestly, I almost gave up about 20% into the book.
I will say it did improve, and I did find myself enjoying the Blitzen family backstory once it was explained later in the book. Unfortunately, this was just not one for me!
Still enjoy Declan’s books and will continue to read them!
Alex, an actor, returns to his hometown of Yuletide Valley where the theater world welcomes him with open arms. The director, the actors, the costume designer but especially the set creator and theater restorer, Ben. There is magic in the air along with romance as the Valley acknowledges Alex is meant to be there and Ben and he are meant to be. This book is magic and will make you cry but the good kind of cry. I received a copy of this and this is my voluntary opinion.
Sweetly delightful! Ben and Alex, get reacquainted during the twelve nights before Christmas which is a time of pure hope and magic. The town and townsfolk provide the opportunities and lay the groundwork for a sweet romance. Totally romantic story of two men who are in the right place, right time and ready to listen to what the town and their hearts tell them. Nicely done, great story, hot cover art! I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.
After a failed audition and finding out about his grandmother's death, Alex is returning to his home town. He meets Ben and is attracted to him but see no reason to pursue him because he's only here to settle his grandmother's estate. Ben knows that Alex belongs with him but can he get Alex to realize it. There's magic in the town and if one believes anything can happen. I really enjoyed this book.
Be prepared! Christmas in the Footlights is like a Hallmark movie in a book form! But believe me it unfolds into a truly beautiful love story between Alex Who returned to Yuletide Valley after he left Broadway and the mess he created after his grandmother's death, and Ben the carpenter who created beauty from wood. You will fall in love with the whole town and most of all the beautiful children!
Thank you for the book; here is my honest opinion: Rounded up for the amazing holiday vibes, this is one of the most Christmas-y Christmas reads of the year for me. It’s maybe a touch corny and the magic was fun but didn’t quite work for me but it’s loaded with charm and the setting is well done. I also really liked the couple, Ben and Alex are lovely together.
I love Declan Rhodes, and his stories are so human, so real, so imperfectly perfect! This was a great holiday story, really. When Alex returns to the valley of his childhood, he thinks he’s a failure, he’s unworthy, he’s going back because he cannot be accepted elsewhere, but Ben, Holly, the whole community, even the valley itself, are showing Ben that he is loved, he is wanted, he is accepted, imperfections and all, and hr can be happy and lead a fulfilling life right where it all began for him. It is a very moving story, and even though the mutual attraction is there from the beginning, their relationships unfolds at a beautiful pace. It isn’t a slow burn or insta-love, it’s a more realistic take on a magical love story, set during a miraculous time of year, and showing everything that with love and patience, we can all feel like we belong. I was very happy when I was offered the ARC, and I leave my voluntary review, and I look forward to more books by this incredible author.
Wow! So emotional and heartfelt! I LOVED this book! What an amazing message Wonderful characters and a great story! I will be rereading this one! It's so good! I read an advanced copy of this book and this is m unbiased review!
This is a Hallmark Christmas story that has magic showing Alex that he belongs in Yuletide Valley and not in New York. The romance between Alex and Ben was touching. A great book to get you in the Christmas spirit. Loved it!
So cute and adorable this book Lots of Christmas magic and the chemistry between Alex and Ben is amazing I have to buy more tissues because what I've cried in the last chapters was astonishing Highly recommended book for those who losve some Christmas magic
This is book two in the Yuletide Valley series and I really enjoyed this second chance holiday romance, the story was well written and the characters were all great and it kept my interest from the beginning to the end of the story. Great holiday romance.
Christmas in the Footlights is the second book in the Yuletide Valley series, each can be read as a standalone. This is a found family, second chances, magical story about Alex and Ben. I absolutely loved this adorable holiday read and all the warm feels it brings.
